Family-friendly holiday rentals in New River Valley

This is the second time that we have stayed with Donnie. The first time was in one of the cabooses. This time we stayed in The Depot. Both of these places were as described and pictured! I had good enough phone service that we did not miss having WiFi and there was cable for television. I had two children with me, an eight year old and a twelve year old, and they were both fine there! And we could look out the front door and see Buffalo Mountain. Because of Hurricane Helene damage, we did not get to go there but it was not for lack of trying! Sunday morning before we left, I got to see a deer in the pasture behind the depot! And some beautiful sunrises!

We wanted to do something unique & different for our anniversary & this did NOT disappoint. From the “main” road you can see the 3 red cabooses up on the hill & our hearts smiled. They recently had storms & we could see where the flood waters deteriorated the sides of the driveway but it was still wide enough for us to pass another small vehicle if needed. Office Check in was a breeze and took less than five mins before we were standing in our getaway train(caboose) which is on a real track! We were the only ones staying this weekend but if others were present, there was plenty of room. Our furbabies throughly enjoyed having a large field in front of the cabooses to run in. The views from the swings were breathtaking especially during the sunsets. Once Inside, we enjoyed the comforts of home (except for a stove). The hotness of the water & the relaxing hot tub added to our experience. Some things were dated but that is to come with the territory. We hope to visit again in the fall.

May be one of my favorite mountain stays I’ve had! Definitely will be back!

This Airbnb is in an absolutely stunning location. We stayed here for my daughter‘s graduation from Virginia Tech and it’s a 30 minute drive from campus. It is down some windy mountain roads, but the views are spectacular. The apartment is exactly as described; everything was clean and comfortable. I highly recommend this apartment.The host was super responsive and if we are ever back in the area, we would definitely stay here again.

We had a blast staying out in the mountains. The peace and quiet was exactly what we needed. The A-frame cabin was beautiful inside and out. We could not have chosen any where better to stay for a weekend.

We really enjoyed our visit! The house was perfect. We were so happy just relaxing on the deck and in the hot tub. We lost power only briefly but the generator kicked on so no real interruption. We found it hard to leave and head back home. Thank you for the wine as well as such a beautiful place to spend our vacation.

I had the most wonderful stay at Bliss Cabin, to say the least. From the initial photos of the writing desk and yoga deck, to the curious graveled path winding around the property lined with life and decorative details, I was totally immersed in the love and care that was so palpably present! Kathryn & Luke were absolutely lovely, so helpful, and incredibly accommodating! My recommendations while on the property: build and tend to a fire. Journal at the writing desk while playing Miles Davis. Take an early cold plunge in the river, do a round of Wim Hof breathing, then run up to take a hot shower at their beautiful abode. Chat with Luke, have tea with Kathryn. Do yoga on the deck. Say hello to the frogs. Express your inner musician with their drums and sound bowls. Let your soul free here!

Beautiful location, place as described. Jacuzzi was great. Lots of hot water. Good water pressure, good shower. Bed was comfortable. Donnie was helpful and responsive.

The place was beautiful and private with great views and not too far away. Linda & Michael were wonderful. They were very nice, helpful and ready to meet any need to make our stay relaxing and memorable. We look forward to going back in the future.

Lovely stay. Clean as a whistle. Very well appointed. There's a babbling brook next to it that you can enjoy from the back deck. Three forms of coffee available - most impressive. Everything was well labeled with instructions. It's a pet-friendly place, a nice surprise. It's just off a road, so be aware if you're sound sensitive. Communication was excellent from well before all the way through the visit. Beds were super comfy, with lots of lounging areas for friends or family. Clearly hosts that take their visitors comfort very seriously. A lot of thought and consideration put in to this truly lovely place.

This was a wonderful stay and great home!! Very helpful and accommodating host! Perfect for our family!! Would recommend to anyone in the area.

This was the perfect location for moving a VT student in or out of their housing on campus. The home has a large garage to keep a packed car, and the home itself is very clean and comfortable. There are a bunch of stairs however to get into the home and up to the second bedroom so that might be something to consider if you have difficulty with stairs or are bringing in heavy luggage. We would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful time at the cabin, it was nice to have a peaceful place to relax and I loved sitting on the screen porch and just watching the trees sway. We did have a critter in the old chimney but it was immediately taken care of after I let Barbara know. It is definitely in the woods so bugs and animals will be seen more often, as long as you are fine with that then this is a super fun place. Absolutely amazing host that took care of anything we needed as well. Do yourself a favor and walk to the waterfall a few streets over. It was gorgeous and so fun to splash through the water even if it is ice cold!

This is a perfect beautiful little cottage. The gardens and play place were amazing little spots to spend time with our family. We were in town for a family reunion so the location for us was absolutely perfect. Amelia’s place is clean and cozy and it was a great choice for our needs. We’re going to book for our trips back to Elk Creek going forward! Thank you :)

We’ve stayed at Mark of Design many times! We enjoy the beautiful & peaceful setting of the horse farm. In addition to watching the horses in the fields, we saw deer, wild turkeys & rabbits. It is also very convenient for restaurants in downtown Hillsville, as well as nearby Galax & Mt Airy.

Stayed here for a weekend getaway with a best friend who lives out of state along with our 7 children. It was a wonderful place to just hang back and relax. Lots of space for kids to hang out, they especially loved the massive second story deck with room for games. The views are phenomenal and the fire pit out front was a definite hit, we came prepared with s’mores supplies. Beds were comfortable, place was very clean, kitchen was well stocked with all supplies. The closeness was Stone Mount State Park was especially convenient. Steve was also a wonderful host, always quick to respond and was even totally understanding of a hiccup in our check-out. Would definitely stay here again!

We enjoyed our stay at Dan River House. It was a great location for us to relax and enjoy some time away.

This was the most relaxing, peaceful and carefree weekend we have ever had. My husband and our 2 kids and 2 dogs had the most fun, and we didn’t even feel the need to be on our phones or watch tv! The cabin felt like home; so much so, that we didn’t want to leave. My husband and I are already planning a trip back. Carey was an amazing hostess and we are so appreciative that she opened her home to us. The views were breathtaking. We literally sat outside all weekend. We only went inside to cook and sleep. Oh! And we got to enjoy a meteor shower Saturday night! Super awesome!! And, even cooler, there’s a dollar general market at the end of the main road! Coolest thing I’ve ever seen! So you don’t need to bring a bunch of food! We drove 5 hours to come stay here, and honestly, I would drive 10 just to come back. This cabin was every bit of home and we can’t wait to come back!

Great spot - very convenient if you're wanting to walk everywhere in downtown Mt Airy. Very comfy and perfect for a couple (there is a Murphy bed if you need space for more but wr didn't use it). Everything was clean and well-stocked. The bed and couch were both very comfy and the shower was great. As other reviewers have mentioned, the upstairs neighbors' footsteps are very noticeable. This is completely out of the owner's control, so the review isn't being impacted. But it should be taken into consideration if you're hoping to sleep in. We had a great time and highly recommend staying here!

Suzun's place is great! Loved the linen sheets (may have to investigate those further). Everything was as expected and the location was so convenient. Nice to have free parking so close. Thank you for sharing your place with us!

Glenna was so sweet the whole time! The place was beautiful! We stayed there for our wedding that was in Rocky Mount, and Glenna even put Mr. and Mrs. pillows on the bed for an extra personal touch.

Charming and secluded cabin with beautiful views! Was comfortable and cozy. Lindsay was so helpful and responsive. We really enjoyed our weekend stay!

Perfect place to stay for our hiking trip. The location was not far from some great food and breweries as well. And near many parks. The snacks in the room were very helpful after a long day hiking. Internet worked great and was able to watch tv. AC cooled perfectly.

Julie's place was absolutely lovely! She helped us know what to anticipate, was very responsive, and the house was warm and welcoming with snacks in the kitchen - a welcome treat after our long drive. The house smelled very clean and everything was stocked and well-made. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend her and the home to others searching for a lovely getaway.
