  • Nice room, received an upgrade as I was the only one staying. Private bathroom, shower was excellent, with handheld showerhead! Location is good, right in the town, though no reception on phone, completely relying on the Wi-Fi.

  • Another amazing stay at this hidden gem. Amazing people, cozy and clean!!!!! It’s super quiet. Nice linens. I love how the bedroom windows are tinted. When I stay here for work I always get off at 6am. It’s nice that the windows are dark so you can sleep in. The house is very clean and the sweetest cat always greets me at the front door. Amazing value as well!!!!

Visit our tiny straw-bale house perched on top of Cheat Mountain! Powered by solar panels, this little gem is completely off the grid; an ideal quiet retreat for solo or small group travel. It borders the Monongahela National Forest- you can walk right out the back gate into the wilderness! It’s 2 private acres of hillside with a small fenced-in forested yard, complete with shiitake logs and an outdoor kitchen for breezy cooking! The rental is rustic, an offers an indoor ‘glamping’ experience.
You have access to all the space in the house, the outdoor kitchen, and all other outdoor spaces on our property! The property directly borders National Forest land, which is free and open to the public. There is an outhouse available for guests and rainwater supplied to the outdoor cooking area. All outbuildings are off limits, please be respectful of our storage space.
DO NOT GPS the address listed, please refer to our directions. This is a remote cottage, bordering the Monongahela National Forest; it takes approximately 40 minutes to drive to Elkins and 25 minutes to drive to Beverly. There is a Dollar General and a gas station in Beverly, and it’s another 10 minutes to the outskirts of Elkins where more shopping options are available. Beverly is a quant historic town offering museums, small shops, and events hosted by the historic society such as Civil War reenactments, wine tastings, haunted tours, and more! The house offers close access to the Shavers Fork River, hiking in the Monongahela National Forest, and other outdoor recreation. The Shavers Fork is a popular boating and trout fishing area. This river has both catch-and-release and keep what you catch areas. You can also access trails for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running right from the back yard! Hunting and trapping are legal within season in the National Forest, so please take precautions when hiking during hunting seasons. Cloudy Mountain Refuge is located in the heart of West Virginia, so come and find your wild and wonderful!
  • Coming from Morgantown I was a little nervous about the drive (without gps) but the directions were so easy to follow, we got to the house without any issue. The space it’s self was amazing. We got there just in time to see the sun set, and it was the highlight of my week. We were able to get a fire going quickly and the house warmed right up, however I think we were burning through the wood faster than anticipated and found ourselves searching for another log in the middle of the night! We made great use of the board games, and were super cozy at bed time. The outhouse was very clean and easy to use. With it being so dark at night I was afraid we would run out of solar power but even after a few hours of lights on to play the board games, we had plenty of power and nothing to worry about. Our dog loved the freedom of the yard and it was hard to get him inside! I am excited to plan a trip back when it’s warmer and put that outdoor kitchen to use! This is the perfect place to get away from your day to day life and feel off the grid (although there is WiFi which we found to be convenient)

    Nikki2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • A great stay up in the mountains! peaceful and solar powered!

    Adam2019-10-27T00:00:00Z

  • This property is awesome. The mountains are amazingly beautiful this time of the year and the cabin was adorable. It was so warm and inviting and the view was indescribable. Maureen was very helpful in finding our way up the mountain. It was just the right combination of rustic and comfort.

    Stephen2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The cloudy mountain refuge was a perfect weekend getaway! The views from the porch and loft were to die for, there was coffee provided, and the attention to detail was marvelous. Maureen was quick to respond and we would absolutely recommend her and the tiny house to anyone looking for a quiet off-grid escape!

    Kara2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Maureen went above and beyond to make our experience amazing. I urge future guests to study her suggestions intensely before heading to the cabin. Amazing views! I hope to return in the future.

  • The place is SO COOL. About as private as you can get. Very romantic and back to basics and you can’t beat the quite. The hosts have clearly invested a lot of time and thought into the place and we are so happy we were able to experience this place. We will definitely be coming back to stay longer and escape! The decorations were also very cute.

Welcome to our home located along "Country Roads" near Sago, WV on the scenic Buckhannon River. We are just 5 miles from Buckhannon, WV and WV Wesleyan University. Nearby recreational areas include Stonecoal Lake and Stonewall Jackson Lake. The studio apartment is attached to our home and allows private, direct access to the river for water activities. The apartment includes a queen size bed, private bath and shower and an eating area with a scenic view of the river.
The apartment is new construction having been completed in 2018. You will have your own private entrance with a lockbox. The kitchenette has a mini fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and a toaster oven. No stove. You will have access to a private beach on the river from which to swim and fish. At the right time of year, you can also kayak from this location. You cannot launch a boat from this area; however, there is a public boat launch a little farther down the river. Please be aware that any water activities you undertake are done at your own risk. The river has varying depths and current. It has large rocks and, if you do decide to go wading in the river, water shoes are highly recommended.
Naturally the Buckhannon River is the main attraction. It is stocked with trout further up river and muskie below. In front of the property, I have caught the occasional muskie but usually small mouth bass and rock bass are on the end of the line. An evening dip in the water is always refreshing after a hot day. Other attractions nearby include Main St. Buckhannon with its shops and restaurants, Stonecoal and Stonewall Jackson Lakes where you can kayak, fish and run larger motorboats, Stonewall Jackson resort with its amenities and Audra state park.
  • The studio apartment was so beautiful and the view was even better form the dining table. It was so homey and nice to stay in. The amenities were very useful to have or make food too. The space was very worth it!

    Emma2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • What I lovely space! Clean. Lovely light and view. Amazing thoughtful touches and provision of the little things we might need during our stay.

    Jared2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a little slice of wilderness nestled between the forest and river. We had such a great time on our snowy weekend in Buckhannon! I would definitely stay again.

  • William's place is one of the best Airbnbs I've stayed at. The view was amazing, a great location on the river. The place was clean and comfortable with nice extra touches. I highly recommend.

    Thomas2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This was a wonderful space: beautiful, comfortable, and with a lovely view of the river, blue-green & rushing around boulders right behind the house. The apartment was set up nicely with extra blankets, a little snack basket, coffee and tea, juice in the fridge - extra touches - and William was very responsive and helpful.

    Kate And Dan2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Words cannot express my wonderful experience at this airbnb and the extent of William's generosity and hospitality. The surrounding area is beautiful (feets away from the river) and the airbnb itself is very spacious, clean, and private. William went above and beyond to help me during my stay. I had a flat tire and William graciously gave me a ride to and from Philippi while giving me a great tour of the area. He and his wife are honestly some of the nicest/warm-hearted people I have ever met and I feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with them during my short stay in WV. 100/5 stars.

    Angie2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful stay along the river! The space was spotless and had a lot of thoughtful touches to make the experience very comfortable. It was nice to be secluded in nature and hear the roaring river, yet stay the night in a luxurious and cozy space. Check in/out was easy and William was quick to answer any questions we had. We enjoyed hiking at Audra State Park and exploring Buckhannon for lunch and dinner. Would love to return again in the fall. Highly recommend!

    Kaela2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • This weekend was meant to be a relaxed getaway from the craziness of my boyfriend’s & my lives & William’s place couldn’t have been a more perfect place to stay at. Not too far from the town’s local restaurants & stores, but just far enough to where we felt like we could enjoy mostly each other’s company. Got the chance to meet William in person & he was so helpful & personable. Already thinking about making another trip out to WV soon & will definitely be booking with William for it!

Stay in the masterfully crafted Lemuel Chenoweth homestead along the rippling Tygart river. Built in 1857, this 2nd floor 4-room suite offers antiques furnishings, a private entrance, master bedroom, bathroom, mini-kitchen, and mud room. It has a queen bed, dresser, large porch with views of the river, a claw-foot tub with shower, sink, toilette, and an extra room with a fridge, convection oven and table for small bites. Walk to main street Beverly for museums, shops, and Frankie's Pizza.
For more information about the spectacular history of this beautiful home visit the historiclemuelchenowethhouse dot org.
The homestead is part of a historic block and historic Beverly. In fact, Stonewall Jackson's sister lived in the red brick house that is catty corner. You can walk to museums, antique and gift shops, and pizza. The Chenoweth House is next to the Tygart River and railroad tracks. The train is not active. It is nice to sit on the porch and watch the sun set over Rich Mountain as the rives flows by. Nearby: Beverly Historic District, Cutlip Coins and Collectibles, Frankie's Pizza, Beverly Heritage Center, Antique Mall, Gretel's Moon gifts, blacksmith shoppe, new antique gift store, and more.
  • Expect not to worry about anything, everything was very well thought out

    Candy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Jamie's place was absolutely spotless and very comfortable - we will absolutely be staying if we're in the area again! It was fantastic in the winter and I can only imagine how lovely it'd be in the summer to sit out on the porch and look out over the garden and creek.

  • A truly charming and comfortable home, and a wonderful host. Would definitely stay again!

    Patrick2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • This place was even better than we expected based on the pictures! Jamie left very clear instructions for everything and provided all the amenities we could have asked for (including some snacks!) This place was so cute, great experience all around

    Phoebe2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful old house immaculately kept! It carries a wonderful historic feeling. And we had a very restful stay.

    Ross2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • To visit this wonderful place be prepared to take a step back in time. With antique furnishings, real wooden floors that actually creek when you walk on them, the attention to detail and the views words cannot describe it. We went in February when we arrived we had rain, freezing rain, then it snowed it could not have been better. You will never find friendlier people anywhere than those in West Virginia.

    Sherri2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed this historic house. Views out to the river and mountains are nice. Although Beverly does not have much for food, Elkins is only about a 10 min drive and has a number of options, and Jamie provided good recommendations. Her quick responses were much appreciated as well. Definitely recommend this lovely, historic, clean suite.

Located directly on the Buckhannon river, you will love this river/mountain retreat. Our camp offers swimming, fishing, hiking and more. 15 Minutes from Buckhannon, Philippi and Audra State Park. Elkins and Clarksburg about 35-40 minutes. NO PETS-NO SMOKING
Peace and quiet is what makes our property special. The property has been in my family since the 1950's. The camp is only 6 years old and a great place for families to go to relax and spend time together. (there is HOT water now in the outdoor shower.)
There are a few other camps in the area, but most of your neighbors will be the wildlife =)
  • Dennis's place is awesome!! We stayed for a long weekend during our son's college parents weekend and absolutely loved it. We cooked outdoors on the fire pit as well as indoors. There was more than ample cookware. We had fun playing several of the games that were there. Directv was a bonus!! The place was clean and the beds were comfortable. The upstairs sleeping area was perfect for our son he enjoyed that very much. The outdoor shower was fun too :) I particularly enjoyed sitting on the porch with my morning coffee watching the chipmunks run around. I would definitely stay there again and I highly recommend it.

  • Perfect spot for relaxing! Nice evenings around the campfire with the sound of the water in the background.

    Vickie2019-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • This place is picture perfect. We enjoyed watching the humming birds, swimming in the river from dawn til dusk, rock collecting, fishing and just relaxing. This is the first vacation that I can back from actually refreshed and rejuvenated! You won’t want to leave this little piece of paradise. Cell service was very sketchy which made it even nicer and allowed us to reconnect as a family. Lots of memories were made.

It’s by downtown Elkins, Elkins Park, and Davis and Elkins College.
  • Didn't see much of becca but her roommates were VERY helpful. Literally 2 minutes from the Davis and Elkins college where I was working

    Carolyn2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • The room was much larger than what I expected as well as the bathroom. We were easily able to check in using a code. Check in time was flexible, which we appreciated. Besides enough towels, there was shampoo and conditioner, a tooth brush in case you forgot one, toothpaste, water, and some snacks, which was a thoughtful touch. There was a large closet to hang your clothes and bureau draws. There was a window air conditioner which was turned on before we arrived. Becca was away, but we met her roommate by chance, who was friendly and welcoming. Otherwise, we did not see anyone 98% of the time. There other rooms that get rented, and we briefly saw other guests who were friendly and polite. The location was convenient, fully suited our needs and then some. We hope to return next year the same time if the room is available! Thank you!

    Jennifer2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Nice older home in safe and pretty neighborhood close to D&E. The Spacious room and bath were very clean. Becca is very friendly and responsive. Highly recommended place to stay for moderate cost. Thanks Becca!

  • We've stayed here several times over the past few years. We stay to ski in snowshoe. It's a 1 hour drive to the mountain. On this particular trip we arrived after the brewery closed, kept in touch with the staff and the stayed late to give us the key, amazing staff, perfect accommodations, amazing value. The rooms are clean. Beds are great! Full kitchen with almost everything you need to cook (including spices, pots, pans, knives etc) Great beer downstairs to top it all off!

    Chuck2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy space, great brews, great hospitality. My first time staying in a hostel, did not disappoint. Will stay again.

  • Fun little place; great beer, great company

    Emily2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • This hostel was extra cozy. There are two rooms upstairs (above the brew store/taproom). 3 bunk beds in each room (6 beds total). There are two large bathrooms . When we came in mid-October there wasn't anyone else staying at the hostel, just us. The host kept the tap room open downstairs for us so that we can get settled and have a drink. The whole process was easy. It was a chill place to hang out. Will have to come back some other time.

    Marina2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I stayed the night in the Cabin Room, which was very comfortable and clean. There were bunks for six, but we were lucky and had the room to ourselves. We ended up making our reservation last-minute after a weekend of camping, but the host responded quickly and had the beds ready for us when we arrived. The host was friendly and we very much enjoyed his brews.

  • This hostel in downtown Elkins is great. The beer downstairs is tasty. The folks were super friendly. The view from the rooftop deck is spectacular. There are a few nice restaurants within walking distance. Elkins is a great base for heading into the mountains.

  • The s'more's basket was awesome! We super enjoyed them over our bonfire. We also loved the gas fireplace it was such a cozy touch for the cold weather we had there. The dollar game was also so fun! We made it to clue #4 but nothing past. So good luck and be sure to read through the guest book!

  • Such a quiet, magical place to relax and renew. Cannot recommend it enough!

    Somer2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We got there at night but in the morning we could see how beautiful it is. Very quiet place and so cozy. We have no words to describe how enjoyable it was. The kitchen has all the utensils and even more. We were welcomed with a delicious basket to enjoy the fire place. About the dollar game: We couldn’t find it but we had fun trying! We definitely will come back.

    Andreza2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was fantastic. Fortunately the rain held out and we were able to build a fire and use the s'mores kit that was left for us which the kids loved. We loved the location and took advantage of it to go to some of the surrounding State parks. We would like to come back in the summer months and do some more exploring and just relax at the house.

    Cory2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful spot on a slow moving stream. Two ten year olds put their electronics away and played outside for hours. Wood and gas fireplaces were used for hours of relaxation. The City of Buckhannon was close when needed and found a gem of an Italian Restaurant called Mama Roma.

    Joel2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • The Red Bull is a beautiful and peaceful cabin. We stayed over a weekend as we attended a WVU game. Our super hosts were quick to respond to us. My teenagers loved the outdoor firepit and the s’mores our super host provided. So thoughtful. The cabin had all the amenities we needed and more. It’s def a place we must revisit.

    Deana2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Very private and secluded but also only 15 minutes to grocery stores and shopping. Had a great time enjoying the fireplace while watching the leaves fall with the river in the background. Highly recommended!

Our cabin is remotely located near Rich Mountain Battlefield in Randolph County, West Virginia. If you want privacy and seclusion, this is the place. This retreat is ideal for anyone wanting a quiet break from the daily grind in life. Rural living brings peace and tranquility along with things you might not be used to - singing birds early in the morning, fire flies and other buggy creatures that are normal in the outdoors and the total lack of street lights. You're in the country - enjoy it!
The upper (main) level of our cabin hosts an open floor plan (this means no defined bedrooms). Queen size bed and sleeper sofa are on this level, along with the bathroom, living area and basic kitchen. All linens (bed sheets and towels) are provided. We have an extra set if you choose to change your own during stays of 1 week or more. A small kitchen is adequately stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, pots and pans, etc. We have a full sized propane stove & refrigerator, small microwave, coffee pot and toaster. Rich Mountain Retreat is a small cabin on approximately six acres. There are no other cabins or homes on the property or within view so its secluded and private, yet located within easy access to historic towns like Elkins and Beverly, West Virginia. Enjoy watching deer and wild turkey as you relax on the 10 foot porch that surrounds the cabin. Nearby hiking and walking trails provide a look into Battlefield history during Civil War times. You can spend the day walking thru former camp sites, such as Camp Garrett. Re-enactments of the Battle of Rich Mountain occur each summer in July as part of the Beverly Days Celebrations. We offer a small grill (bring your favorite charcoal) along with an outdoor fire pit (wood is provided). We also ask that you refrain from using the fire pit on windy days.
Rich Mountain Retreat is located on six privately owned acres near the Rich Mountain Battlefield, with 98 attached acres on lease for exploring. The cabin sits on a maintained 1 acre lot with the surrounding area used for hay production farmland. There are no other cabins or homes onsite or within view of the property and only 2 homes on the mountain itself since other property is either privately owned or falls within the boundaries of the Rich Mountain Battlefield Association. A patch of pine trees lies between our gravel driveway and the access road (also gravel) which helps to buffer light traffic noise from the locals who tend to use this road as a pass through from Beverly going towards Buckhannon. Our experience is weekday 'work' hours are the most noticed for vehicle traffic, along with weekend passersby to include ATV's. Sorry, we do NOT allow ATV or UTV use on our property. Our cabin is not so remote that you cannot access some local attractions. Elkins & Beverly are towns located within 5-10 miles and can offer a variety of services, food and other entertainment.
  • We couldn't have asked for a better stay. 900 miles from our house and we felt right at home. The property is beautiful, secluded and has amazing views. Our 3 boys loved the basement it was like their own little man cave. They had a great time roaming the property and watching the wildlife, we saw raccoons, birds and deer. The cabin was well stocked with everything we needed plus more. While we stayed at Rich mountain retreat we went to Smoke Hole Caverns, Blackwater Falls State Park, Monongahela national forest, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks, Snowshoe Mountain, and Fairfax Stone Historical Monument State Park all within a 2 hour drive. There was so much to do we wish we could of stayed longer. Cheryl was a great host she met us at the property when we arrived and made sure that we had everything we needed. We plan to come back and stay again!

  • The perfect place to unplug and get away. So very quiet and peaceful! (Still had cell service) Plenty of places to go out to eat and enjoy nature but with enough amenities that you don't feel you need to leave. Highly highly recommended.

    Kevin2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Rich Mountain. The grounds are beautiful, and the location is a perfect balance between being close to everything and isolated enough for peace and quiet. The cabin itself was better appointed and cozier than I expected, with plenty of hot water, a full kitchen, and well-stocked with all the little things you’ll forget. We visited on the first “winter cold” weekend of the year, but the heating was more than up to the task. Although the space is small enough to possibly make a larger party feel cramped, as a couple looking for a weekend retreat, we found it perfectly snug! Important notes: We found just enough cell reception to not feel cut off, but not enough to stay stuck in our phones instead of enjoying ourselves. If you decide to venture much farther from town, however, I’d strongly recommend downloading your maps or falling back on paper. The road up the mountain is unpaved but in decent repair. I would think that only the most low-slung cars would have trouble with it. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the stovetop/griddle combo works well, but be aware that the oven is quite slow to heat and has a hard time holding temp. We look forward to visiting again in warmer weather, and making use of the fire pit and outstanding deck!

  • Expect to be greeted by a friendly couple, who really care about your experience there! The property was built by them, and I could tell they take great pride in it! The living space was lovely, the bed was just soft enough, and the kitchen was very functional, tucked away in the corner. The bathroom was really nice, too! Everything we expected it to be. Also expect great landscape views, beautiful foliage, cool breezes, and a variety of wildlife. We live in the city, so this place reminded me of visits to my grandmother's place in the country, free of traffic and noise, and replaced with quiet, serene nature. The views at sunset from their porch are highly recommended, as well as walking the property at dusk. We didn't get an opportunity to light a campfire while we were there, because the governor of West Virginia had issued a burn ban, due to a drought. No fault of the owners there, but honestly, that was okay! They had alternative sources for their heat, so even during the chilly fall weather, we had ways to keep ourselves warm and cozy, including gas heat and blankets. There was an A/C unit in the window, too, but we only used that while we were sleeping. The cross-breeze between the porch doors and their ceiling fan were both really helpful in keeping the place cool If you have Verizon Wireless, be aware that the local town of Elkin and the surrounding area doesn't have a cell tower for them, so you'll be without signal for most of the trip. This is exactly what we wanted, though, so we were glad to do without it. You still get one to two bars of signal at the property itself, and I was able to call and text the owners without issue, with questions. Cheryl was very responsive and quick to reply and offer guidance when we needed it. They do get a fair amount of channels on their rabbit ears TV as well. We were happy to watch some Forensic Files, and read books, and just relax while we were there. Highly recommend this place! Definitely get some tickets in advance for a train ride in Elkins, if you like that! The town is quite lovely in the fall. Can't wait to visit here again! Thanks for taking care of us, Cheryl and Mike!

  • The perfect spot if you want some privacy. This was the best cabin I've ever stayed at and the atmosphere was serene. The kitchen amenities are impressive for the small space. I would love to stay here again the next time we are in the area. Make sure to catch a few sunsets and watch the deer in the evenings.

  • My husband Anthony and I spent about a week and a half at Cheryl’s place on our honeymoon. It was the perfect place to relax after the stress of wedding planning😊 and so nice to have a base each day after our adventuring in the local area was done for the day. Cheryl has a beautiful place with amazing amenities and lovely views of the surrounding mountainsides. Thank you so very much Cheryl!

The headboard for the bed is absolutely breathtaking, the bed is super soft, the TV’s are new, local food spots were extremely close by and delicious (especially Vintage), kitchen is fully stocked with cooking utensils and plenty of silverware, and most importantly the house was sparkling clean and smelled great. Hannah was also very responsive and was quick to answer our questions. Would definitely stay again!

1 Bedroom apartment in a beautiful historic home near WV Wesleyan Campus and Main Street. Great for families who don't mind close quarters and want to be self sufficient on their visit to Buckhannon. Full kitchen, private entry and lots of extra bedding and friendly down-to-earth hosts!!
The apartment is one bedroom, one bathroom and a shared livingroom/kitchen area with other sleeping options. It offers a fully functional kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator, oven/stove, sink area and cookware. While the appliances and the overall appearance of the apartment show general wear and tear, everything is comfortable, clean and functional. There's a queen size bed in the main bedroom and a double bed and futon in the shared living space. It's perfect for a family, and if you need an extra cot- there's one in the closet and extra bedding in the wardrobe and walnut chest. We are very accommodating hosts, and are happy to provide whatever we can!
We live on a quiet dead-end street with a mix of old and new houses, but many of our neighbors have lived here as long as we have! There are children next door who ride their bikes and play in the street sometimes, so please drive slow.
  • You cannot go wrong at The Holly House!!! My experience was outstanding!!! The husband and wife host are superb ! The Holly House is supplied with everything that you need !!! It is very convenient to all of Buckhannon, and it is quiet and comfortable. Carolyn also has a great folder about things to do in the area. • This was a really nice, convenient place to stay very close to Davis and Elkins and the Elkins downtown. The owner was very prompt in replying to my inquiries which helped when I suddenly needed a place to stay. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and welcoming the place was, and already nice and warm on a cold night. Although it was just me staying this time next time I will bring my husband and even my teenage daughter could come and sleep on the spacious couch. There was a gas oven which would make cooking easy. All in all a very well put together, sparkling clean apartment. The bed was super comfortable, too! The price is also very good. We usually stay on the Davis and Elkins campus but this apartment is a great option because it is pet friendly, and Graceland on Davis and Elkins does not allow pets.

Nature is not off limits, not even now. We are a 40-acre working homestead with animals, gardens and wildlife. To stay on this property is a treat for those who appreciate nature, Americana, and quietude. West Virginia has a “stay at home” mandate in place to help keep everyone safe from coronavirus. It is stricter than just social distancing, but outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and fishing are OK. We accept guests who answered the prebooking questions and practice social distancing.
Prospective guests should look at our photos and read our description carefully. This is a long and detailed profile because we have a unique place, but it’s not for everyone. We want you to enjoy your stay, which means you are responsible for deciding if it’s a good fit for you. Please ask any questions before booking, we are happy to answer. Overview of things that some people have commented on: 1) It’s a steep gravel driveway and some people are not comfortable driving up it. Parking is 200’ from the house or at the bottom of the driveway. It is safe, despite the connotations of the junk cars next door 2) No air conditioning 3) No heat in the lavatory 4) Working homestead means farm animals and sounds, projects and activities, occasional volunteers and tours 5) Hot water is heated on the stove 6) Bathtub is next to the kitchen. You get privacy to bathe 7) Nighttime woodland drive can be spooky if you’re not used to it 8) The moon and stars through the big picture window can shine real bright on you as you sleep, making it seem like a light is on If this sounds good so far, please continue reading for more details... Guests have the opportunity to explore and experience a partially off-the-grid homestead and property under renovation. Located at the top of a hollow on a 2,600 foot elevation hillside, the house is situated within a dramatic rolling landscape with dense biodynamic forests. This homestead was built during the American movement called back-to-the-land, in which people left the cities in favor of a simpler lifestyle in a rural environment where they could grow their own food and raise their children. We are Margaret and David, this has been our home for nearly three years, after leaving Los Angeles and a year of traveling the nation. We consider ourselves stewards of this historically significant home and way of life. Guests are guaranteed a unique homestead experience that looks and functions different from typical homes. Depending on the time of year, we are baking bread, digging ramps (wild garlic), pressing apple cider, picking berries, cooking maple syrup, gardening, raising and occasionally butchering animals, canning food, tending bee hives, hunting for mushrooms, hosting nature programs, campfire cookouts and stargazing. Our small batch foods feed ourselves, friends and customers. We have heard that to sleep under the stars in our guest room creates a sensation of being in a planetarium. Indeed, there are no curtains up there, but there's no one around to peek in. You have woods on one side and open space on the other. On a nice clear night, the moon will bathe you in its glow.. We have a tin roof, which you can hear when it rains. You may hear nuts falling from trees or owls hooting and maybe our ducks and sheep up the hill. It all merges into a sublime soundtrack. Your room is the top floor of the house, an easy climb up a wooden ladder. It is all green and blue through the windows. The vaulted ceiling is lined with wood. Through a door is a small private deck, from which you can look out over our land and the mature tree canopy of the hollow (pronounced “holler” in Appalachia “Appa-LATCH-uh”). The guest room is up a ladder outside our room. Sound carries between the two. The guest room is approximately 8 feet by 10 feet. It is simply appointed with two chairs, extra blankets, a lamp and a small cabinet to put your things in. The soft area rug feels good under foot. The floor is a nice finished hardwood. Your bedding is exceptional because we want you to have a great night’s sleep. Your queen size mattress is by Tuft & Needle. Sheets, pillow cases, duet cover, and all season down alternative comforter are by the award winning, eco-friendly and socially compliant California Design Den. There are 2 kinds of pillows to choose from. We strongly recommend that guests bring shoes or firm soled slippers to wear in the house. All the floors except the guest room may feel cold and/or dirty, and bare feet can be sensitive to the rungs of the homemade ladder. We have a modern propane fueled cookstove and a refrigerator. Running water at the kitchen sink is cold only. Hot water is heated on the stove. During cold months we also cook on the wood stove. The ambitious three-story home is architecturally unique in its details and craftsmanship. Built piece by piece by friends and family of the previous owners, this home is framed and sided from local red oak. It features exposed beams, a second floor overlook into the kitchen below, hand carved switch plates, stained glass windows, two covered decks, a solarium and large picture windows for passive solar heating. The open floor plan on each floor is anchored by a central 4-foot-square chimney that runs the vertical height of the house. One entire floor is surfaced with flagstone collected from the property. The home has two wood stoves. One, a cast iron Fisher that heats home and water. The other, a vintage Tirolia wood burning cook stove, great for cooking meals on. The refrigerator and propane cook stove are new appliances. After being largely vacant for more than a decade, forty years of work on the house and land resumed when Margaret and David moved in. This is not an active construction site. Rather, projects unfold as they do. The third floor, like the rest of the house, needs trim on the windows, repairs on walls with staining or a bit of damage, and new wiring on some of the lights. The pictures we’ve provided show the details. We’re doing some work on the house, mostly on the outside. So the front deck right now is off limits. There are other great places to sit though. We take pride in our home, our buildings and animals, our gardens and our land. Wildlife thrives here and abundance is everywhere. Having said all that, welcome to West Virginia! Our neighbor at the bottom of the mountain does have a salvage yard. However, we like to think that we have heaven at the top. Contact us to book a longer stay than our published maximum.
We live on a typical West Virginia rural road. It is single lane in many places and you will encounter deer in the road. Drive slow in case you come upon them. It's a narrow road, homes are modest, and the tree canopy is lush. Snow is plowed in a timely manner by the County in the winter. Cell service is unpredictable in West Virginia and at our place. In fact, it is intermittently available as you travel all around the state. Depending on your carrier, you may lose service shortly after turning onto Poe Run Road. We do have WiFi at the house. Please don’t stream videos or download files, we have limited data. Elkins is located on the edge of the Monongahela National Forest in the Allegheny Mountains of the multi-state region called Appalachia. We are 2.5 hrs driving distance from Pittsburgh and 4 hrs from Washington, DC. We are within easy driving distance to many scenic outdoor recreation hot spots including Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, Blackwater Falls, and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge for fishing, mountain biking, hiking and camping. We are just six miles from downtown Elkins, the home of Augusta Heritage Center and Davis & Elkins College. Augusta offers year round concerts, dances, a festival and other heritage arts events. One of the biggest annual events in the state, the famed Mountain State Forest Festival, takes place in Elkins, too. If you forget something, the town of Elkins is about 8 minutes away and you can easily get it there. You'll find Walmart, Kroger grocery, liquor stores, a few restaurants, a health food store, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware and more. Urgent care and a hospital are just minutes away if needed. The fire department services our road in the even more unlikely event they are needed.
  • Margaret is very responsive and sets the expectations so there are no surprises. David and Margaret were lovely hosts and very accommodating. The room is beautiful with a gorgeous view of the property. We were very comfortable. We also opted for the breakfast on our last morning and it was delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Margaret and David and hope to make it back!

  • Staying on Margaret and David's homestead was perfect. My nephew and i have an annual tradition where we take a little trip, usually in nature. I love to take himself outside of his norm, where he can learn about a different way of life. And this was just the place. David told us about the history of the place, the animals and more. He cooked us a delicious dinner and breakfast, we gobbled it all up and asked for seconds. It's a very simple accommodation but incredibly charming, especially if you love a natural way of life (don't mind compost toilet, bucket shower, bugs here or there etc.). David also gave us great tips on other towns to check out on our way back to Maryland. We had an awesome lunch and picked up some art in a nearby town. We would both love to return soon.

  • I highly recommend Margaret’s Homestead. The views are absolutely spectacular! The guest room has a spectacular view through the large window next to the bed, we fell asleep looking at the stars and moon every night! Such a relaxing getaway.

    Chelsea2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • the food that the hosts make is incredible and the bedroom is one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever had the pleasure to stay in, with a very comfortable bed, handmade wooden night table and supreme linens

    Catalina2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really great time and would love to come back in the future! Margaret and David are very good hosts and introduced us very good to their way of living. It was nice to relax and recharge at their incredible house. We also loved the interaction with the animals.

    Simon2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Really amazing Homestead, it was just what we needed for our trip and the views are amazing!

    Zak2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • After a long drive, pulling up to this piece of heaven on a mountainside was a perfect experience. Margaret and David are both very hospitable, knowledgeable and they offer a unique experience being homesteaders in West Virginia. My room was AWE-some. Climbing up the ladder to a room surrounded by huge glass windows gave amazing views of stars and the land. The bed was so comfortable and the room was cozy, yet spacious. The house is a work of art and doubles as the homebase for their amazing farm operation. In the morning I had a lovely chat with David about the business and in the evening Margaret showed me the wool she makes and the loom she thrifted! Their dedication to the earth and animals is beyond expectation, and I would have moved right in, as happy as a clam, if they let me! Wish I could have stayed longer. To anyone wanting a retreat, to learn about farming, or to just find solace in a perfect slice of America, stay here. Thank you!

    Megan2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret and David are wonderful hosts, and the Homestead is just the escape from the outside world that I hoped it would be. Margaret is also an excellent cook, with the majority of the food coming right from the Homestead land, so make sure you add meals!

It is a country setting in a secluded area, with Philippi, and Belington being the closet towns (each approximately 15 minutes away.) It is located along the beautiful Tygart River which is a great place for hiking, biking, swimming, sunbathing, photography, kayaking, rafting, fishing, four wheeling and horseback riding. The old railroad grade runs for miles along the river; with many breath taking sights, including Moat’s Falls, (two miles upriver). We are about 20 minutes from AB University, and 1 hour from WV University. We are located approximately 1 hour from Clarksburg, Elkins, Morgantown, Buckhannon, Fairmont, Davis/Thomas, and Canaan.

  • We really enjoyed our stay in the treehouse. The drive into the wilderness was rugged and beautiful, the setting of the treehouse was gorgeous, the fire was toasty and comfortable, and the hospitality of Ron and Shirley was outstanding! We plan to come stay again.

    Alicia2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Shirley and Ron are great. We took a side-by-side ride up the steep hill to the treehouse, which was our own personal glamping space. Loved it. It’s worth the nighttime trips to the outhouse.

    Virginia2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Shirley and Ron’s AirBnB is one of the best weekend getaways I’ve had in a long time. I brought my little pup out to escape the city for the weekend. We both enjoyed ourselves so much it was hard to leave. When I arrived, a nice little snowstorm blew through and everything was covered in snow. It made their already beautiful property that much more wonderful. They truly have thought of everything you would need and more. One of the fondest memories of the weekend was sharing a cup of coffee in their home before leaving (I didn’t want to leave!). I’m looking forward to bringing my wife back out in the summer. Also, make sure to take the time to hike the property. There’s an abundance of wildlife, creeks, caves, and a couple small waterfalls. Truly beautiful. Thank you, Ron and Shirley!

    Brian2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Shirley and Ron were extremely warm and welcoming. They thought of every little detail from having the fires going upon our arrival to the marshmallows and little chocolate treats. The treehouse was cute and cozy. My favorite part was the treat of using the wood fire stove and adding logs while reading and playing checkers. It’s the simple things in life and this beautiful little piece of heaven is the perfect place to be reminded that:) thanks again Ron and Shirley for sharing your space - we look forward to coming back

    Hannah2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • This place was amazing! It's on Ron and Shirley's farm which is huge and includes cattle, chickens, and maple syrup. The hosts are as sweet as can be and extremely helpful. It's a pretty long drive off the main road to get to their doorstep, but we made it in December in a rental sedan without much trouble (we followed Shirley's directions instead of Google Maps). Ron gave us and our luggage and our dog a lift in his ATV for the quarter mile up to the tree house, but the walk would have been manageable. He had a fire ready for us in the outdoor fire pit, and another in the wood stove downstairs. We used the camping stove to cook dinner, and then turned in early. The house is an elevated two-story cabin with a wood ladder to the second floor. It was pretty easy to get up and down, but our dog whimpered a lot whenever we left her on a floor we weren't on for too long. It's a little harder to get up and down the ladder carrying a 35 pound dog! There are battery powered lights, and places to charge your phone. I had cell service there with AT&T but my partner has T-Mobil and did not. The main bathroom is a well-kept outhouse. Definitely rustic, very beautiful, and the stars were lovely!

    Rosie2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Shirley and Ron's treehouse was an amazing retreat from the world. It's like camping except much easier. They've thought of everything and went above and beyond throughout our stay. Highly recommend.

    Alexandra2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse was much better than expected for a cozy weekend getaway. Ron and Shirley were fantastic hosts who were attentive when necessary but provided all the resources for a private weekend. We brought all camp kitchen supplies but they had most ready for us so save the packing space. Our hound loved exploring their property and we loved the peaceful sounds of nature in the evening.

    Jessica2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • A very lovely, cozy, tucked away, no frills, mountain-top escape! This is a very unique and special place that is perfect for anyone looking to get away from the commotion of every day life. If you find serenity in simplicity and find anxiety in complexity, this is your spot. The hosts, Shirley and Ron, are the sweetest and make this already awesome place exponentially better.

Ours is a modern, open family home on a quiet street convenient to downtown and D&E College. The guest area includes a room with a double room, a guest bathroom and loft area for lounging/working. A twin bedroom is also available for rent.
We are a perfect location for hiking, biking, fishing, or just relaxing in the Monongahela National Forest. Elkins is the perfect jumping off place for visiting the area. We have two private rooms available. This listing is for a room with one double bed The other listing has two single beds. Either room is available for rent or can be combined to accommodate a larger group. Guests will have their own bathroom. If both rooms are occupied this will be a shared bathroom. They may use the loft area for relaxing or join us in the living/dining room. The large deck and yard are available for guest use as well. A small refrigerator, microwave. coffee maker, electric kettle, glasses, dishes, and corkscrew are available in the guest area.
We are truly a well kept secret. People from our own town often say, "I had no idea this was back here," when they visit. Our house is just three blocks off of a main street, but located on a quiet, dead end street. In winter our street is not normally plowed. We do shovel our driveway but it is sloped. If you do not have snow tires you may find it challenging. We can arrange off site parking if that is the case.

  • Lisa and Brad's home is very clean and comfortable. They are gracious hosts and have thought of everything. Besides the great accommodations they provide a fridge, microwave, coffee & tea, kettle, Keurig, plates, bowls, and silverware. They have wonderful tips (and brochures) for places to hike which we spent most of our time doing. When we returned from a long day of hiking the shower was wonderful! We cannot say enough about this Airbnb. We plan to return in the near future!

  • We loved our stay in Kristin's cabin. The place came equipped with everything we needed, and when there was a mishap with the gas supply for the fireplace on Christmas, Kristin had a wonderful helper with us in no time at all. Note that the cabin is not buried in the woods, but is quite convenient to Elkins and surrounding activities. Highly recommend!

    Sarah2017-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stayed at Kristin’s cabin over Thanksgiving weekend with our little dog. We never met in person but communication was easy and she was responsive to all my questions. The cabin was a perfect jumping off point to explore Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks and not too far from Blackwater Falls. There is a good restaurant on the property and we also enjoyed trying Double Bit IPA at the tap room of Big Timber Brewing in Elkins. The cabin is nicely equipped for a romantic weekend and my husband and I even cooked a mini-Thanksgiving dinner in the kitchen.

There is a porch, fire ring, fire bowl, a portable restroom, an outbuilding laundry sink with a pump faucet and pressure shower. An ideal base to explore otter creek wilderness, the cheat river trail. Very close to Parsons, so supplies and emergency services are available nearby. *****Please note that wildlife such as bears, deer, snakes, and mice are regularly spotted in the area. I cannot stress how important it is to make sure you are responsible with food and food scraps. I recommend you keep any food containers in an air tight seal if possible and or in your vehicle. Also, kindly consider that this a primitive campsite setting and is not structure such as a conventional home or travel trailer. There is no flush toliet, but their is a portable restroom like you would see at an outdoor event such as a road race. *** You will want to bring with you anything you think you would need if you went camping including sleeping bags., blankets, a light source, firewood, and any utensils, etc. You will need to bring towels if you want to use the shower. Kindly leave everything as you find it for the next guest as i do not charge a cleaning fee and will report if it is left a mess. There will always be a large water jug to fill from a water source, 2 smaller glass dispensers for drinking water There is a red siphon pump to draw water out of the creek which I would only use as washing water, not for cooking or drinking. The blue container in the outbuilding has been filled with creek water for washing. There are 2 parking spaces, the one by the laurel bushes is best if it is muddy, icy, or otherwise slick since it has decline down into the road. The one close to the yurt is best for 4wd or dry conditions since it slopes slightly towards the creek. Please note the yurt is on a paved road with light traffic from the few neighbors who live up the mountain in the national forest. I would recommend that guests wear shoes when outside due to wildlife concerns, or other inconspicuous debris that remains from the house that once was on the property and was removed some years ago. Someone mentioned glass in a review and I pick up the very few and remaining pieces as I see them. I, or any guests, have not seen any pieces of glass in a long time. There is no glass near the yurt, or the creek, whatsoever. Kindly understand that primitive camping has inherent risks from wildlife, exposure, and acts of God, and by booking this property you agree to not hold The Retreat at Smoky Hollow liable for any loss or injury due to ordinary risks associated with this type of activity. Kindly ask any question and I will answer honestly and unemotionally. Thank you for looking and enjoy your stay!
Just a couple of miles from Parsons, which offers 24 hours gas, groceries, a few restaurants, emergency services, and access to the Allegheny highlands rail trail. Also close to cheat river access and national forest trails.
  • We had so much fun at Robert's place! The yurt was such a cool place to stay, and the decorations were so much fun! We loved the stream right behind the place, and it was so easy to find! It was a really unique experience!

  • We were thrilled with our stay in the yurt! The owner really thought of everything, seating, sleeping arrangements, storage , HEAT, and the little touches like lanterns and incense! We couldn’t be more pleased and is exactly as we expected. Would stay again!

  • Hiking the American Discovery Trail and found this little gem...nice facility to hang out in on such a rainy night. Very colorful with everything a hiker needs!

  • This is the perfect home away from home. It’s obvious Robert spent a lot of time and effort to make the yurt comfortable and welcoming to guests which was very nice to see. There is everything you possibly would need or even things you didn’t know you needed and the location is great. I would definitely enjoy staying there again. Also, any questions I had he answered quickly and was very helpful with anything I needed to know. This is a great place to stay to remind you that you don’t need a fancy hotel to have an amazing retreat away from home.

    Claudia2019-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is the one of the coolest spots i’ve ever been to. Anything you might have forgotten or didn’t realize you’d need (bug spray, pots and pans, water, maps, first aid things) Robert has it covered. Everything from the decor, the fire pit, the lovely steam flowing behind was perfect. Will 10/10 pick this spot again

    Sophie2019-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • Roberts description is totally accurate. He’s a great communicator and really has a lot of nice touches in the Yurt :) it is camping, so keep that in mind when you book. Loved the flowers planted out front.

BEAUTIFULLY REMODELED and only 15 minutes away from Elkins, West Virginia, where you can find the Gandy Dancer Theatre, Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Rail Road, and lots of fine dining. We are also about 20 minutes away from either Stuart's Park, or Kumbrabow State Park. You can hit the ski slopes of Snowshoe in about 45 minutes. Our house is very cozy, and our kitchen is fully furnished with everything you will need. From the coffee maker to pots & pans, we think you'll feel right at home.
This space is clean, quiet, and comfortable.
Located in a historic homestead community, you'll find a large flat yard filled with various fruit trees and berry bushes. We know you'll want to spend time relaxing in our yard, so we've included a horseshoe pit, fire ring, and a gas grill - bring your own charcoal!!
  • Great place! Very clean, and the host are quick to respond!

  • Grandma's guest house was sparkling clean, very cozy, and the fireplace was amazing.

    Christopher2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Kristie was great! She answered any questions we had promptly . The house has been remodeled and is super cute! The bathroom is a little small and cold but, the water was hot and our youngest enjoyed a hot bath in the claw foot tub. The fire place was wonderful after a day spent at snowshoe in 14* /snow/ wind. Check in was a breeze and upon opening the front door it smelled clean!! The towels were fresh and the house was spotless. We enjoyed lunch at "smoke on the water" and highly recommend "mama mia's " Dinner for 4 carry out special. ( both in Elkins) We had enough food for 4 at dinner, took the rest home and had another dinner meal and packed 2 lunches as well!!!! $27.99 Dinner for 4. (carry out only). The Large laundry room was wonderful to come into and remove our boots and wet clothes after Snowshoe. Enjoyed our stay and would do it again.

    Beth2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Our 3-day stay was great at Kristie's place. We enjoyed using the kitchen for breakfast and loved the gas fireplace.

Ours is a modern, open family home on a quiet street convenient to downtown and D&E College. The guest area sleeps four. We enjoy all sorts of travelers from singles just passing through to families with children looking to explore the area.
We are a perfect location for hiking, biking, fishing, or just relaxing in the National Forest. Ours is a modern, open family home on a quiet street convenient to downtown and D&E College. Elkins is the perfect jumping off place for visiting the area. The guest area is located on the second floor and includes one room with a double bed, a second room with two twin beds, a guest bathroom and loft area for lounging/working. The loft area has seating for five, a desk, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker and electric kettle. This space is ideal for a family or group of four traveling together.
  • Lisa and Brad were very kind and their home was so cozy. If you are looking for a place to stay in Elkins, this is it!

    Beth2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Pleasant surprise. The place was many times better than we imagined it would be. We’re coming back again soon. The town of Elkins and the surrounding area offering many recreational activities—a very special area.

    Paul2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa's space was very clean, close to town and she offered great tips for hiking. I highly recommend staying here if you are in need of a room...or two.

    Ron2019-11-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa and Brad were wonderful hosts and we had a lovely time in their home. They provided excellent wilderness adventure inspiration. The rooms were clean and comfortable We look forward to staying with them again!

  • Very clean and stylish. Fun family games! Great recommendation for breakfast at Scotties.

    Courtney2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa and Brad were amazing hosts, very friendly, hospitable, and kind. We were only in the area overnight, but would highly recommend their home for any length of stay. Everything was very nice and clean, comfortable, they have a great selection of games, etc. We would definitely love to return.

    Tara2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa and Brad are wonderful hosts. They made us feel at home and were quite friendly. The rooms are upstairs in a sort-of loft area. It is open to the downstairs but feels private enough. In the loft area, there's a large living room kind of space, two ample-size bedrooms and a bathroom with a double sink. If you visit, take a pair of slip-on shoes because the upstairs has been carpeted recently and Lisa and Brad prefer that you walk on the carpet without shoes. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

    Tom2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was wonderful! Truly a home away from home. It was very accommodating for our kids with plenty of games and toys which they loved. Brad and Lisa made us feel so welcomed and treated us like their own family. We were given plenty of helpful tips to make our stay in Elkins even better. We plan to return another time and would love to stay here again!

Warm woods, stonework, vaulted ceiling with skylights, fine cabinets, enormous granite kitchen island, Wii, wrap-around deck, and (2) Jacuzzi tubs make this much more than a cabin. Bring your family and friends with plenty of room to spread out. NEW: Extra disinfecting measures are in place in response to the Corona Virus. See below for more information ===>>
NEW: We are taking extra precautions due to the Corona virus. We are using Clorox wipes on all light switches, door knobs, bathroom fixtures, and also dipping kitchen utensils in bleach water between each set of guests. This is in addition to our usual thorough cleaning of fixtures, phone, countertops, furniture and floors. We are also putting into temporary storage all board games and our bins of toys In addition, per our Governor's order, anyone coming from New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, or Connecticut must self-quarantine for two weeks. That means that you would need to stay for at least two weeks and not leave the property. We can facilitate a pre-checkin grocery delivery with two weeks of provisions that will be at the house. You must also be asymptomatic and not have been in proximity with anyone who had recently been ill. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luxurious four bedroom plus game room, THREE full baths, sunroom/office, hot tub, spacious decks, master suite with Jacuzzi, 2nd bath with Jacuzzi, laundry, open (social) kitchen with modern appliances, screened porch with gas grill, and fine furnishings throughout. Great set-up for telecommuting if you can only manage a working vacation. Wireless satellite internet, speakerphone, computer desk, and office chair in the private sunroom. The property has private river beach access to the Shavers fork river and is engulfed in trees, adjacent to neighboring 30+ acres of privately-owned undeveloped and open fields, and situated just across the gravel road from the one-million acre Monongahela National Forest. The house features a stone fireplace, teak floors, vaulted ceilings, natural wood-plank paneling, wireless internet, 2 televisions with DVD players, stereo, and a 6 person hot tub. The kids bedroom includes a 32' flatscreen TV, Wii entertainment system (games available), assorted board games, Hot Wheels track, toddler puzzles, cards, and 100's of other toys and games. The gameroom has a card table and chairs, dart board, and water toys for the river. There are about 100 classic DVDs for various ages available for viewing. For a cozy winter, fall or early spring visit, the house features a forced-air gas furnace, supplemental baseboard heat in downstairs bedrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room (a moderate amount of firewood is provided). Pet friendly -- dogs only please, and no more than two dogs per reservation. Fee of $112 per stay applies Owners provide starter quantities of paper products, bathroom soap, and laundry/dish detergent. Personal toiletries are to be provided by Guests. All linens that you'd need are provided also. Cleaning fee covers laundry, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, bathroom/kitchen sanitizing, and garbage removal. Guests are expected to otherwise leave the house in the condition they found it. We want to ensure that this property is the right fit for you! This is our vacation home that we are sharing – we are not a resort with a maintenance, concierge, and cleaning staff – and our prices reflect that limitation. That said we have put together as many resources as possible to help you plan your trip and enjoy your stay as if it were your own vacation home. We also have tried to stock the house so that you would not want for much upon your arrival. If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot! Here are some things you should know... In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. It's advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel. The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. I've been told that the gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles. Because the house is surrounded by forests and the river there is plenty of nature to enjoy, but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set out-of-sight humane traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay. This is a NON-SMOKING rental with steep penalties for violations Restricted Sat-to-Sat rental between mid-June and mid-August. Minimum 3 night stays in Spring and Fall. Minimum 4 night stays for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years
Lush, wooded, and relatively secluded. This property has neighbors on one side and across the road, with open fields and the river on the other two sides. The location is remote yet accessible. Many amenities in 7k population Elkins is 20-25 minutes, and the ski areas are within (Canaan, Timberline, and White Grass 1 hour, Snowshoe 1:15 hour).
  • An ideal location in the woods for a get away. Everything needed is provided.

    Michael2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to unwind for the weekend and disconnect. A great location and a great home. Larisa's cabin was clean and spacious, with lots of activities to do in the home and around the area. She provided a lot of information about the home and area, with a lot of detail. I'd highly recommend this place if you have a chance to go.

    Daniel2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Larisa’s place was awesome. It comfortably fit 10 people. The kitchen and living room were great. The hot tub was a highlight. There’s a nice, short (~2 mile) hike in the Stuart Rec Area nearby the house called the River Loop Trail. The surrounding area was beautiful! Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.

    Tracy2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is beautiful and in a great location. It's large enough to fit a group but laid out with many different spaces to enjoy. We would love to come back in the summer to take a dip in the river just down the hill from the house! It looked like a perfect swimming hole. Great in the winter too though, we enjoyed the fireplace woodstove and the hot tub in the evenings. Would definitely book again.

    Peter2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is wonderful! I can't recommend it enough. I hope we make a visit to this cabin a yearly event.

    Jessica2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Larisa's cabin was wonderful! The location is beautiful, tucked away in the West Virginian mountains. We were a bit worried about the last stretch of road to the cabin through the mountains, but it ended up being just fine. There are some potholes that you need to be mindful about, but the road does not have any steep inclines or declines that would make it unusable in inclement weather. There are two neighbors which are relatively close to the house, however neither were home during our stay. There is a large field useful for kids to run around in, and great access to the river. The house is beautifully stocked, with plenty of things you would not have expected to find. The house has a cozy feeling to it and has plenty of space to spread out. The town of Elkins is about a 25 minute drive away, and has anything you might need. We did experience a couple issues with our trip, including some hot tub maintenance that had to be done and the basement bathroom becoming unusable, however Larisa always responded quickly and refunded us for the hot tub fee. Highly recommend!

    Amy2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is large, but cozy. It had the basic amenities we needed. We had a great time staying there!

    Anita2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great place to go and disconnect. It was a nice reset, although we had to cut it short because of the snow storm. We enjoyed our time here!

Four a/c window units during summer months; gas furnace and fireplace during winter months. We love this home, and we hope it'll fit your needs while visiting this beautiful area of West Virginia.
The main floor boasts a large galley kitchen, dining room table with seating for 5, two living spaces with lots of cozy seating, and a half bathroom. The kitchen is equipped with a large fridge, gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, and Keurig coffee maker, along with simple cooking and dining needs (e.g., pots, pans, plates, bowls, etc.). A wood staircase leads upstairs to three bedrooms, an office, a laundry room, and a shared full bathroom. Plenty of closet (with hangers) and dresser space available in each bedroom. Driveway parking is available for one medium vehicle. Back alley and street parking are also available; cars must be removed for street cleaning on Mondays before noon from March-October. Allergen notice: While we do not allow pets in the home, we have formerly had a cat on the furniture, and so we can not guarantee an allergen free home.
This home is about one mile (a comfortable, mostly flat, walk) to downtown, Davis & Elkins College, El Gran Sabor (our favorite!), and TipTop Coffee. Walk just a few blocks to visit the local brewpub, Big Timber Brewing, or to attend a Friday night Elkins High School football game. Our beautiful community greenhouse, Mary's, is just a block behind our home, and Riverbend Park is just a short few blocks walk. The immediate neighbors are friendly folks who spend time on their porches, but who generally keep to themselves. Occasionally, you'll hear a ruckus from folks across the road having a gathering, but that's pretty rare.

  • I am so glad that I checked AirBnB "just in case" before I booked a hotel for our post-Polar Express stay in Elkins. The house was comfortable, clean, and well-stocked with the little things but not cluttered. It's just such a lovely house with a charming sort of character. The host made the process effortless -- clear instructions, quick communication. We were planning to leave pretty early the next day, but the couch and domino set sucked us in until almost check out time. On our way out, my kids made me take a picture on them on the front porch because apparently they liked it too.

    Jessica2019-12-06T00:00:00Z

  • What a wonderful birthday getaway I had. Such a beautiful cabin and so clean. Blaise is an awesome host, he went above and beyond for us. Tonya keeps the cabin imaculant. We definitely will be staying again. I love the area, it is so beautiful. We love it at this cabin so much and the beautiful surroundings. Also I would recommend going down by the river, so beautiful and peaceful. This is just what we needed.

  • You cannot beat this spot for the price. Only about 15-20 minutes off the main street in Elkins, on a winding but well-maintained gravel road right on the Shaver's Fork. The river was low when we stayed in October but still gorgeous, great for kids. Saw deer cross maybe 50 yards downstream and fresh racoons prints in the mud. The house is cozy and has everything you need, including a woodstove but also central heat. Super clean and well stocked. Both bedrooms have no doors, just curtains, so not super private. As someone already noted the tap water has a sulfur smell but bottled water for drinking is easy, and a hot shower still feels good after a day in the outdoors. Blaise was at the lower part of the property for the first part of our stay, he gave us a great tip to go climb the Bickle Knob Observation Tower that's only a short drive away on another nice gravel road that goes from the property. A great and friendly host who clearly loves the place.

  • The pictures do not do this place justice. Blaze is an excellent host and his home is wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and close proximity to the creek is exactly what we were looking for.

  • It was the perfect spot for our son’s groomsmen to stay for the weekend of his wedding. They enjoyed a cookout and plenty of room to spread out. The river is right behind the cabin. Blaise responded quickly and made himself available if needed. He does warn you that the water is a bit strong smelling, so definitely be sure to bring bottled water. But just a note, my parents stayed at the Hampton Inn in town and the water smelled just about the same. It’s just part of the Elkins charm. You will certainly enjoy the countryside along the river. We saw deer every time we drove into town and geese floating on the river. Couldn’t ask for a better host! Thanks again, Blaise!

  • This rental is the perfect getaway for the weekend! So much to do and see in this little town! Definitely worth the trip to enjoy the outdoors and some family time. Blaise’s place was just as described. It was clean, cozy, and comfortable. He thought of everything you could possibly need or want while you are visiting. Very good hosts and we would definitely visit again!

  • Blaise was very accommodating and told us about local places to eat and things to do. The cabin is lovely and a great place to experience nature and take a break from the city life.

  • If you want to join nature you should book this place. At the edges of the Monongahela Natural Forest. Near Elkins, homeground to Hiawatta. There is a river just accross the gravel road that devides Blaise his paradise in two parts: the sleep, BBQ, kitchen and living area-part, The red house. And then there is the outdoor swiming, fishing, canoing, soccer, camping, hunting area along the river at the other side of the gravel road. This road is only used by locals. Lots of things to do. The house very confortable and well equiped! Unfortunately the washing machine was broken, but I’m sure Blaise get that fixed in a blink of an eye! Blais is a great host, very friendly and always willing to help.

  • We wanted to get out in nature (from the D.C. area) and were not disappointed. The cabin is located next to a beautiful river roughly 20 minutes outside of Elkins, WV; a cute town with everything you would need. The cabin far exceeded our expectations. It was very roomy, clean, and well stocked with everything one would need (hot cocoa, bathroom necessities, first aid kit, plenty of firewood, etc.); yet it felt very cozy and warm. The large kitchen allowed us to make great breakfasts and Blaise provided great hiking tips around the area that we took advantage of. It was a bit rainy throughout our stay (it was late March after all), so we were able to spend some time in the cabin playing games and went down to the river often to fish and skip rocks. We had a great time and would certainly rent this cabin again.
