Places to stay in Volcano

Places to stay in Volcano
Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

  • This is a magical place, you can't ignore your inner child when you're at the tree house. You have all the privacy in the world and it's a place where you truly connect with nature. Loved it!

  • We had a wonderful time at Kristie's beautiful tree house. The house and the location are quite spectacular! Not only did we enjoy the beautiful house in the wilderness but we also truly enjoyed the little things like the apt books and games she had left for us. My wife really enjoyed showering with the view of the wilderness 🤭. Also, special mention for her hospitality and ease of check-in and out, everything was very smooth. Would definitely recommend this experience! Thanks Kriste! 😃

  • Stay here. Just do it. If you love the outdoors and just getting way, this is the spot for you. Communication was a breeze and finding it was easy because she literally covered any questions/needs that could have come up. Beautiful spot.

  • Amazing place. 100 per cent would recommend. Super private and great romantic get a way. PICTURESQUE!! Great host too, organised and thoughtful

  • What an enchanting place! I am not an outdoors person, so this treehouse was the closest to camping I will ever come. Glamping is an understatement. Perfectly decorated, lovely touches such as brownies, robes, and postcards to send, and a sense of wonder waking up surrounded by lush forest, orchids, and a family of pigs and chickens. And the stars at night! The eco friendly utilities worked without a hitch, but we tried to use the electricity minimally to be sure we kept enough of a reserve. An SUV was definitely necessary to access the road to the tree house and I would recommend checking in during daylight hours to make getting situated easier. 15 minute drive to Volcano National Park, making this the perfect home base for exploring. Easy drive to Hilo.

  • This place is amazing! All we could hear at night was the rain and frogs, the shower is awesome, you can open the glass shades and you're pretty much showering in the jungle/forest, super quiet. It's all solar but we had no issues with it, easy to use and super comfortable. Perfect get-a-way.

  • This treehouse is like stepping into a Swiss Family Robinson themed Wes Anderson movie. It's easy to tell how much thought went into the build and design. Kristie's attention to detail makes living simply feel so luxurious. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a unique, blissful adventure.

  • The big island treehouse is something out of a dream! This place is magical. Kristie has included so many personal touches that really just go above and beyond. This treehouse is everything you need to find some peace and relaxation in the jungle paradise of Hawaii. Kristie’s directions to the place were easy to find using google maps and the gps coordinates. While it is off the grid it still surprisingly had decent cell service and internet service if you need it, but I suggest just turning off and enjoying the trip. I spent all day reading on the giant tree swing, watching the roosters and creatures of the forest. At night we found the birds singing a peaceful song to us as we went to sleep. I 10000% would suggest booking your stay here.

We are a real treehouse at the summit of Kilauea. We are less than five minutes from the main gates to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park is open once again, and visitors are in awe of the changes wrought by the recent eruption. This is a wonderful time to plan a visit to a place not heavily touristed and central to adventures to be had on this part of the island. #weaccept TA-020-255-1296-01
This is a custom designed treehouse, built by the same crew you see in Treehouse Masters on TV. The Jurassic attitude of the rainforest is preserved on the grounds. We also have a wedding venue nearby you may view in the photos. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park borders the end of the street but can be accessed only through the main gate about two miles away. *** 2019 notes: There is no surface lava at this time. Our air quality is now some of the best anywhere. There are scant emissions from the volcano. Steam comes out of the ground, signs of the hot magma below. The steam is not VOG. There is currently no eruption. There are no signs an eruption is coming, or restarting. Volcanoes are unpredictable but they do give signs before going into action. Those signs typically are increased seismicity over a period of weeks and months, and sometimes years. No signs currently. The changes in the park due to the last eruption cannot be shown other than in imax format- they are that enormous. This is an excellent time to visit. Notes regarding cancellation and changes: please read the policy as published. Airbnb writes the policies and all of us must adhere to them. If you are feeling a need to cancel, you may wish to reconsider and change dates instead or discuss all options with us directly before deleting your reservation. Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series. The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes. The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist. There is no kitchen. There are plates and utensils so you can bring in take out and enjoy your meal either indoors or outdoors in solitude. There is a sink so your plates and utensils may be cleaned. You can make hot beverages. There is a French press and a tea pot. We encourage you to enjoy the nearby restaurants and recognize the treehouse experience is not a cooking experience. This is not by our choice but a change we are forced to make to comply with anti-vacation rental legislation on our island. The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. We are asked from time to time if more than two people can stay in the treehouse. We can especially understand that families would like to bring their children to share this experience. The treehouse is a two person space. Everything is designed to be a honeymoon experience. While it is possible for more than two people to sit together and chat, only two can sleep over. There is no rollaway bed, nor is there room for one or for any other furniture beyond what is there already. Hall of Fame: The treehouse has been featured in Extreme Cribs, on episode 13. The Ellen Show: Kim Douglas's Tropical Vacation Ke Ola Magazine Volcano Tree House story in July - August 2011 edition Trip Advisor: One of the Ten Most Romantic Places to Stay (global selections) PureWow feature Treehouses of the World, Travel Channel European segment, by Treehouse Masters series Buzzfeed blogs and news articles published globally You will have access to the entire property, including the small structure below the treehouse near where you park your car. You may safely lock your luggage inside that room and use the day packs inside during your stay. If you use a CPAP machine, please contact us prior to making a reservation. There is only one treehouse on the property. We live nearby and come by regularly to maintain the treehouse. It is likely we will meet you on arrival. Otherwise, we are available by cell phone, text, email. When we are away, someone else who lives locally will be available to greet you and take care of your needs. The treehouse requires daily attention because it is off grid. This is generally done between 11 am and 4 pm, and most guests are away for that portion of the day. We do ask that if you are staying all day at the treehouse, that you communicate with us to let us know when one of us can come up and take care of the place. The neighborhood is mostly old growth rainforest with a few houses here and there. When you drive up, you will notice there are neighbors across the street and next door. You will forget about them once you walk through the moongate and enter the world of the treehouse. Sometimes of a late afternoon and evening you may hear a local hula halau practicing. We hope you find the sounds of laughter and Hawaiian language and music adds to the ambience. A rental car is a necessity. While there is public transportation, it is a long slow trip up the mountain. Uber and Lyft are available here, but the distances are such that renting a car tends to be more efficient. The park is a couple of miles down the road, and so large you will want to drive and not attempt to walk. Volcano Village is about a mile up the road. You might like to stroll up and back. If walking into the village for dinner, a flashlight for your return is an absolute must. We provide - please take it with you! If you are planning a first trip to our island, we suggest that you stay 2 or 3 nights at the treehouse. Please contact us for for discussion before you reserve if you wish. The island is truly big, and most people would rather spend the night on the west side of the island rather than return to Volcano after a day of play over there. Although we show rates for long term stays, we would like to discuss plans with you before completion of a stay of 5 days or longer. When you decide you want to stay at the treehouse, you are coming to a place unlike any other. There are other treehouses, but each is unique. This treehouse is off grid. This means it requires hands on service, every day. For most people, this is a seamless thing that happens while they are off adventuring. Every once in awhile, people come and do not want to leave, at all. We understand, but we do want to let you know that we must enter the treehouse on a daily basis to service the composting toilet. The hot tub also requires attention. The treehouse is in the forest. It is inside the trees, and this means easy critter access. To keep them outside, we carry your rubbish away and make sure your food is stored adequately. It is not a good idea to leave unwashed dishes for these same reasons. This is the tropics. There are insects. They are not as prolific here as at lower elevations, but they do exist, and will visit you especially at dusk with lights on. Spiders are residents of the forest. They are food for the birds. If you love the birds, please tolerate their food supply. We empty the house of spiders daily but we do not poison. The spiders come back at will. They are small, and stay in the corners. They leave evidence of their visit in the form of webs. We do our best to be inhospitable to them, but they persist. When there is weather, like hard rains and winds, from your perch in the trees you will experience the sound and feel in ways you may have not before. The house is tight - the weather does not enter if the doors and windows are closed. But the sounds can be formidable. You will feel close to nature.
The neighborhood is part undeveloped rainforest and part lots with houses. There are no tract homes - every house is individually designed and built. There are no street lights so at night it is very dark. The forest tends to obscure moonlight. There is a hula halau that practices nearby some afternoons, and you can hear their Hawaiian music and chants late in the day.
  • What can I say? An incredible stay!! A must visit Airbnb. I would fly to the Big Island again just to stay on this property. The communication was excellent. We had some pretty rainy weather during our stay so our check in time changed, but the hosts were quick to respond to us and adapt to our check in needs. They met us at the property and showed us around the treehouse. The Treehouse itself is AMAZING. The entrance is grand, the hot tub outside is incredible, shower outside is such a neat touch, the compostable toilet works great. Everything about the treehouse was impeccable. There is a fireplace to keep warm on cooler/rainy days/nights. There is also WIFI available, although the data in the area is pretty good so we did not utilize the WIFI. A 10/10 stay. Highly recommend. Cannot say enough good things! A dream come true for those looking for a unique stay!

  • Wow! I’ve been visiting this island for 20 years and this was such a unique experience even after I thought I had done it all! Super comfy bed, the hot tub was so fun and luxurious and the outdoor shower felt amazing in the cool air. Location is so ideal for visiting the Volcano National Park. We loved it!

  • Had a great stay here, wife loved it. Close to Volcano and the National Park. Exactly as in the pictures and a very unique place to stay. Plenty of power for everything we needed, good heater, off the grid no problem at all. Loved it and would return.

  • A highly romantic hideaway for a couple. This is a very special place hard to find elsewhere. It is exactly as described in the add. Important is to read these instructions to understand the limitations of a tree house and the fact that local taxes are charged separately. Smooth communication, and daily service. Very close the the Volcano National Park so a great place to enjoy the park.

  • Cool space if you want to get off the map for a couple days. Highly recommend using the soaking tub and outside shower. It’s awesome!

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • I had a wonderful time with my family! There were playground equipment for children aged 0 and 4 to be able to play with fun, and the response was quick and complete. I want to stay again!

  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

  • This is a hostel with attentive consideration from the host. The house is very clean and there is no shortage for me.

    Sooji2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a great week at Morris and Yuka’s place in Keaau. We were amazed by the amenities in the house - it was extremely well stocked with everything you could need and then some! I always wish for a lighted magnifying makeup mirror (which is usually only found in really fine hotels) - well guess what! We were also amazed by the gifts of food that were waiting for us - fruit, coffee, candy, wine, bottled water, eggs, rolls, jam, butter, and sausage. I thought that was very generous. The listing was very clear and accurate about the road noise - this did not bother us, but it might bother some. There were also frog and bird noises, which, again, did not bother us. We liked that we could recycle and send our fruit and veggie scraps to the compost pile, like we do at home. The location was safe and convenient to Hilo and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Morris was a great communicator, and we corresponded frequently through Airbnb whenever I had questions. It was a great stay and a good getaway from the cold upstate NY winter. Mahalo to Morris and Yuka!

Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!
  • Amazing! So glad we stayed here. What a unique opportunity in today’s world to get away from technology and enjoy the beautiful sights/sounds of the jungle. This was a stay we’ll never forget. The space is even better than imagined as are the hosts. Also loved the opportunity to see what it’s like to live off grid. They’ve thought of everything; you’ll love this place!

    Brad2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really cool oasis in the rainforest near Volcanoes National Park. We only stayed for one night, but it was great. We loved being up above the tree line and looking out the giant window from bed into the forest. The shower is fantastic and the sound of the rain on the roof gave everything an extra cozy vibe. Really fun addition to our trip and all the AirBNBs that we stayed in.

    Brian W.2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful experience! The space is unique and the location is a great balance of secluded and near other human beings.

    Kat2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A fun experience. Everyone should do it Atleast one time in your life! Great host!

    Crystal2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • We have a fantastic time staying at the Mokuea Tree House. It is definitely one of the more unique AirBnB experiences that we have had. It’s off the grid and located in a beautiful area on the Big Island. It’s really close to Volcanoes National Park so it made our visit to the park very easy. The Thai food truck down the road (Tuk Tuk) is amazing and definitely a must visit with limited food options nearby. During our stay, I unfortunately left my wedding band behind after checkout. The hosts were FANTASTIC in working with us to get me my ring back, I have nothing but good things to say about the Mokuna Tree House and cant wait to visit again sometime.

  • True to description, was not hard to find and good roads that were ok to drive on both day and night. They had lights on the gate to make it easy to spot! Volcano NP is only a 10minute drive and lots of other things to do and places to eat 10 - 20 minutes away.

King Bed, & 'Bali Style' outdoor shower- Apartment at street level in downtown Hilo Free parking. NOTE 14.96% TAX PAYABLE UPON ARRIVAL . CLEANING FEE OF $50 APPLIED FOR STAYS OF 7 DAYS OR MORE.
Enter from our garden courtyard, and hear the sound of running water from the stone pond beside the entryway. There is the feeling of 'sanctuary' here. This apartment is something a little exotic for your visit to Hilo. Charming architectural features include stone and teracotta tile floors, a timber wall and wooden beams. The Lo'i features King sized bed. Lo'i' is the Hawaiian name for the wetland taro that grows in clear running water. This apartment was formerly a 'Poi factory' where the staple taro vegetable was processed and was a much loved icon for Hilo locals for several generations and since the 1980's it was converted to a clothing store where two leading Hawaiian designers got their start. ..Fast forward to 'now' and you will find this is a self contained apartment with a bedroom, a sun room, private bathroom and outdoor shower area. A ceiling fan helps to cool the bedroom and due to the helpful suggestions of our guests we have added extra privacy by hanging a curtain on the rear door. There's no kitchen here but there is a mini fridge and a tea & coffee station. This may work for travelers who don't plan on spending vacation time cooking. Once you step out onto the street, there are plenty of great restaurant choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner within one or two blocks of The Lohi. This apartment is part of a complex of several old homes which have been refurbished and restored and is called 'The Lotus Garden.' On the property is a two bedroom guest cottage called 'The Sugar Shack' and a three bedroom vacation home called 'The Lotus.' Both of these homes are listed with airbnb.com. Our guests continue to let us know that our central location makes their stay with us easy and convenient. You can enjoy the convenience of being in the same block as some great budget cafes and restaurants as well as grocery stores and the Farmer's Market. Most visitors do hire a car to see the many remote spots on the island. If you are looking for an alternative to the major rental companies, just ask us for a recommendation for someone renting cars.
Hilo is a great town to walk about in and explore because of its small size. The heart of Downtown Hilo is only 3 blocks. In this area you will find wonderful restaurants and several great venues for live music. Keawe street is home to sushi and other restaurants, plus an open air bistro & bar plus several cafes, plus a Kombucha bar, a Kava bar and two great sushi restaurants. There's also a farmer's market on Bayfront and plenty of little stores to browse in. We love the slower pace of life here and the many artists, musicians and eccentrics who call this home.
  • A great little spot in Hilo. A nice little enclave and walking distance to many of Hilo’s attractions.

    Niall2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • This beautifully furnish space made our time spent in Hilo one to remember. The place is very easy to find and centrally located right in Hilo town. A short walk will get you to a variety of restaurants, shops, the beach and a lovely farmers market. The shower was a major highlight. Located outdoors next to a calming fountain, the sound of running water and coquí frogs made for a Spa-like experience. I would highly recommend this space to anyone looking to delight in the charming character of Big Island.

  • We stayed here on our first night in Hilo and it was a perfect homebase. Just a couple blocks from the farmer's market, and walking distance to lots of great restaurants. We didn't have any issues with heat or noise. Really comfortable bed. Would definitely stay there again!

  • Loved staying here for a quiet evening away. Great location - Lived in Hilo for three years and hadn't even realized this little gem was here.

    Kaylah2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing spot in the heart of downtown Hilo that provides very easy access to everything in the area. The room is beautiful and the amenities are great, they left us coffee, sugar, milk, and a French press in a basket the first morning which was a great touch. Very chill host too.

  • Highly recommend staying at the Lotus Garden. It was very clean and the shower was especially nice. Jasper was super helpful in allowing us to drop our bags early as we explored Hilo, accommodated an early check in, and gave recommendations around town. Thanks so much!

Our Retreat is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike the nearby beaches, forests, and volcanoes and to simply enjoy life. Our place is a peaceful spot completely off the grid in nature. It is 8 miles to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You’ll love our place because of the location, the ambiance, and the outdoor space. Our goal was to bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
This beautiful peaceful gem is located 8 miles to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The house is secluded off the road for privacy and to be as close to nature as possible. The house is elevated 15 feet but the bed elevates you 20 feet off the ground. It is quite a unique experience. Arrival You first arrive at a gravel driveway and a wood chipped winding path. You pass beside and under the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops and orchids as well as the tree canopy. The trail to our house is about 120 feet deep in seclusion. There are little pockets of ferns and flowers along the trail as well as a Ganesh and a Buddha keeping a peaceful eye on our little sanctuary. Downstairs Lanai You will find yourself on the lower deck/lanai. This lanai is surrounded by hanging plants and places to relax in your own private Zen. There is an 8-foot teak Balinese Bale' daybed to lounge in and it can be a place to relax that is also functional. During our travels to Bali, Indonesia one of our favorite memories is laying in a daybed surrounded by plants and nature, complete Zen and that is what we have re-created in Hawaii. This daybed is a beautiful space to be next to nature and relax, read a book, take a nap and enjoy life. Remember it is vacation time! Looking across from the daybed is a handmade teak bistro set to sip some coffee or tea, read a book or play a game. There are two half tables where you can make a cup of coffee or tea or pick up a bottled water. Downstairs bathroom The center walkway has two barn doors with separate bathroom and shower areas. The shower is a large space with a ten-foot ceiling and large shower "rainwater" nozzle that mimics the soft falling of rain. The shower is powered by solar and on-demand propane for heat. There is a bench to sit and relax and soak in the moment. With the forest in mind, the shower room has bamboo walls and hanging plants to create unique ambiance. The mist from the shower help feed the plants/orchids. There is cruelty-free and nature-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. Toiletries in case you forgot any are provided in the bathroom. Across from the shower is the bathroom with woven bamboo walls and a handmade Koa wood wash basin, flushing toilet, mirror, vanity and toiletries for the shower and bathroom are provided in the baskets. In the center walkway, there is another handmade Koa wood wash basin. Upstairs Lanai: You are now winding up the stairs and you arrive to the upstairs Lanai. Another place to breathe and relax. As you explore upstairs, the covered upper deck/lanai catches the rainwater to turn into reusable shower and toilet water. The covered lanai gives you the chance to sit out in the rain forest and watch the rainforest replenish itself. The animals and trees become animated at different times of the day. At night you can stargaze. The furniture is inviting you to “sit and take a load off." There you can breathe in the forest and enjoy the scenery and views of the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops. Towering above you, 40-60 feet in height, are Ohia, Koa, Guava and Eucalyptus trees which comprise the tree canopy. There are wicker chairs with overstuffed cushions and a cozy footrest for two. There are side tables for drinks and snacks and a small table you can play cards on. At night the Coqui Frogs will serenade you with their mating songs from the trees. Bedroom: As you pass through the keyless entry window door you will find another gem. There is an airy feel due to 12 foot ceilings and cathedral style windows in the trusses along with three 4x8 foot windows. Then you will see our little gem of a bed: we are very proud of our own designed “perch platform bed” that nestles you 4 feet in the air. You will feel like you are perched in a tree. The comfy mattress makes for a perfect and tranquil night sleep. The view from the bed is a panoramic view from the 8x4 foot front bay window and on clear nights you can gaze at the stars through the cathedral style windows in front and behind the bed. Now it is your choice to watch stars, birds or the clouds from the bed. There is a built in closet within and beneath the bed where you can put your suitcases or hang your clothes. This bed has it all and we made it to simplify and organize your luggage. No messes, all hidden and contained in the semi walk in closet. On the sides of the bed are two sets of stairs and each side has their own charging USB station for your phone or tablet. Birds, amphibians and animals: Animals you may see in the gardens or in the treehouse: Coqui Frogs, a variety of lizards, Geckos, Jackson’s Chameleons, Endangered Pueo owls have been spotted intermittently at our property. The endemic black-billed ‘apapane, salmon-billed i’iwi, the white and brown ‘elepaio, and the yellow-green colored ‘amakihi are some of the forest birds of Hawaii that can be found. Additionally, feral pigs occasionally scamper about the forest floor but do not like human interaction. Pests: Mosquitoes. This is the rainforest so mosquitoes are common. We provide DEET and non-DEET bug sprays or you can bring your own. We do ask that you do not spray yourself while on our furniture or linens. It stains and is almost impossible to get out of linens. Mosquitoes: we offer bug spray Here is a list of the amenities that are available to you: • Bale’ Daybed • Bistro set and Rattan seating • Platform bed and closet • Outdoor shower  • Flushing toilet with septic • Cruelty-Free Soap and Enviro-Friendly/Shampoo/Conditioner • Towels • Ceiling fan and light • Clean sheets • Bathroom and center sinks • Ice cooler for food and drinks • Mugs and cups for drinks • Maps and Hawaii destination books to use • Cards • Board Games • Books • Outlets (3-prong and USB styles) • Flashlights • Off-road parking • solar fairy lights • solar lights • local snack and water bottles • Bug spray and Citronella candles BEFORE YOU BOOK We wanted to be precise on any hindrances that you may experience we call it uniqueness but make sure you know what to expect before booking our space. We love our house and we are sure you will as well for a Zen –like peaceful experience. The house is off-grid and self sufficient but tradeoffs come with being unique and off-grid. 1. The Rainforest. The rain forest name says it all. How unique is it to be in the United States and in a Rain Forest close to a National Park? The green you will be surrounded by is powered and fed by the rain. It rains 30% of all days. The forest rejuvenates and replenishes with every rain. Our little house lives off the rain catchment therefore we enjoy the rain in all aspects: It gives life; it gives us water. You can experience anything from sun, to mist to torrential downpour. The volcano helps with this ecological system and therefore it is a unique experience to be had but rainforests are not for everyone. 2. The Treehouse, it is 15 feet off the ground. If afraid of heights this is a mild view but might not be right for you. There are only 2 levels of sturdy stairs to climb. No ladder like other places but if any problems walking back 200 feet to our structure or climbing 2 flights of stairs, you may want to reassess staying here. You will need to carry your luggage back and up the stairs. We have a wagon for use but you will still need to haul the luggage or items you are bringing to the house. 3. The Rain. The rainwater catchment system provides water for the water faucets, shower and toilet. It is filtered but not sanitized and in the jungle it is unwise and unsafe to drink the water. We provide water for you to enjoy during your stay. If you consume large amounts of water you might want to bring some with you as well. 4. The Noise. The rain catchment water pumps do make a small amount of noise but only when in use for showers, sinks, and flushing the toilet. The rain falling off the tree canopy does make noises when falling from 40-60 feet and hitting the structure and covered canopy. Additionally, there is a water trap for the structure on the back wall that does make a soft noise while gathering the water when the rain is falling moderately hard. At night, the Coqui’s chirping/singing can be loud. We love the serenade as it drifts us off to sleep but some are bothered by the frogs chirping. During the day and at dusk the native beautiful songbirds can be loud while gathering food and communicating with each other. There are also neighborhood dogs that can be heard barking intermittently in the distance. The last potential "noisy" concern may be the stillness of a forest or the absence of noise which can bother some people that are not use to “unplugging” from technology. 5. Solar Power. The solar panels are located on the roof and batteries are located downstairs. When the skies are clear and sunny the panels gather sunlight and convert into energy but when overcast or raining the solar panels gather small amounts of energy. We have ample amounts but still limited energy. You can run your devices but must be aware of energy conservation because there is only so much stored per day and it is all dependent on the weather conditions and what you are consuming. No hairdryers or irons are allowed for this reason: too much energy consumption. We have battery operated and solar lights throughout the structure as well. Phones and tablets can be charged at anytime with USB ports but laptops should be charged sparingly. 6. The Bugs. Mainly mosquitoes. They are not big but they are present in the rain forest. Hawaii does have mosquito borne illnesses, but mostly on the other side of the island in the Captain Cook area. Being in a rain forest you do need mosquito awareness. Wear mosquito repellant that we supply to you. If you are visiting Hawaii I would suggest buying your own bug spray and sunblock, you will need it throughout the island. With all these considerations…we absolutely love our house and find it to be tranquil while energizing us physically and mentally for the day. We love living in nature but being close to all things. 7. This treehouse has no cooking facilities. We encourage our guests to taste the different flavors that the island has to offer. • 8 miles (13 minutes) to Hawai’i Volcano National Park • 12.2 miles (18 minutes) to Keaau • 20.4 miles (33 minutes) to Hilo • 21.8 miles (35 minutes) to Rainbow Falls • 23.5 miles (35 minutes) to Pahoa • 34.8 miles (51 minutes) to the Lava Viewing area at Kalapana (no direct route) • 36 miles (58 minutes) to Akaka Falls • 45.3 miles (54 minutes) to Naalehu/South Point
The treehouse is on a quiet gravel road a little over a mile from the highway. The nearest neighbors are a few acres away in all directions. It is remote but close to all things. We have great neighbors but they love their privacy as we love ours. Orchid Isle Estates is surrounded by tree canopies and a myriad of orchids. There are some great restaurants in the town of Volcano as well as in Hilo, Kea'au and Pahoa. Please see our guide at the house for more details There is a little local store, Hirano's, close by for small items and a quick bite. There are two stores in Volcano, a big grocery store in Kea'au and more in Hilo. Farmers Markets are amazing here and no matter what the day you can probably find one open. I have a guide to farmers markets in my book in the treehouse. Our guide to the island sights is our personal opinion to find off the wall touristy and untouristy areas of interest. Beaches, farmers markets, waterfalls, hikes and lava tubes are all contained in the book at the treehouse. I also have printed out guides for you to take as well.
  • I surprised my boyfriend for his 50th. We both fell in love with the treehouse. We felt like we were in an enchanted forest. The bed was super comfy and having coffee was a plus. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place :)

  • What an experience. Loved the little details about this place- the hot shower and variety of soaps was a treat. Tea at night and coffee in the morning made it very comfortable. I would recommend this to the adventurous types who are comfortable with the outdoors!

  • This place was the highlight of my trip. Very cute and full of nature. I wish there was more light in the bottom or at least wifi coz we had no network at all.

  • Amazing tree house experience. Loved listening to the rain all night. Short drive to Volcanoes National Park. We brought drinking water but it was not needed as Britt and Michael had already provided bottled water, as well as many other amenities to enjoy this beautiful tree house in the jungle.

    Anna2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This treehouse is the perfect getaway and such a cool place! Definitely the place to stay if you’re looking for a place that’s quiet, serene, and unique (being tucked away in the rainforest...very neat!). Brittany and Michael were great hosts that responded quickly and provided lots of helpful information prior to checking in. They have a book with recommendations and places to see or try that we found to be very helpful as we navigated the Big Island. We spent a lot of time out and about during the day and coming back here in the evening was so relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommend this place to anyone spending time on the island!

  • This was such an incredible experience. Brit and Michael's place was honestly such an amazing experience! It's even more beautiful than the pictures. It truly exceeded our expectations. Wish we had booked more days here as we celebrated our honeymoon. It was so magical and so peaceful! As soon as we arrived, we noticed how clean it was and the bed was so comfortable! The road is really tight and had difficulty reversing. Other than that. Everything else was exceptional! HANDS DOWN THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN VOLCANO AREA!

  • Great place to stay. Was a way cooler experience than we anticipated. Relaxing and off the grid. Everything was so clean and welcoming. Bed was super comfortable and the rain at night was peaceful and calming. The seating areas both upstairs and downstairs were so wonderful to just sit and visit. Would love to come stay again when we are in the area!!

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • Adventure awaits! Clean-thoughtful touches-artistic and serene. Book and enjoy for yourself!

  • What a treat! Fantastic, off-grid getaway near VNP. Would highly suggest 4-wheel drive, especially with rain around. Gravel roads with deep puddles are a little rough to get through, but very cool once you arrive!

  • Make Fiddlehead House your home base for visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's only a few short miles to the entrance, yet a world away from the heavy tourist traffic. The home is charming and unique: it has a beautiful big kitchen to cook in, cozy living spaces, comfy beds, and the best shower on the Big Island--you can open two sides of it to the rainforest! Enjoy the flowers and birds calling while you relax under the hot water after a long day of hiking in the National Park. Thanks to April and Ron for hosting our stay.

  • This was a great find. Adorable cottage, lots of space, quick and helpful host responses and close proximity to the park. The unique shower that opened to partially outdoors was a peaceful and zen, one of my favorite parts. Overall one of the best air bnb experiences. Would highly recommend and come again if I ever make it back the Big Island again

  • How does on describe a gateway? A portal to another dimension, maybe? We saw it there gleaming through the bamboo fence. The rain was deafening and we were soaked to the bone. As we crossed the threshold we could feel the power pull us in and then SILENCE! We were gone. The pyramid had us now. The real question was, where would we exit?

  • Tucked away and perfect for those who wish to spend a day or so at volcano, exploring the national parks! The extra touches go a long way! Very detailed communication ! For those looking for a fun unique experience! Highly recommended!

    Ryan2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • This was such a magical place to stay near Volcanoes National Park. The private lot was bigger than we expected and the glass pyramid is surrounded by lush tropical plants. The bathrooms, shower, and sink are open air, but with a roof above them which captures rain water. It rained both nights we stayed, so it was cozy with the rain ok the glass at night and the ambiance it created. This is glamping at its best, you will spend a bit of time outside wether it’s cooking, showering or brushing your teeth. For those looking for a hotel room experience, you might be disappointed. We wish we stayed more than two nights and look forward to staying again in the future.

    Brian W.2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Vito was very responsive and his place is superb. You won’t find anything like this just anywhere. And it’s at the base of a volcano! Cmon.

    Michael2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, and what an experience!

    John2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Vittorios pyramid was easily one of the highlights of our honeymoon. Unfortunately we were not so lucky with the weather and the temperatures dropped quite a bit. However due to Vittorios communication upfront we were prepared and brought some warm clothes with us. The pyramid is a lot more spacious that the pictures made it seem and we had no problems to find a place for our stuff. As mentioned a few times here, the "bathroom" does not allow for much privacy but it is also not that bad. Showering outdoors was also super nice and the water gets hot pretty fast. Due to the fact that our stay was somewhat short and the weather didn't allow for a bbq we did not use the outdoor kitchen but it looked as it would accommodate to all your needs.

    Gesche2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Mahalo Vittorio - I would call you place clamping but in reality it is far more than that! While we just had one night to experience the spot you could easily stay a few days with the full (outdoor) bathroom and BBQ/kitchen area. The pyramid was sparkling clean and more spacious inside than we expected, even tho it looks petite from the outside compared to the lush rainforest like surrounding. Looking up at the moon and stars, hearing the rain patter on the windows, it all adds to the brilliant experience. Thanks again Vittorio!

    Tobias2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Hands down the most unique lodging we have ever had. Really cool glamping experience with amenities of a shower, wiFi, and kitchen basics. We spent two nights here and due to the inactivity of the volcano probably could have settled for one, but it was fun and memorable none the less. The place is really well appointed, charming, and very private. If you plan to cook most of your meals id recommend bringing your own cooler as the one provided is very small. Highly recommend if you want a glamping experience!

  • We stayed at this Airbnb for only 1 night. The space is exactly as described; super clean, everything that you need, and very comfortable. The best part was the effort that David put into sending details for what to do on the entire island, and the bulletin board with the maps of the park and tips. Wish we could have stayed longer and I would definitely stay here again.

A romantic studio retreat in the treetops of Volcano just five minutes to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Tree cottage includes a beautiful kitchen, spacious bathroom with indoor/outdoor shower, top-level lanai for viewing the unique local flora, and covered outdoor lounge area for enjoying morning coffee or evening wine with a loved one, rain or shine. Interior decor is mid-century tropical with floor-to-ceiling windows, pristine hardwood floors, and a hanging rattan chair for daydreaming.
As a recent guest said: "As soon as you pull up to the house you feel like you are entering a different world. We were even more blown away when we entered the tree house." Relax in the tranquility of the tree canopy of Volcano, Hawaii. Nestled in a park-like setting, surrounded by ohi'a and hapu'u trees native to this unique part of the world and other tropical plants, this treehouse provides all the creature comforts. At 300 sq. feet, this sweet retreat has been custom-designed and adorned by the host/owner providing a more personal experience for the guests. Amenities such as an easy to access entrance, beautiful decor, a well-appointed kitchen, consistent hot water, electricity, fluffy towels, ceiling fan, wifi, and comfy queen-sized bed make a luxurious take on the treehouse experience we all dream of experiencing. Enjoy the ground-floor covered outdoor lounge area in rain or shine while looking onto the garden area while relaxing on acacia wood furniture, with battery-operated lanterns and string lights for an relaxing setting. Coffee, tea, and oatmeal are also provided for light breakfast. Basics cooking necessities such as utensils, olive oil cooking spray, salt and pepper are supplied. For local climate info and tips for preparing see the bottom of this description. The living area has glass french doors that welcome you in to the cottage. Once inside you'll be inspired by the beautiful pitched pine ceiling, large windows and 8 feet tall sliding glass doors providing a perfect vantage into the trees. At this height you can see the colorful birds flitting from tree to tree and the clouds rolling in from the coast. The living area is separated from the kitchen and bathroom, so each room is its own. The kitchen has hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry and quartz counter tops. It comes complete with a four-burner gas stove, small fridge, full-sized sink, coffee maker, and toaster oven. The bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with pebble floor and a rain shower head for an incredible experience. The big windows, flower-shaped vessel sink, quartz counter tops, tiled floor, and fluffy bath linens provided give the bathroom the feeling of a beautiful, relaxing spa. The lush outdoor tropical garden evokes a feeling of privacy, peace, tranquility, and a change of pace from everyday life. House water is potable and chemical-free. Piped in from the outdoor rain catchment system, the water is purified with a UV system and filtered. The tree cottage was built by a local contractor, engaging local businesses for the materials. Shannon's hands-on management (even cleaning between guests!) and pride in ownership for the property results in a tree cottage guests can feel comfortable staying in. Climate info and tips for preparing: Even though you are in Hawaii, being on the side of the volcano at a higher elevation and in the rainforest means it gets cooler at night and the climate is changeable. It is advisable to wear layers and prepare for rain with water resistant outerwear for your outdoor adventures. Consider bringing warm comfortable clothes to lounge in or outside the tree cottage. Fleece is always a good cozy option here.
True to the Hawaiian translation of the street name, meaning 'beautiful forest', the property is surrounded by rainforest jungle on all sides with a driveway from the street. The tree cottage is set back about 100 feet off the street for extra privacy. Just two miles (four minute drive) from the infamous Volcanoes National Park and one mile away from the quaint and charming Volcano Village. This artistic enclave has an art center, gallery, gardens, shops, restaurants, lodges, gas station, and a nature reserve.
  • This place is a gem. Amazing location and super comfy + beautiful

    Lauren2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse itself is beautiful. We went to the Hilo farmers market before staying & had plenty to fresh fruit to cut into our provided oatmeal each morning - Shannon was kind enough to provide gluten free oatmeal & bars since my boyfriend has Celiac's - thank you so much!!! The space is beautiful. We were undisturbed. It's so close to Volcano National Park & this little artsy Cafe (it's in Shannon's guide) that had gluten free & vegan options that we loved. Definitely recommend.

  • The tree house was absolutely beautiful and in a lovely peaceful spot about 10mins from the national park. Shannon was a brilliant host - very quick to answer our questions and there were lots of thoughtful touches around the treehouse. Local recommendations were all brilliant - we particularly liked the Ohelo cafe and lava rocks cafe.

    Alexandra2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The dream woodland fairy aesthetic, complete with pheasant visitors :) It's very open, so make sure to bring layers - but the bed's plenty warm. Shannon gave us tons of tips on local spots, and communicated often to make sure we were having a good experience.

    Rachel2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon’s treehouse was absolutely perfect in all aspects. The space itself was immaculate, and decorated so nicely. All the appliances were brand new, and everything had that extra touch so you could tell so much love went into creating it. It is a scant 5 mins to Volcano National Park and less than that to one of our favorite Thai places ever! I cannot wait to stay at the romantic treehouse again.

    Pia2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon was very helpful when asked for restaurant suggestions. The Treehouse is really fabulous & allows you to unwind, with no distractions (TV). Great romantic get away for a couple. The special touches, the outsided relaxation area we did not get to use but it is just so inviting (next time). Thank you to Shannon for a great stay her place is spotless and comfortable!!

    Debbie2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible space - Shannon’s treehouse does not disappoint. Extremely clean and well designed. This was one of the nicest places we stayed on the big island. Very close to the national park and the small town with restaurants.

    Ben2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Very pretty totally clean little house with a lot of attention to detail. 5 minutes by car to Volcano & restaurants! The bed is quite small for 2 people.

  • We had a great stay at Brenda’s place! The cabin was very cozy and extremely well-located for spending a day in Volcanoes National Park. Highly recommend!

    Sarah2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent place. Brenda was great about providing directions before and this is very conveniently located next to Volcano National Park. The place was very clean and well laid out. Enjoyed it a lot.

    Pasha2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • The space is quiet, clean, and comfortable. The private hot tub is a great place to relax in the somewhat chilly rainforest area.

    Trina2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • As soon as we drove up to Brenda's home, we loved the feel of staying in the rainforest. There were tropical trees, plants and bamboo leading into the home. Brenda's home was ideally located about 10 mins fromVolcano National Park. So we made several trips into the park. Brenda's home was sparkling clean and decorated so nicely with flowers. There were ample supplies of nice clean soft towels and bathrobes which we used for the wonderful hot tub on the premises. The hot tub was wonderful after our long days of walking and sightseeing!! The kitchen was stocked with all the basics utensils and cookware that we needed. The best compliment I can give an airbnb rental is that we felt very much at home. And we most certainly did at Brenda's bamboo cottage. Thank you for your hospitality. We would recommend this rental to anyone looking to stay near Volcano National Park in Hawaii.

    Janet2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • A really great space and location for visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

    Sharon2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Brenda's place was great!!! About 15 minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park!! It was great to have a full kitchen to make ourselves dinner after a long day of hiking and the hot tub was a great feature as well. We really enjoyed sitting in the hot tub while it was raining!

  • Super clean. Very quiet. Really sweet cat who loves strangers.

  • Accommodation is well equipped with microwave, toaster oven and a large fridge - bathroom is huge.... We were glad the room was a good size for all our luggage and even happier that there was a lanai with a table and a couple of chairs - we just wished the weather would have been better to use it. Location to Volcano National Park is great and with the space being so clean we'd highly recommend a stay here

    Kathleen2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Loved our two night stay at The House in the Clouds!!! Perfect location to enjoy the park. Enjoyed three of Kristin’s dining recommendations! Our suite was spotless and cozy! The homemade fudge was a delicious treat!!! We enjoyed the comfortable bed and the wonderful shower. A cozy comforter and electric stove were perfect for the cooler evenings!

    Barbara2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Nice room. Great location close to the National Park.

    Kristi2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The house is really nice and Kristin was very attentive (even though we didn't meet in person). It is close to the park, we drove to the park every day we stayed and we got there really fast. We really recommend the place :)

    Gabriela2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Kristin’s place was SUCH a delightful PEACEFUL retreat from the hustle and bustle of going around and touring everything. It has amazing privacy and some really wonderful amenities that most places don’t offer. If you’re going to be around Volcano and you’re not sure if you should stay here, this is your sign—DO IT! I don’t believe you’ll regret it. :-)

    Noelle2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Kristen’s apartment is adorable and oh so cozy. Definitely it is better to find the place during the day, but it is perfectly located to the park. You should expect a wet bath, but it is huge and tiled with a bench and rather elegant. Cleverly, the sink does double for kitchen and bathroom, and we loved the fudge, bagels, and hot chocolate… Perfect for after hiking on a rainy Hawai’i winter day..which is not really winter, but not 80 degrees either. Thank you Kristin!

    Elliot2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Kristin's place. The location is perfect if you're planning on visiting Volcano National Park and the view of the rainforest from the bedroom was awesome. The homemade fudge was delicious. We wish we were able to stay longer!

Built at tree level, our loft greets you with rainforest views and natural light pouring through large windows throughout the newly built custom home with modern comforts.
NATIONAL PARK UPDATE: The Main Entrance of the National Park (located 5 minutes from our home) is officially OPEN. With the massively increased Crater views due to the past eruption, this is a very exciting time to visit the National Park. Enjoy the modern comforts of home in the rainforest, on the edge of the Volcano National Park and just 5 minutes from the Volcano Village. Set on a quiet 1/2 acre backing up to the Forest Reserve, in the back of a very quiet neighborhood, this is perfect place to relax amongst the trees and listen to birds chirp. Relax in front of our cozy fireplace, and enjoy 25 foot high wooden beam ceilings, whitewashed floors, an open floor plan, and a 10ft sliding glass door that leads to our huge tree-level deck, perfect for sipping your coffee or reading a book. Sleep cozy in a 3rd floor loft bedroom in a king size bed looking out on the Rainforest. Cook a gourmet meal with local ingredients in a full modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Blender, toaster, and all baking dishes are also provided. We also have a brand new washer and dryer for your use as well. Laundry soap is provided for your convenience. The shower is equipped with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Feel free to sit at the desk and write a postcard to a loved one or read a good book about the Kilauea Volcano. We have provided Volcano Books for your use. The post office is in Volcano Village.
For Dining I would suggest: For dinner I like all the spots in Volcano Village but for something fancy Kilauea lodge is delicious (you'll need reservations). When you get to the house you'll see a welcome letter on the kitchen table with all my other dinning recommendations as well more daily adventures.
  • Incredibly clean, beautiful house and incredible location. I will definitely be coming back here! Thanks so much!!

  • This loft is an absolute perfect home-base for exploring Volcanoes National Park. It’s just minutes from the park which allows for an easy morning to beat the crowds. The cleanliness, design, and function of the space is spot on. I loved the open/loft concept, the shower that feels like you’re outdoors, and the covered deck for reading and relaxing. This place is just as described and pictured. Highly recommend!

  • Lisa's getaway is an absolutely beautiful, relaxing and airy space in the middle of the jungle. We stayed here for 2 days during our time on Big Island and it was my favorite space to spend time in. The decor is simple and stylish which really lends itself to the open layout of the house. The porch however was my favorite. Waking up and sitting out there to listen to birds with coffee in the morning was so relaxing and really immersed you in where you were. This space is very lovely and you can tell that the owners love coming there themselves and want you to feel the same. Lisa also had fabulous communication and really great recommendations for our time there. I would highly recommend this house in the jungle and hope it continues to be available for future visits to the Big Island.

    Natalie2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa's home was the perfect home base for our trip to explore Volcano National Park. The space is beautiful and very peaceful. It is minutes from the park, and about 20-30 minute drive to the town of Hilo. There are a number of lovely touches that made the stay extra special including the cozy fireplace and awesome record collection. Thank you Lisa!!!

    David2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great cottage with everything. very quiet! It's a pity that the public areas are a bit dirty (dust) and the floor is quite noticeable to see dust and hair. Because the windows have no curtains, they will be awakened by the sun in the morning.

    Kyle2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa's place was absolutely wonderful and we would highly recommend it! It was in a fantastic location - very close to Volcano National Park and the town's shops and restaurants - and yet it felt incredibly serene and peaceful. The open windows offered great views of the rainforest outside, the fireplace made it super cozy, and it had everything we needed to feel right at home. Lisa was a fantastic host - offering detailed suggestions, making our check-in super easy, and responding to questions very quickly. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home!!!

    Lauren2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa’s loft house was amazing. As a host, she was extremely communicative, provided clear instructions and left us with plenty of local recommendations. The house is wonderfully quaint, tucked into luscious rain forest and incredibly quietly at night. The space has everything you could need for your stay and is perfect for a romantic getaway.

    Cole2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • our stay at Lisa's Volcano loft was very cozy, it get's cool in February, and the fire stove was very helpful, with very clear instructions, we only stayed 2 nights but it was a great experience to see what that side of the island was like, super quiet, nice deck and lounging areas, very comfy loft bed, lots of space for a couple.

Enjoy back-to-nature, goddess girl sanctuary at a discount while putting helping hands to good use! No experience necessary, just positive energy 1.5 - 2 hours/day providing TLC to unique land & structures. Goddess Pele is a reason folks visit this amazing island, along with black, white & green sand beaches & geologically interesting things to see. Come savor a magical, unconventional experience! :)
"What a delight that within hours after getting off the 5 plus hours flight I was able to be out in the yard pulling up wild raspberries. Yes my earthly self loved that...Warmth, saltwater, beautiful views--life is good!! What a nice change from the impersonal, sterile comforts of most hotel rooms." Marion writer, filmmaker Rest, Relax, Rejuvenate. Take time to nourish yourself in the rhythms of Nature and just BE. Unplug from the matrix and share intimate sacred time/space in goddess girl energy while helping to support this creative womb of tropical rainforest kept intentionally mostly wild rather than conquered & manicured...schedule permitting. Looking forward to connecting & nurturing this precious planet together! :) (Host also shares time with folks in private creative/magical/healing intensives both on & off site; inquire.) Hand-built-with-love cabins/rooms plus a shared common kitchen, library/art/music room, and transitioning-towards-passive-solar indoor/outdoor bathrooms in a quiet, laid-back, sacred, rainforest jungle atmosphere with meditation-trails-in-progress and an expanding banana tree forest (help yourself!). We’re focussed on becoming more & more on eco-friendly/sustainable, while lowering our human impact in the world. If you're looking to experience a different, more 'unplugged' way of living where you collaborate with nature/the weather (while still having access to refrigeration, stovetop cooking, wifi, electric lights), then this is the place for you! :) (If however, you're looking for a conventional home or accommodations with manicured lawns where the weather always does what we humans want it to do, then this likely isn’t it!) Things at this unconventional, wild-nature home seem to be moving towards another era of welcoming longer-term stays & studies, so if sharing sacred time/space together for longer than a vacation is calling, whenever possible I’m happy to co-create weekly or monthly arrangements. I also, at times, host folks for private creative/magical/healing intensives, both on & off site along with arranging 1 - 2 hour/day supportive get-togethers when interested folks are elsewhere. However our paths are meant to meet, the planet needs you! The time for focusing on personal life goals & evolution is now. :)
Since we consider our home sacred, we do not feature typical things like beds in photos. All spaces here are just simple, country-quirky, built-with-love cabins or rooms and each sleep space comes with bed(s), bedding, extra blankets, fresh flowers, writing table & chair(s), large windows + its own individual perks & quirks (such as passive solar walls or outside deck, loft bed or floor-to-ceiling bookshelf). Illustrated in images here is the FEEL of our environment based on what kind of people have spent time of one type or another resonating well here (with a few tip o’ the hat acknowledgements of volcano goddess Pele, + favorite places like nearby hiking and black sand beaches we frequent). If reading this listing's description and looking at these images gives you a good vibe (like 'these seem like the kinds of people & kind of experiences I might enjoy, or grow from/transform in...') then this is very likely the kind of place for you! :) (NOTE: this island is an active volcano, but so far we aren’t anywhere near where the current eruptions are &, as long as tradewinds blow south, our air quality remains just fine.)
  • Its a nice place in the middle of the Rainforest. Very good for the adventurous person who wants to get a bit involved on the island. The place is charming and perfect to relax. Definately recommend to try the experience.

    Vincent2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Wish you appreciate this serenity and peacefulness of mind/body after every working project here in the middle of the jungle, next to the volcano goddess. Super close to volcano national park for sunrise/sunset/star gazing. A little rush if you arrange sightseeing and working project on the same day. Unforgettable!

  • My stay at Cristina’s sanctuary was extraordinary. The property is wild jungle beautiful. The cabin I stayed in was comfortable and nurturing, as was the common space, which includes an art, music, library room. Seeing as I love cooking, having a full kitchen was very welcoming too. I stayed as a partial work trade and found the work on the property invigorating and easy to fit into my schedule of activities on the Island. A fantastic choice if you want to be away in the jungle. Only 10+ minutes to Volcanoes National Park and the lovely village of Volcano too. I look forward to my next stay here.

    Katie2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place is special, in every way. It is retreat where you can connect with nature and yourself too. Cristina is a wonderful host and I enjoyed my stay very much. If you sign up for the partial work/stay be prepared to commit to that. I think some little physical work can be good part of the healing process. It worked for me and others too. Cristina`s property is a magical land with flowers, plants, birds, bananas and fairies. I`m very glad I discovered this paradise and had an opportunity to enjoy it.

    Michael Milos2019-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • The place is really magical, the energies are incredible, you feel really good. The nature that surrounds us and the kindness and hospitality of Cristina make this place perfect for a return to oneself. Thank you again for all the beautiful things that I experienced in these places

  • if you wish to enter deeply into yourself, it is a marvelous place, wild (letting go with your existential fears), simple and rustic place, independent, out of human time, a very beautiful experience of life, of consciousness whoever you are, where you are, with a weather that can be lived as a mirror with human emotions, wherever they come from. very nice place of reconnection !! thank you to Cristina for her perseverance in living her dream, sharing it and providing her benevolent and structured support

Volcano kahaualea cottage, a perfect place to explore the East Side of the Big Island. Is a newly renovated cottage built in 1982 which was built as a newlyweds first home It is a perfect example of a all wood art home built from repurposed woods. We have renovated very carefully maintaining it original charm. However, we have upgraded with many contemporary designs. It has beautiful wood walls. Large walk in shower, stacked stone wall with electric fireplace and flat screen Tv.
This cottage is located on a very private forested 3 acres. A honeymoon delight. A centralized location to explore the whole east side and to explore the now open Hawaii Volcano National Park. Brand new bathroom, brand new kitchen. Come and enjoy! It is located on 3 square acreas of rainforest. 4.5 miles from the volcano National Park. Extremely private. Road is gravel for 3/10 of a mile but we have a Prius and have no problems.
    Very secluded and nice neighborhood
  • Wow! what a stunning place this is, beautifully crafted place by the owners that makes it a truly unique space and experience. All topped off by the surrounding rainforest. Absolutely stunning. Its very helpful to have all the amenities including a full kitchen (with the vastness of the big island, you'll be cooking more than going out for dinner, trust me!) and washer and dryer was a big help. The shower is very spacious and has nice natural finishes. Location is quite good for heading to either side of the island which is an advantage when everything is so far away. Thanks Brenda for the hospitality

    Steven2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is beautiful with two excellent covered porches. The rain (not too much and only at night!) sounded lovely on the metal roof. The road is bumpy. Just drive slowly and it is fine. Totally worth a few minutes for the wonderful retreat you get from everything- but the WiFi works well! Wonderful sanctuary and a great base for exploring Volcanoes NP.

  • Brenda‘s cottage is an amazing place if you want some time to relax and chill in the middle of the rainforest! It‘s just lovely. You can do anything to hang out: Cook in the nice and modern kitchen, use the smart TV (AirPlay-capable yay!), fast Wifi or just listen to the rain, of which there is a lot (a lot!). But don’t worry, just outside Vulcano the rain suddenly stops (usually). So just do a day tour and explore the island.

  • From even prior to arrival, Alice has been the best host and excellent communicator! She gave us recommendations on our way over from Kona, including green sand beach, punaluu beach and bakery and hiking Volcanoes National park. Her place was conveniently located in HNP so we were able to get out of the cold and rain after our hike! We loved the Thai restaurant Thai Thai just down the road and falling asleep to sounds of the rainforest. This place is equipped with everything you may need!! Definitely would love to come back to stay!

    Emily2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Alice’s cottage - super cozy and beautifully decorated, very comfortable bed, 5 minutes from the volcano national park, she left snacks and wine for sale and there were lots of condiments as well as everything you’d need for cooking. Make sure to do a grocery shop before making your way to Volcano and pick up drinking water!! Check in instructions were clear and Alice leaves you super equipped with rain coats, umbrellas, a lunch bag etc etc so many extras to help you enjoy your stay. You absolutely must stay here if you’re looking for something close to Volcano!!

  • A cozy cottage nestled in the true rain forest of the Big Island. Between the songbirds in the morning and the warm little gas fireplace heater, we had a difficult time leaving even though adventure awaited us right down the road. Ideal for kids, as there is a special set of little beds in a loft, this home is perfect for the family getaway.

    Randle2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely experience. This place is quite the gem and situated so close to the Volcanoes National Park and General Store. Lovely amenities, great kitchen, lovely lounge and really comfy bed. Although we're a couple, this place also has a great loft for a couple of kids. We went to sleep with lovely rainforest sounds and woke up to native bird songs. So many AirBnB places we've stayed in on the mainland US have been a major disappointment due to fake photos and over-hyped descriptions. Linda's place is exactly as described and beautifully and thoughtfully appointed. We had busy days exploring the Park but was lovely to get back to place that felt like home. We would happily come back. Loved it!

    Lisa2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Spent a very quiet night in the apartment above Linda’s. Great location for an early start into Volcano park!

  • This place is amazing. The architecture is great. I really enjoyed our stay here and the hot tub was 🔥. The master bedroom mattress was literally the most comfortable thing, and felt like it was sleeping on a cloud. The location was perfect! It rained and stormed so bad the last 2 days, we stayed at the house because we couldn't hike. The yard has an abundance of tropical trees - banana, lime, red ginger, ECT...so close to resteraunts and the park. This place is amazing; would stay in this area again.

Hale 'Alalā is named after the highly endangered hawaiian crow being reintroduced to the forests around Volcano. Only 20 of these birds exist in the wild. The cottage is situated among the rainforest and barely visible from the road, making this a private retreat that's just a 5 minute drive (3.3 miles) to the entrance gate of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and just across the highway from Volcano Village, known for its resident artists, art studios, and several restaurants.
This cozy cottage has many thoughtful touches such as Bluetooth speaker clocks with USB charging ports for your electronics, an electric fireplace in both the living room and bedroom, and a kitchen with all the utensils and appliances you should need for quick meals. The bedroom has a queen sized bed and the living room has a queen sized sofa bed. There is also a loft in the house that is accessed by a wooden ladder. If you are traveling with a young child or children, please be sure that you will be able to control access to the ladder and loft for their safety.
Volcano residents cherish their peace and quiet, you'll mostly hear only birds while here. Please respect the neighbors by keeping noise to a minimum during your stay. The days are nice and cool this far up the mountain and nights can get chilly, so bring a jacket. Volcano Village is just across the highway should you want to grab a bite to eat or shop for something locally made to remind you of your trip.
  • Obsessed with this little cottage!! Can’t wait to stay again. It was quite cold out when we arrived (50s and rainy) and the little space heater and fireplace really warmed us up.

    Brianna2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful cottage at Volcano. The cottage had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. There was a carport to keep the car dry during rainy weather, check in was very simple. The space itself was so quaint and comfortable. There was heating available in the main room, bathroom, and bedroom. The loft was adorable! They even had two old arcade games -upstairs in the loft. A great stay!

  • I stayed with my family at Hale Alala for one night while we were exploring the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is very close to the national park and is located in the lush green rainforest. It is extremely clean and well-maintained and the decor is exquisite. I wish we had more time to spend at this cute and cozy cottage. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a visit to Volcano, just make sure you get in during the day because it can be hard to find in the dark.

One year and five days after my initial visit I returned to this wonderful little home, and it was every bit as good, no, better, than my first time. Hale Manu (Hawaiian for " Bird House"), is a newly completed A-frame home decorated as a cozy nest for just the two of you! Located on a dead-end street in Volcano Village, this house offers you privacy, quiet and yet close proximity to Volcanoes National Park which is only 6 minutes away.
Because we were taken with how much the cottage looks like a birdhouse from the outside, we have decorated completely in a bird theme, including our feathery friends in the chandelier which was handmade in Estonia. Of course, all birdcages have newspaper on the bottom so check out the flooring in the living room. Read the headlines from all of the different newspapers and you'll even find the local Hilo Tribune reporting on an eruption at our neighbor, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park!
We are a two block long street, in the artsy village of Volcano, HI. While it is very private and quiet, you are only 2 minutes from the village and 6 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park, an ideal location.
  • Eileen has an incredible place. We loved our stay. It was cold when we arrived but Eileen provided space heaters that quickly heated the space. The bird motif was fun and whimsical. Location was perfect for visiting Volcano and the back back patio was lovely.

  • Our 2 nights at The Bird House (Hale Manu) were our best (of 8 nights) on the island of Hawaii. We can't recommend this cottage - and its wonderful host, Eileen - enough. The cottage is totally and completely charming and clever (all of the decor is bird themed), immaculately clean, and every little detail has been thought through. We were so bummed to leave! Eileen was quick with replies, provided helpful information and recommendations on where to eat, and she walked us through how to find the electrical panel when we accidentally tripped a breaker. Best of all, The Bird House is a great home base for exploring Volcanoes National Park, just a few minutes from the Park's entrance.

  • Beautiful yard and a very quiet area. Great place to relax.

    Katsiaryna2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautifully decorated place surrounded by lush green surroundings. The unit was 1 of 2 on site. It is located a bit down an unpaved road, so at first we weren't sure we headed the right way, but the host made sure the place is easily spotted at night. The on site host, Julia, was sweet and spent some time to make sure the fire place started to keep our room nice and cozy. We only stayed one night, but was able to take advantage of the kitchenette with snacks and Kona coffee before heading out to Volcano National Park. There's also a hot plate provided if you plan on staying longer. Definitely would have loved to have a couple more nights at this lovely place.

    Timothy2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Maria’s place was very nice. Super spaciest. Bathroom and kitchen area could use with some better cleaning. There was old coffee grinds still in the coffee maker :/

Stargaze through the glass roof from the bubbling hot tub on the second-story lanai and admire Hawaii's beautiful rainforest. Polished stone walls, woven bamboo walls, and soothing blue decor combine with glossy house plants to create a calm haven.
The house sits on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano just 4 miles away from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
  • We enjoyed our stay in these comfortable and peaceful surroundings. We were only a party of 2 but this home would accommodate 10 as the hosts states The location was great for the places we wanted to see. Communication with Tim was easy. Any questions were quickly answered.

    Karyl2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Overall would recommend the facility and host. Great place as a base for exploring the Volcano National park and Hilo coast. Just know that there is a reason that they call it rainforest - It rains at night and there is a level of dampness in the morning for those early risers. We did not try out the Hot Tub so we can not comment on it but it did seem to be in an ideal position to enjoy the surroundings.

A few hours from Kona, so we stayed the night there and left comfortably in the morning to arrive by sunset, with lots of great stops on the way. The drive to Hilo airport was less than an hour if you come from that direction. The house is in an unexpectedly residential area in the middle of the volcano park. Though there are houses nearby, this house feels like its isolated in the jungle. There are trees and other plants overflowing onto the patio and along the windows (sitting in the jacuzzi in the covered patio surrounded by nature was an unforgettable experience). Each bit of decor was thoughtful, unique, and elegant. Everything was perfectly clean and tidy. Despite all the quirky decor, it didn't feel cluttered. I was amazed at how well the kitchen was stocked. I had my favorite tea, enough kitchenware to cook 2 meals, and filled up on filtered water. At night, the sound of mellow animals was soothing and a cool reminder that we were in such an off-the-grid location. The board games and TV were available for some relaxation time. On our day of check out, we were able to drive around the crater, come back to freshen up, then explore plenty more before our flight out of Hilo. This place was superb! My only suggestions: load anything you need (maps, etc) before arriving - the wifi is weak (and my cellular data didn't work) but its part of the experience. Stock up on groceries before, too! Volcano village is the nearest food, with limited hours.

  • My wife and I returned to the big island for our 25th anniversary, and we wanted it to be special. We searched hundreds of rentals on AirBnB and others to find the right place. I cannot express how perfect this stay was for us. Tim and Jenn have created a space where you truly feel the aloha 'aina spirit of Hawaii. The house is easily big enough to accommodate a large family or multiple couples, yet also felt very cozy and comfortable for just us. Whenever we thought of something we didn't have or needed, they were always a step ahead. The property is private and gorgeously nestled in its very own little rainforest. A short drive gets you to Hilo, waterfalls, beaches (including black beaches) and Volcano National Park. If we return to the big island in the future, we definitely would stay at this property again. Absolutely worth it. Bryson & Renee

  • The place was perfect for our large group - we had everything we needed and the house was spotless! It was a convenient location between the National Park and Hilo as well. I would definitely stay here again if we ever go back to Hawaii.

    Genevieve2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent, very clean, exactly as depicted in photos. Great place to stay close to the Volcano National Park with everything you would need. We hope to be be back soon.

  • Tim’s place was the perfect getaway for our family! We live in Kona on the big Island and getting time in volcano was very special for us. It was cozy and made us feel very warm and welcomed.

    Judith2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second years staying at Tim’s wonderful rainforest hale. The house is spacious and cozy with thoughtful touches that make it feel like home. Tim has done an amazing job providing the staples and amenities for his guests. Accessible to nearby Volcano Village and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Highly recommend!!

  • We were so blown away by this little Hidden gem in the jungle! Wow! Absolutely everything we needed, and the hot tub was SO great! We were greeted by Kalij pheasants a couple days, enjoyed cool rain and warm sun, beautiful surroundings, and so much peace and quiet. We’ll definitely come back again and have already shared the link with friends who are excited to come explore. If you’re spending any time at Volcanoes NP, you should definitely stay here.

  • Great quiet place to stay

    Joseph2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • This Airbnb exceeded all of our expectations. The space is charming in so many ways. It’s nestled in a forest setting and feels very private. The hot tub is fabulous! We spent three days exploring Volcanoes National Park and the main entrance is only 10 minutes from Brenda’s place. This meant that we could arrive in good time and we always got a parking space. The ranger-led and self-guided hikes were really memorable. We loved coming back here at the end of the day.

    Kathy2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is amazing! If you have the opportunity to stay here, DO IT. It is the perfect romantic getaway. The hot tub in the rainforest is incredible and so nice after hiking in the park. I also loved the shower that opens onto the deck and the robes provided by the host. Outstanding place and we will definitely be back!

    Suzanne2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Such a lovely cottage. Completely immersed in the forest - a perfect getaway. Modern amenities with a great outside hot tub. Could not have asked for more. Well worth the price!

    Jeremy2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is the absolute sweetest spot. The cottage was the perfect home base to explore Volcano National park and the hot tub at the end of a long day hiking was the best. Do take the advice to bring some warm clothes! Mornings are chilly.

    Emma2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful cabin in a very tropical forest. though other homes were close by, it was very private and lovely. Hot tub was a great plus after coming from Kona which was so much warmer.

Beautiful home in the rainforest, only 5 miles from the Hawaii National Park and volcano ! This is a three bedroom house with only one single female living here, so it’s a very spacious, peaceful and quiet home 🖤 you are welcome to use the kitchen, dining room, living room , bathroom and lanai at any time ! On a beautiful property 🖤
You are welcome to all the common spaces in my house and on my property ! This includes bathrooms, kitchen-dining-living room area, large lanai (porch) and big yard !
Less than five miles from Volcano Village and the Hawaii National Park and all its beauty !
  • Very enjoyable stay. Rural yet not too far out of the way. Heads up that cellular service is spotty and no WiFi on site, but close to national parks.

    Trevor2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Everyhing was great.

    Mihály2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This was a very neat base from which to explore the national park. My favorite thing about our stay was learning from Jessica and her visiting grandma about life where they live. It was interesting to see the rainwater harvesting system that supplies the house. Jessica was generous with her space and pantry. Thank you!

    Kimberly2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful secluded place to stay in Volcano. Jessica is a lovely person and was very flexible with check-in. We loved her house surrounded by the forest, and it was a short drive from town so we never felt far away from anything. The bed and bedroom were comfortable and spacious enough to spread out. I will likely stay there again.

  • Very nice place. Quite and close to the national park.

  • About 5 miles from the national park but an easy drive. A secluded and beautiful area.

  • Great value and location near Volcanoe National Park!

    Kevin2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • Very, very cozy house with a genuine atmosphere. Old house but with modern amenities and definitely an experience. To wake up with panorama windows showing the forest outside, with all the birds of course singing, was surely memorable. Jessica's desperately cuddly cat Tiger will also be hard to forget :)

Laukapu Forest Cottage (LFC) is a spacious studio, vacation-rental cottage, a handcrafted "Work of Heart". LFC has a well-equipped kitchen and a private bathroom, with a tiled shower. Watch digital-cable TV or connect to the smart TV, make local calls on the phone, and enjoy high-speed Wi-Fi. The entry porch is approached from the 70-foot-/21-meter-long covered “Walkway of the 1,000 Peaces". LFC was designed and built for two adult guests and not for any additional adults or children.
LFC is very private, with the entry porch at the back of the structure, with a covered walkway leading up to that. The entry porch is at the back side of the cottage and is just one step above the forest floor, so, guests can step out under the forest canopy to watch birds or just look at the upland rain forest that surrounds the cottage.
LFC is in a quiet corner of the village, and the residents enjoy the peace and quiet; so do our guests! We are in the upland rain forest and most houses were carefully sited so as to avoid taking out more trees than necessary.
  • The studio was perfect for what we were looking for in Volcano. Incredibly close to the park. Nice and secluded, quiet and clean. The amenities were great for two people. It was colder than we had expected but the heated electric blankets and the space heater were perfect. Proximity to the farmer’s market on Sunday made for a wonderful breakfast in one day and Kathryn’s suggestion. To have breakfast at the Rim restaurant overlooking the crater was a great start to our time in Volcano.

    Liz2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fabulous stay at Kathryn's Laukapu Forest Cottage. It is located in close proximity to "downtown" Volcano. The cottage itself is a beautifully built structure set in a temperate rainforest. A lovely covered walk leads one to the cottage and will shelter you and your belongings from the elements, as rain is frequent in this part of the island. The cottage is conveniently furnished, being remarkably well equipped and comfortable for two. While small, the kitchen contains good appliances and the accouterments necessary should meal preparation be in your plans. The living area is well designed and crafted. The photographs here on AirBNB show a beautiful place, but still the online pictures of the cottage don't fully portray the quality and beauty of this unit. It is truly stunning. The bathroom is also relatively small but it has everything one needs and is very well put together. The bathroom and the rest of the cottage are immaculately clean. The cottage is tastefully decorated, using art from local artists and artisans. Kathryn is a gracious and friendly host. She is a near lifelong resident of Hawaii, who loves her home state and Volcano, in particular. She is able to provide expert advice on visiting the National Park. She also gave us good advice on local restaurants. Kathryn is eager to make you comfortably at home in the cottage, all the while respecting the privacy of her guests. We highly recommend Laukapu Forest Cottage.

    Lisa2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Kathryn is an amazing host. Her home is hand crafted (truly) and leaves you with a sense of comfort and privacy all within the Hawaiian rain forest. Kathryn ensures you are as familiar as can be with the island and Volcano Nat'l Park right up to the moment you arrive. The home itself is cozy, warm, private and to quote my girlfriend, "The most romantic place I've ever stayed in!". We will be back!!

    Larry2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Kathryn’s place. Would definitely recommend!

  • A slice of paradise! Enjoyed the beautifully crafted cottage and the close proximity to Volcano Park.

I would definitely recommend staying here for a night or two if you’re gonna be hiking in Volcano National Park. It’s just the perfect place to relax.

  • Such a beautiful escape - every detail perfectly thought out. My husband and I had a magical time at this lovely home! Jeff and Julie were so detail oriented, providing such great local recommendations and an extremely clean home. We loved the fire and tub especially after long days of hiking around Volcano National Park. We hope to return the next time we are on the Big Island!

  • Such a great place for a relaxing vacation. Was near the national volcano park which is a must see! It was so relaxing to soak in the hot tub and watch the fire place with the trees moving behind it. I would definitely stay again for a relaxing vacation. I recommend stopping by a grocery store on the way in. The town of volcano has few food options.

  • We had a wonderful time at this well appointed, beautifully designed architectural gem. The location is convenient to Volcano National Park, market and a few restaurants. We loved the hot tub and firepit and really enjoyed unplugging for a couple days at the start of our big island vacation. It did the trick to get us into "vacation mode" before we explored the rest of the island. Communication was quick and easy. The listing and house handbook offer plenty of info about how to use everything in the home and around town. Thanks for a great stay!

    Laura2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Jeff’s place was lovely. We just stayed for a night, but the check-in and check-our process was super seamless, and the space was so nice. Very secluded and clean. Also the hot tub was awesome.

  • Stay here. Off the beaten path. In the woods but close to life. Spa. Great for solo adventure, drink and a good book. I’m sure this is ideal for couples (too small for kids). Thanks for the cozy home, Mahalo!

  • We were so impressed with Jeff’s house. It was comfortable, convenient, not to mention exquisitely designed. Every detail was well thought out, and we wish we had the time to stay more than one night. We even saw a rare Hawaiian hawk from the lanai. We will definitely be back!

Quiet, secluded, unique, and cozy bamboo treehouse on the Big Island is just minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Beautiful features, inside and out. Test out treehouse living and bamboo beauty, but with loads of extras. This is the only true bamboo tree house on the islands - few places could compare for both structural beauty and lanai views.
This quiet, secluded, treehouse is just a few miles from the National Park entrance. Located on the Big Island with beautiful features, inside and out. Our tree house is the only true bamboo tree house on the Islands. It is fully constructed with bamboo imported from Vietnam, fully code compliant with stringent earthquake and hurricane engineering, and not just accents for beautification but fully structural. This bamboo is stronger than any conventional lumber, with its round shape and ability to bend without breaking makes this bamboo perfect for building. There are few people that have the skill of working with bamboo, where every piece is customized to fit with the next piece because every piece is unique in size, shape, and bend. The house is perched up in the clouds 14feet. It has a spacious living area and a setting that is extremely secluded in the jungle for a couple who enjoys their privacy, This unit is meant for two with a queen-size bed that is comfy and cozy for any romantic couple wanting a getaway. We provide a great mattress for your perfect and tranquil night sleep, and soft silky sheets that will make you not want to get out of bed in the morning. Unlike other tree houses in the area, we can hook to power because we are fully code compliant. This allows us to offer conveniences like WI-FI, dehumidifying, heating, a refrigerator, and a smart TV with Netflix and Disney Plus for our guests to use, as well as for general safety. Enjoy some coffee or hot chocolate on the lanai and admire one of the most serene views of the amazing picturesque greenery of the ohia trees, huge ferns, tea leaves, banana trees, liko lehua, and beautiful flowers, while listening to the native birds Apapane singing, coqui frogs, and other wildlife. There are no predators on the island so rest easy knowing the wildlife are safe, and will not hurt you. We provide a book with all the amenities about the house and with things to do in the area to make your stay easy, relaxing, and enjoyable. We are also always close by for anything you may need. Enjoy the best lanai anywhere, great Wi-Fi, a 4K Smart TV with Netflix and Disney Plus, a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc. with appliances for eating in a dehumidifier, umbrellas, towels, shampoo, soap, and a spacious shower. We try to combine our love for nature with spoiling you with every amenity we can think of. It is a good idea to pick up some groceries on the way up to Volcano, if you will be eating in. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and collected into a catchment tank. When water is turned on, it is pumped through filters and an instant hot water heater will supply all your needs. We do provide drinking water though, for your benefit. This is a rainforest on the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain’s first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Don’t think of rain as ruining your trip, but instead an asset to be enjoyed!! We pride ourselves in giving you a 5 star experience at our Beautiful Big Island Bamboo Tree house, while also being just a few minutes from the National Park, lava tube caves, restaurants, hiking, shops, art galleries and craft venues, Sunday morning farmers market, and golf. Just a little further and you have Green and Black sand beaches with turtles, Akaka and Rainbow Falls, Botanical Gardens, and helicopter and boat rides. At night spend some time star gazing on Mauna Kea summit or just from the house. You will never feel so close to the stars as you do here. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Kilauea has been active for decades. There are hiking trails in and around the park, through rainforest, desert, and volcanic devastation; even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. And Volcano Village is nearby with a few restaurants, a small store and a place to buy gas. This island is so unique and beautiful! Prepare yourself to enjoy nature at it’s finest!! We promise to do everything we can to make your visit both memorable and enjoyable. Please allow us the chance to serve you and we will do our part to make your vacation the best you have ever experienced. Please ask about Kama’aina, military, rates. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Fridge for Food/Drink Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. Tia is on site, and I can always be reached. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 5 miles from Volcanoes National Park.
People here are extremely friendly and try to represent the Aloha spirit. Because of the jungle, you will rarely hear others and the property is very private. Volcano is a small town with some services listed in our manual. Even though it is small, over a million people visit the park located only a few miles away every year. One of the only places on Earth to see and observe an active volcano. The Bamboo Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés.

  • This is truly one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever stayed! We arrived after dark so waking up amidst the trees and taking in the whole view and all the sounds the first morning was magical. We spent most of our time here exploring Volcanoes National Park, so the location was perfect for us. The treehouse is gorgeous and romantic, and cozy and comfortable at the same time. Beautiful stargazing at night from the driveway, and perfect for morning coffee on the deck. A one-of-a-kind experience that I can’t recommend highly enough!

  • This was the best AirBNB we have ever stayed out. We wish we could’ve stayed longer. So unique and adorable. It was spacious, clean and surrounded by tropical jungle in the heart of Volcano. Check in was easy. Communication was prompt. I highly recommend.

  • This tree house was amazing! Beautiful, serene setting that was perfect for a little get away for my girlfriend and I. They even decorated the bed and left a birthday card for my girlfriend upon arrival! The fireplace/heater was perfect for cold nights and the shower was incredible. We will definitely try to visit again next time we’re in the big island.
