Places to stay in Kurtistown
Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

  • No matter how breathtaking you think this listing is, just wait until you see it in person! Pictures can’t capture just how perfect this place is!

  • This is a magical place, you can't ignore your inner child when you're at the tree house. You have all the privacy in the world and it's a place where you truly connect with nature. Loved it!

  • We had a wonderful time at Kristie's beautiful tree house. The house and the location are quite spectacular! Not only did we enjoy the beautiful house in the wilderness but we also truly enjoyed the little things like the apt books and games she had left for us. My wife really enjoyed showering with the view of the wilderness 🤭. Also, special mention for her hospitality and ease of check-in and out, everything was very smooth. Would definitely recommend this experience! Thanks Kriste! 😃

  • Stay here. Just do it. If you love the outdoors and just getting way, this is the spot for you. Communication was a breeze and finding it was easy because she literally covered any questions/needs that could have come up. Beautiful spot.

  • Amazing place. 100 per cent would recommend. Super private and great romantic get a way. PICTURESQUE!! Great host too, organised and thoughtful

  • What an enchanting place! I am not an outdoors person, so this treehouse was the closest to camping I will ever come. Glamping is an understatement. Perfectly decorated, lovely touches such as brownies, robes, and postcards to send, and a sense of wonder waking up surrounded by lush forest, orchids, and a family of pigs and chickens. And the stars at night! The eco friendly utilities worked without a hitch, but we tried to use the electricity minimally to be sure we kept enough of a reserve. An SUV was definitely necessary to access the road to the tree house and I would recommend checking in during daylight hours to make getting situated easier. 15 minute drive to Volcano National Park, making this the perfect home base for exploring. Easy drive to Hilo.

  • This place is amazing! All we could hear at night was the rain and frogs, the shower is awesome, you can open the glass shades and you're pretty much showering in the jungle/forest, super quiet. It's all solar but we had no issues with it, easy to use and super comfortable. Perfect get-a-way.

  • This treehouse is like stepping into a Swiss Family Robinson themed Wes Anderson movie. It's easy to tell how much thought went into the build and design. Kristie's attention to detail makes living simply feel so luxurious. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a unique, blissful adventure.

Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!
  • Ekaterina's place is exactly as advertised...an Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest. It's a great way to learn about being totally off the grid and how to use resources (water, electricity etc). Our favorite part was the sounds from the rainforest! I mean, it was pure magic- hearing the sounds of birds and frogs. What a lovely place to spend a night in such a beautiful part of the Big Island!

    Erin2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing! So glad we stayed here. What a unique opportunity in today’s world to get away from technology and enjoy the beautiful sights/sounds of the jungle. This was a stay we’ll never forget. The space is even better than imagined as are the hosts. Also loved the opportunity to see what it’s like to live off grid. They’ve thought of everything; you’ll love this place!

    Brad2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really cool oasis in the rainforest near Volcanoes National Park. We only stayed for one night, but it was great. We loved being up above the tree line and looking out the giant window from bed into the forest. The shower is fantastic and the sound of the rain on the roof gave everything an extra cozy vibe. Really fun addition to our trip and all the AirBNBs that we stayed in.

    Brian W.2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful experience! The space is unique and the location is a great balance of secluded and near other human beings.

    Kat2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A fun experience. Everyone should do it Atleast one time in your life! Great host!

    Crystal2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • We have a fantastic time staying at the Mokuea Tree House. It is definitely one of the more unique AirBnB experiences that we have had. It’s off the grid and located in a beautiful area on the Big Island. It’s really close to Volcanoes National Park so it made our visit to the park very easy. The Thai food truck down the road (Tuk Tuk) is amazing and definitely a must visit with limited food options nearby. During our stay, I unfortunately left my wedding band behind after checkout. The hosts were FANTASTIC in working with us to get me my ring back, I have nothing but good things to say about the Mokuna Tree House and cant wait to visit again sometime.

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

    Caroline2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

    Timothy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • I had a wonderful time with my family! There were playground equipment for children aged 0 and 4 to be able to play with fun, and the response was quick and complete. I want to stay again!

    Noritaka2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

    Rosie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a hostel with attentive consideration from the host. The house is very clean and there is no shortage for me.

    Sooji2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a great week at Morris and Yuka’s place in Keaau. We were amazed by the amenities in the house - it was extremely well stocked with everything you could need and then some! I always wish for a lighted magnifying makeup mirror (which is usually only found in really fine hotels) - well guess what! We were also amazed by the gifts of food that were waiting for us - fruit, coffee, candy, wine, bottled water, eggs, rolls, jam, butter, and sausage. I thought that was very generous. The listing was very clear and accurate about the road noise - this did not bother us, but it might bother some. There were also frog and bird noises, which, again, did not bother us. We liked that we could recycle and send our fruit and veggie scraps to the compost pile, like we do at home. The location was safe and convenient to Hilo and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Morris was a great communicator, and we corresponded frequently through Airbnb whenever I had questions. It was a great stay and a good getaway from the cold upstate NY winter. Mahalo to Morris and Yuka!

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • Adventure awaits! Clean-thoughtful touches-artistic and serene. Book and enjoy for yourself!

  • What a treat! Fantastic, off-grid getaway near VNP. Would highly suggest 4-wheel drive, especially with rain around. Gravel roads with deep puddles are a little rough to get through, but very cool once you arrive!

  • This was an awesome place to stay! Super clean, Melissa was there to answer any questions we had (We got lost because we didn't follow directions well) but she had no problem helping us. Would definitely stay here again and we highly recommend this to anyone thinking about staying near the volcano park or just trying to get away for a few days.

The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. Kilauea's latest eruption began on May 3, 2018 with lava flowing continuously until August 6, 2018. The affected Puna area, in the southeast corner of the island comprises ONE PERCENT of the island of Hawaii, which is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. We are in UPPER PUNA and had No Lava. Pele will determine her future timeline, longevity and destination path. View new lava fields by air or by hiking to our newest black sand beach, Pohoiki. We have additional information on the Kilauea Flow in our Profile. The area also contains the largest remaining untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death as scientist scramble to discover the source and cure. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and Volcano Village for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts. -Historical Hilo town offers museums, tours, local peeps, markets, craft fairs, Queen Liliokalani Park, zoo, arboritium, caves, gold course, art and local grinds/foods. -Locals Beach Parks: In Keaukaha=Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Black Sands in Naalehu, Green Sands/Papakolea at South Point -Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Keaukaha area. -AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale. -Reference books and maps are provided for your use.
  • Good location for the thrill-seeker looking to stay in the rainforest. Thoughtful touches, including the Japanese soaking tub which was delightful. When issues did come up, like the hot water heater and the electricity going on a brief hiatus, they were dealt with promptly. This is not a resort, it is definitely an off-grid jungle location! Full kitchen repertoire to cook up a meal. Space is cozy and for more than 2 people would not be ideal. They were very attentive to our needs. Very close to Volcanoes National park.

  • Stay off grid in a tropical jungle 🌺 the hosts are super gracious, really kind and thoughtful and we really enjoyed our stay with them at the Eco Hale. The little bungalow is super private with lush landscaping - just a bit cold at the time of year we went (feb) but Kaeo leaves sooo many amenities to make sure you stay warm. The tropical noises at night mixed with rain was probably the most peaceful noise ever experienced. You are about 30 mins outside hilo, 45 outside the Volcano National Park and 2 hours away from Kona but in general the island is huge so you are going to drive a distance to get to any particular place. We enjoyed our stay and would def recommend for luxurious off grid experience.

    Kostadena2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • It’s all true. These folks go out of their way with special touches that most hosts skip. Do they have to supply a bottle of champagne for your anniversary? No, but they do! Does Keao have to bake you breakfast treats and give great local tips? No, but she does so with love. I could go on & on but let’s just say it’s a stay in a jungle paradise at your favorite auntie’s or cousin’s - everything is there for you, including total privacy. We loved it. And then, for their generosity and wisdom ❤️🤙🏻

    Nancy2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay for all your travels on the Hilo side. Easy access to Volcanoes National Park and Hilo too. Small space but comfortable and well laid out in a beautiful garden setting.

    Steven2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • We're generally not big on superlatives, but cannot write an honest review of Kaeo's and Karl's Eco Hale without employing a few. Picture yourself on the lanai in a romantic hut, in the heart of a garden-like rain forest, enjoying a breakfast of various fresh fruit (some of which you can pick within a few feet), homemade cranberry-walnut bread, freshly ground locally grown coffee, listening to the tropical birds (and, of course, the Coqui) with dappled sunshine lighting up the scene. It's difficult if not impossible to come up with a better start to a day. Now envision yourself on the same lanai as evening approaches, sipping wine and snacking on (or dining, we chose to bring dinner "home" most nights to have more time to soak up the peace), then filling the furo with warm water and climbing in for a soul soothing soak. From the warmest of welcomes by Kaeo, to the delicious pupu she provided our first evening, to her little touches in decorating both amazing and authentic, it is an extraordinary experience in a perfect location to explore the island. Kaeo is one of the sweetest and most thoughtful souls we have had the privilege to meet. We've already agreed that we'll return for a third visit with her and Eco Hale.

    Mark2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing space in the rain forest, surrounded by trees and flowers. The Eco Hale is well thought out, comfortable, and cozy. Kaeo thinks about every detail that you could imagine. We had three wonderful nights in Eco Hale, listening to rain falling and having dinner in the rain forest. Definitely the highlight of our trip!

    Shuyue2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing place! We loved everything. Kaeo and Karl are the best hosts ever and very sweet.

    Jacco2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Eco Hale for four wonderful too short days and nights, and we LOVED every minute of our time there. Kaeo and Karl have created a paradise in a rain forest for travelers. Their attention to detail is impeccable. The whole place, indoors and outside, is sparkling clean, comfortable, and filled with little nooks of beauty everywhere. We felt sad to have to leave when our time was up, and the morose feeling lasted awhile. If we can ever get back to Hawaii, we definitely know where we are staying then! As to a few particulars, Eco Hale is several miles off the main road between Volcano National Park and Hilo, but the drivein and out is not unduly. The overall location is advantageous. We LOVED living off-grid while there. There was never a shortage of water ...hot or cold... or electricity. The bed was so comfortable! All was exceptional.

Make this hawaiian home, bordering serene Makuu Homestead, surrounded by an opulent natural tropical garden, your special retreat. Three miles from the ocean, and a mile from the main highway, Hawaiian Jungle Hangout offers easy access to eastside highlights--30 minutes from Pohoiki bay (newest black sand beach/part of the 870 acres added from new lava last winter), 35 minutes from Volcano National Park, 20 minutes from Hilo airport, 10 minutes from Keaau town, and 10 minutes from Pahoa Village. The hangout offers 1600 sq. feet of living space. A full kitchen, two bedrooms, plus a den which has a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen round, in a comfortable home on a lush acre of tropical fruits and native plant. Explore the garden within lava rock flows. A memorable place to make your home during your vacation or business stay. Also available on the property is asian fused tropical Hawaiian Jungle Hut. Next to the main house with a separate entrance, the hut is perfect for a couple or single guest, having it's own full bathroom, living room, inside washer and dryer, and kitchenette with a tiki bar. I am usually there, but the hut is also wireless and cable connected and available as a separate rental whenever I'm away.
  • The place is a gem. Lovely house and area just around the corner from Hilo. Liz was caring and had lots of advices and tips. Would love to return. Mahalo

  • Liz's place is fantastic for a couple/family/group of friends who want to just relax in a large space. Very close to Hilo and some nice restaurants the other way (Pahoa?). Liz was extremely responsive via text message and was able to send the housekeeper when we needed help! Mahalo!

  • Secluded comfortable roomy house includes washer/dryer very comfortable

    Duane2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • We are so happy we stayed at Liz's place! The house was on a beautiful private rainforest road (her other rental is attached but we never saw or heard the other renters during our stay). We got there super late but check in is via keypad so it worked out. The house had so much of what we needed. A coffee maker, plenty of coffee filters, cooking oil, spices, enough towels and plates/silverware for all of us, and aloe vera. It's about 15 minutes from Target and other stores, about 2 houes to the Kona side, 20 from airport, and 40 from Volcano national park, but the drive everywhere was incredibly beautiful so we did not mind driving everyday. We saw about 2 geckos every night, we did not mind it but they are unavoidable, so keep in mind if that bothers you. AC worked fine and I was able to sleep through the loud nightly rain but 2 of the people in my group were woken up often from it. So again just keep in mind that if you are a light sleeper you will need ear plugs. Would stay here again and highly recommend!

    Deyanira2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful place that is clean and quiet with 360 degree views of lush, green forest.

    Pete2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We got a lot of information before we arrived. Liz explained everything around the house and sent us a lot of information about the area. When we arrived at the house after a long day all of us were so happy because the house was huge and had more than we needed. We really enjoyed staying at the hangout!

    Kornelia2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great home great location. Loved listening to the sounds of the jungle at night! The communication was a bit much. Too many emails and details. Didnt need to know which cupboard cups were in ect as I can figure all that stuff out so had a hard time finding the time on my trip to sit and read through all the pages of emails. Also bbq wasnt usable as it was covered in mold but other then that the trip and house was fantastic. Loved the decor. Had a great feel and felt like home away from home. Thanks Liz!

    Kate2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • There are a ton of reviews and I read a bunch of them before choosing Liz's place. So, I won't restate everything that has already been shared that is great about this Airbnb. Read the previous reviews for details! We loved staying here. If you are used to the whole Hawaii resort scene on "the dry side" of the island, you might not like the "rainforest side". We loved it! And it was a nice change from the whole "resort thing". I highly recommend Liz's place!

  • Such a beautiful, peaceful space to feel connected to the land and the local community. Great tips on local experiences, friendly hosts, and a truly Hawaiian experience. I cannot recommend staying here enough.

    Angela2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is pretty much perfect for 2 persons. There's a small kitchen to cook small meals in, a great hot water shower, a small sofa, bean bags for sitting around, even 2 lanais! It always feels welcoming, peaceful, and warm, which is exactly what you'd want to come back to after a day of exploring this awesome bit of land. It's close enough to Hilo for a convenient drive away, but just far enough to be surrounded by lush greens by day, and stars by dark night. Also keep an eye out for magnificent neon green lizards with hot pink stripes who hang at the lanai. Anzu and Bill are perfect hosts - welcoming, full of helpful information about things to do, and also gives a lot of space. It's one of the best places I've stayed in through Airbnb, so wld totally recommend this!

    Jac2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great! A cute little cabin with a little distance between the main house and the cabin to keep things private. Bill and Anzu are great hosts who made an effort to give recommendations for things to do on the island that I might have missed otherwise. The cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the two decks (one out front, and one behind the cabin) are great for taking in the beautiful greenery. They also provide snorkelling gear and beach towels. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful stay a little ways out of the city.

    Jordan2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is so relaxing. The surrounding plants and cool breeze with floral scents made our vacation week the best we ever had. No television was a real plus.

  • Tucked away from the city, this is a wonderful place to feel like you're hanging out in a tree house. I was only there briefly, but enjoyed the stars and sounds of nature. Wonderful hospitality!

One of the best things about this house is that it's located less than a minute from Highway 11 on a paved road. This 2 bedroom home is located in a quiet neighborhood halfway between the Volcano Nat'l Park and the bayside town of Hilo (a 20 min. drive both ways). There is a fully equipped kitchen with appliances and supplies (range + oven, refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, coffee maker, and cookware). Clean and comfortable place to come back to after a day of exploring.
No additional taxes or fees will be collected upon booking or arrival besides what is stated in this listing.
When driving down our road, you're going to feel as though you've been transported into Jurassic Park, with the lush foliage and palm trees surrounding you. On a clear night, you'll be able to see a night sky full of stars since there are no bright lights to mask the view.

It was a house full of dishes and water equipment. It was raining and it was quite cold at night. Other than that, it was good without any problem.

  • My family loved this house. Clean and comfortable, also loved animals. We felt like we were staying at my house. Host was kind and helpful. Definitely wanna stay here again. Perfect place if you like nature.

This is a great space for budget minded travelers and who are looking for a safe, comfy and affordable accommodation. The room is in a very humble finished basement suite that my husband and I call home when we are in Hilo. The upstairs and downstairs units have separate entrances. If you appreciate the simple things in life, this space is the place for you. It has privacy, queen bed, wifi, Roku TV, a desk, eating space, kitchenette and a full bath. For $30-45 a night who could ask for more.
It's a large room with separate areas for entertaining and sleeping. It accommodates 2 people very comfortably on a queen bed and futon sofa. The upstairs is a 3 bedroom home unit that we also Airbnb so it can get a bit noisy when guest have kids or heavy feet. There are a pair of bluetooth noise canceling earphones that connect to the TV which has Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora and more so you can zone out to your show of choice.
The house is in an old plantation village toward the end of a cul de sac. There is a big park steps from the house that is perfect for a stroll or stargazing. It's very quiet at night except for a few coqui frogs. However the roosters sound off in the neighborhood at dawn and feeding time.
  • A great budget friendly private room. Would recommend. Everything a private room needs; Clean, Hot water, wifi, parking, and basic cookware. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

  • Nice place surrounded by nature. Kind host, very helpful - just ask.

  • Most likely the best value for money you can get in Hilo. Amazing place to discover the east side of the island from!

    Ricardo2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay! If you’re a light sleeper, definitely bring earplugs, as there can be rooster and baby sounds. It had everything we needed, I’d stay again.

    Sean2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • We can spend relaxedly in large room. The kitchen and shower room are almost reserved, The host, Val, is very friendly but gives me a reasonable sense of distance so I can relax. I can lend a washing machine and a dryer for free, so I think that long trips will be saved. I couldn't hear any chickens except in the kitchen, and I didn't mind the frog chorus personally. I was happy to see Amazon Prime!

    Nobuo2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Away in a safe place, this basement apartment was indeed a bargain! You get what you paid for - a clean and safe accommodation!

    Matt2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • Val’s place was perfect for our 3 Day trip. A Very private space, close to downtown Hilo. The bed super comfy, lots of space, easy to check-in, and they were quick answering our questions. Although I must say if you’re a light sleeper this might no be for you. Rouster , birds and frogs can get loud at night. Besides that no complaints.

    Leticia2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Val's place is a great option for those wishing to sleep comfortably without paying an arm and a leg. It was clean, check in was easy, and the amenities were spot on. Highly recommend.

For those who need to come to the Big Island for work or other necessary purposes, we are providing a sanitized, private, separate unit for you to live in while you are away from home. No "back-to-back" bookings means that more than a day separates new guests and gives us time to thoroughly clean and sanitize the studio, reducing the chance of viral transmission. We will practice social distancing, although our favorite part of hosting is to meet and talk to our guests.
Koki Kottage offers island charm and relaxing serenity. There are no stairs to climb - entrance is on ground level. It is clean and relatively new. The setting is very private, as there are no homes built on the one acre lots on either side. It has its own private entrance, parking and porch. The ceiling fans keep it pleasant on most summer days. Air conditioner on request. The rest of the year, you probably won't even need the fans. We are at 800 ft. elevation with the best year-round weather on the island. The queen sofa bed has a memory foam mattress, which makes it considerably more comfortable than the average sofa bed. It can accommodate up to 2 people, but it is the usual 8 inches shorter than a standard queen bed. A full kitchen has filtered water, a stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, coffee press and grinder, a microwave, toaster oven and rice cooker. Washer/dryer on the back porch. Guests who have needed to work while they were here have said that it is a great setting, to use your laptop inside or on the back porch. High speed internet and WiFi have been sufficient for their needs. The flat panel TV has a HDMI hook-up to connect with your computer.
Koki Kottage is located in Kurtistown, Hawaii -area code 96760. (NOT in Keaau, HI 96749 as AirBnB lists us). Easy commute to Hilo or Hawaii Volcano National Park. We are in a sweet neighborhood called Happy Homes, with walk-friendly roads. Because it is one of the first ever subdivisions in the state of Hawaii, there is great mix of people from all the nationalities found in the islands. The oldest home in the neighborhood was built in 1923. Landscaping on our one acre lot is still being developed, and we will be working on it, as funds become available. Fruit trees are planted and already bearing fruit!
  • I recommend this accommodation to 200%. Very warm welcome from Lori and Ken who are full of small intentions. Very clean accommodation, well decorated and very well equipped. View of a magnificent peaceful garden. In short it was great.

    Aline2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • When I asked my kids what they liked most about Hawaii, I was expecting them to reply "dolphin swim" or "volcano tube hikes". They both said, "hanging out at Koki Cottage with Lori, Ken and Josi (dog) every morning." I think that says it all about our experience. I was very curious about the 5 star reviews, so curious that I booked a studio for my family of 4 though I usually book 2 bedrooms. Well, they did not disappoint. Lori and Ken were there to greet us when we arrived, gave us local tips when we needed them. even hung out with our kids (well, I could not keep my kids from going over to them, not suggesting that you should). The Studio, though one space, was very large, clean, and well appointed. It has all the amenities you need for a family and even the towel warmers were a nice touch. We enjoyed breakfast at the back porch facing a garden, and juicing fresh orange juice from the oranges from their garden. It was perfection! We arrived as strangers and left as friends. Lori and Ken are the best Airbnb hosts we ever stayed with. We plan to return before our kids outgrow the studio :).

    Jessica2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Hosts greatly impact our airbnb stays. Ken and Lori are examples of hosts who do impact your stay and it is all in a positive way. They greeted us warmly, toured the flat and property with us and talked about the area and the islands. Ken being native to the Big Island and Lori having lived there for 40 years, means that you get expert advise on all things related to the Big Island. They know where to go, what to do, the history, culture and more. That would be enough for this glowing 5-star review. But, in addition, they created a studio, that felt private, that we stayed in for a week that was fresh, clean and included all we needed in the kitchen to cook most evenings. In addition, the property is well-located between Volcano, Hilo and Akaka Falls.

    Gregory2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Lori and Ken gave us a warm welcome and a good overview of things to see on the Hilo side. Their place is wonderfully private, with a lovely lanai and an extremely welcome washer and dryer. The lanai overlooks their citrus trees, and we were fortunate to visit while the trees were bearing. The apartment is well appointed and tastefully decorated, with an indoor lounging area as well as a dining area and full kitchen. Covered parking is always welcome, given Hawaii's daily rain showers. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Koki Kottage and hope to visit again.

    Bradley2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Lori and Ken was so friendly and explained a lot of things that we should do. Very clean and cozy place to stay. Their cat and dog was super cute. If I have chance to visit big island again I will stay here again!

    Bbori2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lori and Ken are super kind hosts who go above and beyond. Their cottage is really great! A lot of AirBnBs feel kind of cheep, but this one is just the opposite. The hosts went above and beyond with everything. Spotless, well built, with nice amenities, fresh fruit, a big backyard, and beautiful porch. It is in a great location, about midway between Hilo and Volcano National Park, both of which were highlights for us. I'd definitely stay again!

    Rom2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Koke kottage was perfect. Clean, spacious, private, and comfortable! We very much enjoyed our stay. Lori and Ken were both helpful and friendly.

    Sandi2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • The host was very friendly and the location was not too far for a volcanic tour or hike. The accommodation was clean and the kitchen was well-equipped with no tools to cook and eat. You can also make fresh aces with lemons picked directly from the lemon trees in your garden. It even has a carport, so you can go straight to the hostel without getting caught in the rain.

Also included are beach towels, cotton robes, reef safe sunscreen, beach chairs, wifi, cooler, spa quality bathroom amenities and on site parking and air conditioning. Our bamboo bungalow is quiet and very private.
We are conveniently located just off Volcano road, in a quiet neighborhood, yet very close all the necessities and highways to adventure.
  • Stayed here while visiting relatives who live nearby in Kailua. There are not a lot of hotels or rentals in the area, and this was a great find. A very efficient space--very clean and very comfortable bed. Host was accommodating. Thoughtful touches such as beach towles and snorkel gear provided. Would definitely return.

    Rob2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • You know when you read reviews, I tend to be a little skeptical of how people promote a stay. Please believe me that the Bamboo Bungalow far exceeds a person's expectations. Our first impressions when we arrived that the pictures on the site do not do it justice. You have to see it in person to appreciate all the that it has to offer. The things you'll notice right away are, the cleanliness of the place, the amenities, the decor and the close attention to detail. The bed(s) are so comfortable. The place is simply adorable! Jeanine does a fantastic job as host and you are treated like family. She's available to answer your questions and see to every need. Jeanine is a terrific host!! The only regret we had is that we only booked it for half of our stay. We stayed in Kona for the other half of our trip. If your looking for a comfortable and worry free place to base yourself from on the Hilo side of the Big Island you don't need to go any further than the Bamboo Bungalow. Sherri and I will tell our friends and you should stay there too. I'm absolutely sure you will agree. Thank you Jeanine. Sherri and I want to take you home with us. Aloha. Bill and Sherri T. from Minnesota

    Bill2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed 3 nights in the Bamboo bungalow and enjoyed it very much. We especially liked the great nature around the bungalow and the style of the furnishing. Jeanine has great suggestions for trips and restaurants. Her muffins and fruits are awesome!

    Saskia2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • The Bamboo Bungalow was a wonderful place to stay. We spent a few days on the east side of the Big Island and wanted to be close to both Volcano National Park and Hilo, as well as the northeast side of the island, which made Jeanine's location in Keaau very central for us. Jeanine included a lot of very personal touches and added amenities. We really enjoyed our time and would recommend it to anyone!

    Hillary2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • Quiet place located in a garden paradise with a super friendly host.

    Daniel2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • What a cozy spot! The house is located about 20 minutes south of Hilo. Jeanine was very welcoming and provided so many amenities including local fruit and homemade muffins, both of which were so delicious - she even provided filtered water and frozen ice cubes that were infused with veggies/herbs! The bed was also really comfortable and the ceiling fans were all we needed to stay nice and cool. There are nearby stores for groceries and general items so no need to worry if you run out of supplies. I highly recommend staying here especially if you're traveling along the Hilo side of the island.

    Shirley2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem of a place that Jeanine has. Perfect for a couple and the amount of details was amazing. So many little touches my 6 year old daughter said we should write a thank you note! She was right😄! Thanks Jeanine!

    Travis2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our time at the bungalow. We showed up late from our flight and access was easy and self sufficient. We opened the door to a sparkling clean place with TONS of sweet touches like homemade pastries, orchid ice cubes from her garden and local fresh fruits. She had lots of suggestions for local places to go and was in great communication over Airbnb whenever I asked for other suggestions too. The property was absolutely beautiful, the bed was very cozy and the outdoor shower was a major highlight. That’s not something we get at home so it was a real treat. It was perfect for us and we’d absolutely stay here again!

We welcome you to our little slice of paradise in the rainforest of Big Island Hawaii! Breathe the fresh air, live aloha, and enjoy and explore our 28-acre jungle filled with local flora and fauna. We are centrally located in a quiet neighborhood between Hilo International Airport and Volcanoes National Park (both within a 20 minute drive). We are also near other tourist attractions such as Punalu'u black sands beach, Rainbow waterfall, Hilo Farmers Market, and the Hamakua coast scenic drive.
During your stay, you will have private access to 1 bedroom with a queen size bed and a twin size bed, and shared access to the bathrooms, the dining area, the basic kitchen, the washer/dryer, and our backyard and future farm area. Please note: this room does not have a door, however, has a room divider and curtains for privacy. For your comfort, ceiling fans are installed to keep you cool in your room. Enjoy the sounds of nature just outside your room.
Slice of Paradise is on a piece of land originally given/sold to Charles Furneaux by the Hawaiian Kingdom prior to annexation in 1898. The land was also home to an operational antherium farm in the late 1980's and 90's. Rainfall here is estimated at 130 inches per year, which makes for a lush and green environment. The surrounding area is used mostly for flower nurseries, vegetable farming, ranching and coffee plantations. Heading north toward Hilo, you will pass through the towns of Kurtistown and Kea'au. Kurtistown (1.7 miles away) hosts a general market, a convenience store, a gas station, and the post office, while, Kea'au (3.9 miles away) offers a large chain grocery store and a few other shopping and eating venues. Heading south toward Volcano's National Park, you will pass through Mountain View and Volcano. Mountain View (3.8 miles) is not only known for its views of Mauna Kea, it also is know for its abundant hiking and biking trails and its bakery. Volcano village (14 miles) sits on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano and is best known for its wine and art scene.

  • Amazing spot, between the Volcano National Park and Hilo. The kitchen is well equipped, the room are very clean, comfortable and decorated with a lot of taste. The shower is very nice and the 1,5 bathroom means you never wait for someone to be done with their shower to go to the toilet. Some rooms don’t have a door but it is not a problem because of the way the rooms are designed. The hosts are both very nice, they live upstairs, they are present if you need them but not breathing in your neck. They left local honey, coffee and the in the kitchen fir everyone to use. This place is a rare gem, don’t hesitate.

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • I was already excited to stay at this spot, but walking up to Cary's place nestled in the rain forest was magical. Cary is a traveler herself, so each item in this cozy, open-air ohana was clearly carefully chosen. I cooked most meals on the camp stove, loved the outdoor shower, and the bed was super comfortable. Cary was very thoughtful about giving me privacy, but was also very welcoming and provided some great local recommendations for hikes and beaches to explore. I'm so grateful that she's created this magical spot for travelers to visit, and that I got to spend a few nights there. Mahalo!!

  • Great apartment that the four of us used for 3 days. My teens were happy to have their private bedroom. Bed was the most comfortable bed we had in Hawaii during our 2-week trip (and that includes the posh Marriott Wailea Beach Resort!). We were able to cook a great dinner one night using the different pans, spices and oil that we had at our disposal. Nice Kona coffee was also provided. Location is also great: close to the volcano park and 20 minutes away from Hilo.

  • We were surprised that house was wider than photograph. Getting There By Car Rental At first, you can wander around and the house is in very good condition. There's no fan on the ceiling, so you don't need air conditioning. There are basic seasonings. To cumin powder. The refrigerator has a water purifier so you can drink water. The family of four stayed in three rooms, three spacious beds and two beds that could sleep alone.

  • Our stay was splendid. Lara and Jose were very hospitable and considerate. There was everything in the kitchen for cooking, except the oven; and Lara and Jose offered to use their oven upstairs when we needed it. Amazing place, in a jungle, with a huge property behind the house you can even hike in and see wild pigs :) In the morning we woke up to the sounds of birds and tropical frogs - it felt very special and exotic escape from the urban noise. But supermarkets and restaurants are only a short drive away. There were twice more beds than we needed, and very comfortable. There was a washing machine as well. Highly recommended place for your stay on the Big Island!

  • Super cool place, clean, comfortable, safe, quiet with a nice big deck. The views are nice because everything is nice in hawaii. Much more of a local area which is cool but only a mile to the more tourists, expensive restaurant and shops. I would go back in a heart beat and I live Kaua’i! Lastly my husband is completely blind and he had no problem find his way around and love the place!

    Annie2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place! If we ever come back we wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

    Ryan2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Nadia's studio condo is a great find in Hilo. The location is close enough to everything, yet kinda secluded, which was nice. The studio itself is very clean, comfortable and well equipped for however long tour stay is. The place also has a decent sized lanai, which is a great place to relax. Overall solid place and great stay.

    Phil2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Accommodation was as expected and described, parking outside the property was available on both nights. Clean, comfortable bed, hot shower with good water pressure and plenty of amenities available to us if required. Would stay again if in the area.

    Brian2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • It was great, it had everything you could think of and very clean. I mean they had a first aid kit on the bathroom counter as well as bug spray, sun tan lotion, all sorts of stuff. Snorkeling stuff surf boards boogie boards and a bottle of champagne 🥂

    Wendy2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Nice clean comfortable accommodation near the airport. Several good facilities for adventurers and sportsmen. Nadia is also very available and communicates information well. I recommend.

    Yves2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was nice and well equipped. It was very nicely decorated. The parking lot is right outside the door and the location is central. We would book the accommodation again at any time.

During your stay, you will have private access to 1 bedroom with a king size bed and a twin size bed, and shared access to the bathrooms, a dining area, our basic kitchen, the washer/dryer, and our backyard and future farm area. Please note: this room does not have a door, however, has heavy curtains for privacy. For your comfort, ceiling fans are installed to keep you cool in your room. Extra pillows and blankets are available upon request.
  • Great location. Super comfortable space. The shared house is cool as you get to meet people from all over. We will definitely come back whenever we're in Hilo. This place is 15 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes to Hilo town, and about 30 minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Beautiful peaceful setting. Thanks for a great stay!

  • Ashley’s place is true to pictures and I had a comfortable stay. Her place is easy to find/great access from the main road, in a quiet neighborhood. I appreciated her quick communication and I really loved that my room was sparkling clean. Her instruction on check-in was clear and I didn’t have any problems. WiFi was fast and stable. Rooms are close to each other so I could hear other travelers but it became quiet and was able to sleep after 10 pm. I would recommend this place for your stay at Hilo!

This beautiful and spacious 2 story 4 bedroom house set in a very safe neighborhood is set on a hill with a wonderful view of Keaau's lush land and the ocean view! This house has plenty of spots to gaze at the view including a large patio and large family room with a 65" TV and a dining table. The style is light bright and upscale, the high ceilings are finished natural wood and there is an archway that adds to the house's unique beautiful feel.

Convenient and comfortable place in downtown HILO for the SINGLE traveler. No cleaning or cancellation fees. I'm located 4 miles from Hilo Airport Everything is walking/biking distance: Hilo Bay, parks, cafes, live music. This old neighborhood (1930s) can be noisy with night frogs, neighbor's dogs, wild roosters. So this may not be a good place for those needing peace and quiet. Earplugs are provided If you don't have a car, all guests are welcome to borrow bicycles
Guest stays upstairs in private apartment, and host lives in a separated part in the basement.
Guest stays in the private upstairs quarters of a small house. Our neighborhood is from the 1930s in downtown Hilo. But still has the country-feeling with birds and wild chickens.
  • Quiet location with an old Hilo feel!

  • First of all, this time I changed my return date for one day and there was no accommodation on the last day. I was in a hurry to find a place to stay the next day, but I found Donna's house on Airbnb. It was already in the evening, but as soon as I sent a message telling me that I couldn't explain my situation and stay overnight, I was immediately relieved to answer and I was really relieved. In addition, I was allowed to check in early and listened to the various difficulties. He came to chat in the evening, and on the next day I was grateful to go on a bike tour of Hilo town! A great host with great hospitality. I definitely want to stay at Donna's house again! Thanks Donna

  • Donna is a very welcoming host. Her guidance was really appreciated., helping me find the bike share kiosk nearby for example. I enjoyed lovely breakfasts and delicious coffee. The bed woke me up a bit in the night as it is really creaky, but this did not overshadow my stay.

  • We absolutely loved Windspirit. Clearly both Roby and Kayo have taken the time and pride to make this one of the best AirBnB places we have stayed. The devil is the in the details. Located half way between Hilo and the Volcano National Park was perfect for us. The cottage is clean, with comfortable beds, plenty of towels, and is equipped with more than what we needed for kitchen wares. Fresh oranges from the tree out back are a bonus. Access to the washer and dryer was helpful We highly recommend Windspirit Cottage. Thank you Kayo and Roby. Naoko, Kento, Trip

    Trip2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice accommodation in a nice and quiet environment, apart from the nocturnal frog concert, but a large part of the east coast is affected. Fortunately, the windows close relatively tight, so we could still sleep well. The hosts are extremely friendly and helpful, also in this regard, we felt very comfortable. Optimal location to either towards the volcano park, or to start in the direction of Botanical Garden. Also recommended is the Hilo Zoo.

    Gustav2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is a perfect space to relax after a long day of beaches, excursions, and hiking. Our hosts were fantastic and we will stay with them in the future.

ALOHA! My property is steps away from Carlsmith Beach Park also known as Turtle Beach where you can snorkel with Pacific turtles. It is also 5 mins away from Richardson beach park a prime spot for snorkeling. My lanai overlooks a rainforest. 10 mins to downtown Hilo, and 5 mins to the Airport. Recently the glow of Kilauea lava can be seen from my property.
Hilo has Imiloa Astronomy Center, two art gallerys in town and one in Volcano Park and two museums. There is a black sand beach one mile away. The beach where I live is great for snorkeling and title watching. There is a black sand beach in Pahoa and a green sand bears it South point, There is a new back sand beach in Pahoa and a green sand beach at South point
  • Margaret is a very nice and warming person. The place has a nice location, near the black sand beach and a perfect snorkel place. The Hele-on bus goes in front of the condo.

  • Margaret is super friendly and easy. The room and the apartment are nicely located next to a beautiful bay with many huge sea turtles. I love turtles so for me the location was perfect. At night you hear nice nature sounds, and sometimes an airplane but not much and that didn’t bother me. As a solo traveler I really liked staying with Margaret, to have nice contact.

  • Just FYI- I didn’t realize this wasn’t a Private Condo to ourselves, so I was surprised at my mistake. When we met Margaret though, I knew we would get along splendidly. She’s a wonderful hostess and thoughtful roommate. Thank you for making us coffee each morning and telling us exactly where to go to swim with the Biggest turtles. Best Hostess ❤️

  • Margaret was a lovely host and her home was quiet and comfortable. The location can’t be beat - we went snorkeling at the Carlsmith beach park and saw beautiful fish and tons of turtles! • Amazing stay at Dorothy & Adam’s place. Slept really good with the sounds of nature in the background. Would recommend it to our friends and family. Thanks!

  • This was a beautiful glamping experience. Everything was very clean and the outdoor shower was marvelous. The yurt was arranged beautifully and the breakfast was delicious. Definitely recommended!

    Jesica2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • What a unique stay! Communication was clear and prompt. The space is exactly as described. Driving directions they provided were detailed and had no problem finding it. Adam met us when we checked in and explained everything in detail, even providing us a pair of umbrellas since it's raining so much. The morning breakfast provided of coffee, tea, bread, and local fresh fruits were wonderful. Highly recommended staying at this award winning place.

    William2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Dorothy and Adam's place was different, but amazing! The yurt was set-up: Inside the yurt, they provided all the amenities you would find in a normal hotel room - queen size bed with an extra blanket, desk with a stationary, a map of the area and points of interest as well as local food menus, dresser drawers, mini frig., lights and fan, and finally the ability to charge your phone. The bathroom and shower was located just outside the yurt. Towels provided and the outdoor shower had the capability of hot water nearly immediately. Because their home is ECO friendly they provided the guests with their own soaps [shampoo, conditioner, shower gel] as well as friendly toothpastes. Also since this is a yurt/outdoor environment comes along nature's sounds from the area. With that said, we slept very soundly and comfortably - but if you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. Although we stayed for 2 nights - we had to check out early for our plane flight. But that first morning, Dorothy and Adam provided us a delicious fresh fruit breakfast with choice of water, tea, and coffee. Finally as far as location - their directions are easy to follow. The location to points of interest was very close on that side of the Big Island [Hilo, Volcano Park, south portion of the island]. A normal car will be able to make it to their home, but it is off a beaten path. Still if you have any control of type of vehicle to rent, I would suggest to rent one with a high clearance [suv/jeep]. Thank you once again for letting us stay in your home - we really enjoyed it!

  • We stayed here for just one night but in retrospect we feel like we should have stayed here longer. The lotus retreat was very nice and comfortable, the shower setup was great and the breakfast was even better. The frogs are loud for the first 10 mins but you'll get over it.

    Pushpa2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • It was a great place to stay. I will definitely will recommend it.

  • Gav looked after us for our trip to Keeau; her communication is excellent and you won’t find a better space for your budget! Fresh property fruit was also a huge bonus! Location is perfect midway point between Pahoa and Hilo, very close to tourist stops but also perfect for quiet relaxation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay even though it was short! Highly recommend staying with Diana and Lando!

  • We loved our stay on the Big Island, and the bungalo worked great for our trip! We were only in the area for 3 days, and the location made it very convenient for our visits to the National Park and other excursions, somewhat midway between Hilo and the park. We found a grocery store and a good Thai place nearby, about 6 mile drive, and it was about 20 minutes to get into Hilo for more places to eat, etc.. The privacy of the bungalo was great, and we loved sitting on the covered porch, enjoying the fresh air, the lush view surrounding the property and the soundscape of all the local creatures. It felt remote while being fairly close to everything we needed, only a short drive away. Car is necessary for getting around, but that is probably the case for the island generally. Food prep is limited for this spot, so good to plan accordingly if cooking is on the agenda.

  • Jason was very prompt with greeting us as soon as we got there to check in. The space he has is so beautiful and clean. He even had little tour guide books in the room just in case we wanted to do something off of our plans. We fell in love with the location and hope to come back to visit again!

Aloha! Enjoy a quiet home in a convenient location. Volcano National Park, Punalu'u black sand beach, Hilo town, Kalapana coast are all easy to access. This home is located on a dead end street, just off highway 11. The kitchen is shared and bathroom will be semi-private. There is a mini fridge in the bedroom. We just adopted a large poodle rotty mix three year old. He is very shy and intimidating. If you are nervous around dogs, this would not be a good fit. Aloha! Linda and Kapoula
You will love the King size bed! Just like renting a car, we can see what the sheets look like so we know that when you leave if they are stained then the $100 deposit will have to be claimed. 3 different groups have ruined my lovely sheets. Such a bummer. I should have added the deposit when I first started. I didn't even realize that I could. Oh well, live and learn.
Dead end road. Country setting. Very nice neighbors but far enough away so you cannot hear or see them.
  • There is no need to look any further. Do not hesitate to book this room. You will not be disappointed.

    Shane2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • The best Airbnb stay we've ever had. Linda and Kapoula are fantastic hosts, very welcoming, friendly, always helpful. The house is in a quiet place, close to everything the east side of the island offers. Everything was clean, the towels were the softest in my life :D we really appreciated the large king size bed and my husband enjoyed the gym. And last but not least.. We loved the two dogs and couldn't stop pet them. They're so friendly. Even though Blackjack - the black one, looks a bit scary, he's just a big good boy. Amazing stay. Mahalo :)

    Nicola2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Linda and her husband Kapoula are very warm and nice! Their house is spacious, comfortable and very clean. They gave us many useful advices, really helped us to have a fun and unforgettable time on Big Island. Thanks!! This is definitely the best Airbnb home that we ever had.

    Li2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Linda's place is perfect for visiting many attractions on the Hilo side. On a clear day, you can even see Mauna Kea from the bedroom, and the ocean from the living room! She and her husband are great hosts!

    Eduardo Antonio2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place! Linda and Kapoula were beyond accommodating and the room was gorgeous, clean, and spacious. I stayed for about one month and it was a perfect home base.

  • Perfect experience, host was very friendly and fine. We were very satisfied

    Martin2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Linda and Kapoula’s house is beautiful and welcoming. It was my first stay on the island and although I didn’t get to meet Linda face to face as she was travelling as well, Kapoula was so friendly and kind and made me feel at home. The place is superclean and the bed is so comfy! Just a short ride from Hilo and Volcanoes National park. I’ll definately return. Mahalo nui!

    Lisa2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful experience. Linda and her husband are just the best hosts ever. Genuinely warm and welcoming everyday. I was there for work but they still gave me such amazing recommendations on things to see and do on the island in my free time. Loved the fluffy towels (best towels EVER) the comfy bed and the clean bathroom. I was never too hot in the room, you can choose between the ceiling fan and or air conditioning, so I slept like a baby. They have a great attention to details, I had everything I needed. I would recommend their place to my friends and family and I would ( I hope to!) definitely stay with them again. Also loved coming home to their dog Pono and their cat everyday. They are cuties. Mahalo!!!
