A 400 year old 'A' listed historic mill in a magical location. Set in 14 acres of rivers, waterfalls, ancient woodland with abundant wildlife, all under the famous Galloway night skies. Fabulous, hiking biking and watersports are on your doorstep.
Ironmacannie mill has serviced the local population for over 400 years as a grain mill until it was converted into a dwelling house in 1990. It sleeps a maximum 10 people.; 3 bedrooms and a couple of fold down beds. It is decorated very simply with real materials and a rustic palate. It has 2 bathrooms and an extra loo. The machinery room holds much of the original machinery of the mill, which can still turn when the water is diverted to the wheel. The ancient kiln room door at the back takes you directly into the river. If you are only wishing to book two nights please read the 'other things to note ' section at the end of the description.
The hidden road is a special place, it has abundant wildlife, magical bent and twisted oaks and winding waterways. The local area has many sporting and touristic activities, but we most like the diverse subculture. You don't have to look far to find a unusual happening, alternative thinkers musicians and artists lurk around every corner. Watch out! We are proud to announce, that resident Freya Morton will be offering circus skills workshops: trapeze and acrobalance from April onwards. If you want to treat your self, Freya is also qualified to give therapy & sports massage.

  • I chose this place for my birthday with friends because the pictures looked so good. It turns out the pictures dont do this place justice, it's a truly amazing place both inside and out. It is really cosy as well which was surprising being such an old building. Will definitely return in the future, and Lorraine and Ula were wonderful hosts.

    Rekha2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Group of 9 adults had an amazing long weekend stay at Lorraine's mill. House is beautifully decorated with a very well equipped kitchen. The hot tub was fantastic, even in the freezing weather. Lorraine was very easy to message and very helpful throughout our stay. 10/10 trip.

miles of unspoilt coast line. great walking and cycling. peaceful with amazing dawn chorus. and fantastic starry nights.
  • Something we looked out for when choosing a air BnB was being able to get to it without a car yet still being in the depths of nature ! Which is definitely possible through bus + taxi! Its even a magical stay even when all there is is chilling inside of the yurt during a storm! All you need is friends, wine and games! We thoroughly enjoyed cooking and dancing in the yurt, would 100% recommend to anyone thinking of booking. Alison is the most loveliest host, thank you !xxx

  • Wonderful place away, the hot tub was fab and the yurt really cosy and comfy even in a storm.

    Hannah2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing experience in a perfect location. The Yurt is beautiful and warm, even during storm Ciara we were really cosy. The outdoor hut tub is definitely worth the effort, it’s lovely and cosy in a tranquil setting. We weren’t very lucky with the weather but it didn’t hamper our trip and on the final night we had clear skies. We’ve never seen so many stars. Lovely welcoming host. We’ll definitely return.

    Kirsteen 2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a beautiful stay in the yurt. Warm welcome. Excellent fun setting up the hot tub. Relaxation and bliss at its best.

  • An incredible spot to get away from it all - a cosy rural spot perfect for chilling out and some spectacular landscapes. Couldn't have asked for a more amazing time, from the sunsets/rises to the amazing hot tub and the sustainability of the whole yurt. All topped up with excellent hosts. An all round spectacular few days, wish it could have been longer! Thank you Alison and Brett!

Part of a period farmhouse we have a newly appointed apartment available for holidays in our lovely area of Dumfries and Galloway. Dumfries and Galloway is a part of Southern Scotland often overlooked by those heading North to the Highlands. It retains it's slow old fashioned unchanged character and is a hub for arts and crafts aswell as having many wonderful beaches and excellent pubs and restaurants. Dogs are welcome if well behaved and kept on a lead around the garden.
The surrounding land and gardens are not over looked and guests can enjoy complete privacy.
  • Martin was a great host, my stay was really enjoyable and felt very relaxed. Loved the cosiness of the place and the log burning fire. My dog fell in love with Willow and made his trip special.

    Gillian2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy farmhouse with fully equipped kitchen and Raeburn to keep you warm. Peaceful place on a real farm that is dog friendly. Martin and Willow, the dog, will give you a warm welcome. Great value and highly recomended.

    Mary2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • It was a dark and stormy night... but I was warm and cosy here. Great little place in a beautiful setting. Martin gave me a friendly welcome and had a fire going for me, which was much appreciated.

    Sheri2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I had a lovely weekend. It was very windy and rainy so the fire was welcome relief from the cold. We had a very cosy weekend. We ventured to Caerlaverock Castle and had a lovely few hours there and then back to the warmth of the fire, a whiskey or two and some nice food, cooked in the Agar All in all a lovely weekend. Martin had lots of information about the local area. We would visit again. Thank you.

    Natalie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We were greeted by a friendly welcome from Martin and his lovely dog Willow. My dog and Willow had a great time running round together in one of the fields in the farm. A lovely peaceful location for a short break.

    Lochfoot, Scotland, United Kingdom

The cottage was built in 1901 and has been fully restored. It is the perfect luxury getaway just for two with loch views. Furnished to a high standard with mid century British and Danish furniture and original art. There is an open plan living room and kitchen, and upstairs there is a cosy bedroom and bathroom. The bed is super comfy and has Egyptian cotton linen. There is an interesting selection of books and games and a bluetooth speaker, so you can play music from your device and a CD player.
The property has been lovingly restored by Zoe and has original art from her Art Gallery in nearby Castle Douglas. The open plan space downstairs has a beautiful oak parquet floor. There is an electric stove and individually controlled radiators. The kitchen has everything you need including a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer and NEFF cooker with induction hob. Under the stairs there is plenty of space for coats and shoes, a Dyson vacuum cleaner and an ironing board. There is a TV with FreeSat and a DVD player - Simon has curated a selection of DVDs spanning various genres - there should be something for everyone! All the rooms have been painted using Farrow & Ball paints and there is a striking wall of wallpaper on the stairway.
Parton is on the edge of the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park - on clear nights it is the perfect place for star gazing. To see the stars through a large telescope book a visit to the Dark Sky Observatory which is about a half an hour drive away. Their astronomer gives regular talks about the night sky but you need to book ahead. The cottage looks on to Loch Ken - if you are interested in water-sports on the loch, five minutes away by car there is the Galloway Activity Centre. They offer kayaking, sailing and other sports such as archery. climbing and a zip wire. Galloway is an unspoiled part of Southern Scotland with beaches, mountains and lochs to explore. The busy market town of Castle Douglas is your nearest town for shopping - 11.5km away (a 12 minute drive). The high street is famous for its wealth of interesting independently owned shops - it is a rare find with very few 'chain stores'. There is an artisan bakery, award winning butchers, gentleman's tailor, art gallery, antiques shop and cafes.
  • Our third visit to this wonderful cottage and again, unlikely to be our last, wonderful location and the place was stunning and clean as usual. This time we managed to find a few nice beaches and a brilliant restaurant in Castle Douglas.

    Daniel2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent location in an idyllic setting. Cottage was absolutely spotless and perfect for a relaxing weekend away. The Clachan Inn does an incredible Sunday Roast dinner, the portions are sensational and quality fantastic! The Parton Heritage trail from the cottage is a great walk and would highly recommend!

  • The cottage was fantastic, a perfect location that you can watch the world go by in and a brilliant inbetween for anywhere you'd like to visit during the day. Will definetly be booking again with Zoe!!

  • A great cottage for couples. Clean and stylish in a lovely location. It was well equipped and we had no problems at all.

    Stephen2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful stay in a beautiful area. The cottage itself is stylishly decorated with lots of thoughtful touches, including g&ts on arrival (which were yummy and much appreciated!). The place is well equipped with all the cooking essentials you would need. Everything in the property is high quality and made our stay very comfortable. The views from the cottage are a joy to wake up to and we enjoyed a few days mountain biking around the area. Castle Douglas is only a 10 minute drive away which has a large supermarket, including lots of independent shops to walk around. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back and am already planning our next visit! It’s been an absolute pleasure to stay there.

  • Just returned from a break at the Cosy Retreat. The pictures on the site make the place look beautiful, however it's even better in real life. From the roaring log fire to the invigorating power shower and beautiful decking overlooking the river, this place has everything you would need. Little touches like the welcome hamper added to our stay. A big thanks to Robert and I'm sure we'll be back when the weather is a bit nicer.

Escape from it all at this simple secluded, cosy cottage with stunning views, perfect for couples or families. Kids have space to make dens, climb trees and toast marshmallows. In the evening curl up by the fire, play board games or read a book. This is your own secluded holiday cottage set 1/2 mile up a track away from the main road and no other houses around. Whilst there is no internet or TV, there is a DvD player and you can get limited mobile access (vodafone and 02). Keys are in key safe. Once you have confirmed you will see the number. You have the run of the whole cottage and garden (except the caravan and shed which the owner keeps as storage). Although we don't live close by, we have family in the vicinity who can assist if there are any issues. Just call me on +(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) if there are any problems. Dogs - we're happy for 1 or 2 well behaved dogs, but please keep them off the furniture. The garden is not dog proof and there are sheep, cattle and horses in the neighbouring fields so they need to be kept under close control. However there is a nice walk down to the sea (over main road), where dogs can be let off the lead, and there are numerous great walks a short drive away. Rubbish collection - recycling bins at the bottom of the track (by the main road), are emptied on a Thursday morning. Please put your rubbish there the night before. Ruined castles, beautiful gardens, mountain biking, sandy beaches, lovely villages are all within a 30 minute drive of the cottage. Although there is a bus stop 1.5 miles away in Carsluith village, buses are very infrequent and you are advised to bring a car. The cottage is accessed by a rough track 1/2 mile from the main road (A75). It is perfectly accessible by a normal car, but do take care. Some firewood and coal is supplied, but please use sparingly. There's also a BBQ you can use (please bring own coal). Our children (11&9) love playing in the woods using the rope swing, making dens, lighting bonfires and using the zip wire. You are most welcome to do the same at your own risk. Please ensure your children are adequately supervised. The nearest shops are in Gatehouse (8 miles) or Creetown (3 miles). There are lots more tips and information in the cottage.

  • We had a lovely stay at the very cosy cottage. Perfect location to relax and explore in Galloway during the day and sit back and look at the stars at night! Thanks

    Tom2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic base for exploring the Galloway Forest and nearby seaside towns. Easy to find from the main road, even if the track is extremely bumpy to say the least... make sure you take it slow ! A very cosy cottage, with wood supplied for the open fire. A lovely touch with the gift of wine on our arrival ! The kitchen and bathroom are very basic, but clean and sufficient enough for a few days away - you will need to bring your own milk/bread/supplies etc as there is nothing left at the cottage. Lots of suggestions for places to visit dotted around the rooms ! Apart from tonnes of board games, there is only a DVD player for 'electronic' entertainment, no live TV or Wi-Fi (which was fantastic for us) so make sure you bring some of your own DVD's to the cottage as the ones supplied are mainly children's ones :) Thank you Stephen & Kate for letting us stay at your holiday cottage, from Bonnie, Simon and Juno (woof woof) x

    Bonnie Lee2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place is even better than you can see in the pictures. The outside space is incredible. The cottage has its own private woodland. Our kids (6 and 9) had a great time exploring the woods, playing on the rope swing and zip line and playing in the den. There are great walks directly from the cottage, and many more just a short drive away. The cottage itself is cosy and well-equipped (including plenty of games, books, toys, jigsaws and DVDs). Every room has a beautiful sea-view. The hosts were extremely helpful and quick to respond (even on the day when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the cottage). Highly recommend this place and hope to go back sometime soon.

  • Wonderful place to explore the beauty of Dumfries and Galloway

    Chris2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful, glorious place with amazing views! Everywhere you look is beautiful- even the drive was lovely. We had lovely weather, and watching the sunset and stars was just amazing from the cottage and down at the beach (which we easily walked to). Honestly couldn't recommend it highly enough- if you're looking for a secluded break in a cozy, fire-warmed cottage with fantastic views, this is your best bet. FYI, the other reviewers aren't kidding about the road- it's pretty rough (though I agree it should be suitable for any car), and it is best to go very slow (like, first gear). Also, pick up some condiments such as salt and oil before you get there if you plan on cooking so you don't have to make an extra trip on the road and can just build a fire and relax in all the rural glory of the place.

    Lora2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • The perfect location for exploring the stunning Galloway Forest Park. The cottage was so cosy and secluded and provided everything we needed.

    Rachel2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place, the view is so breathtaking that it is worth a trip just for it ! Ideal if you want to spend the weekend away from everything.

  • This place is a childhood dream! We had such a lovely time with our kids and spent most of the journey home plotting for a return trip. Stephen and Kate have the place perfectly kitted out and lots of helpful information about the area. There's so much to see and do in and around the house as well as the surrounding area. We will be telling our family and friends about this spot. Can't recommend highly enough.

Located in the Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright, in south west Scotland, 67 St. Mary Street was built in 1878. It was then a large fashionable shop, at one time a drapery, and the upper floors contained elegant town houses for the shop owners and their family. The lower street level has since been converted to three retail outlets, one of which is a gallery for a local artist cooperative. The upper floors remain residential.
67(b)2, an eaves flat, comprising 1 double bedroom with fitted wardrobe, and a spacious well appointed living/dining room with fitted kitchen, would be ideally suited to a couple. There is a WC with electric shower. In addition it is equipped with free WIFI and SMART TV. The property is superbly located, being in the heart of the picturesque and sometimes bustling, little fishing town. The harbour is only two minutes away. On street parking is free.
St Mary Street is also home to the newly established multi million pound Kirkcudbright Art Gallery and to Kirkcudbright Museum both within a five minute walk. Two minutes more will take you to the historic High Street area, home of several listed buildings including The Tolbooth, also a gallery, and to the National Trust for Scotland property of Broughton House, one time home, garden and studio to the artist E. A. Hornel. There are several other galleries within the town.
  • Nice quiet place to stay. Great value for money.

  • Iain’s space is easily found and in an ideal spot for exploring Kirkcudbright and Galloway. It is clean and tidy and we particularly enjoyed the bed which was extremely comfortable. The flat which has all the facilities that you need for an enjoyable stay is close to the centre of Kirkcudbright but we had no trouble parking very close-by. Shops and all other facilities are also close.

    Stewart2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great accommodation and in an ideal location. The flat is very self contained having everything you would want and for our visit over New Year we were nice and warm. The location is central to Kirkcudbright and restaurants and pubs are within walking distance, which of an evening is a bonus. There are plenty of shops close by including three bakers and a local butcher that I can recommend the steak pie without reservation. Being so close to a working harbour is also nice. Iain also provided a recommendation for New Years Eve which included live music and a piper at midnight, thank you for that. We really enjoyed our stay and have recommended the flat to friends already!

  • An absolutely great self contained little apartment at very reasonable price. Would definitely use again.

  • One of the loveliest places I’ve ever stayed in. So cosy and beautifully decorated and looks even nicer than the photos! Bed also one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. Bring warm clothes though as the flat can get very very cold!

    Poppy2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay in a very comfortable flat. It was right in the middle of a busy main street so all amenities were close at hand. Iain was a great host and responded to all emails very promptly and his advice on the best bars and restaurants was spot on. Would stay there again if ever in this neck of the woods

    Jim2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • Compact but perfect for a couple. Ideally placed for.exploring the artist's town

    Peter2019-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and very well appointed flat in a great location. Just a few minutes walk to the centre of the lovely town of Kirkcudbright. The flat has everything you need and considering it’s so central is very quiet. Parking is on street but this isn’t a problem at all. Highly recommended and this will be our holiday booking of choice when we return to Kirkcudbright.

  • Beth’s Bothy is a fantastic snug which has been very well designed to maximise the space. It has everything you would need for a relaxing few days away including cooking facilities, TV, wifi and an amazing hot tub. There are lots of walks nearby and some lovely restaurants and pubs in Gatehouse of Fleet which is about a 15 - 20 minute walk away through the woods or on the main road. The snug was very clean and the hot tub is checked daily by the host and drained and refilled after each visit. We enjoyed sitting in the hot tub each night and looking up to the stars which were crystal clear. Even in the low February temperatures, the hot tub stayed consistently warm and lovely. The host also left some home baked scones and fresh flowers for our arrival which was a great touch and very much appreciated. All in all, this is a great place to stay and we highly recommend it!

Very quiet and peaceful location makes staying in this house a joy for those wishing to visit beautiful Dumfries and Galloway and specifically Wigtown, Scotland's book town. Nice clean double room with lovely views and superb kitchen on offer
My home is in a very quiet and lovely location, a mile outside Wigtown, Scotland's book town. The house itself has an excellent kitchen and the room is spacious. The owner is easy going and willing to help wherever he can (That's me, I am describing!)
Very friendly local folks - I am originally from the West Midlands in England so I think I can comment!
  • The house is great, the bed is equipped with a heating blanket, which is great for a stay in January, Joe is very nice and his dog adorable, and the region is splendid. In great stay!

    Julie2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed a night at Joe's place whilst on a cycling tour of Dumfries and Galloway. It was perfect for the purpose and Joe made the process of finding the house, checking in etc. very easy. The room was very clean and comfortable. Joe gave me a good recommendation for a local place to get an evening meal (The Bladnoch Inn). I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay again.

    Simon2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Joe is a very relaxed, welcoming and trusting host. We had a very pleasant stay in his home in a great location in the Machars. The double bed is comfortable, the shower, which is in the bath, has amazingly good water pressure and plenty of hot water so no trouble rinsing out the shampoo! The kitchen is clean and seems well equipped, although we didn't cook during our stay.

    Iona2019-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • Very cozy home! Lovely views, and it’s close to Wigtown, so it made an easy trip. Great host, too!

    Pmbeck20032019-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Great place! Clean and really affordable! Lovely views of the Galloway Hills! If using public transport, you can 'hail and ride' in the area, so the bus stops right at the end of the road. (Tip - if you walk to the right at the end of the road to the interchange, you can catch additional buses that skip Wigtown!)

    Pov2019-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • My stay in Wigtown at Joe’s space was wonderful. Joe was consistently a kind, warm, thoughtful host. He even made sure I was able to get to and from the train and Wigtown- which much to my surprise wasn’t as close as I thought, but I was so grateful for the help there- it felt like he went above and beyond in that. The space was clean and welcoming and warm. There was everything I needed provided and a grocery store not too far away. The location was perfect for me, I didn’t have a car but I found I loved the walk to town and in nature. And for my respite trip it was all perfect. The area is gorgeous, gentle but rich. I would definitely recommend a stay in Wigtown with Joe and would most definitely look to staying there again on my next journey to Scotland. Thank you again, Joe!

  • Great guest house in the lovely town of Wigtown. Comfortable, clean room and an outstanding veggie breakfast. I was very well looked after by Julie and Natascha and have no hesitation in recommending Glaisnock to anyone for comfort, great service and excellent value for money!

  • Great breakfast, loads of books to read.

    Paul2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most and most NB BNB I have ever lived with my daughter-in-law! This place is a book town. The Glaisnock Cafe (public comment I will add evaluation + map) is a small cafe in this town. There are rooms on the second floor. I drove for nearly 10 hours that day. From Inverness to Wigtown, Julie waited for us until 8 pm. The people were very enthusiastic and recommended a local pub (called CRAFT). The next day Julie also prepared a hearty Scottish breakfast for us, which is very delicious. (Remember if the appetite is not so big, don't order everything, because there is really too much for an adult, and you ca n’t finish it ... …), My wife and I both feel the town is clean, julie and her husband and the people in the town are very friendly, the house is clean and tidy, and the price is the best!

  • This has to be one of our favourite Airbnb experiences to date - The Old Post Office is simply stunning. Jane was easy to get in touch with and gave clear instructions where necessary. The Old Post Office is a very cosy, comfortable and stylish space to be in - it also boasts a lovely garden which we spent a lot of time in . We were also very fortunate to have had such great Easter weather which made the whole experience even better. We will be back!!

The Gardeners Cottage is set within the walled gardens of Corvisel House, built by Rear Admiral John McKerlie in 1829. We have restored the cottage in a vintage, quirky style with Donegal & Harris tweed soft furnishings & floral accents to reflect the glorious garden outside! It's located at the edge of Newton Stewart so very handy for evening strolls to the eateries in town. You can take walks in our small forest from the courtyard & hang out in the walled garden - green fingers are welcomed!!
The cottage is a cosy & quirky home with lots of interesting bits & bobs artfully displayed throughout. There is a super king bed in the courtyard bedroom & a double in the garden bedroom (this room is also roadside). We can easily add a single bed if a twin is required for guests, just ask! There is no dishwasher, however a lovely window to look out of when doing the dishes...or even better just treat yourself to a meal out in town (4min walk). There are a plentiful supply of books to snuggle up with & we're totally happy for you to potter about in the walled garden of gardening is your thing!
  • The Gardeners Cottage is a very clean place with lovely touches all round. A big thank you to Anne and Jonny

    Del2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic, cosy cottage, in a great location. Beds were very comfy - I haven’t had a nights sleep that pleasant in a long time! Hosts gave lots of useful local information.

  • Fantastic cottage, great location facing the entrance to Hills and Harbour gin distillery. Easy walking distance to the town. • Great stay and location, lots to see and do in the area and the cottage is quirky and fully equipped. Thanks again.

    David2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • From the moment I entered I felt truly at home, Anne and Jonny have created a beautiful boutique space with tasteful decoration and definitely have an eye for the fine detail . The home from home, which is exactly how it felt, had a beautiful smell from the moment we set foot inside, Harris tweed furnishings, flowers , chocolates, martini glasses, amazing bedding, all the little things you need to make your stay pleasurable plus a whole lot more . The views from the living room were fab, overlooking an amazing garden with rolling countryside in the background. An array of information for us to plan our stay ... everything had been thought out for us, making our stay more pleasant and fun . Close to some amazing beaches and plenty to see and do in the local towns, but mostly this is a superior place to truly relax and unwind. Well done Anne and Jonny ... we can’t wait to return !

    Leanne2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn’t recommend this cottage enough! Lovely hosts who welcomed us into a cosy space with all the bits and pieces you might need. The local town had plenty of shops and places to eat, and the surrounding area provided lots of other activities whatever the weather! Great for relaxing by the fire with a book or going walking for the day, we hope to be back at some point in the future.

Accommodation for 4 on two floors (note steep stair and partially coombed ceilings in bedrooms): Ground Floor: Entrance Hall; Living room comfortably and traditionally furnished with wood stove; Dining room with wood stove and adjoining fully fitted Kitchen; Utility room. First Floor: 1 Double bedroom; 1 Twin bedroom; Bathroom with over bath shower. Services: Full central heating and double glazing * Bed linen and towels included * Washing Machine * Electric oven and hob * Microwave * Fridge * Colour TV with Sky* Stove in living room with initial supply of fuel provided * Cot and High chair available on request * Wifi * Secure bicycle storage * Enclosed garden with furniture * Maximum 2 well behaved dogs with own bedding, not to be left on their own or allowed on furniture or beds. * Smoking is not permitted in the cottage Extras: £20 per dog per week. Original features have been retained, resurrected, and opened up where possible. In the living room there is a huge fireplace that would originally have housed a range, now with a wood burning stove. There is also a wood burning stove in the kitchen diner. Original shutters have been opened up and there are the remains of a flagstone floor in the hallway. After rewiring the electrics and replacing all the plumbing the eaves have been filled with real wool insulation. There are views across open fields and the cattle may nose over the fence to see what you are up to in the garden. There are two pergolas created in the garden areas. One beside the house and one in the garden opposite, both have seating areas so you can enjoy eating outside for family meals or breakfast. Sit out after dark and enjoy the stars on a clear night. There are often bats to watch on warmer evenings and owls in the nearby woodland to listen out for. There is a cosy bird hide to sit in and watch the fun activities of the large, local sparrow population and you may well spot a vole or two nip in and out of the dry stone dyke wall. There are newts in the garden to look out for too. Bring your binoculars to watch the bird world from the bedroom windows.
The wonderful Solway Coast is close by with sandy beaches and rugged cliff tops to explore, while inland is the vast expanse of the Galloway Forest Park so there is much to see and do in the area. The attractive cove at Brighouse Bay is minutes away by car, you can walk there along public footpaths direct from the cottage if you feel like a good stretch. There are many beautiful beaches to choose from most within 30 minutes of Borgue. The area has wonderful sporting facilities including game, sea and coarse fishing. Kirroughtree, part of the Galloway Forest offers a stage of the 7stanes Mountain Bike trail, with others a little further afield at Dalbeattie, Mabie Ae Forests. There are numerous opportunities for walking be your preference for beach cliff top walks or more strenuous hill walking. Golfing is available at Brighouse Bay or there are numerous courses within Dumfries and Galloway all within easy reach. The nearest town, Kirkcudbright caters well for visitors. It becomes a busy little place in the summer months. National Trust run Broughton House and Garden is well worth a visit for the garden alone. A multi million pound Gallery opened up in the summer of 2018. There are many areas of conserved architecture to wander around and welcoming cafes to rest at. Kirkcudbright has a busy working harbour and marina and the boats are a very impressive sight when alongside. There is a good choice of pubs and restaurants for an evening meal. There is also a hotel in the village of Borgue that does meals. Maybe best to book in advance in the busy seasons because it can be difficult to get a table but the very welcoming hosts will try and fit you in. There are too many enjoyable leisure activities around Kirkcudbrightshire to list here but some of the biggest draws are; Forests galore to enjoy and walk through. Walk to the top of Kirkcudbright to Barhill Forest about 10 minutes from the centre. There you will find a bird hide with squirrel feeding stations. • This is a really beautifully cared for little cottage with lots of thoughtful and cosy little touches. It's just on the edge of a medium size village, right on the road but with garden behind the house and on the other side of the road as well. It's a great base to explore the beaches, woods and hills of the area, we had a lovely time!

  • A perfect, cosy, clean and quiet cottage. Had everything you would need and perfect for those who love to walk. Secluded enough to decompress but very accessible to local amenities with ten mins. Our little dog absolutely loved the place also!

  • This is a lovely house and I would definitely recommend it. The sitting room is cosy and the kitchen has plenty of room to socialise and cook. The garden areas are an absolute delight. You will find everything you need within the house and the location is perfect for making the most of this beautiful part of Dumfries and Galloway. Rachel is a most generous host.,

  • Wow this house is so amazing. It has a loveey homely feel and Doreen makes sure everything is perfect with some lovely personal touches. Making sure the heating was on when we arrived and fresh flowers, fruit and milk. We have stayed in many bnb's and this is one of the best. Looking out the kitchen window at a lovely little bridge and waterways with boats moored and friendly town people walking their dogs. Such a beautiful lovely town. Doreen was kind enough to do our washing. We were really grateful as we are travelling all around the UK. Thankyou Doreen and Alec. If we are back your way we will not hesitate to stay again.

  • Doreen's place is the perfect location for all amenities in Kirkcudbright. Everything is on your doorstep. On arrival, we were greeted by Doreen and her husband. They showed us round and made sure we were settled and confident with using appliances, heating etc. The house itself is lovely and immaculately presented. It's bright and really spacious and offers two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The kitchen is spacious and has ample pots, pans, crockery etc, if you decide to make a meal. There's also a dining room and also a table and chairs in the kitchen too. Also lovely fresh flowers on display and fresh fruit, tea, coffee milk and sugar were provided, just what was needed after a long drive. I highly recommend Doreen's place for short or long stays, it has everything and more for a comfortable holiday. Thanks Doreen, you are a wonderful host.

Owl Cote is a unique house, sleeping 5 just steps from the sandy & safe beach at Carrick. Stunning views from the upper balcony, with everything provided for a peaceful & memorable stay. Within the dark sky zone & surrounded by coastline & wildlife, its an escape from today's hectic life. Cycling, sailing, walking & exploring as well as Art & entertainment for everyone, nearby. Dogs & children welcome. Fully Managed & more infor on website. Other check-in days may be possible. Please enquire.
Owl Cote is in a rural location, with the last mile of the drive only accessible on an unmade up hard surface track. Slow driving speed is necessary. Beautiful area for star gazing as no light pollution. It is an area of unspoilt natural beauty but equally it is within a short distance to the towns of Gatehouse, Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas where everything is available. Within the grounds, but totally separate is a small Bothy - The "Birds Nest" which sleeps 2. This can be rented as additional space or booked separately. Both properties may have flexible arrival dates if a request is sent and we will try and assist.
The coastline here is magical and the sunsets and clean and clear light has attracted Artists to this area for years - it will be easy to understand why when you visit. We enjoy a micro climate with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico, making botanical gardens bloom and a generally mild year round climate (for Scotland!). There is so much to do and see in the immediate area. For up to date listings, check Dumfries & Galloway Whats on.
  • This is a beautiful house, very clean, smart decor and had a well stocked kitchen. The upside down nature, with the lounge upstairs meant we had lovely views of the coast. The night sky was remarkable too! There's lots to see and do around here, castles, beaches, good walking country, we were sorry our break was so short.
