Why locals recommend it

This is a proper London boozer. Inside its corner facade, it has really dark walls, 100 years of smoke in the carpet, an old till that makes a “ping” noise. The guy behind the bar is always kind of surly. They won’t give you a glass of water, and there’s no food, but it’s got a great atmosphere and really good live music. It’s cash only, so bring your reddies, as the ATM is a long walk away.

If you’re looking to step back in time go no further than the Palm Tree – the sole survivor on a street bombed during the Blitz. And little has changed post-war, the bar is split into two rooms (one seems to be more popular with regulars) both are bathed in weird red light and there’s jazz on regularly. It does have a canal-side terrace for the summer, or you can sit in the park and listen to the music.
