Tips from locals
Just up the road from us, this bird sanctuary is protected by a long predator fence. The Sanctuary is home to an ever growing population and variety of native birds. With walks for any level of fitness in lush native bush we recommend a visit.
If you’re into walks (of all abilities) the sanctuary is a must do. Surrounded by a rodent proof fence allowing birdsong to be heard as you walk the myriad of well groomed trails. Bubbling brooks & beautiful native plants in abundance. It’s worth the entry fee for sure.
So close to town. An enjoyable cycle along the Brook River, through the Brook Valley until you come to the Waimarama Sanctuary, Visitors Centre and Historic Walk. You will probably see Weka's by the centre. Walk is 45 min return alongside the stream and 19th century waterworks. Diverse secondary forest full of ferns and fruiting trees and bird numbers are increasing.
