Look for the blue neon bird next to the Durham Hotel, descend the steps to the basement, and you’ll be at the newest cocktail bar for craft cocktails and itty-bitty bites. It’s a sleek, sexy place for a drink – and they have great mocktails, too.

Fabulous cocktails and ambiance. Ingredients sourced locally.

For my money, this is the chillest cocktail lounge in town - in the basement adjacent to the Durham Hotel. I love their 'Return of the King' (a bourbon with rosemary-fig jam, cinnamon wine and lemon).

Everything about this spot is special, from the cups and tiles made by one of the owners to the artfully crafted menu featuring local ingredients. The basement space is beautiful, creative, and intimate - one of my favorites. They also feature a selection of non-alcoholic drinks that are just as good, if not better than the alcoholic offerings. Recommended: Bee Durham, Buried Treasure, Grilled Cheese.

Kingfisher (321 E. Chapel Hill St.) is a squirreled-away watering hole downtown with Tuesday night jazz most weeks.
