Places to stay in Penrith
HerdyView Lodge is situated in a peaceful location, overlooking rolling hills surrounded by nature on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is a cosy, modern 3 bedroom chalet with a log burner. Situated close to the market town of Penrith and Lake Ullswater it is in a perfect location for exploring the Lake District and the Eden Valley. Away from the tourist crowds but also within easy access to hotspots and amenities. There are attractions in the local area for all ages and interests.
HerdyView Lodge is a Scandinavian lodge based on a small, quiet residential site and is surrounded by local farming land on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It is within easy access to the Lake District, Eden Valley and the Peninnes. Surrounded by local wildlife and plenty of walks. The lodge is well equipped for all self catering needs and comprises of 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a large open plan lounge/kitchen. Guests are free to use the log burner and wood is provided for their first fire. The old traditional large windows at the front opens onto a decking area that overlooks fields in front (often occupied by Herdwick sheep). At the back of the lodge is a small garden with seating where a small BBQ and fire pit are also provided. Here also there is a small herb garden to use. There is space for two cars to park at the front of the property. There is always tea and coffee to use as well. The space is very peaceful and relaxing with herdwick sheep, rabbits, deer and cows regularly occupying the view. The lodge is convenient for the M6 north and south also.
The lodge is 5 minutes from the Market Town of Penrith and 5 minutes to Lake Ullswater. There are plenty of nice pubs, tearooms and restaurants nearby to enjoy. There is a pub within walking distance serving local ales and food. The nearest villages include Askham (an pretty village where Askham hall is located who have an award winning tea room and restaurant), Lowther (where you can explore Lowther Castle and Gardens), Tirril (the Queens Head pub here sells award winning pies). There is direct access to numerous walks/cycle routes in this surrounding area, Eden valley, Lowther land and the North Lake District fells. Lake Ullswater has many walks connected by the Ullswater steamer boats, access to different water sports and many other attractions. Pooley bridge is the nearest point on the Lake, where there are pubs, tea rooms, shops and walks. Another fantastic area to explore is Haweswater reservoir, a quieter place and where walks are more remote and equally, if not more, beautiful (if you have a Northern Lakes OS map then the front cover is a picture on a walk at Haweswater). The Market town of Penrith provides you with local amenities, supermarkets, independent shops and cafes. There are many places to take children nearby, visitor centres (such as Rheged and bird of prey centre), an ice cream farm and also many historical sites to see for example Lowther and Brough castle. From the lodge you can easily explore a wide variety of areas, not just the Lake District National Park but also the Pennines, Eden valley and the historic north Cumbria (such as Hadrians wall!)

  • Stayed here for a relaxing weekend. The place was great. Comfortable, with everything you need to have a chilled time with friends. All the great info provided before we arrived meant that we could just pull up and make ourselves at home, but May was very hospitable and happy to provide any help we needed. We would stay here again.

Walking distance to a great local pub and superbly situated for Ullswater and into Penrith. Would highly recommend!

  • I was taken care of for 4 days by traveling alone. There was no bus on weekends, but the host checked the recommended walking points every morning and sent them to the bus stop where the bus was out. Postcard-like scenery, farms have footpaths everywhere, so you can walk inside. Very recommended. Sindy and Terry (and lovely colli) were very nice and thoughtful! The room and en-suite bathroom were clean and tidy, also full English breakfast was lovely. You'll see the view like postcard. I'll definitely come back! Ryoko

  • What a wonderful experience we had at La Ruche in Tirril! Sindy and Terry were the perfect hosts. They were very willing to answer any of our questions and make recommendations, all the while totally respecting our privacy. Our accommodations were spotless and the bountiful breakfast filled us to the brim! In addition, the separate entrance gives real indépendance to the traveler. We would return to La Ruche again and again!

  • From the moment of booking our stay, Terry and Sindy have been nothing but helpful! The location was great, the house was beautiful and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious and filling. Terry and Sindy were great hosts advising us on places to visit and eat. Would highly recommend anyone visiting Lake District to stay here. It was really a 10/10 experience and couldn’t fault it in any way.

Easy to get to Ullswater and surrounding areas, the cottage had everything we needed, spotlessly clean and with a few nice touches like the SNES, extensive local information and the Sonos speaker. It was absolutely spotless on arrival, well equipped and situated in a nice, quiet and friendly village. I would definitely recommend the cottage, and Tim was very communicative and helpful in the booking process.

  • The cottage was absolutely perfect for a few days walking in the Lake District - spotlessly clean, very well equipped and in a wonderful location for the Eastern Lakes. There are lots of footpaths nearby and Pooley Bridge is about 20 minutes drive away for the steamer on Ullswater. The local pub - the Queen's Arms - had delicious food and friendly patrons, and we enjoyed chatting with the locals in the village too. Highly recommended.

  • We spent 3 nights at Tim’s place. A clean, cosy and comfortable cottage that we absolutely loved. The kitchen was well equipped for us to cook our own meals. If you don’t fancy cooking, it’s only a short walk to the local pub for a pint and meal. Very cosy atmosphere there too. One of the better places we’ve stayed at so far. We will definitely choose to stay here again, and highly recommend others to also consider!

  • Fantastic hidden gem! Myself and partner were on our way up to Scotland and wanted a brief and beautiful stop off in the Lake District so Penrith suited perfectly for location. The cabin we had at Orchard Hideaway not only offered us the convenience of nearby major roads but also the vast surrounding countryside to enjoy so we didn’t have to sacrifice the views etc just for an easy route onwards. On arrival we parked in the car park (directly next to reception) and were greeted with friendly smiles and hellos as we walked straight through to our cabin. We managed to use the “self check in” with our key code so easily, and opened the door to find a really clean space with tea, coffee, plates and cutlery and a microwave. Bed was very comfy which surprised us and overall the cabin was much larger than expected. We also had a private bench with table and bbq area to enjoy although only spent 1 night so did not use this (even though it was a fab touch!). The toilets and shower spaces were unbelievably clean and very modern with the outdoor sink space being quirky and pulling us back into the ”camping” charm. We could only praise this stay, and cannot wait to come back in the future with friends/family, book up a few cabins and enjoy the break away. Thank you again Orchard Hideaway!

  • We had an amazing stay in these wonderful Pods. They're perfectly sized, being small but thoughtfully laid out. They're also perfectly spaced from their neighbours to create a community feel without having the feeling of being overheard or for there to be any noises from your neighbours. Both the baby and the dog had a great time in the pod and on the site as a whole, and we're already planning our next trip.

  • A convenient overnight motorway stop with a difference. Must be lovely when the apple blossom is out!

  • Stayed with girlfriend and dog for 3 days/ 2 nights, and loved it. Great little pod with a heater that kept us all warm, and a barbecue area outside that would be brilliant in summer. Hosts were friendly and welcoming on arrival, and facilities were clean. Recommend/ happy to stay again.

  • Very impressed. Recently stayed for a few nights over Christmas. On arrival the Lodge was spotlessly clean and Charlotte had put up some lovely decorations around the lounge/kitchen area including a stunning tree in the corner. 2 good sized bedrooms, one of which is a converted conservatory and 2 nice sized children's rooms. Spacious kitchen/dining area and a lovely log burner which we made good use of. The kitchen is very well equipped from pots and pans to glasses. Lots of games and kids toys to be found under the TV. The host has really thought of everything and obviously takes pride in the home. It always felt warm and cosy and has some lovely views- once it got light! Plenty of parking which was good as our party had 2 cars and a small trailer. Good WIFI as well. Did a couple of trips into Penrith as well which is only a 10 minute drive away. Highly recommended.

    Andrew2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • The lodge is spacious, spotlessly clean and has everything you could need for a break away. Thanks Charlotte! We will certainly recommend and hope to return in 2020.

  • This was a perfect house for our holiday. 2 families , 8 adults and 4 children. We all had our own space and the house is perfect for larger groups. Plenty of parking for 2 cars and lots to do only a short drive away. We had meals in and out and can recommend the Dana Curry house in Penrith for a take away and they delivered. Definitely recommend going to Lowther Castle which is a short drive away. We were lucky to be there for the Halloween event which was brilliant! All in all a great place, good location and lovely house. Thanks Charlotte !

  • An amazing lodge with everything you require for a perfect getaway, Charlotte responded promptly to all requests, the photos of the lodge do not do it justice at all. We will be returning as a family to Charlottes place in the near future. Highly recommended

  • My family have all enjoyed an amazing weekend at Windy Nook. The lodge is everything we could of hoped for and is set in a great location from which we explored much of what the Lake District had to offer. Cannot recommend this place enough and will be back again myself. Most well equipped holiday home I have ever stopped in and the decor is very homely and was a great place to spend a chilled evening in front of the fire with our two dogs. Loved it.

  • Hopland Cottage is homely and comfortable. A real home from home. Jan and Dan were the perfect hosts, friendly and welcoming. The offer to pick me up and take me to the train station was an added touch I wasn’t expecting. It made my travel so much easier. Easy access to Penrith and Keswick on the bus, 5mins walk away. Village is friendly and quiet. Walks from the door. A really peaceful and relaxing stay x

  • Simply perfect! Beautifully appointed but homely cottage in a stunning location. Would highly recommend 👍🏻

    Annette2019-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Jan and Dan set the highest standards for being super hosts! Their attention to every detail was remarkable...initial greeting & orientation, informative well-prepared house book, great tips & recommendations, etc. They anticipated every comfort & convenience and supplied it with generosity. We were delighted to meet them! And the dear, beautifully restored cottage was a complete luxury of charming comfort: furnishings, linens, decorating, all amenities were the highest quality & such a pleasure to enjoy. Oh, and the very beautiful garden & patio was a joy. Hopland Cottage is not a standard Airbnb. It is exceptional! We rented for a month and felt we were in a dreamy storeybook illustration, that we didn't want to leave. As an added bonus, Stainton is a sweet village & a perfect location for day trips to the surrounding towns & lakes. Also, the nearby buses are reliable, comfortable & a good alternative to using the car. If you want to visit the lovely Lake District, you couldn't choose a more perfect home away from home.

    Terry2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Hopland cottage! The cottage was tastefully decorated, warm and inviting and had all one would need for a "delightful weekend in the country" I'm quoting from the film, Withnail and I, I'm a huge fan, a lot of the movie was filmed in the surrounding areas, which the hosts were aware of and they were happy to give us a little more history on that, which was greatly appreciated. It's a perfect spot for some amazing walks, pub lunches and of course a beautiful drive to Lake Windermere, even through it rained most of the time, we thoroughly enjoyed it and still managed to take a boat out on the lake and enjoy some cosy fireside dinners. Would highly recommend! Thank you again Jan & Dan!

Grade 11 listed chocolate box cottage, in the picturesque village of Askham, in the Lake District. Easy access to all the Park's mountains, and lakes, with a variety of outdoor activities and village pubs.
We offer a warm welcome for families or friends to our Grade 11 listed cottage, in the picturesque village of Askham, in the quiet NE corner of the Lake District National Park. We are half way between Ullswater (5miles) and Haweswater (6miles), within easy access of all the Park's mountains, lakes and fells, with a wide variety of outdoor activities and good village pubs close by. Lowther Castle with its gardens, cafe and childrens play castle is a 15 minute walk away. It really is a home away from home, with all you need to create your peaceful and memorable holiday in the Lake District National Park! We have equipped and decorated the cottage for you to relax and unwind in with traditional wooden beams, quirky rooms and fabulous view across the village. We have combined antique and contemporary furniture and paintings in a traditional Lakeland country style. You'll love the stylish master bedroom with kingsize bed, the pretty double room with basin and wardrobe space. A quaint third bedroom has a single adult bed is available on request. Walkers and cyclists can explore the many footpaths and quiet country lanes from our door, without having to use the car. Our scenery is crisscrossed with a patchwork of ancient drystone walled 'driftways' leading down to the meandering River Lowther, or up onto Askham Fell above the village. In 30 mins walk from the house, you'll overlook spectacular views of Ullswater (only 3miles across the fell) and it's surrounding mountains, all the way to the majestic Blencathra in the north. You can also explore a group of prehistoric cairns and standing stones left by Helton's stone age settlers. For families, 2 minutes walk from the house is Askham Open air swimming pool which is great for relaxing in the summer. If you have children to entertain, where better than a pretty mile walk from the cottage across the deer park of Lowther Castle, to the amazing new Lost Castle adventure playground and cafe in the woods behind it. On your way back you'll need to allow time for a drink in either of our 2 great traditional pubs in the village.
Askham has long been regarded as one of the region's loveliest villages. The main street's ample verges and fine trees are flanked by a charming array of picturesque cottages set at differing angles and elevations. It forms an attractive avenue, extending from the River Lowther uphill to open moorland. Nearby is the great Estate of Lowther Park, seat of the Earls of Lonsdale whose ancestral home is currently undergoing major regeneration. The village has a church, inns, shop/post office and is very accessible, being only a few minutes drive from Penrith, the M6 (Jns. 39 & 40) and Ullswater.
  • Jacqui’s place was absolutely perfect. It was warm, cozy, with just the right amount of modern updates. It’s a great location while exploring all the activities around the Askham/Penrith area. I would highly recommend a stay here!

Friendly stylish + cosy B and B in a converted 18th Century watermill. In an idyllic riverside setting outside the villages of Sockbridge + Tirril, 3 miles from M6 J40. Artists' studios and gallery on site, locally sourced food, home baking. We regret, we don't accept pets.
There has been a mill at Sockbridge for at least 250 years, so we are luck to live in a beautiful location steeped in the History of Cumberland. The surrounding countryside is teaming with wildlife, and visitors can go for pleasant walks by the River Eamont. Gary and I are both practising artists, and we are very happy to show visitors around our two studios on site, where we make paintings and prints. It goes without saying that you will be treated to a lovely breakfast including home-made bread, and locally sourced produce!
Sockbridge Mill is located next to the River Eamont which you can access via a public bridal path that runs past the house. There is abundant wildlife here, and you may see herons, woodpeckers, stoats, hares, and occasionally red squirrels. The villages of Sockbridge and Tirril are a 20 minute walk away, which is perfect for a trip to the village pub for dinner or a pint. Lake Ullswater is just 3 miles away.
  • I really enjoyed staying here. Debby and Gary are terrific hosts, and I was well cared for. They could not have been more gracious. Their home, converted from an old mill, with amazing old timbers, is a treat for anyone tired of prefab cookie-cutter houses. I loved it. And anyone who travels often knows that breakfast can be hit or miss. This one's a hit. If your travels take you anywhere close, stay here.

  • A fun place to stay! Beds and sleeping bags were comfortable, and a lovely feel about the set up. Would happily recommend.

  • A lovely place for families- the kids loved the bunk bed! Great facilities

    Colette2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Very luxurios glamping. Heated cabin with beds and hot showers make it a better option then camping for the price. Guests expecting hotel like accomodation will be disapointed, but for our one night stand on a way to Scotland it was just perfect. Placed between highway and railways the noise did not exceed our expectations and as common Londoners used to some level of permanent background noise we hardly notice it. We were very pleased with our stay.

Entire flat above country pub, in great location with private car park. All the rooms have T.V, WI-FI access, and towels. There are two standard double rooms and a family / bunk room with one normal double bed, and two bunk beds - double on the bottom and single on the top. Small kitchen with fridge, oven, microwave. There is one bathroom with bath and shower. Perfect for families or walking / cycling trips in the lakes.
Hello. and welcome to my listing, thanks for reading. The room is in a flat above a family friendly country pub built in 1737 and steeped in history. It is ideally situated being walking distance from Penrith town (about 1 mile or £4/£5 taxi) and being just off the M6 Motorway and A66 main road. It sits right on the edge of The Lake District National Park and is about 5 miles from the popular Ullswater and Pooley Bridge. There are walks nearby either along the River Eamont or to Brougham Castle. Entire flat above country pub, separate to the pub itself but I can book you in for meals. There are three separate bedrooms as described, kitchen and bathroom and toilet. There is a beer garden, kids play area and the pub has BT and Sky Sports. The flat is basic but should have everything you require to enjoy your visit. All rooms are clean and tidy, we are new to Air B&B and working with a small budget - all beds, mattresses, sheets and towels are new this year and we have just been painted and had new carpets fitted (some reviews are before this). During busy times and during the day there maybe noise from the pub so please bear this is mind.

Easily accessible from Penrith centre and close to the Rheged centre which has a stop for buses connecting Penrith and Keswick (going as far as Workington). Really recommend staying here.

  • Really handy for an overnight stop on the way to Scotland. The location was perfect for us, being close to the M6 junction and on the A66. It was vey quiet considering how close to major roads we were. The safe cycle/walking path into the centre of Penrith was an added bonus as we thought we might have needed to book a taxi.

    Sharon2017-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • I wasn't so sure what to expect when booking the pods and was a little apprehensive. When I arrived I was beyond pleasantly surprised. The beds were very comfy, the pod had heating and a microwave so were really cozy even when it was cold outside. The bathrooms and showers were super clean and modern and not smelly at all. Was very pleasantly surprised and would recommend!

This 2 bedroom, cosy and comfortable property is in an ideal position within the town of Penrith, being a short walk to shops and restaurants, 10 minutes walk from the mainline Train Station and Bus Station and on the C2C. The M6 and A66 are both 5 minutes drive away giving easy access to the Lake District( World Heritage Site), Howgills, Yorkshire Dales and the Borders of Scotland. Keswick, Ullswater and Carlisle are 20 minutes drive away. Penrith is a busy market town with Fairtrade status.
This end terrace house is a cosy, comfortable, more traditional feel property which sleeps 4 people and a cot is available to use too. Pets welcome. Downstairs there is a lounge dining room and small kitchen. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, one a king size bed room and the other a twin bed room. Also a bathroom with toilet, sink and bath with shower over. Outside to the rear is a small gravel garden with flower beds and seating. There is also parking for up to 2 cars.
As stated in the introduction, Penrith is a wonderful market town with its own castle and pleasant park. Lovely artisan shops, cafes and bars abound as well as 4 good size supermarkets and food shops.
  • A warm & cosy place to stay. Well equipped and good value. There was a welcoming a pack of goodies - tea, coffee, bread, milk etc - perfect when you've had a long journey. Good location in the town and great for exploring the countryside.

    Kate2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy house very near the centre of Penrith in a quiet location. An array of breakfast items available for use was a really nice touch. We really enjoyed our weekend using this house as a base for visiting the lake district.

    Paul2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Well presented, some nice touches and very clean

    Robert2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed over night here after visiting the Christmas Markets at Lowther Castle. What a wonderful home we were welcomed into. Everything was spotlessly clean. There were lovely touches, like tea, coffee and milk aswell as breakfast supplies. It was such a cosy and comfortable space to spend our time. Really good location too in the heart of Penrith. Belinda was a fabulous host, she answered all my questions and was very accommodating. We cant wait to return.

    Lauren2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect little house for us while in Penrith for a wedding over the weekend. Just a 15 min walk from the station, plenty of shops close by, and clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend if you need some accommodation as a base in the area. Belinda was very quick to respond to any messages and was very helpful.

    Rory2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • We thought that Belinda had gone the extra mile when it came to the little extras, fresh bread, milk, ground coffee in the fridge, jams, cooking oil, tea bags, cereals, were provided and more. We did bring all of this stuff with us on our trip but didn’t need too. I think these little extras are the kind of touches that don’t cost a huge amount but that make a huge difference to your trip, very welcoming. The house itself was spotless when we turned up and had a real cosy feel to it that we liked. I liked the big selection of DVDs as well, great little touch if you are stopping with kids to entertain. Usual bed linen, towels, toiletries etc. all provided and to a high standard. All you need to bring is your toothbrush. Everything was compact and neat including the gardens and the property has a warm feeling about it that we loved and so did our kids. The parking out side and at the rear of the property was good. I have a large VW van and I’m the sort of person that looks for the last parking space in a row at supermarkets and I’ll try and pull over to one side to limit the chances of other people opening their car doors on to me. So if you are one of these, like me, you will also love the end bay parking provided. It was was right up my street. We thought it was a fantastic location and only a short walk into town. An ideal property to use as a base to drive out from if you like walking in the hills around the Lake District as we did or anything else that you have planned. Superb little property.

  • We loved our small, warm and cozy pod that was located so close to the Lake District National Park. Taking a shower was especially nice as it was warm despite it being an outdoor facility. The pods are well-insulated so despite the nearby trains and highway, we barely heard any noise. Groceries are nearby and if you love Burger King, it is right around the corner.

Close to the motorway and train line in Penrith it was easy to access as well as being close to Keswick where we were visiting family. The pods were comfortable and we hired a fridge which was useful. We loved the outside space which was really comfortable and pretty for sitting out in the evening with lovely trees and fairy lights.

Friendly stylish + cosy double in a converted 18th Century watermill. In an idyllic riverside setting outside the villages of Sockbridge + Tirril, 3 miles from M6 J40. Artists' studios and gallery on site, locally sourced food, home baking, log burner in guest sitting room. Large adjacent private bathroom with power shower. We regret we don't accept pets.
There has been a mill at Sockbridge for at least 250 years, so we are lucky to live in a beautiful location steeped in the History of Cumberland. The surrounding countryside is teeming with wildlife, and visitors can go for pleasant walks by the River Eamont. Gary and I are both practising artists, and we are very happy to show visitors around our two studios on-site, where we make paintings and prints.
  • Debby and Gary were wonderful hosts. The room was lovely, clean and welcoming. And the breakfast was delicious. A great stay!

  • My husband and I both had a great stay with Debby and Gary. We appreciated their generous hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk through the fields to the local pub and the general tranquillity of the area.

  • The Sockbridge Mill is a real gem, a historic building lovingly restored, with lots of original features, great location for the lakes but tucked away as a genuine place of retreat and restoration. Debby and Gary gave us a friendly welcome, happily shared knowledge of the local area and made suggestions which were really helpful. Their home is a delight, beautiful decor, comfy bed, super shower, delicious breakfast every morning, couldn't ask for more!

  • We were after a secluded and quiet break in the Lake District, and this Mill and our hosts certainly delivered! Everything from the homecooked breakfast to the bedroom (as described, and complete with mill stream just outside our window) was absolutely lovely. Debby and Gary (and their family) were very welcoming hosts, and were able to recommend great places for us to eat and visit. Would recommend to anyone and hope to visit again. We also did a print making workshop with Debby on our third morning, which was great fun, and would definitely recommend.

  • Beautiful secluded B&B in an ideal location to explore the Northern Lakes! We were made to feel at home right away by fantastic hosts. The Hayloft bedroom was lovely with a very comfy double bed and the private bathroom was beautifully decorated. Brilliant shower as well! Oh, and the Full English in the morning was simply amazing. Thanks for having us, and hopefully we'll be back soon!

The house is set under an avenue of trees which is less than two minute walk from the train station and bus stop, Penrith Castle and the park. Less than 10 minute walk in to the town centre with bars ,restaurants and shops. Penrith is a market town on the edge of the north lakes , approximately 6 miles from picturesque lake Ullswater and the fells and mountains ideal for walkers and cyclists. Public transport is really close by for trips into the lakes, Keswick or the border city of Carlisle.
Quests have the use of the bathroom all guests are asked to use the shower before 11 pm in order not to disturb the home owner and other guests. the rear garden can also be used for those who like to sit outside, cyclists can also store the cycles outside in the garden. The living room is the only private space in the house and not a communal area unless invited . Penrith has the coast to coast route nearby and many reasonably quiet roads for the exploring cyclists . PLEASE NOTE: Check in times vary because of my work shift pattern sometimes around 18.30 sometimes before 18.00 a message will be sent giving you a check in time
Close to the M6 motorway, the train station which has bus routes from it, and close to the Penrith Castle and park

  • A great host, the bed was very comfortable. The only down side we were advised to shower in the morning due to other residents being asleep but we did arrive near 11pm.
