Bohemian Water Tower
PLEASE NOTE *The Tower opens MAY - SEPTEMBER each year. It is closed throughout the Winter* Hello! Please READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH this listing carefully before requesting to book. This place is not for everyone! Thank you. Perched on top of a secluded hilltop in the wilderness, the handcrafted rustic Tower is an adventurous and inspiring place to be. A 'box of light', the three sides of windows look out onto beautiful views. Romantic and peaceful, the Tower is a perfect couple's or artist's/writer's retreat. Take a dip in the sparkling Mattole river just over the road below. Enjoy the spectacular bird-life. The wild Mattole Beach is just six miles away and makes for great hiking and beachcombing. ** IMPORTANT!** The Tower is accessed by a STEEP uphill trail of wooden dirt steps through Douglas Firs. The trail is a 520ft climb - a 5-7 minute uphill hike. You need to be fairly fit. Light bags and backpacks rather than suitcases are essential. This rental is not suitable for those who ought not be taking this kind of hike. For night ascent/descent a flashlight is essential. **IMPORTANT Check-in info** The Tower is a property that needs a guide to show you up there initially. It is quite hidden, and you’ll benefit from a quick orientation up there. Let me know your ETA so I can show you up there and check-in before dark please. The upper storey of the Tower has a Murphy bed (SMALL DOUBLE), which measures 4ft across and is 6.5 ft long from headboard to footboard. Very tall people may find it too short due to footboard. This room also has a long sofa, deco chairs, redwood window seats and a long cherrywood table. The Tower is on two floors, connected by an OUTSIDE STAIRCASE. So *PLEASE NOTE* As the bathroom is on the lower floor you will need to go down the outside stairs to the bathroom. Downstairs is the bathroom, shower and kitchen in one open plan room. This room is unheated. (The upper room has a Vornado heater and a small stand-up oil radiator) .The Tower is a summer abode, open from May-Sep. The kitchen area includes a Wedgewood stove. (There is also a copper sink upstairs for easy teeth-brushing etc). The spring water is excellent for drinking so don't worry about lugging water bottles up the trail! The lower storey also houses water tanks, wrapped in canvas painted by a local artist. Relax beneath the stars in the outdoor in-ground copper bath tub, with plenty of space for two and a small surrounding deck for glasses of wine, or take a shower outside, looking out onto the hills. Enjoy ceramicist Jim Danisch's sculptures punctuating the trail. In collaboration with Petrolia's craftspeople the Tower was designed by my father, a writer and lover of art. For groceries, the local Petrolia store has most basics (including a gas pump) but please bring your own special groceries as you may not find all you need. There are ZERO bars or restaurants in Petrolia - yup ZERO! Bear in mind that the Petrolia Store closes at 5.30pm, so be sure to bring groceries with you if you're arriving later than that, especially for that first night's dinner! There is a cosy farmer's market on Sundays 10-1pm, where you can chat with Petrolians and munch on some home-cooked organic breakfast, check out local goods, and soak up the good vibes. At the bottom of the hill is the main house, where I will be on hand to help out as best I can with any queries and extra conveniences. Details and directions upon booking. To enable a real break from the world and total relaxation, the Tower remains UNPLUGGED. That means...NO WIFI! There is very limited cell service in Petrolia. But fear not, there is an old-fashioned landline available for your private use. BAD ROADS: Petrolia is off the beaten track and lies at the end of a very winding, rugged road with potholes a-plenty. Ordinary cars can make it ok, but if you are hiring a car you will be better off hiring an all wheel or 4 wheel drive that is higher off the ground. Lastly, the Tower is on top of a rugged hill in the WILDERNESS! It is an unsealed building, which means that despite my best efforts, a bug or two may get in, and you might even get a visit from a bat - who eats the mosquitoes and will fly out of an open window in the dark. Sightings are not guaranteed but it does happen, so if this as a dealbreaker for you, this isn't the place for you! Please feel free to contact me with any questions if this seems like your kind of place! Thank you for your interest in The Lost Coast Tower, I look forward to helping make your stay as pleasant as possible. Guest happiness is very important to me, and I am all for helping you when I can! Thanks!
Petrolia is a small unincorporated community in the Mattole Valley. It is an area of pristine natural beauty. There are no bars or restaurants. There is one general store, a gas pump and a post office. And a lot of nature.
  • A wonderful experience in every respect. Daisy is a kind and welcoming host who cares greatly about her guests’ experience. The tower and everything in it have been crafted with great sensitivity to beauty. The windows frame the massive old douglas firs, which frame the meadows and mountains beyond. It has the feel of a temple to nature’s beauty, where the landscape evolves under shifting weather and light like a living painting. Reading Gary Snyder on my second night there I happened across these lines: A high tower If you climb up One floor You’ll see a thousand miles more

  • Where to begin? The tower is a true getaway, and one of the best Airbnb experiences we've ever had. The journey getting there, the drive along the Lost Coast, the short hike up to the tower.....it was a perfect place to unplug and spend a few glorious days. The cabin itself is rustic and beautiful with really thoughtful touches. We were able to cook some good meals in the kitchen downstairs, take a nighttime soak in the outdoor copper tub, and enjoy some fresh air and R&R in a beautiful setting. We ventured out to Mattole Beach one afternoon, which isn't far but takes ~30 mins because of the road conditions, but was definitely worth the trip. Daisy was a fantastic host. She met us when we arrived, showed us the ins and outs of the place, and was very communicative throughout the whole process. We would love to stay here again, even with the long trek to get out there.

  • Daisy is very thoughtful and cares about her guest’s comfort!

    Hubbard2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • The tower is on a beautiful hillside near a winery and small apple orchard. The windows open to let the warm afternoon breeze in. The copper tub was lovely. The drive in was long and winding (and gorgeous!), but mostly paved, if pretty bumpy. Our Jetta was just fine. Definitely glad we brought backpacks and wore sneakers. The hike up the hill isn’t for the out-of-shape, but is only about 5 minutes. Beautiful retreat, we wish we could have stayed longer!

    Katie2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Daisy's property and cabin are heavenly. Venturing here will take you FAR from the hustle and allow you to focus within and gain perspective on yourself and your life. The area surrounding is an explorer's dream - magically isolated nature, dramatic views and lovely people. Daisy is a fantastic host who is communicative and detail-oriented. Highly recommended for anyone *Especially for artists and nature lovers!*

    David2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend staying here! Not only is the tower beautiful and so full of character but the stories that come with it give it a whole other experience. It was unique and out in such a beautiful part of California, perfect for getting in touch with yourself and nature.

    Brittney2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • It's called the Lost Tower for a reason. You are in your own secluded oasis with nature and views for miles. Watch the sunset in the outdoor copper tub while the deer eat apples around you. Or games at the table overlooking the Lost Coast. It's a bit of a hike to get to, but if you carry a backpack it's easy. The kitchen had everything we needed and the skincare amenities were made locally. If you want to get away and I mean getaway, the Lost Tower is a great choice.

    Nicole2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • The Tower is a beautiful and eclectic retreat. The description is accurate so be prepared to hike up a short trail (with beautiful art installations for you to muse on as you ascend - be sure to read the description of the art commission in the small book on the desk). We used the amazing copper tub out back, saw deer frolicking in the meadow, a family of quails 2 evenings in a row snacking on seeds and bugs, chatted with the resident squirrels, ate some perfectly ripe and crisp apples, and read a bit about the fascinating Tanoak tree standing tall above the building (check out the book on the desk to learn about this underappreciated California oak!). Great homebase to explore 8-mile beach to the north, and the north end of the Lost Coast Trail/Mattole Beach.

This is a tiny house in the redwoods, built by an artist as a spiritual retreat. The building is built on sacred geometry ideas, and sits perfectly placed on the cardinal directions. It is private and promises introspection and creativity. This is a perfect place for a soul connected romantic weekend or a writers get away. Sit on the patio amongst the redwoods while you sip your morning coffee. Soak in the claw foot tub and let the stress melt away with the birds singing. Dog friendly.
There is no place like this. Every detail has been creatively inspired with the intent of promoting a sense of spiritual connection and peace. The redwoods that surround the home are quiet and inviting. There is a kitchenette with a mini fridge, sink, coffee pot, electric tea kettle, microwave and electric cooktop. There is a deliciously comfortable queen sized memory foam bed upstairs in the loft. There is a half bath inside and a uniquely elegant outdoor bath with a claw foot tub/shower that allows you to be in nature while you relax. The home is built almost entirely out of reclaimed old growth redwood. The design is inspired by spiritual sanctuaries or places of worship. There is no tv or wifi because the home is meant to draw one closer to their spiritual connection and away from the busy world. I provide yoga mats and a library and encourage their use. Fluffy soft bathrobes are provided. There is an essential oil diffuser to set the mood and the soaps and shampoos are natural and organic. The deck is an amazing place for yoga in the morning. The property is far from neighbors and road noise but still close to town. There is total privacy and quite. Destination spots nearby are the Avenue of the Giants, The lost coast, Ferndale, Centerville beach and the Eel river.
The property is about a mile from downtown Fortuna and 2 miles from highway 101, however, it is isolated and one feels that they are far in the countryside.
  • Love the place would definitely book again!

Bright, comfortable, and clean off-grid home in a private setting on a ranch near the Lost Coast. Enjoy hikes around the ranch, visit the Lost Coast and enjoy the cozy house. The farmhouse is best suited to those who enjoy rustic living are are ready to build a fire in the wood stove and start the generator if necessary!
The home is heated by a wood stove and one bedroom has a gas heater. Firewood is provided. But be ready to build a fire if it's cold! The property is off the grid and powered by solar panels and a back-up generator. During extended periods of rain in the winter, it may be necessary to run the generator to charge the batteries. Gas is provided for the generator. But you must be willing to start and monitor the generator. The property is a working ranch. We may need to come by to tend to the animals and keep the systems on the property up and running. We will respect the privacy of our guests in the case that we need to come to the property. The property and most of the larger area does not have cell service. There is a landline phone in the house, and good wifi. If your cell phone supports wifi calling, you can use your cell phone to make calls at the house.
The farmhouse is about a mile from Petrolia, where you can find the general store and post office. Please note that there are NO restaurants or bars in Petrolia. The general store is great for basic supplies and does have gas, but we recommend doing your main grocery shopping and filling up your gas tank before making the trip. The store closes at 5:30 on most days. There is a hopping farmers market on Sundays at the Mattole Valley Community Center just a mile down the road. The property is a one hour drive from Ferndale or a one-and-a half hour drive from Redway/Garberville. It's a long drive on a rough road with only the spottiest of cell service. Your navigation probably won't work so please plan ahead to get directions and make check-in arrangements ahead of time.
  • Beautiful property and short drive to Lost Coast. Would love to go back!

    William2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Great "off the grid" cabin.....quiet, clean, with all the touches to make your stay comfortable!

  • Deva and family were extremely welcoming and the place surpassed our expectations. We had such a wonderful stay. Having Deva’s kids show us the house — and learning they grew up there and that their parents designed and built it — was a fantastic way to start. It is a very special place and being entrusted with it felt like a special gift. The house is brighter than we expected with gorgeous views and a well-appointed kitchen. Even the bath tub has a beautiful view and my husband and I each enjoyed reading our respective books in the tub to the sounds of silence and birdcalls. We hiked the hill on the ample property the first evening, scrambling straight up past crisis crossing cattle paths. It affords a gorgeous view. On New Year’s Eve day we took the short drive to Mattole Beach and hiked the beach, then came back for sunset at the outdoor fire pit and more cooking, eating, resting, reading. Such a calm and beautiful place and Deva was gracious and easily reachable. Thank you to your whole family for sharing !

    Leora2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I just loved our stay here. The property is even more beautiful than we expected and the house was very comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed. The pictures just don't do the place justice, it is a magical spot. The roads once you get off the 101 are pretty rough on a regular car but definitely do-able, just slow going, so be prepared for that part. Well worth it though!

    Bethany2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • No words can explain the serenity and beauty of the house and property! Off-grid with lots of privacy and a wonderful host that makes sure you are completely taken care of! An absolute must stay for those looking to get away from it all and take a big step back from the fast pace of life! You MUST stay to truly understand!

    Courtney2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at the farmhouse was a really cool experience— think Anne of Green Gables but with good WiFi. The house is very comfortable and cozy and had everything we needed for a relaxing long weekend. The property is beautiful; I wanted to hike the whole route but knew rain was coming. The hosts took good care of us and made sure we had everything we needed. They also gave great tips for things to do in the area that we would not have known about otherwise. I hope to come back again!

It offers one full sized bed, a bathroom, a kitchen with seating, and a large sun room with additional seating.

There is a small store that offers the basics, mostly canned goods and frozen boxed food, and some drinks. There are no restaurants or bars in Petrolia, so please bring any food and beverage items for your stay. There is also a gas pump at the store, however the store closes at 5 pm, and you cannot get gas after that. On Sundays, there is a farmer’s market open from 10am-1pm at the local community center where an organic breakfast is served and various venders sell their goods.
  • This is probably the closest you can stay to the Mattole Beach trail head without pitching a tent. Taylor's place is in an excellent location, quiet, and perfect for a couple looking for a launching point for the Lost Coast. Taylor is a very thoughtful and considerate host.

  • The perfect weekend getaway. A quiet & cozy space in a beautiful setting. Ideal for those seeking solitude.

    Jenny2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Loved it so much we to return!

    Ryan2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Taylor was easy to communicate with and replied promptly to questions. The studio is simple and very quaint and is a perfect place to stay to explore the lost coast. Her suggestion to check out the Sunday farmers market in Petrolia was also great, we really enjoyed this.

    Jeremy2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This lovely studio is retro fitted in an existing barn and is super cute. The decorations give it a homey feel and the full size oven, burners and pans make cooking easy. The bed was comfy, and there was even a fan to keep us cool. The sun room is a lovely place to enjoy my meal and relax. The beach is a 2 minute drive and lovely Petrolia is not far either. Make sure to stay for the farmers market on Sundays.

    Ryan2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • What a spectacular location, a very short distance from the north end of the Lost Coast, a very wild and beautiful beach. Taylor's place is comfortable and well-appointed with a stove, washer and dryer and is clean as well as quiet. We were really happy at this spot. Thanks so much for being so helpful with getting us checked in and being communicative.

    Liv2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely, clean, sunny place with friendly hosts, easy checkin, and calm natural location minutes from the coast. It doesn't get much better than that. Highlights: - Very friendly hosts, inc. next-door friend and his bonus kitten (!). They left me a note with advice to go to the farmer's market in Petrolia on Sunday (recommended). - Location is a 4-min drive from the Mattole trailhead of the Lost Coast trail. The coast is unbelievably gorgeous, and you can't stay much closer to the trail unless you're actually camping. - Studio is sunny and has a calm, clean feel. All the coziness of a cabin, but with all the amenities you'd need for a longer stay, inc. a well-outfitted kitchen with refrigerator and gas stove, bathroom, and books/trail maps. Good to know: - The roads going out towards the coast can get rough. I drove an SUV and was glad I did. Drive during the daylight and be ready for the drive to take longer than you think. - The actual town of Petrolia is very cute, but also very small, so you will want to bring food & other necessary supplies with you just in case the general store isn't open.

    Emily2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, modern, rustic design to this cozy studio. A very well stocked and usable kitchen, functional yet small bathroom, and great location (1.4 miles to Mattole Beach). Taylor and Alex were very friendly, helpful and attentive with some maintenance issues they put their full attention into fixing. A great place for a single person or couple who are looking to get away from the big city and even small local tourist towns and just want to relax quietly and do some hiking around the Lost Coast area.

Imagine enjoying a cup of tea on your back deck while listening to birds chirp in the redwood trees and cows moo in from the pastures. The cottage is cute as a bug! Decorated in a shabby chic decor with Victorian Ferndale as the theme. Cozy, clean and feels like home! Electric fireplace and oil heater for warmth on those foggy days. About the Historic Victorian Village of Ferndale Become Part of a Different World "Tucked away between the California Redwoods and Humboldt Bay, the Victorian Village of Ferndale is a magical town that blends the best of the past and the present, all amidst the backdrop of Northern California's magnificent Lost Coast. Visitors come here for our fantastically preserved Victorian era architecture and stunning coastal scenery. But what they fall in love with is the feeling. Ferndale is more than a pretty picture: It's a place where small-town Americana is alive and well, where kids stay out playing after dusk and neighbors are quick to lend a helping hand. It's a haven for artists and creative-minded folks who left behind the fast pace of the suburbs or city to follow a dream, make a difference and lead a fuller life. It's a special town that we're proud to call home, whether our family has been here for five years or five generations. Whether you're drawn to historic architecture, want to explore our incredible coastline and forests, or are simply looking for an escape from the everyday world, we invite you to discover Northern California and the Redwood Coast's best kept secret - and fall in love with Ferndale."--Enjoy Magazine
  • Great little cottage tucked away in their backyard! I didn’t have the feel that I was in someone’s backyard, but that I had my own space. Thanks Tracy!

  • Enjoyed the space, cute cottage.

    Zarana2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Nice guest house, and private area. It had driveway parking, and its about 20 to 30 min away from some awesome redwood hiking trails.

  • This is a darling cottage with an exceptional location in Victorian Ferndale. It far exceeded our expectations. The bed is very comfortable and the decor is amazing. There was even a bottle of wine ! Great hostess! We walked to the village from our cottage. We Highly recommend this property! You will love your stay.

  • Beautiful and amazing place that was perfect for my boyfriend, me and our medium-sized dog! Very private, fenced in location with views of a beautiful field with obviously filled with happy cows and deer if you catch them. Excellent hosts: welcoming, friendly, accomodating, quick with replies and downright good people. Warning: the bed is extremely comfortable, even though the picturesc town is walking distance you may get stuck in this downright homey cottage!

    Jennifer2018-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • What a cute cottage! We loved staying in Ferndale at Tracy’s cottage. It was exactly as described, and has so many cute touches! The backyard is a very tranquil space and allowed our dog to run around and stare at the cows in the neighboring field. Visiting in January, it was a bit chilly outdoors, but the space heater provides warmed the cottage right up! If traveling to Ferndale again, I would definitely stay here. It’s perfect for a couple looking for a quiet get away.

    Emma2018-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Hosts were delightful! Cottage very nice and perfect for a romantic couple! Downtown close and Victorian Inn was great for bar and dinner!

    Robert2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Tracy is genuinely the sweetest host with so much hospitality. Her home is absolutely immaculate and has so many unique and traditional victorian touches to it. This airbnb is every bit of a "home away from home",, clean, comfortable, modern and traditional are the first words that come to mind. My husband and I enjoy making meals together in the beautiful kitchen that is updated with top of the line appliances and fully furnished with every cooking accessory that you can imagine. I have 3 children that enjoy watching the deers every morning, playing outside everyday is always a new adventure for them and it is an experience that we will appreciate and remember forever. The area is absolutely beautiful, safe, secluded, organic, and the people are very friendly. I give tracy and her home a 10 out of 10 and I will ALWAYS use this home as my first option for renting an airbnb in humboldt county.

COVID 19: We are closed. If you have stayed with us in the past, please inquire about exceptions. Meanwhile, we isolating, working in the garden and reading cookbooks. Reservations for May & for the rest of 2020 may be canceled up to 48 hours before arrival with our promise of a full refund (outside of Airbnb's charges, which we cannot control). After 48 hours, we will charge for the food supplies we purchased for your visit. Stay safe and well.
Larger-than-you expect room with good lighting both at desk and for reading in bed. View of wooded hillsides, rose garden, pastures. You will hear ocean roar and birds sing. Walk up ridge, to the beach or explore 80 acres of our wilderness park (not a working farm). Delicious food. You'll eat well and sleep well. Rocking chairs, many places to curl up with a book. Yes, you can use our laundry (that is also where your bathroom is located). Victorian village 4 miles east. Country farmhouse, informal, cozy, not much changed in 70 years.
We're in rural small ranch and farm country, one mile from the Pacific Ocean. We have no visible (or audible) neighbors. Four miles east is the small (1, 400 population) Victorian village of Ferndale. Our specific property is vintage family, comforting, peaceful, quiet. Our food is very, very good, fresh, homemade (including mayonnaise, bread, ice cream, etc.). We are Superhosts, but here's what's bothered some guests: the bed in this room is a double bed, not a queen. In fog, WiFi can be dicey. Cell phones often don't work (texting does). In "weather," the house creaks. The bathroom is not next door to your room. There are no curtains on the bedroom windows ( it is a private valley). The 4-mile road to our house from Ferndale is a country road, full of wildlife after dark. The 140-year-old French piano is out of tune. We do have comfy beds, good fresh food home-cooked, amazing views, no ambient light or noise. You will eat very well and sleep very well. Regardless of your age, think of this as a visit to country grandparents who will spoil you and fix you pancakes in the middle of the night if you want them.
  • I love waking up in the morning looking out those windows and smelling the wonderful breakfast John is cooking. So peaceful and cozy. Soothes my soul.

    Teresa2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • After a long day of driving, we could not have wished for any better hospitality! Loved dinner and breakfast!! Wendy and John have a beautiful place and are excellent hosts!

  • If you are looking for a rustic, peaceful stop on your coastal trip and want to feel like part of the family, this is a great place for you. The house is nestled in its own little valley a bit out of the small town of Ferndale and the room I had looked out onto a lovely garden (with some blooms even in February), the emu's pen and a field where two alpaca graze. Louie the dog happily accepts pats and stomach skritches. Wendy and John were very welcoming and were open to varying levels of interaction, everything from chatting in the kitchen while Wendy cooked dinner (a yummy clam chowder) to letting me feed to emu to not intruding when I went to my room to do some work. Dinner (rare to find at an AirBnB) and breakfast are family style (and tasty, including John's homemade bread and homemade caramel sauce for the ice cream). The room I had had a private bath but on the other end of the house (the other room available via AirBnB has its own bathroom believe) -- not a problem at all (see feeling welcomed as part of the family, above), but something to be aware of. I really enjoyed my stay and meeting Wendy and John (and the critters).

  • I wish I could give my stay with Wendy and John more than 5 stars. They were thoughtful, interesting hosts who made us feel at home right away. They cooked us fresh crab and told us stories about the beautiful area - their local knowledge is amazing. I've already told my family that they have to plan their next road trip down the California coast around staying in Ferndale just so they can encounter Wendy and John's lovely hospitality. Thank you!

  • Beautiful spot with lovely hosts and wonderful food. Could definitely have spent more time here!

  • Waldner farm is a gem in the heart of the Redwoods. The property is beautiful, the home is cozy and inviting, and the food is divine. But the best part is the company John and Wendy provide. They are truly wonderful people who will make your stay feel like you are part of the family.

    Ayana2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • I've been going to Waldner Farm since long before airbnb was a twinkle in its founders' eye. It is my favorite place to visit. I'm not a big traveler. I like comfort and peace and quiet -- and beauty. The view of the big meadow protected by steep hills covered in forest is reason enough to go. Plus where else do you get a delicious full breakfast and an excellent full dinner cooked for you. And of course I love Wendy and John. Never mind that she's a lifelong best friend, she' s more knowledgeable about the area than anyone else and when prompted will tell wonderful stories about it. Being there is a lovely experience, one you are likely to want to repeat. Most people end up wishing they had stayed longer.

    Sue2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy & John’s place is the experience of visiting family. The warm cozy fire, homemade meals, great conversation and stories about the town makes this Airbnb a memorable experience. The county views are breathtaking. We recommend staying at least two nights to take in all the beauty. We are looking forward to our next visit with Wendy & John!

  • We stopped over for one night on our road trip. The accommodation was great, spacious, close to town and spotlessly clean. We were two couples travelling and the layout worked brilliantly for that. We travelled into town for a meal the small town is very quaint.

Enjoy exploring the charming village of Ferndale, full of quaint and quirky shops, delicious cuisine, wonderful art galleries, and many historic sites. We are surrounded by meadows with dairy cows, horses, mountain views and a cool ocean breeze. The Pacific Ocean is only a few miles away and magnificent forests surround rolling farmlands. The beautiful North Coast is perfect for sightseeing, relaxing, hiking, and exploring. Of note, Ferndale was the location for the movie The Majestic and many others. Its beauty and charm has lent itself to many filmmaking projects, events and awards. In fact, Forbes magazines named Ferndale one of "America's Prettiest Towns." It is an ideal getaway from the busy modern world and never fails to enchant visitors. Most people agree, coming to our wonderful Victorian village is like taking a trip back to a simpler time, but with a splash of modern eclecticism that makes the experience truly unique. Ferndale also hosts the annual Humboldt County Fair in August-September and is the last leg of the world famous Kinetic Sculpture Race on Memorial Day weekend. The Humboldt County Fairgrounds are only one block away from the Red Barn Cottage, easy walking distance. Please note that during the summer the Fairgrounds has various activities, especially during the Humboldt County Fair weeks, such as Horse Racing and there will be loudspeaker noise. There has been also some motorcycle racing and truck events, so you will hear some extra noise when these activities are taking place. It has only occurred a few times. We are a fair distance away but wanted to give a heads up that summer is the time for these activities to take place. Ferndale is also known as Cream City, because of the many dairy farms that surround our area.
  • The Red Barn was very clean, but cozy. We felt like we were staying at a friend's guest house because they went to great lengths to make sure we were comfortable in every way. The laundry room, extra soft blankets, slippers, and heated mattress was an unexpected treat. We will certainly recommend this place to our friends!

  • Wonderful place. Peaceful and not in the middle of town. The special touches (farm fresh eggs for breakfast) and a comfortable bed made the stay perfect. We were in town for a concert at the Old Steeple. 2 minute drive and a nice venue. We will be back again.

Beautifully remodeled rural home nestled in the remote Mattole Valley on California's Lost Coast. Modern home of nearly 2,000 sq. feet with natural wood throughout that has three bedrooms, two baths, a fully stocked kitchen and pantry, decks, new beds and linens, propane grill and backyard. Quiet neighborhood near other cabins allows for solitude, beach walks, swimming at the river, or enjoying views of stars and the Milky Way at night.
Stay in comfort while you explore nearby beaches, the Mattole River, and trails in the Kings Range National Conservation Area. Lost Coast Cottage features a large master bedroom with a sitting area, its own private bath with six-foot tub and shower, a private deck, and new organic latex king-size mattress with all cotton linens; a second bedroom has a new premium Tempurpedic queen mattress on a sleigh bed frame; a third bedroom, on a slightly lower level, has a king-size platform futon bed, its own outside entrance with covered porch, as well as direct access inside to the house. An inflatable queen bed can also be set up in this room. The home's second bathroom is centrally located near the laundry area and has a five-foot tub with shower. The large kitchen has a full-size gas range and is supplied with pots, pans, dishes, spices, a well-stocked pantry, as well as a coffee beans, a grinder, electric drip, pour-over or French press for your morning coffee. The dining area is part of an open floor plan that includes the living room and wood stove. The house is about 2,000 sq feet. We remodeled using local redwood, Vermont hickory, American oak, and other hardwoods. The Cottage has vaulted cedar ceilings, two covered decks, and a third deck with a propane grill, as well as a backyard (not fenced) and front yard. Our water is raw, tested and safe, coming from a pristine underground spring up a hill nearby. The Lost Coast region is remote, dark at night, and generally quiet during the day. There is no cell phone service nearby, but a landline and Wi-Fi are provided. If you enjoy bird watching, stargazing, swimming, exploring, or peace and quiet - you'll enjoy the Lost Coast Cottage. Steelhead Trout fishing season is January 1-March 31.
Petrolia is situated at the northern end of the Lost Coast and is accessed by a winding, bumpy two-lane country road. Petrolia is about 90 minutes from Eureka, two hours from Garberville, and three hours from Redwood National Park. Humboldt County is beautiful and there are many hidden gems. The Mattole River Valley has lovely pastoral views, river banks to explore, and miles of beaches far from any major roads and crowds. The small community is tight-knit and very friendly. If you're coming to Humboldt County to walk among giant redwoods, note the driving distance from Petrolia.

Escape from the ordinary! Take the spectacular drive to the Petrolia Guest House on the remote 'Lost Coast' of Humboldt County, California. Formally known as ‘The Lost Inn, we are located in the hamlet of Petrolia, just a short walk to the general store which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Unfortunately, at this time there are no restaurants in our town. For those folks who would like to dine at nice restaurants, you can take one of the most scenic drives to Ferndale, which is less than one hour away. For those who would like to meet some of the local folks, there is a Sunday Cafe and farmer's market at the community center which is a short walk from our guest suite. We offer a spacious three room suite in the front part of our home, with its own private entrance. It has its own garden with a lovely pastoral view. There is a large bedroom, sun room/bedroom and a glassed in kitchenette porch that overlooks the garden. The bedroom includes a large velvet couch as well as a miniature antique piano. We are one mile from the pristine Mattole River that wends its way through our valley. It affords visitors lovely swimming holes through the summer and fall, and canoeing, river rafting and catch and release fishing through the winter months. We are just 6 miles from the Lost Coast beach which offers tide pools and beach combing. Watching whales and sunsets are a popular pastime. The Lost Coast Beach happens to be the northern end of the Kings Range National Conservation Area and the trail head of the popular 25 mile Lost Coast hiking trail. This trail is one of the few coastal wilderness hiking experiences in the United States. For those wishing to take a shorter hike there is one on the Mill Creek trail which wanders through a lovely forest, which would take about one hour....Also another popular walk is to the abandoned lighthouse which about 7 miles round trip. It is just a short walk to our Mattole Valley Community Center across the street from the elementary school. It offers several weekly classes in yoga and chi gong. Guests could also make an appointment with several very accomplished massage therapists and physical therapists. Please note: We are pet-friendly, and will allow your pet to stay on the glassed-in (kitchen) porch next to the bedroom. The dogs are not allowed in the bedroom as other guests may be allergic to pet dander.... We also have one child-friendly cat and one small dog. We are also wheelchair accessible and have wi-fi available. Some of our guests visit us touring on bikes or motorcycles since we are located on a scenic road loop, about 75 miles long (Rte. 211), between the Victorian village of Ferndale and Humboldt Redwoods State Park just off Hwy 101. Please note that we now have an ATM machine in the Petrolia general store. The three roads in and out of Petrolia can be a bit rough, so drive carefully.
We are located in the downtown area of Petrolia which consists of a General store, a post office and a fire station.....which one can walk to.
  • We had a wonderful one night stay at Phil & Gail's guest house and enjoyed the drive in and being off the grid for a bit. The beds were very comfortable and the decor and small details throughout, including the garden, were fabulous. Plenty of space for two adults and two small children. Best advise I can give is to come prepared for the remote locale. The local market has a very limited supply. Your best bet is to stop in Ferndale or Fortuna on your way in and plan for simple meals. Don't forget some wine/beer or hot tea to enjoy while taking in the sunset or gazing at the stars. We drove out to the beach for a bit, but otherwise just enjoyed our time at the house before heading out to Shelter Cove the next day.

    Dianna2019-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely garden view and amazing view of stars at night. A great destination for serious stargazers. We really enjoyed our interactions with Gail. Yummy breakfast at the Sunday Farmer's Market and good chance to interact with folks in the Petrolia community. This location is great for solitude and getting far away from the outside world.

  • Photos don’t do this spot justice! The place is decorated in a lovely quirky style and is maximally cozy. Fantastic hospitality and lots of privacy in the separate quarters we resided in - and the kitchen had everything we needed! Pet friendly too :) We had a lovely and restful stay.

  • We would have liked to meet Phil because we were so impressed with how helpful, thoughtful, kind and responsive Gail was. In response to a minor inconvenience, Gail was immediately available and so helpful in her response. We truely felt well served and well-hosted. The grounds are beautiful and the setting in the green scenic valley was just stunning. The floor-to-ceiling windows on one side of the house made us feel we were living outside while tucked away inside a cozy cabin. We will definitely visit again.

    Connie2019-04-16T00:00:00Z

  • Phil and Gail were phenomenal hosts. They were friendly and helpful but discrete and we felt like we had privacy. Their place has a lot of character and is in a phenomenal location....a good jumping off location for the lost coast or a quiet getaway. Please remember to bring your own food as this is a remote location but you will otherwise have everything you need to enjoy it properly.

  • Many many thanks to Phil and Gail putting me up at their Lost Inn Guesthouse. Staying there was a highlight of my journey. I loved the kitchen/sunroom; the gorgeous garden with so many beautiful roses and dahlias; the playful, whimsical, and artistic decor. And the bed, THE BED, was so very comfortable. They both were wonderful, helpful, informative hosts!

The home is as depicted in the picture and it is warm and comfortable with many thoughtful amenities including the comfortable bed, furniture, writing desk, covered deck and chocolates! He is a gracious host and quick to give your tips and hints depending on what you are looking for.

  • Brian is a really nice guy. Very thoughtful with the cabin laid out immaculately with everything u could need- hot drinks, tourist maps, cooking utensils, shampoos etc. It’s pretty much a treehouse amongst the pine trees. The bedroom and veranda view is amongst the trees. Very peaceful. Highly recommended. 👍🏻

  • What you expect when you rent a tree house! Beautiful, secluded and very close to Avenue of the giants!! We had fruit from Brian’s trees with our dinner. The beauty was so relaxing!

  • What an amazing place. The location the views are to die for. The house itself is fantastic and a really great place to hang out and relax. So many thoughtful touches make it really welcoming. Brian is a great host and we cannot recommend this highly enough. An absolute gem

    Simon2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderfully remote location, yet reasonable close to many things! The location can be a bit challenging though, with narrow roads and an address that Google Maps can get wrong. Follow the link in AirBnB or use "345 Thomas Drive" and all will be fine, but enter "345 Thomas Road" as shown on your confirmation and Google will take you about 1/4-mile down the road past Brian's place. Once here, I didn't want to leave however! Brian is an excellent, very personable host. The fruit trees loaded and ripe for picking. And while there is no real kitchen, light cooking is easily accomplished with a microwave, hotplate, toaster oven, large refrigerator, coffee maker, etc. The stairs leading to the loft/bedroom are easily negotiated as they are carpeted and quite a gentle rise. The bathroom that is downstairs is large and full of light. The large couch and chair in the sitting area were quite comfortable. All in all, when it came time to check out, I really didn't want to! Thank you Brian for sharing such a delightful space...

We offer visitors to Humboldt Redwoods a unique camping experience in a clean, cozy self-contained 23 foot trailer at the end of a road with a gate for privacy and security. Trailer has everything needed for couples, or small families. Our tiny town of Weott is beautifully situated surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and on The Avenue of the Giants. Miles of hiking trails are within a short walk from us, as well as the beautiful Eel River. Perfect for kayaking, swimming, and fishing.
My partner, dog, cat, and I live in house next to trailer. We are glad to give advice on hiking, swimming, kayaking, restaurants and activities nearby.
We live on the end of a nice quiet little street right in the middle of tiny Weott. There are 2 churches, a post office, store and school in our little town. The main attraction is the redwoods and river. Our neighborhood is very quiet and we have a gate for privacy and security.
  • Great little trailer right in the middle of the redwoods. Highly recommended and I would definitely stay here again. Keep in mind that it is a small space. I’d recommend no more than two adults.

  • We couldn't have had a more magical time than staying at this deluxe trailer in the redwoods. Theresa and Chris went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The bed is comfortable and the shower and kitchen were roomy considering it is a trailer. Would definitely recommend this airbnb for a unique stay. I hope to return some day!

  • Wonderful place with a breathtaking view.

    Jessica2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This house was worth every hour driving and every penny paid for the excellent view and chance to explore all the little ocean coves. It was cozy, clean, and spacious. The beds were comfy, the shower was hot, the kitchen was great and there was even a washing machine there if you need it. It’s best to bring your own food but there is a general store before you get into town and a tiny store in town, as well as a few restaurants that have various closed hours. The walk down to the cliffs and the ocean view is only a few minutes and then you can walk or drive along the coast and enjoy various entrances to see seals, black sand beach, rocks, giant waves, and even a lighthouse. During the spring it was extremely windy and cloudy but beautiful! It was the perfect impromptu getaway. I’d love to come back over the summer but for the price in the spring, it’s perfect!

    Maria2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great place close to the ocean and good food!

3 GOOD REASONS FOR RENTING THIS HIDEAWAY RIGHT NOW: 1. We're taking extra precautions to make it as safe & stressless as possible....sanitizing everything we can see & think of that gets touched by human hands: light switches, door nobs and handles, toilet flushers, furniture, appliances...ETC. (We don't want this virus any more than you do!) :-) 2. The hot tub ALWAYS gets sanitized between EVERY group of guests 3. Your comfort, peace, & safety are our primary concerns
Here are 7 more reasons for renting this hideaway: 1.) You can create an unforgettable experience at a forgettable price. 2.) Every single view (inside & out) is a photo op. 3.) Your neighbors want the exact same thing as much as you do - PRIVACY, PEACE, QUIET, BEAUTY, and a PERSONAL experience. 4.) It's a great place to hide out if you need some peace of mind combined with beauty and serenity. 5.) It's hidden in the healing energy of redwoods (& has good parking!) 6.) It's super close to town AND... 7.) I want to STAY a super host! (That means I aim to please - ALWAYS!) PS...we are providing a basket full of sanitizing options from conventional products (like Lysol, Hand sanitizer, and Pinesol) to green products (such as vinegar, alcohol, and soap). We are also providing gloves and paper towels as well :-) This strategically tucked in and hidden home actually invites you to enjoy the lush, overgrown forest of the West Coast, while still being only less than a mile (an easy walking distance) from the heart of Fortuna. You will be able to get warm and relaxed in the outdoor hot tub that gets emptied and refilled with fresh, clean water for each and every guest. To conserve energy we keep the hot tub turned off between guests. If you are intending to use the hot tub we would love a head's up and we will turn it on for you in advance of your arrival. The little cottage is right next door to this bigger house and there is going to be a vintage trailer (for VERY up-scaled camping) tucked under the trees on the same property…which may or may not be rented during your stay. All three rentals are private and have their own parking spaces and private entries. It is very easy to actually enjoy total privacy while you reside in one of the options…however you may pass each other while using the great outdoors and parking lot. The insides are totally insulated and sounds stay inside…and a privacy screen is provided for your hot-tubbing experiences :-) Please, please, please read all the way through this One really awesome advantage of having these three living spaces on one piece of property is that retreats, reunions, people attending the same events, etc. can all stay in the same location. There are enough beds to accommodate 9 - 10 people comfortably (and 5 cars without trailers). As I am sitting here, looking out my windows while typing this up, I am reminded that we are nestled in the heart of a playground for wildlife. We often hear of and experience sightings ranging from the families of deer who live here to raccoons, bears, mountain lions, and skunks. For that reason we encourage you to be conscious of your small pet's whereabouts during your stay. Being that this house sits squarely in the center of a clearing in the woods we feel it is incumbent upon us to tell you that, although beautiful and sunny most of the day, it is definitely shaded in the early mornings and early evenings. We have an outdoor heater so that the deck can be enjoyed year 'round :-) Please know that under the gorgeous canopy of greenery comes several other territorial peculiarities. We get spiders and webs (but spray with chrysanthemum oil once a month), we get dust and redwood droppings (needles and branches), and we also get moss, mold, slugs, bugs, mushrooms, and all that comes with living in the moist, lush forests near the coast. We have gone to great lengths to make this house as allergen free and environmentally friendly to the best of our ability with the resources we have had available to us. We have put wool carpet in bedrooms, hardwood in the hallway, use pure lavender in the diffusers, and provide pet blankets for the seating areas, etc. In fact...IF you have allergies PLEASE let us know in advance. We don't NEED to put lavender in the diffusers...we can use other oils or none at all. We can't read your mind so we have to depend on you to tell us. And please don't book this location if mold and fungus are an issue for you! This house is literally in the redwoods, redwoods hold moisture in the air...mushrooms are abundant, mold and moss grows prolifically, and mildew happens rather quickly. We do all the right things to keep it dry inside, ie: good insulation, forced air heating, dehumidifying routinely, etc...nevertheless - damp is in the air...always. Parking and comings and goings may appear a little tricky at first but is actually very easy to navigate. There is room, in the summer months, to park a trailer or large RV on the flat at the bottom of the hill but there are no hooks ups. The flat is unavailable during the rainy season because it becomes a mud bog. We don't want these things we say to discourage you from coming, but we also don't want you to experience any potentially negative surprises! :-) The bottom line, as our guests, is that you will be living in our ongoing art project. Every single angle and view is designed to be a photo op and a comfort zone for you :-) (except for the ones that are out of our control in the neighborhood). We know, and want you to know that we know, that our rentals are sooo not perfect…BUT we put a whole lot of time, energy, and effort into making them comfortable, clean, convenient, and candy for your eyes :-) We hope you will enjoy your stay in every way :-)
We think our immediate neighborhood is special because, well, there is nothing really "special" about it at all. :-) The house is located behind the beautiful park and rodeo grounds on a meandering, quiet, country road where all the beauty is in the natural scenery of the surrounding and magnificent redwoods...so don't expect extraordinary architecture, landscaped yards, or street lights here, just expect ordinary, middle class, rural living spaces where some are much worse or better than others in an extraordinary valley. A short 5 minute drive or a 15 minute walk gets you to the heart of the bustling little town of Fortuna where you can get all of your living needs and desires met at grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, auto supply stores, gyms, antique co-ops, and gas stations. I have a collection of menus and venues and must-see locations available in the house for you to peruse through :-) What we think is the most special about Fortuna is the fact that it is a fabulous and temperate "home base" for all the events and seasons of Humboldt County. It is just inland enough to sport a warmer, dryer climate than the more northern, western, and coastal towns and is also centrally located to be between a 15 minute and an hour's drive to the historical architecture and events that are abundant and unique to Humboldt. And speaking of which...there is sooooo much to take in and enjoy here in Humboldt…check the calendar before you get here to see if you can take part in local events like the Fortuna Rodeo, Humboldt Beer Fest, Art and Wine in the Park, and the Apple Harvest Festival, Auto Expo. or the Benbow Arts and Crafts Faire in Garberville! A visit to Fern Canyon, Agate Beach, and Trinidad Head as well as a visit to Humboldt Redwoods State Park are other incredible sights to behold. (BTW, that particular park has the largest remaining stand of redwoods in the world.) And/or you could take a scenic drive down the Avenue of the Giants via Highway 101, hike the trailheads, or take a boat down the Eel River! Additional trips within 30 minutes of the property could include Old Town Eureka, the Victorian Village of Ferndale, Sequoia Park Zoo, Loleta Cheese Factory, and Bear River Casino...or simply a leisurely walk in our woods or a vigorous hike on the well maintained hills of our very own enchanting Rohner Park.
  • The pictures tell it all! There are actually three sleeping rooms. Our Grandson enjoyed the smaller on with the pullout bed while our Grand daughter stayed in the larger room with the trundle bed and it's own bathroom, she was really excited about her room!

  • 5 stars all around. I rented Pauline’s place to celebrate my birthday with my best friend and our expectations were far exceeded! I would stay again and recommend my friends and family to stay here. Great decor in all the living spaces and such a nice relaxing atmosphere indoors and out. Loved the hot tub too. Thanks for everything Pauline, you’re the best!

    Hayley2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Pauline's place was way better than I imagined! The decor, amenities and ambiance of the place was interesting, intriguing and soothing. Definitely will recommend to friends and family

    Rachael2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • Pauline’s Hillside Retreat was everything we wished for and more – within easy reach of good restaurants and spectacular destinations, situated in a beautiful outdoor environment, sumptuously artful and exotic interiors, fully equipped for quiet relaxation and intimate home-cooked meals, and everywhere the spirit of an owner filled with love, nurturing, and joie de vivre. Thank you, Pauline!

  • I am not a frequent Air BnB user, as i currently clean vacation rentals myself. However, this stay was one of the most wonderful vacations i’ve had in quite some time. Even though we are local, the holidays are a rough time so my partner and I made a last minute decision to get away for a night, and wow, we were so lucky. Pauline has personally curated one of the most serene, welcoming homes i have ever encountered, and as i said, i have cleaned many. The level of detail that she has brought into the home is what i would consider perfect, as you walk from room to room you can truly feel how much care and attention she has devoted to each space. The holidays can be a dark time for many families, but this opportunity was a beacon of light and warmth. I 100% recommend staying at this accommodation for anyone passing through, or even local and trying to get away for a minute. We will most assuredly be back, as soon as possible. Thank you again Pauline. What a lovely experience!

    Hazel2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • I have stayed in some amazing airbnb's, on ocean bluffs, across from beaches, and perched high in the Sierras, but this one is my favorite. It's more of a retreat than a home, carefully decorated and filled with items to encourage you to slow down, unplug and reconnect. A perfect place to spend a quiet and restful stay, if you enjoy things like meditation, tarot and eastern mysticism this is the place for you! Pauline is an amazing host, she's as special as her home is, making us feel welcome and taken care of. Truly an amazing space tucked away on the North Coast. We'll be back.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME We became hosts to share our home with travelers as a way to meet new people & to make sure the weary travelers have a place that feels like home to stay in. We want our guests to enjoy a home cooked meal, conversation & stay in a warm cozy room. To give that person a bit of family time, even if it isn’t their own family. When you’re on the road for a while, you start to miss that. So even if your stay here is brief we want you to feel as if you ARE a part of it!
The house is a 125 year old Victorian Farmhouse situated on 2 acres. Large open rooms, high ceilings with lots of bright light. Our home has been furnished and decorated to compliment the house’ structure. Our house is incredibly warm and inviting. The GUEST ROOM, is light and airy with enough space to accommodate at least 3 people at a time. Brand new mattress, bedding & pillows are provided. Along with brand new towels, hand towels & washcloths. As an EXTRA touch, I’ve put together a goodie basket. Travel size toiletries & little gifts to make your stay just a little more special than I already think & hope it will be!!
Our home is situated in what is referred to as the “Foggy Bottoms”. 5 miles from the ocean, our home is surrounded by fields. In the evening the Marine Layer rolls in and it’s like watching a giant bank of fog roll right towards you. We also see some of the most amazing sunsets! Several movies have been filmed right here in Ferndale, Including the Majestic with Jim Carrey and others. The Gingerbread mansion, the Victorian Village Inn, the Humboldt Creamery, and Bear River Casino, are just a few of the places that are within walking or riding distance. The Christmas season holds amazing events every weekend until Christmas Day. Amazing shopping, theatrical events, the local choir are just a few things: there are also several Victorian churches in town that are spectacular.
  • I chose to stay at Misty's for a variety of reasons. The price was great, the location was perfect, and there were pictures of baby bunnies in the profile. The first night I was there I went straight to bed, despite the family's warm welcome and invitation to join them for a little TV watching. I was exhausted and passed right out. The next morning there was coffee. I ran to the beach (5.5 miles from Misty's house!) and back again, across beautiful country filled with animals and Victorian houses. Drivers were very cautious with a runner on the road and everybody I talked to was delightful. When I got back Misty made more coffee for me, offered me the shower, and was quiet when I fell back asleep...ha. She provided food before I went out for a massage and made me feel right at home. The town of Ferndale is charming as can be, and Misty's house is close enough to walk or bike into downtown. The houses around are fantastic and the second day of my stay, Misty took me to visit a dairy before we biked around town together. I have only about a million food restrictions but Misty listened to me and checked in, producing an absolutely wonderful dinner one night that I could eat with her and her family. All in all, I held a million rabbits, enjoyed Misty's family (thanks for the Valentine's day chocolates!), had plenty of solitary time and as much companionship as I desired. Misty is an absolutely wonderful host and if you're looking for a warm & welcoming farm stay, this is the place for you.

    Kristin2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The best spot to stay at in Ferndale, by far! I usually camp when I come up north, but it was so cold that I just wanted a warm bed for my stay. Misty’s home was comfortable, warm, and friendly. I am so thankful for her hospitality and kindness, and will definitely stay again when I next visit the area.

    Chandler2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful stay at Misty's. Really a home visit, with all the care and attention, and at the same time respect for privacy, peace and quiet. Misty is s great host!Ferndale in January is a tranquil town. You can feel the history of the old west in the main Street. The redwood forest in Humboldt is close by, and the roundtrip on Mattole road is rough and bumpy but absolutely gorgeous. I'd be happy to stay again!

    Maarten2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a complete homey feel for a stay this is it! I had spent the last 12 days of a road trip staying in “private rooms” that had ended up just being rooms in small hostels that had no onsite hosts. This place is you staying with a literal family. It was great after being on the road by myself to suddenly just be sitting on a couch watching tv with a 4 person family after we all ate dinner together. A really wholesome feeling. Misty is super cool too! She’s an avid plant person, a “dirt baby” as she proclaims, so if you’re into plants this is a place for you. Her husband Josh is also a very good craftsman/handyman/artist. Two people that have a lot in common with a lot of people. Great place for entertainment and conversation and company.

    Jesse2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful place with tremendous energy, I will come back If I can , thank you very much for the cute experience

  • Rodney's place was the perfect place for our jaunt into the woods! There was plenty of room! The decor was what I would expect for a place by the woods. It is comfortable, and feels like home, and the neighborhood is quiet -- We could not have asked for anything better!! The kitchen was very well equipped (and over the sink was a window that looked through to the woods!!! and there is a room just to sit and meditate and look at the woods or the birds that happen to live in those woods. Rodney is very gracious, and has a great deal of knowledge about history in California! My friend and he had a wonderful conversation!! I would definitely recommend staying here!!

  • Great size room. The jacuzzi tub was a great touch & my kids loved the bunk beds!! The hotel is in a great location, close to many restaurants. The only thing that I could see improving would be the breakfast selection, maybe bagels or pastries?

    Bobbee2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Stay here if you want a spacious room with a warm, comfortable bed and a jacuzzi bath!! That latter part was the highlight of our stay! Our only issue was that the pool is right by the room so you definitely hear the kids yelling and splashing around, but it didn't affect our sleep any, so it didn't ruin anything. Overall great visit in a hotel that's being renovated. You can see the great updates in the lobby and while the room is a little older, it's spotlessly clean so no complaints there! We had a very cozy night. Just right.

The best places to eat in Fortuna are L's kitchen for breakfast, Kome sushi or the Eel River brewery for lunch or dinner.
  • My sister and I had a great time staying in this quirky place. It was a great location and was so beautiful. We want to come back for a longer stay!

  • Amazing and beautiful property, cute little private guest home

  • Cheryl is a warm and welcoming host! The imperial spartan is situated in a quiet spot surrounded by nature—great for a restful weekend. Heaters at either end made for a cozy atmosphere even in January! Loved our stay so much it was really hard to leave. Thanks again!

    Jennifer2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great, really separates you from work and public, puts you in your zone with your significant other/ or other, I love how there were pots and pans to cook lol

    Ezra2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place and stayed here for a week. Was like walking back in time. Had everything we needed and more. The setting is very peaceful. There are a lot of things to do around the area. Shopping, great drives along the coast. Loved the Dogs and the goat, Elvis. We would stay here again when in the area.

    Rita2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for peace and quiet. Close to town but in the forrest.

    Lori2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Because of a booking conflict, I had the benefit and pleasure of staying in both of Cheryl's properties just outside of Fortuna. They're both lovely units full of very personal, creative and homey touches. All three of us (husband, dog and me) loved it. The long gravel road leading to the complex gives one the sense of being out in the country even though you're minutes away from the village. We would certainly stay again and appreciate the hospitality!

    Fred2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl's place was a great stop-off on our rainy drive down the coast from Portland to the Bay Area for the holidays. The trailer was very cozy and well stocked with wine and board games. The location provided the privacy of being in the woods while only minutes away from downtown Fortuna and Eel River Brewery. We will definitely consider staying again next time we take 101 in the winter. Thanks Cheryl!

Relax for a while or go exploring in our town, which has been in existence for over 160 years. My home is three blocks from the Main Street of the Victorian Village of Ferndale, close to coffee lounges, restaurants, a repertory theater, and unique shops. The house is a cozy, mid-century ranch-style where guests can relax in the living room, sunroom or on a small deck overlooking the garden. There is no TV in this room but you're welcome to watch it in the family room.
This room is fairly large, with 2 rocking chairs to relax in, decorated in a Victorian theme. There is no TV in this room, but I have books and magazines to read. Not enough of them? Just ask, I have many on the history of Ferndale. Should you need 2 beds I have another guests room. Check out "Bacca's Den". It's possible it may be available. You will have your own private bathroom just a door away,
A very quiet neighborhood that makes for a good nights sleep. You may hear an occasional fire siren or some crickets, but not terribly often. I I have a lot of parking space so you’ll be able to park directly in front of my house Don't be surprised if you see deer roaming the neighborhood, or raccoons and opossums at night. They’re always looking for flowers and shrubs to eat. They seem to like these better than wild vegetation.
  • Ferndale is an idyllic historic town and this room was a perfect walking distance fit with an outstanding, thoughtful host.

  • Eunice is a lovely host who has a wealth of local information and history having grown up in Ferndale. She is outgoing, communicates well and her dog Lady is a delight to meet. We would definitely come back again and recommend her place to anyone traveling in the area.

  • Eunice is a fantastic host! She loves to share information about the history of Ferndale, and can provide local tips and recommendations for things to do/places to explore. Her home is cozy, and she makes you feel like part of the family.

    Tristan2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Eunice is a wonderful host - super friendly and caring. We loved chatting with her, and learning about the area and a lot about her. "Lady" was also super friendly. The house is maintained very well, and we had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. We would love to come back some time..

    Veena2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Nice large bedroom with a comfortable bed and pretty decor. The new looking shades are white and good quality so they block the cold and or morning light if you need to sleep in. The bathroom is sparking clean and has a double sink and plenty of towels. Eunice is helpful and obviously loves being the best host possible!

Its not actually a ranch these days, but this comfy 2-bedroom apartment adjacent to one of the oldest buildings in Fortuna has definitely got old ranchería vibes. We are in the heart of Humboldt County, only 20 mins from the famous Avenue of the Giants, 20 mins from the beach, 20 mins from Eureka where you can find shopping at the mall or the historical old town by the bay.
There are many things to do here in humboldt county. I was born and raised here and will be happy to share some local favorite spots. The house itself is a historical part of Fortuna. A unique and cozy spot with a ton of character. The front and back yards are fully fenced, perfect for children or pets. You will be within walking distance to the bus stop, a small cafe, market and neighborhood playground.
Fortuna the friendly city! This particular spot is a historical part of fortuna, and it is all that is left of the original down town Rohnerville, CA from the 1800s.
  • Karins place is very clean and she is very good at responding to anything one might need.

  • The outside environment is amazing and we could breathe fresh air just outside of the house. But the house is a little bit smaller than I expected but it is still sweet and warm.

    Yanhe2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is an incredible spot! The outdoor shower is incredible, the cabin is cozy and amazing, and we couldnt ask for a better location. We will be back!

  • Beautiful spot in the forest with great access to pristine river. Bryan and Haley are great host who think about all the little things that will make your stay comfortable

    Tomer2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Jaw dropping scenery. Adorable little place to sleep. Note this is on a large property, behind at least 2 larger houses, which you can see from the yard.

    Sue2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great, relaxing stay. Would reccomend for the value. Wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy all the amenities!

    Amanda2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very kind hosts. I would give them more than 5 stars if I could! The Redwood River Cottage was perfect for our stay, even on a cold November day. Inside, it was easy to keep warm with the electric fireplace and comfortable on the mattress and futon. The property doesn’t have a bad view anywhere you look! The energy of the property felt so loving and accepting. I communed with Great Spirit and hung out with my dad, all in one trip. Bryan offered us assistance every time we needed it, and Haley made our dishes disappear like magic. I hope to come back in the summer and enjoy a swim. 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌊 🌙

    Alice2019-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is a truly special little cottage nestled in the redwoods, on the bank of the Van Duzen river. A perfect getaway to do some creative work (writing, photography, etc) which is exactly what I did. I echo the other great reviews in saying that there are a number of nice touches (sauna, aromatherapy diffuser, local art, magical outdoor shower) and that Bryan and Haley are extremely kind and communicative. Despite losing cell service, the path is clearly marked on the way in, and the solar-powered motion-sensing lights illuminate every important step if arriving/departing in the dark. This was a game-changer for me while I lugged all my stuff to and from the cottage. 10/10 would recommend!

Any reservations for beyond May will be accepted with our promise that you will receive a full refund on cancellations within 48 hours of the reservation. Stay safe and well.
The property is off the road, sheltered and lush. The house is filled with history; the decor is original vintage. Our property, 80 acres, is lush and filled with birds, deer, critters of all kinds, plus our resident emu and two alpacas. (Bob, the emu, is friendly and strangely affectionate.) John bakes fresh, whole wheat bread daily, makes ice-cream as often as needed. A local farmer delivers the eggs. All meals are cooked and baked "from scratch." We prepare to dietary restrictions, as requested (veg/vegan, GF, lactose-free, etc.) We can put a cot in the adjacent reading room for a third person in your party. Private bathroom includes tub. Queen bed has memory-foam mattress. Deck has private entrance. This space was originally built as a family/separate space for a live-in mother/child (Wendy). Inquire about multinight discount.
Beautiful valley by the ocean; neighbors are beef ranchers. Small, Victorian-gingerbread town four miles east is a real town, not only a tourist attraction. There is a burgeoning young music scene, blacksmiths, a kayak builder, sculptors, painters -- all open to visitors and participants. Outstanding quilt shop w/classes. 45-year-old repertory theatre. Constant parades, festivals, special events. Excellent library and museum. Eclectic, creatively stocked, high-end artisan shops. Best hot-dog buns in America. A family-owned, 120-year-old drug store that will work with you if you've forgotten your meds. Stunning redwood forest hike within city limits. Historic cemetery w/many stories. Dairy farm tours. River tours w/eco-expert in hidden sloughs. (Ask ahead). Come for a week and live like a local in one of America's last true villages. Of course, there's also Big Nature: the ocean, the redwoods...birding, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, cycling, running, outdoor photography, film-making, fishing, duck hunting; plus Victorian architecture, exceptional regional food, cooking and baking. Thoroughbred horse racing in August. World-famous kinetic sculpture race on Memorial Day weekend. World's tallest living Christmas tree lighting, lighted tractor parade, in December. Stay more than one night. Really. Ferndale is more than a one-night stand. It's a life well-lived.
  • Like going to visit family. A historic home filled with antiques, old photos and books. The hosts are so sweet and friendly, plus the meals are delicious. Beds were comfy and blackout curtains let me sleep in a bit. Owner is editor of local museum paper and can tell you all about the town, which was super cool.

  • Wonderful place to visit! The food was fantastic, the pasture view is beautiful from the dining table, everything was welcoming and comfortable. It’s a short drive to Centerville beach, a quick hike up into the 80 acres of property to explore, town is a short drive to scenic, historic Ferndale. I can’t recommend this stay enough for people wanting to get away a little and enjoy some Peaceful time at the farm and the beach. Also, meeting Bob the Emu, Larry and Darrel the alpacas, and Louie, their canine companion, was an extra treat! Top notch stay!

  • What a lovely stay. Wendy and John provided a great place for us to stop on the last night of a road trip. Other guests were staying in their second guest room and we had a fantastic dinner together made by Wendy. John's breakfast in the morning was superb. Beautiful property in a great location close to to Lost Coast and Redwood Forest. We will be back!

  • Lovely hosts, relaxing environment in a quiet location. Fabulous home cooked meals to your individual preferences,. Super comfortable bed in a private suite with bathroom. Close to town and lots of history and information on the area. Wendy and John were so friendly and our many conversations were thoroughly enjoyed. We would definitely recommend a visit to their charming home.

    Margo2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Friendly, interesting hosts provide good company and incredible meals. This is a literary household filled with books. The setting is so quiet as to allow one to hear the waves crashing against the shore a mile away. While it may not be ideal for someone looking for a quick stop right off the freeway, the short drive into the countryside is well worth it.

    Joshua2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Still my favorite place to visit….

    Sue2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy and John are lovely hosts and their farmhouse is very cozy and inviting. The room and space are just as described. The and the quiet setting and location just up the street from the beach is exactly what I was looking for. They cooked us wonderful dinner and breakfast with local ingredients. Delicious! They were also very accommodating of my doggies which I always appreciate when traveling. Lovely and super interesting people! Thank you for your hospitality.

This large 14X20 room plus bathroom is for non-smoking/non-smoker guests. It has windows with wooded views and a private entrance. Also a queen size Tempur-pedic mattress, WiFi, microwave oven, electric tea kettle, toaster, Keurig, refrigerator, large TV (with over 250 channels), DVD player, and off street parking. Nothing high-end here (except the mattress) but very comfy, clean, and private.
Our guest room is next door to our home, sharing the same property. There is a tall privacy fence in the backyard separating our deck area from our side yard and guestroom allowing plenty of space for guests to lounge in their own area of the yard. There is also an apartment on our property that can't be seen from our guestroom so this allows for plenty of privacy for our tenants as well as our guests. The tenants are quiet and we ask our guests to be quiet as well. They own a very friendly chocolate lab that we "babysit" at times. We don't anticipate any interaction between the dog and our guests unless you choose to meet her, and while in our yard, she is always leashed. The futon bed can accommodate 2 adults of small size. Just let me know what your needs are BEFORE you arrive so I can change it from couch to bed. If there are only 2 people and you require the bed and futon be made into a bed, there is an extra $10 charge. Also before you book our room, remember that this is not a place to come to party. Our property is for peaceful, quiet people only. I have listed this room unsuitable for children below the age of 12 (because my only choice was all or over the age of 12) but if you feel your child would be a suitable fit for our quiet setting, just contact me and let me know. As a side note, when I clicked on the map of our listing, it appeared we were way off the road. We are actually right on Ocean Ave...if you detail in, the property showing two buildings is ours. We are a very easy walk to town and for our area (Ferndale), we are an excellent value. Please check the other Ferndale listings to realize our value before you book and upon review, please be fair and don't compare our value to what you would like to pay or to what other Airbnb's in other cities charge.
Many of the Victorian houses in our little town were built by wealthy dairy farmers in the late 1800's when Ferndale was one of the state's most productive agricultural regions. They became known as “Butterfat Palaces”. Our property is only a couple of blocks from Main Street and is not a Victorian home but it is an easy walk if you'd like to enjoy the beautiful architecture, fine dining, shopping, art galleries, theatre, concert hall, or all the parades and special events offered in our little town. If you'd like to enjoy the beach, just drive about 4 scenic miles down our street. To see the beautiful redwoods, head south on 101 to Avenue of the Giants (about a 40 minute drive) or (weather permitting) take the scenic drive up The Wildcat.
  • Peggy's place is like going home for us. When in Ferndale, it is the only place to go., Convenience, easy to find, great evening walk

    Les2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Peggy offers a very comfortable place to stay with every amenity you might need. She offers privacy but can answer any questions or concerns you might have. It is easy to find your way to location and around Ferndale. Have stayed here twice, and will again. You will enjoy it.

  • What a great find!! We loved our stay in Ferndale at Peggy’s place! Great location, and walking distance to Main St. Extremely clean, very comfortable bed & pillows, soft sheets & blankets, and lots of nice personal touches such as home baked muffins, fruit, popcorn and other snacks provided! You can see Peggy takes great pride in her place and has even thought of the little things, including nice bathroom products being on hand!! We definitely will stay again in the future if traveling to Ferndale and needing a place to stay! I would highly recommend this affordable, cute little Air BNB if you are traveling to Ferndale and looking for somewhere to stay!!

    Chrystal2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • A very comfortable place to stay! Peggy goes out of her way to add special touches in case you might need anything. The property is beautiful, quiet and she is very respectful of your space but available if needed. And the bed was especially comfortable! I will be back when I come to visit family in the area.

    Karen2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Living in the city, it has become necessary for me to sleep with earplugs. I slept like a baby in this place earplug free and on a very comfortable mattress with great pillows. It was the perfect location to explore Ferndale. I would recommend this place to anyone going to Humboldt, and look forward to booking it again in the future. Thank you again Peggy.

  • Jeff (owner) was incredibly communicative, offered to make me reservations at restaurants and gave me local tips as my defacto tour guide. I really appreciated the care and attention he took to making sure my stay was pleasant. The service matters. Will definitely revisit.

  • This was a nice place to stay! The room was clean, the breakfast was good and it is conveniently located!

  • Locally owned refurbished hotel, feels like an old classic family resort. Board games, books and comfy chairs in the common room, nice buffet breakfast, very clean rooms with all amenities including fridge and microwave. Set back a block from the riverfront next to a great brewery restaurant and by the other big chain hotels (where I have also stayed)....this place is a hidden gem at a very good price!

    Lisa2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay and loved the extra touches such as the art on the walls of the stairs. The lobby is really nice and the breakfast was great! Our room was very comfortable and we slept well.

    Sherry2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem of a place. The location is perfect, just off the highway yet quiet. Dog friendly with a great outside area. It is an older motel that has been given a new life, with thoughtful and modern touches. The coffee and breakfast are great. The Funky Monkey pizza next door had one of the freshest salads I’ve had, and the pizza was so flavorful. We slept like babies. Highly recommend.

  • Great spot on the banks of the Eel River, the Redwood Hotel was a perfect oasis for our road trip. Creekside Cottage is a newly renovated, light and airy one bedroom cozy house in downtown historic Ferndale. Inside you'll find the original rustic redwood plank flooring and ceiling beams, with a brand new modern farmhouse kitchen and sparkling new bathroom. It's a great location for two people and has a small back deck overlooking Francis Creek. You'll never want to leave!
We recently completed renovating the separate workshop and garage space of a late 1800's home in Ferndale, California, to make this beautiful new cottage. We restored the original wide plank redwood flooring throughout and added a brand new kitchen and bathroom. The one bedroom cottage has wifi, cable and a large Roku-enabled television. There is a queen bed and a wardrobe, separated visually from the kitchen/living space by the sliding barn doors from the original workshop. The bathroom has a shower and tub combination with on-demand hot water, tile floor, and a marble vanity. Everything is freshly painted. Enjoy your morning coffee at the kitchen island seating area or out on the back deck overlooking the creek. The fully-equipped kitchen has dishes, pots and pans, toaster, oven, and microwave. There's a grocery store one block away for groceries, or head out to the local cafes down the street for a hearty Ferndale breakfast. This cottage is great for two, but can accommodate a third person on the futon sofa in the living room, with bedding available when reserving with three people ($30 charge for a third person, including children). There is parking in the driveway right in front of the Creekside Cottage. The cottage is behind another home, but has it's own driveway entrance and access.
The house is located in historic downtown Ferndale in a quiet neighborhood. It is steps from multiple fantastic local restaurants, bars, and our city park. We are happy to give recommendations for where to eat around town. Less than a minute walk is the local grocery store with a deli and meat counter, liquor store, pharmacy, butcher, and tons of great local shops. The house is near the park on the edge of town, which has a baseball diamond, playground area, and bocce ball courts. There are many great local day trips, such as our close beach only five miles away, day hikes, breweries, and the scenic drive to Petrolia and the Lost Coast. Humboldt Redwoods State Park is 30 minutes south on Highway 101.
  • This charming and sparkling clean place was the perfect place to stay for our little get away! The walkability to Ferndale was amazing! I highly recommend Kathleen’s place- we will be back. The wine, that appears to be made by a family member, was a special touch! We will be back.

    Natalie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Clean little place with so much style. Great location near city park and Main Street.

    Heather Rae2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Enjoyed our stay immensely. I was constantly remarking at how well-stocked the place was! Everything from lotion to makeup wipes and creamer for the coffee! Beautiful little town with the sweetest people. Great retreat. Little patio with the view or the creek is the icing on the cake!

  • This wonderful private space is central, exceptional, thoughtful, and perfect for a couples stay in ferndale.

    Benjamin2019-11-25T00:00:00Z

    Adrianne2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • If you are traveling in Northern California then make a stop in Ferndale and stay at Kathleen's place. Not only was the location ideal (2 blocks to downtown) but the cottage backs to a creek (with deck!) - quiet and beautiful place to have a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Kathleen had a bottle of wine waiting for us! She also designed a very beautiful space, complete with everything you need to make a meal (although there was a great restaurant just a few minute walk). Highly recommend!

Just a 10 minute drive south on 101 takes you to the Avenue Of the Giants. The Botanical Gardens just 10 minus north, and theWildlife Refuge and Marsh are even closer. Historic Ferndale just minutes away!
  • The place is super cute and cozy and perfect for 1-2 people. The barn animals were fun to watch but I think the geese were under the impression that they are the alarm system and would make noises from time to time. It was perfect if you need to stay in the Fortuna area. There was a nice town nearby called Ferndale with restaurants and shops and an incredible beach just a short drive away.

  • Pamela's barn cottage was perfect for my daughter and I to stay in while we visited my mom who lives in Fortuna, only 5 mins away in town. It was super cosy, and we really enjoyed the fresh eggs that were in the fridge. The chickens, geese and alpacas were also very cool.

    Jessica2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful little jewel with furry and feathered friends!

    Peggy Sue2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Warm and cozy cabin in the country about 2 minutes from the freeway! Fresh eggs and friendly livestock! One of the alpacas is a real ham. It was a blast staying there. Pam and staff (sorry forget her name!) were responsive and welcoming. Only issue is my dumb city phone didn't work so well up there, although texting worked fine. Locals say only Verizon is foolproof up this way so not specific to this cabin. Recommend and would stay again for sure!

    Lisa2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela’s cottage is so comfortable and had everything we needed for our weekend stay. The chicken decor is very country chic. We loved visiting with Curley and Mo (the alpacas) and feeding the chickens. The cottage is located just a 5 min drive from the restaurants of Fortuna and about 15 min from Ferndale. Definitely recommend.
