Places to stay in Hovingham
Come and stay in our beautifully finished, tin shepherds hut at the bottom of our garden. We are located in the rolling countryside with extensive views over the vale of York. After a day of exploring this AONB, there’s nothing like cooking tea over the fire pit followed by a dip under the stars in our rustic hot tub. Fall into a fresh clean bed and wake up to the sound of the dawn chorus. Our bathroom barn provides all your needs for a morning freshen up! See you soon.
The name "The Hut In The Wild" is just our name for the hut. The hut is located on our property at the bottom of our garden not in the wild. It is a beautiful shepherds hut in a gorgeous area with a fantastic view over the fields and hills. Experience a little wild living, cook on a fire pit and soak in a rustic wood fired hot tub.
We are set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and literally located at the end of a lane in a farming hamlet and look out onto fields where the many foothpaths start. Close by is the fantastic Yearsley woods which is great for walking, running, horse riding and biking. Further afield towards the coast you will find Dalby Forest which provides bikers with a choice of green, red and blue tracks! If you want to cycle or venture off in the car there are many places to visit...Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Rievaulx Terrace. Helmsley, Malton, Pickering, Easingwold and Thirsk are our local market towns full of places to eat and drink and a chance to pick up some nibbles. We don’t have a pub in our hamlet but there are plenty on offer a short drive away. The Durham Ox in Crayke and The Fairfax Arms in Gilling are lovely gastro pubs. Or you can opt for a more informal pub in Sheriff Hutton, The Highwayman or The White Bear in Stillington where you can get quite a hearty meal! Hope this helps in planning your stay.
  • What a wonderful place Susi has. It feels like a real escape from the outside world. Lovely views and such a peaceful location. Lovely touches like fresh bread, eggs, jam, tea, coffee... perfect! Great hot tub too and brilliantly rustic all of it! Very thoughtfully done. Would recommend to anyone looking to get away from it all!

  • What a hidden gem. The Hut in the Wild is perfect. Susi has thought of everything, and the wood fired hot tub was absolutely amazing.

    Philip2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot put into words how amazing this place is you just have to go! Me and my partner absolutely loved every minute of being at the hut in the wild and we will be returning!! Thank you

    Becky2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Such a quaint little spot that looked over a lovely stretch of countryside. The hut is perfectly equipped for everything you need. And the bed is soooo comfy! The hot tub was not quite up and going when we arrived which was a shame not to get into it in the day light - but was scorching and ready to go as Susi described three hours later. We enjoyed a very comfortable stay (even with the furious wind!) and would definately recommend!

    Amy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Such a lovely Airbnb! Attention to detail and added touches made it feel so homely. Bread, butter, jam, eggs, milk & juice were provided for breakfast! We appreciated the hot water bottles and slippers. Susi kept the hot tub going for us and it was boiling, despite the weather. Hopefully will return in the warmer months!!

    Daisy2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Susi was quick to respond to any queries I had and was able to put up ‘Happy Birthday’ bunting for my partner. Everything in the hut is well thought out and the eggs, bread, milk, butter and jam are perfect for breakfast. We were able to enjoy the hot tub even in the drizzle as it was piping hot. It was a perfect private retreat and I’m sure I’ll be returning some time in the future.

    Hannah2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • A huge thank you for our stay, the birthday bunting and the little extras. We had a lovely stay and thoroughly enjoyed the view from the hot tub. We will hope to return in the warmer months 🌞

    Verity2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing stay away for a night, a perfect get away for some space from busy life. How rural it was made it extra special, very quiet and the hut itself was stunning. The hot tub was amazing, will be back in warmer months to experience it again but it warmed up well especially in the bad weather! Couldnt recommend the place enough, and susie was a fabulous host. Thanks again!

  • This was a great holiday. The cottage is in a tremendous location with access to a great variety of stunning local walks. Castle Howard and the Yorkshire Arboretum are virtually on the doorstep. We couldn't have been happier with the way that Sara hosted us - friendly and helpful with the tips we needed for making the most of our time. The log burner was much appreciated, the bed was very comfortable and the cottage had everything we needed. We've had quite a few cottage holidays over the years but this was easily our favourite.

  • This is a beautiful cottage with everything you need. It’s lovely and cosy and spotlessly clean. Sara has added lovely touches such as flowers and a card to welcome us. She called us the day before to check everything was ok and if there was anything we needed. There are fantastic views across the fields which are great to look at from the bedroom window. Kitchen is well equipped and makes for easy self catering. Everything was so lovely when we arrived that we booked another night. The location is perfect for visiting Castle Howard, Pickering (steam train takes you to Whitby) and York as well lots of lovely market towns. There’s a supermarket nearby and some great pubs for eating out. We will certainly be returning so that we can explore more of the area.

    Nick2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Super Yorkshire welcome in a great location. Sara’s place is fantastic with a really homely feel. It’s bigger than it looks on the pictures but very cosy. There are loads of amenities in the kitchen and bathroom and some lovely extra touches. The best thing about the place is the location and the view. Right next to Castle Howard and the Yorkshire Arboretum there are loads of great places to walk or visit. The stunning Yorkshire Moors and coast are a short drive. All this and such helpful and friendly host makes this an amazing place to stay.

It's in a great location, surrounded by beautiful countryside and only a short walk to the village pub. Little touches make this place really special and it was spotless as well. Angie is a great host and responds very quickly. We had a lovely weekend stay and would recommend it highly.

A guest suite with double bed with en-suite. Ideal location for either a holiday or if working away from home as a quiet retreat. By car Malton and Pickering are 15 mins, York 40mins North Yorkshire moors 20 mins, Castle Howard 7 mins as well as all the other attractions such as the Howardian Hills and woodland walks. Ideal for walkers! Coast approx 45mins. Utility room with hob if needed. Variety of herbal teas and fresh coffee supplied.
Rye View Cottage is a peaceful rural retreat. The bedroom and en suite available to guests are not in the main part of the house so although family members may use the utility room and study area below we try not to when somebody is staying. We are ideally situated for visiting the City of York, the North Yorkshire moors and the east coast. A good supply of literature is available for guests for both good and bad weather! Homemade sourdough is given at breakfast and if required these can be bought if ordered in advance. A travel cot and stairgate are available if needed. Butterwick is a small village made up of eleven houses with no through road therefore it has a charm and peace about it that is often difficult to find in today's busy world. The birdsong is particularly outstanding.
Butterwick is a small village (classed as a village as it has a church), only eleven houses and a no through road which makes it extremely peaceful! A world away from the hussle and bussle of towns and cities! The community is very friendly and often there are 'village events' open to all. David and myself have lived here for approximately ten/eleven years. Nearby is the food capital of the north (Malton) the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, Castle Howard and the Howardian Hills.
  • Lovely cosy annexe, attached to owners home but with separate parking and access, in quiet rural location. Helen was a really friendly and helpful host, sharing advice on places to eat out and to explore; and accommodation was everything it promised to be, and more. After a very comfortable night, we savoured the selection of home made breads that were provided as a breakfast treat. Would happily stay again next time we are in this area.

The room is spacious and south-facing within a comfortable home on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The house occupies a central position, two minutes walk from the local shop, a cafe and two excellent village pubs. There is also a leisure centre and playground in Ampleforth, and York is only 40 minutes away. Local attractions include Sutton Bank for biking and gliding; Castle Howard, the ruined abbeys of Reivaulx, Byland and Fountains, plus the bustling market town of Helmsley.
Our home is warm and welcoming, and the spaces generous as this is an old house built before 1745. The main hall is attractive with a french dresser and the bathroom is well thought out with natural stone tiles and is also fairly spacious. Outside is a beautiful terrace which enjoys full sun. The guest-room has been modified to include a kitchenette so guests can enjoy the benefits of a microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and work station. There is also access to smart t.v with streaming services and Netflix.

We live in Fadmoor, right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, between the beautiful dales of Farndale and Bransdale. Great for hiking and mountain biking, or sightseeing; the famous mediaeval city of York is about 25 miles to the South. The accommodation is an Annex to our house, with its own entrance opening on to a utility area with downstairs toilet. There are two bedrooms, a separate shower room and a living/dining area. We only rent the Annex to a single party.
We charge per bedroom, so if you only require one, you'll still have the place to yourself. The basic charge is for two guests using one bedroom. If you need the other bedroom for more guests, please add 50% to the fee. If you have an additional child, we can provide another fold up bed at a modest extra cost. You're welcome to use the facilities in the utility room which is part of the annex: sink; fridge/freezer; washing machine; tumble dryer; microwave. Tea, coffee, milk etc will be provided, as well as cereals for a light breakfast. The living space comprises a large room with patio doors opening on to the gravel drive. There's a very comfortable sofa and chair at one end and a large dining table and chairs at the other. All bed linen and towels are included and there will be soap, shower gel, shampoo etc for you to use. The shower is electric, so there is plenty of hot water available after a hard day walking or cycling! If you do need to clean of boots or mountain bikes, there's an outside tap and hose. There's ample parking on the drive for several cars. If something isn't included in the listing, please just talk to us when you arrive and we'll help as much as we can.
If you love hiking or mountain biking, this is the place for you! The National Park boundary runs through the middle of Fadmoor and the edge of the moors is just to the North. We can help with suggestions for routes and lend you maps. Farndale is world famous for the wild daffodils which flower in the spring and people travel from all over the world to walk through the dale. The coast is also about a 45 minute drive away; the well known town of Whitby and the Yorkshire Jurassic coast are within easy reach. There is a pub / restaurant about 10 minutes walk away and two Michelin starred restaurants a short drive away, the Black Swan at Oldstead owned by the famous Banks brothers and the Star at Harome. Kirkbymoorside is a few minutes drive and has small supermarkets open 'til late 7 days a week in case you run out of gin!

  • We were not disappointed with our lovely stay. Owletts is just perfect , the attention to detail is so good you just cannot fault it. It was warm and cosy the bed linen was soft and beds super comfy. The kitchen worked well for our lazy breakfasts. The village pubs are great and so close it's a dream. We will be going back as there is so much to explore. Thank you to our wonderful hosts!

  • Lovely comfortable cottage very clean. Thoughtful hosts and the area has wonderfull walks and great pubs.

    Sandra2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We booked last minute with our two young children, super happy to find something so nice at short notice. The cottage is beautifully done, all brand new, stylish with bags of character and absolutely spotless. Lots of thoughtful touches from Anna & Reece like milk, muffins, logs and even wine! Luxurious bedding and fluffy towels provided, even TVs in both bedrooms (to the kids delight!). Stove kicked out so much heat it was glorious. Could have easily stayed a week. Really nice village with a lovely pub a 5 min walk away. Can't thank the owners enough for being so welconing, will definitely be back again if you'll have us 😀

    Victoria2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Anna & Reece’s cottage is everything you could want & more for a relaxing stay in the peaceful countryside. We arrived late in the evening unexpectedly thanks to traffic. But yet we were still greeted by a very welcoming Reece, who had popped the heating on for us ready for our arrival which was very much appreciated after a long cold drive. Inside is the most immaculately sparkling clean cottage, but still has a very cosy feel to it. We had all the amenities we could have possibly needed and more. Outside the cottage are plenty of countryside walks, Reece also recommended a nearby pub which served excellent food. You are also in driving distance of York. We couldn’t recommend The Owlets more, and we will definitely be back to stay again!

    Zac2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Owlets has been beautifully converted with great style. Lovely and cosy and well equipped.

Come and stay in our small but perfectly-formed guest space! It's completely separate from the main cottage, so you have privacy and can come and go as you please. It's warm and cosy and luxurious, and the en-suite offers a wonderful shower! And breakfast is included.
Cross the rose-covered patio and take the stone steps down into this charming guest space created within an old stone barn, and discover original features including exposed timber beams.
Stonegrave is situated in the heart of Ryedale, North Yorkshire, and is an excellent base for exploring the North York Moors, the nearby market towns of Helmsley and Malton, and the Hambleton Hills to the south. Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey are just a short drive away. Closer to home there are wonderful walks through countryside from the door, especially if you want to include pubs or tea rooms. To the north It's a lovely mile over the hill to Nunnington with its gallery, artisan workshops and coffee shop. To the south Hovingham is about two miles, where the Cricketers Bar and Worsley Arms, village shop, bakery, and both tea rooms will serve you well. And the excellent Fairfax Arms is just three miles down the lane at Gilling East.
  • Thanks to James for having us! This is a great little Annex close by to the national parks for those with cars! Great spot to catch some sleep. There are lots of lovely (but expensive) local restaurants/pubs to try out - around 5-10 minutes drive down country lanes. Breakfast is provided in the room - cereals, teas, coffees and delicious home-made bread which can be warmed up in the mini-oven. However, other meals are not provided/no space for cooking as kitchen access isn't available. Perfect though if you're keen to check out the local spots, and feeling cosy and cottage-y. Thanks again for having us!

There’s also a really cosy separate lounge for guests with nice sofa, big tv and a wood burner. Kitchen facilities are excellent, there’s plenty of space in the fridge and the kitchen is really well equipped. Joanne and I were preparing food at the same time on a couple of occasions and we had a glass of wine and a chat! Continental Breakfast is really good quality there was freshly prepared fruit, yoghurt, filter coffee, cereals, selections of bread/bagels etc. All in all this place is a little gem and lovely people run it. This has been my first visit but certainly won’t be my last.

  • The owner of the house was very kind and greeted us and prepared breakfast for us the next morning. The house was fantastic! Very good taste for life, winning the five-star hotel, is a very good value accommodation. Very close to the attractions of Howard Castle, just a few minutes drive, it is worth recommending!

The York garden house stands under a oak tree in our garden, with private entrance. Their is a outdoor fire area where you can toast marshmallows. We also have a glass roofed undercover seating area which is connected to our house and can be used on request (to enjoy a takeaway from the village)The garden room is very private and is entirely yours. It is a small, cosy & warm. There are electric radiators and its cosy on winter nights. It has two small single beds. Log burner is for aesthetics.
York Garden House is a corner summer house with one main room. There are low ceilings between the bedroom and shower room. There are two small single beds (70 x 180 cm), electric radiator and internet tv, wifi and ethernet. Then there is a small lobby to make a drink, leading to the shower room. There is a toilet, sink and thermostatic shower. It has its own hot water supply. The space is cosy and comfortable. May not be suitable for really tall people because of the size of the beds and the low ceilings. The log burner is mainly for aesthetics but the electric radiators are more than enough to heat the building. It is in our garden but we respect your privacy. We are happy to help in any way we can so you can make the most of your time in York. You are welcome to use our outdoor fire area to chill out on night. We have a outdoor dinning table under a glass roof that can be used to eat one of the many takeaways available in the village (just ask). Parking for one car on our drive and more cars on the street.
The garden house is in a good location with york 5 miles away and busses running every 12 mins during the day, every 30 mins at night to the city centre (every 20 mins during the day on Sunday). The bus stop is a 3 min walk from our house. Their is also a park and ride 10 minutes drive away at monks cross which can be used to also access york. Their is parking in york city centre and taxi services. The North Yorkshire Moors is just over half an hour away and is a great place to explore and walk. Haxby was originally a Viking village. It has excellent local facilities. Their are bakeries, along with award winning bread from “Haxby bake house”. Their are 2 supermarkets, shops, bank, post office with currency exchange, pubs for a traditional Yorkshire pudding Sunday dinner, restaurants like “Paddyfields” with a high class menu with cocktail bar round the corner, takeaways, haxby award winning fish and chip shop, coffe shops, doc surgery, and pharmacies. We are a family of 5, we home educate our 3 boys and love to travel as much as we can. We have stayed in many air bnbs and was inspired by some of the amazing cultural experiences we have had as a family and so the seed was planted for us to set up our own garden room to also share the area we enjoy living in and are happy to call home. We are new to air bnb and have worked as a family to create the york garden house, we are really pleased with what we have created and hope you enjoy your stay.
  • Great accommodation. It was very cosy and warm, we loved it. Space to park car on the drive or on the road. Some thoughtful touches like toiletries, umbrella and a hairdryer. Was about a 15 minute drive to York. Haxby was lovely, restaurants, pubs and take-aways within walking distance, we had a fish and chip take-away there one night, was delicious (especially the curry sauce!) . Accommodation had a smart tv and Netflix which was useful. Thank you very much :)

  • Immense hospitality, Vanessa and her husband are among the best hosts I’ve been with, everything you’d expect from a super host who earned the ratings, always going the extra mile, and the garden house itself was super! Very cozy, great place to stay.

    Alexander2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • The Garden House was perfect for my brother and I, as we were visiting family nearby for Christmas. We only needed a spillover bedroom space so this was ideal. The room is cosy and we were surprised how warm and well insulated it is. The bathroom also is really well-fitted and was over our expectations. The access was super easy as we just checked ourselves in and out with a code. We didn’t meet our hosts but Vanessa was super responsive with messages. The beds were comfy and I’m quite tall and had no issue apart from needing to duck to go through the bathroom doorway. The shower was great with nice hot water and good pressure. The tv with access to films was fab and made settling in for the night very cosy and relaxing. The internet connection was also good. There is no space for much stuff so it’s fine if you’re travelling light or just a short stopover. Very cosy and nice, will be back for sure next time we need to visit the family.

  • A cozy place and an amazing living experience.

  • Very close to shops and food and coffee and buses. Very clean and warm. They really go all out to make sure you have a great time and are fast to answer back and help if needed. It’s a place you can feel at home when your away from home. Great style and clean and safe and they let you feel like your at your home. Very willing to give advice or help and even will bring your order take out to you.

  • Lovely little cabin warm as toast in there. Very enjoyable weekend close to park and ride recommend

    Carole2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place to stay if you are planning to spend some days in York! Very reasonable price with outstanding facilities!

    Laura2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • It is exactly as seen in the pictures yet so much more! Think a cosy, warm cabin with all the mod-cons you'd need. The added touches, from directions and guides to places to eat to blankets to cutlery and crockery, mean so much and make you want for nothing. The log burner is something else but don't worry if you don't want to use it - the heating is more than powerful enough. The shower is also second to none. All in all it's a cosy, super comfortable getaway and I'd definitely return 😊

A cosy cottage with central heating and an open fire. Ideally situated centrally in Kirkbymoorside, 'the gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors'. A few minutes walk from local shops, pubs, cafes and take aways. Perfect base for exploring the Moors, coast and the beautiful city of York. Well behaved dogs welcome.
We have recently purchased the cottage and plan to add a few improvements in the next few weeks including installing a shower in the bathroom.
Kirkbymoorside is a small market town, close to Helmsley and Pickering with cafes, pubs and various shops. There are good local walks and cycle routes.
  • Lovely stay. Clean, warm and welcoming.

Lovely, self-contained mini-studio apartment in a former railway station in Gilling East, on the edge of the North York Moors. Comfy double bed with TV, wifi and en-suite. Your own entrance and kitchenette. Fantastic walks and cycle rides straight from the door as well as lots of attractions further afield.
Platform 1 is a double bedroom, complete with small sitting corner, en-suite shower room and kitchenette. There's a smart TV, superfast broadfast as well as hanging space for your clothes. The shower room has an easy-to-use electric shower and supplies such as hand soap, shampoo, tissues and cotton wool balls as well as plenty of loo roll. The kitchenette has a combi-microwave oven, fridge, sink, kettle and toaster. You'll get supplies to start you off - tea, coffee, milk and biscuits - and there's a 'breakfast' bar where two people can eatcomfortably side by side. Platform 1 also has its own seating area outside on the railway platform. It's a lovely place to sit out and has a beautiful view up towards Oswaldkirk.
Gilling itself: The lovely thing about Platform 1 at Gilling Station is that you can walk straight from the door into the most beautiful countryside. There are lots of woods, lakes and streams. It's a popular spot for walkers, mountain bikers and road bikers too. Our favourite walk at the moment is straight over the road and up the valley to the Anthony Gormley statue. It has a wonderful view of the Ampleforth Valley and is a very special place. Within three/five miles: Hovingham tea rooms and bakery are a must. Their cakes are fantastic and it's set by a little stream and ford. It's a nice bike ride away. Ampleforth Abbey is worth a visit. The tea rooms in particular are very nice. Within ten/15 miles Helmsley's great. It has super food shops and cafes and Friday's market is very good. Obviously there's the castle too and Duncombe Park. In summer it has an outdoor swimming pool which we like very much. The walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx is really worth doing but there's many other lovely walks too. Nunnington Hall - Is so worth a visit. It's a stunning National Trust building and has lovely gardens too. Castle Howard - Is just stunning. The house is wonderful as are the grounds and the garden. Goes without saying that it has lovely tea rooms and a very nice garden centre. Easingwold - Easingwold is just a very nice market place and very much worth stopping in on your way to York. Tea Hees is a very nice coffee shop as is the Curious Table. York is 30 minutes to the outskirts. Fantastic place to visit at any time of year. Whitby and the Yorkshire coast are popular destination for our guests. There are so many spots to recommend but our favourites have to be Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay.
  • Sarah’ place is the perfect base for visiting this area. So many wonderful things to do in close proximity, including wonderful walking straight from the door. All the comforts you need for your stay including thoughtful touches like milk, tea, coffee, biscuits for your arrival and luxury travel size shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the bathroom. Gorgeous view from the bedroom window and really interesting reading about the history of the station. Would highly recommend the afternoon tea at Ampleforth Abbey tea rooms - food plentiful and delicious and the free tea refills were much appreciated. Castle Howard is fabulous but I think Rievaulx Abbey was definitely our top destination. The walk from Hemsley is enjoyable through fields and woodland and the abbey itself is breathtakingly huge and architecturally stunning against the backdrop of this tiny village, Rievaulx, complete with a chocolate box thatched roof cottage. We just scratched the surface of this wonderful area so will most definitely be contacting Sarah in the future when we return.

    Josephine2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Had a very comfortable and relaxing stay, visiting family in the area. Convenient for travelling to York and Helmsley and the village of Gilling is lovely. The space is cosy and the bed is very comfortable. We stay regularly and will certainly come back again.

  • Sarah’s place is in a great and lovely location, close to Hemsley and walking routes. It is a great building (a railway station). The room itself has good facilities, allowing us to make a cooked breakfast and is lovely and clean. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend. Thank you Sarah!

  • We booked this cottage last minute for a relaxing break near to Castle Howard for some walking. I was very impressed with the cottage, its cleanliness and the way it looked.. a real home from home. We tried the pub just up the road for lunch and it was lovely and great value (and dog friendly). The cottage had every cooking utensil you should need and Diane left fresh milk, homemade cookies and dog biscuits which was a lovely touch and our dog thought so too! The bed was so comfy and the duvet thick and luxurious. We would definitely stay again :)

  • We had a great stay at Abacus Cottage where we went just to relax for a night and then do some nice walks the day after around Castle Howard. Finding the place was very easy and they keybox system worked well. Was impressed with the homemade ginger bread waiting for us! Easy to park right outside the door and there is a smart TV and a fire ready to light for a winter evening. The kitchen is well equipped and the beds have nice comfy bedding on them. We walked over to the local pub which was very friendly and dealing with Diane was super helpful and prompt. Would definitely recommend and visit again!

  • A lovely old cottage with a nice modern touch inside and it still manages to retain the charm and features. So for those that like character it'll tick that box. Again those that like modern and furbished to a high standard it'll tick that box. Excellent location just a stone throw from the A64. Easy to find. Directions from Diane spot on. She met us in person and communication was fantastic. The cottage is in a lovely little village and Castle Howard is on the doorstep. Will be looking to return once again to explore the area.

  • This is an excellent room. Everything was very clean and comfortable. We received great communication from the owner. The breakfast provisions were really tasty and thoughtful. We had the company of a friendly cat which we loved as we are cat lovers ourselves. The location was good for getting into York. There is also a fantastic cinema nearby which we visited because of rainy weather. The seats are only £4.99 with leg room and reclining. The Indian restaurant in Haxby was friendly and with great food.

  • Fantastic place hidden away just outside of York. We are from York ourselves but found it perfect to have a night away from our home renovation project. It has a fantastic link to the city centre via bus just down the road which we used to our advantage to have a few drink. It was nice to feel like tourists in our own city. The bath is a great touch and we slept well. Thanks for having us and we will be back. Matt and Jade x

The hospitality is extra special with the addition of the courtesy drop off to your local event. The breakfast was amazing with some much choice it will give you the best start possible to enjoy your day out. We would highly recommend this B&B to anyone visiting York.

  • What a wonderful place to stay! Anthea and Bill were amazing hosts. The accommodation was spotless, comfortable and completely private. Breakfast was to die for and there was plenty of healthy choices in the breakfast menu. We were so happy with them, that we intend to go back to York for Christmas and stay with them again. We can not recommend this place highly enough. It surpassed everything we expected. 11/10

  • We had a wonderful stay and Anthea and Bill's home. They were incredibly welcoming and friendly; they really kindly dropped us off in York during the middle of storm Dennis! The room was really clean, comfortable bed and contained lots of information on things to do in the area. Bath in the bathroom was amazing!

    Rachel2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely warm welcome by Anthea, Bill and their two friendly dogs. Comfortable room and bathroom and everything you could want at breakfast. Will definitely return in the future.

  • Friendly hosts in a very nice house, breakfast was brilliant, bills porridge very special. Two lovely friendly dogs . Well worth a visit

    Keith2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • What super hosts! Andrea goes out of the way to make you feel totally at home in her wonderful space (and amazing bath!). The curd tarts and toiletries plus a freshly cooked hot meal in the morning is an incredible touch. Additionally, being dropped off at our event quite late in the evening was a god send and something not many people would do for strangers. Our stay was super comfortable and relaxing and we will for sure stay again when we are in the area. The dogs also make your stay even better!

  • We had a great couple of nights at Saxton Lodge. Everything was immaculate and Jane kindly left fresh bread, milk, coffee and loads of other nice touches which was unexpected and lovely to arrive to! Both pubs/restaurants in the village are a stone’s throw away and it was a really nice base to explore the local area. It was perfect for us (with 4 month old baby). Highly recommend and hope to return ourselves.

    Helmsley, England, United Kingdom

This beautiful, newly refurbished 18th century cottage sits in the heart of the lovely North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley. Close to a variety of local amenities and things to do, the house comfortably sleeps six people and provides the ideal option for a relaxing, self-catering break.
This gorgeous three bedroom cottage is the perfect spot to enjoy the bustling, charming, small town of Helmsley itself and also take in the surrounding rolling countryside of Ryedale, North Yorkshire Moors and beyond. Our home, with its welcoming feel, sits within the local community and is a place that our family love to escape to, whatever time of year. Much larger than it initially looks, this three bedroom cottage offers ample living space for six people but it is equally comfortable if you’re a couple as you can easily close off rooms and just use what you need to. At the front of the house, on the ground floor, there is a lovely sitting room with a large log burner, sofas and a tucked away TV. What ever the season this is a cosy room with its low ceilings, comfortable seating and nice lighting. That said, on cold days with the log burner roaring it really is a gorgeous space in which to unwind and relax. In addition, on the ground floor you have a downstairs loo but more importantly a beautiful, light and airy country kitchen with a dining table and a fabulous AGA Masterchef for those who like to cook; microwave, large fridge freezer and all cooking utensils. And at the rear of the house, beyond the kitchen is the conservatory. This room is again a spacious, light room with lots of seating, a log burner, so you can enjoy it on cooler days, and a TV. It works well as a second living space and, with the bifold doors at the end, opens up to be a great garden room. The long rear garden is private, enclosed and all yours. Upstairs, on the first floor, again you have low, beamed ceilings throughout. At the front there is a twin bedroom with views into the green fields of Duncombe Park, next to this is a nice double room bedroom and thirdly a bathroom with loo, bath and separate shower. And then up into the eaves of the house, there is a more private, larger bedroom with its own door at the bottom of the stairs, an adjoining bathroom with loo, sink and shower, a kingsize bed and views into the rear garden. To summarise what’s available to you in the house: Two log burners including fuel Two (brand new) showers Electricity throughout Full gas central heating Bed linen and towels included Two large flatscreen TVs DAB / FM radio Microwave Washing machine Dishwasher Large fridge/freezer Wi-Fi One travel cot One high chair Gun cabinet (lockable) Enclosed lawned garden with terrace and furniture Offroad parking at rear Welcome pack to help get you settled As Bridge Street is our home too, we ask a few things of you as guests. Firstly, and regrettably, we don't allow pets inside the property because of allergies and secondly, we ask you not to smoke anywhere in the house. Last thing: we’ve stylishly and responsibly newly refurbished Bridge Street. A lot of thought has gone into upcycling or carefully sourcing previously loved items so not everything matches but we feel this adds to the charm. Enjoy our house and the amazing Yorkshire countryside - we’ve given you tons of things to do in your guest info pack to help you get the most out of your stay.
Situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, nestled in James Herriot country, Helmsley is a picturesque, bustling Yorkshire market town. Surrounded by stunning countryside, and set within a busy working farming community, this is a perfect spot for long and short walks, delicious food, sightseeing or just generally relaxed. Helmsley itself has a lot on offer. Within walking distance of the house there are nice pubs, good restaurants, deli’s and even a beautiful ruined castle to wander around, so much so that you don’t really need to leave. Some favourites of ours include Summat's Brewin, a small microbrewery & pub which provides delicious local craft beer and then around the town square there are The Feathers, The Black Swan or The Feversham Arms. Then just outside Helmsley, there are also the Hare at Scawton and in Harome the Star Inn and The Pheasant. Manions is a gorgeous, small cafe that serves homemade gourmet food and great coffee. Also, the stunning five acre walled gardens (open from April to October) and its beautiful vine house cafe are truly unique. Then there is The Cafe on the Square, ideal for delicious cakes, light food and views over the market square and, not to forget, Ryeburn’s ice cream parlour offering award winning homemade ice cream. And just 10 minutes walk away from the house, is the Helmsley lido which is open daily between 11:45 and 19:00, from mid-June to early September.
  • Olivia's house is absolutely perfect. We felt so at home and fell in love with the place instantly. It is a amazing space with everything you could possible need and more. The location is perfect literally a 2 minute walk to pubs, shops, restaurants and cafes. We would highly recommend this, extremely good value for money, home from home.

  • A real hidden gem. A beautiful cottage with a really thoughtful host who went the extra mile and made our honeymoon stay so special and memorable. The cottage is immaculate and full of the charm anyone would want for a beautiful Yorkshire cottage. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay again and would recommend highly to all our friends and family

  • We were very fortunate to be the first Airbnb guests in the lovely home. Olivia is a fantastic host, very thoughtful and brilliant at communicating with us. The house is wonderful. Great town centre location, garden, parking, wonderful sitting rooms and wood burning stoves ( with fire guards) , a fantastic kitchen with everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable and the place was sparkling clean. A real gem of a high quality holiday rental. Our two toddlers were very well catered for with equipment and cots and toys.

Beautiful 19th century stone cottage in Oswaldkirk with excellent views over the Howardian Hills. This holiday cottage offers a cosy home away from home at any time during the year. Situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors National Park, there is excellent walking right from the doorstep. All welcome, including children and one dog.
Cosy cottage with everything you need for a self catering holiday. Master bedroom with double bed and a small bedroom with a cabin style bed which is slightly narrower and shorter than a standard double bed. Comfortable lounge with a multi fuel burner and dining area. Fully equipped kitchen with utility area. Shower room with shower cubicle. Patio area has a table and seating for 4 with beautiful views over the Howardian Hills. Reserved off street parking in a small private car park.
Oswaldkirk is a small village just a few miles from Ampleforth and Helmsley. Helmsley is a lovely market town with a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. There are lots of lovely places to visit including York and Whitby. Fresh eggs can be collected from a few doors down. Just collect your eggs and leave the money in the honesty box.
  • Beautiful cottage in the Yorkshire countryside, close to many places to visit and discover on foot or by bicycle. Helmsley with its wonderful park, York with its typical architecture, Howard Castle, Whitby on the sea and Scarborough. The cottage is ideal for 3 or 4 people, warm (we were at Christmas for a week!) And collected but with everything you need and in any case bigger than what we expected. It is very accurate in detail and very clean. There was a welcome gift (red and white wine, tea and coffee, milk in the fridge and dry pastries) very appreciated. We didn't see Karen, but she was very kind and quickly replied to the messages.

Beech nut shepherds hut is a wonderful space to relax in and slow your life down. Furnished simply and elegantly, it is the perfect place to escape and switch off the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You'll be surprised how spacious the hut feels, it's so roomy with a high ceiling. Plenty of cosy throws for curling up around the fire pit to watch the stars, wonderful walks straight from the hut and a freshly baked loaf of bread to wake to, what more could you need....
The shepherds hut is nestled in a corner of an apple, damson and pear orchard at the bottom of the owners garden. Secluded by trees and with wonderful views from your doorstep, it's a very serene place to stay. The hut can house two adults in the double bed, plus one child in the day bed, a travel cot can also fit easily. Whilst luxurious, this is still 'glamping' and so a short walk must be made across the garden to visit the toilet and shower room. This is accessed by the owners utility room where you will also have your own small fridge, worktop area, microwave, kitchen sink, washer, drier and access to freezer. An electric stove, kettle, beautiful dresser, sound system, toaster, book selection, throws, log burner, complementary logs, towels and bedding are all included in your stay. The hut is situated on a working farm, but hopefully any mooing, baa-ing and the occasional woof won't intrude on your stay! You are welcome to wander around, ask questions and collect fresh eggs from the hens if it interests you. Fresh baked bread for your first morning is included, with the option or ordering adding on extras- smoked salmon platter, porridge with cream, honey and spices, fruit platter or a patisserie selection at an addition cost. They can be delivered to the hut or left in the utility room for you to collect at your leisure.
The nearest small town is Stamford bridge, a five minute car drive. Useful for co op, butchers, pharmacists, cafes and a couple of ok pubs. Some wonderful traditional and gastro pubs are all close by too. York, Whitby, Scarborough, Leeds robin hoods bay, Filey, Helmsley and Beverley are all within driving distance and are wonderful places to visit.
  • A beautiful shepherds hut in a lovely location with friendly hosts. As other reviewers have said, warm enough in January :)

    Sally2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful cottage and a place I would recommend to others to stay. Although it was a bit tricky to find at first, Catherine and her husband were very kind and hospitable. The cottage and utility room were very clean and had lovely touches including a home cooked breakfast which was delicious!

  • Lived our stay. Was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and take the dogs

    Beca2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The shepherds' hut was a very relaxing stay. With the freshly baked bread and other amenities it was a lovely place to have a slow breakfast in the sunshine and then spend the afternoon exploring York. I stayed at the end of October and it was lovely and warm in the hut.

    Elizabeth2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely escape just outside of York, travelled at the end of October and was very warm and cosy inside the hut. Lovely touches like fresh bread in the morning and was really quiet to say it's on a working farm. Thank you Catherine and family for having me :)

    Kelly2019-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Enjoyed our stay at the Shepherds Hut, helped by glorious weather. It's much more spacious than you'd imagine and well equipped. We loved being on a working farm- it certainly makes you appreciate how hard they work, especially during harvest and yet still had time for a quick chat. If you like a rural location, but within easy reach of a historical city, coast and other attractions we'd definitely recommend it as a place to stay that's a bit different.

    Paula2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Nice setting in an orchard on a farm. Lovely and quiet.. Little walk to nice shower and toilet, but easy to get to.

    Mark2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Really beautiful shepherd’s hut located in the farm’s orchard. Kitchen facilities and shower were located in the main house’s utility room about 20 seconds walk away from the shepherd’s Hut. Great base for exploring the North Yorkshire moors and seaside areas. Highly recommended.
