Places to stay in Helena Bay

Places to stay in Helena Bay
My place is good for Solo Adventurers. This room has a very comfortable king single bed. My place is a few minutes from town by car yet set into the bush. If you need a double bedroom I have another listing "Cosy Artsy Retreat set into native Bush." I welcome walkers on Te Araroa - The Great Walk. If you would like a meal I can provide one for you. Let me know in advance. Price negotiable. Please check in after 4:30 pm as I work at a school and am usually at school until that time
My place is small and unique. It is a Lockwood house built in 1965 which features an atrium garden. The house is set into native bush at the back yet is very close to the centre of Whangarei. The is a stream at the bottom of the gully which sings merrily after heavy rain.
This is a very quiet street with native birds flying around frequently. Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a short walk down the hill. This is a subtropical garden with many pleasant walks spread over many acres. It also has a cool cafe..The Quail Cafe.
  • A lovely place to stay.

  • Hopefully Julie is able to copy my comment I already sent, into the public review section ..... as I did not realise this was separate to what I had already sent. Cheers Judith

  • Julie is a lovely, caring host. Her house is a stylish place, very close to the city, but with trees and birds surrounding it. Very nice stay and very good value. Loved it.

  • A lovely home. Julie is a wonderful host full of local knowledge and life experience. Made delicious home baked bread in the mornings. Comfortable room in a nice quiet neighbourhood. Would definitely stay there again!

  • Beautiful cozy house built around a garden - how cool is that!?? Calm and quiet street, I enjoyed the birdsong from the nearby bush 😊😊

  • Julie is a warm host, helpful and keen to make sure her guests are fine. The room is spacious, the bed very cozy. Bathroom and kitchen are shared with Julie and the other guests. I felt very at home with Julie and I can highly recommend her.

A peaceful and self-contained, brand new hill side Glamping-Pod, over looking mature native bush sweeping down to the Whananaki estrury, out over the Poor-Kinghts-Island and westwards rural country views. The Glamping-Pod is fully equipped with kitchenette, sink with hot water, LED-lights, queen-size sleeping platform for two adults and a cozy lounge suit. The Glamping-Pod is located only 10 minutes with the car from the most beautiful beaches Northlands (Mimiwhangata, Teal Bay, Helena Bay)
Internal space 2.4m x 4m gothic arch shape nordic style pine Glamping-Pod with deck, fully equipped kitchenette, incudes a queen-size sleeping platform. Electricity, LED-lights and running hot water. Fully insulated and double glazed windows. Patio Furniture. There is a composting toilet beside the Glamping-Pod and the guest will have access to the flush toilet in the main building.
  • The pod was a great place to stay with such a gorgeous view! The perfect spot to explore the region too.

  • Very clean, very stylish place. Lovely views of the bush, perfect for a bit of rest and relaxation with amazing beaches just a few minutes away! Highly recommend

  • You will enjoy hospitality from a warm, friendly family, and will become a part of their vision for their future. You can expect to see lovely rural and forest views extending all the way from the heights you're on to the Whananaki Estuary and the Poor Knights Islands in the east, and way across the often misty hills to the west. You'll have a tranquil stay without the noise of traffic - just the sounds of nature, including the calls of moreporks and kiwis. The well-insulated, glamping-style Pod is cute, cozy and welcoming, fitted out with the touches that Anna seems to bring to everthing she does. It gives all the privacy you desire and facilities you need. An owner-built, recycled-materials, composting toilet is nearby but a flush toilet and shower for your private use are also available 30 seconds away in the family house. The Pod has only recently been installed so landscaping has still to be done, but even now the experience is worth every penny!

  • Beautiful location

    Kali2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had the privilege of being Anna and Adams’s first booking at their brand new Ruru Pod, and it doesn’t get better than this: We arrived late at night and were assured along the way not to stress, which made us feel very welcomed and added just that little extra to the ‘customer’ experience. The pod itself is brand new, sparkling clean and just ADORABLE ! Plenty of parking space, great views all around, interior is beautiful, quaint and cozy. We had a great sleep on the upstairs platform, with nice firm mattress. There’s tea, coffee and microwave ready for a cuppa or a snack. The surrounding property is just beautiful, located on top of a hill, with a gravel road access. All that has been topped by meeting Anna and Adam in person. Thank you both for a great start to our trip and a heartwarming chat.

We are just off the main road (Sometimes road noise can be annoying but not loud). The house is quite old but I am in the process of updating it. You’ll have unlimited access to the TV in the lounge, Wifi, our new kitchen and of course the trampoline. Not much is near by so please come prepared with food before arriving (although I can provide dinner, Tea and coffee)
There isn't much around. There is a G.A.S station 2km away and a pub 3km away. Other than that the nearest town is about 20km away.
  • Excellent hosts. Very communicative and hospitable.

    Lucie2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • We can get some NZ experiences in their house. And we enjoyed to play the trampoline with their son.

Restful peaceful and quiet my house is set in the forest yet close to town. I have another room listed separately "Comfy single room with kauri tree view." Wake to the sound of native birds calling and see pigeons - kereru - tui and fantails as they dip and glide over the house. Kiwi call at night and sometimes come to your window. Please note that the house is about a 40 minute walk from the bus stop. I might be able to pick you up. Contact me. Come take your load off and refresh.
This is a smaller house made of solid wood and its bush setting gives it the feel of a tramping hut on a trail. Its sunny and warm and has a heat pump for winter warmth. Its is very quiet and peaceful and almost retreat like yet it is very close to the centre of town.
My place is a short walk from from Whangarei Quarry Gardens a beautiful rambling subtropical beauty with its own cafe with very yummy cakes and and coffees. My place is also very close to bush walks up into the Coronation Forest, a small Lake stocked with many rainbow trout for anglers and the local stadium is virtually a hop step and a jump away for fitness sessions.
  • What a beautiful place to stay! Julie is a sweet person and we absolutely loved her homemade bread and apricot jam!! Cosy & clean. Smooth communication and easy to find. Would def stay again!!

    Sabina2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • To say that Julie’s place is the best Airbnb in New Zealand is an understatement! It’s probably the best in the world. She was incredibly kind and welcoming, and even made us freshly baked bread for breakfast! Her home was clean, lovely, and in a great location. Really couldn’t have asked for more, she went above and beyond what I expected. Thanks for everything Julie!

  • Words cannot express how much we enjoyed our stay with Julie. She is a wonderful host and made everyone in her presence feel welcomed. She's always smiling and had many interesting stories to tell. She helped us with rides to and from the intercity bus stop and with getting groceries a couple times. Her place is homey and has a unique charm, we loved the center garden and all of the bird song nearby. The daily homemade bread and spreads were amazing! Her place was always clean and the wifi was good. We highly recommend staying with Julie at her place if you're in Whangarei, we will miss you Julie!

  • We had such a lovely stay in Julie's home. She is a great host, always joyful, and very helpful to provide tips on the best spots to visit. She also provides a nice breakfast with everything homemade which is a nice touch. The room was beautiful and clean. The toilet and shower were clean and new. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook. Common areas were cozy! I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to anyone who want to spend time in Whangarei.

For comfortable and relaxing accommodation that won’t break the bank the Artists Studio is the one. Located near Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, the studio was built next to the original 1870’s Taumarere homestead. Isobelle and Bill aim to make your stay as welcoming and comfortable as possible and hope you enjoy your time in the Bay of Islands. You are more than welcome to help us feed the animals on our family friendly lifestyle block and learn some of the history surrounding this beautiful homestead. The Studio is equipped with a fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave, but there are no other cooking facilities. You are welcome to share our kitchen to make your evening meal. We live on a farmlet (8 acres) and have a few cows, chickens and a dog. Approximately two acres of gardens surround the homestead. Golfing and gardening are our main interests and we volunteer at the local Museum/Library once a week. The Twin Coast cycle trail is right on our door, as is the old steam train Gabrielle that runs from Kawakawa to Taumarere station.
  • As advertised. Lovely!

  • I LOVED this place. Excellent location - very quiet, just off main road. Great to get to Waitangi Treaty Ground, Paihia etc. The photos on air bnb don’t show off the wonderful features of the place! The room is big and there is a corner with sofa and two rocking chairs, there’s a big bed and a single in another corner. The bathroom and toilet are separate and there’s everything we needed, microwave, fridge, etc. This was my favourite air bnb in NZ! Thanks so much Bill & Isobelle, you’re the best hosts.

    Jarina2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Best AirBnB experience we had during our NZ-trip. Lovely little private house with everything you need, and also tasteful furnishings and art. Very good value for money. We only wished we could have stayed longer.

Only 200m from the start of the Cape Brett track or the Water Taxi is available for hire. Kitchen caters for up to 6 people at one time with toilet/shower shared with other guests. Free use of kayaks and spa pool which must be requested at booking and also overnight parking when walking the track. Other rooms available if needed, please ask

Most of us who live in Rawhiti are related so it is a very safe and friendly area.
  • Stayed a night. Very good location doe Whangamumu track and went to see the whaling station.

  • This place was an absolute dream! George and Louise were fantastic hosts, they went above and beyond to make our stay special. The location was great, and the space had every thing we needed. This was a very memorable stay and we highly recomend it

    Angela2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • It was a wonderfull experience to stay at the house and to get to know Bob and Louise. We felt so much welcome! Highly recommended to stay there!

    Georg2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the most extraordinary Airbnb experiences I've ever had! Not only was the place incredibly beautiful and peaceful, right next to the beach surrounded by old trees. I also was lucky to learn a lot about Maori culture, to join Bob on his water taxi trips for free and to go out for fishing one night. If you are interested in an insight into Maori family life and happy to spontaneously jump on the boat, when Bob gets a call for a taxi ride, I highly recommend to stay at this place!

    Tanja2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Such an awesome place to stay. Would definitely recommend for a nice couple get away weekend. Awesome hospitality, great rooms and such a nice place to relax.

    Caylah2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Louise and Bob are fantastic. They involved us with their workshops (weaving, balm making, bread making) and water taxi rides, fishing and teaching us about their culture and local insights. They live in the perfect magical location and we had a great stay. The amenities are shared and have everything you require and are very clean. Bed was super comfortable and there’s a nice cool breeze at night. You can use the kayaks and hire the SUP’s and go on guided JetSki rides. We never got time to do this as we were out and about with Bob sightseeing and Brian fishing at night!!!! In the morning, walk a short stroll to the coffee caravan! Opens at 10am The Bay out the front of the house is perfect for kids and it’s only a short distance, 300m by car (or walk) then up stairs to sandy Oke bay which is also beautiful.

  • Great stay, perfect location. Can’t beat this for value

    Will2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful place, right on the beach. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay which included kayaking on the clear blue water, staring up at more stars than I've ever seen in my life, waking up to a beautiful view and taking a water taxi tour around the Bay of Islands (courtesy of Louise and Bob). Highly recommended.

This is a private 30 acre farm with a lovely beach, which is about 30 metres away from the cabin with spectacular views You can enjoy safe swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing off the rocks, scenic coastal walks and more. Be at one with nature here.
This cabin sits around the corner from our house and is private from the house is a free standing building. The cabin deck is facing the beach and has wonderful views . The room has a comfy queen bed, a small refrigerator, plug in two hob cooker, microwave, electric fry-pan, toaster, kettle, etc. There is a 42" TV setup for DVDs only, we have with some cult classic kiwi DVDs and many others DVDs . From your room you walk out to the deck facing the beach which has seating, lovely place to relax for two. On the other side of the deck is a cute bathroom. If you have just arrived from Overseas I would suggest you stop in Whangarei to do some shopping perhaps at PACnSAVE or Countdown. We do have a local store with limited supplies or we can help if you arrive late in the day. We have kayaks that you can use. There are several surfing beaches approx. 10 minutes away. If you are a keen fishing person we can guide you to them, just bring your own gear and the store has good bait and good prices. If you wish to bring your own boat there are two boat launching places, one just around the corner the other 10 minutes away. There are some great walks in the area, short and long. We are very close to the Te Araroa - The Long Pathway - which is the walkway through NZ. On our property we have a Maori lookout Pah site which you can walk up to and further enjoy more wonderful views. There are other walks including walking the longest foot bridge in the Southern Hemisphere and visiting the crystal clear lagoon in the area. This is a great place to set up as a base. You can visit other parts of the Tutukaka Coastline which is about 45 minutes south from here and has some great Restaurants and lovely beaches and beach walks. Catch a boat from there to the Poor knights and see this astounding place to snorkel and dive. If you would like to see some local history go to Waitangi which is north just under an hour away and visit the treaty grounds. If you would like to go to Russell is just under an hour away by a very scenic road. There is also the Helena Bay Cafe which has a fantastic collection of only New Zealand art work and a cafe with lovely views open for brunch or a late lunch is only 35 mins away. A place to relax or enjoy lots of activities. There is a local store which has all the basics foods and and fish and chips is open 8.30am to 5.30pm. 2.5 hours from Auckland and you can be here in our peaceful retreat.
Uncrowded with pristine coastal area and friendly locals.
  • This location is a semi isolated heaven . Tea is helpful and lovely host. Thank you Tea .

    Gerard2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing spot.. if you like getting off the beaten track a bit Tea’s place is amazing. Fantastic outlook over a beautiful beach and everything you need for a good time👍🏻

  • Wow, stunning bay! Beautiful special place not to be missed.

    Jamie2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful piece of paradise. Great to visit and enjoy some of the best beach scenery NZ has to offer.

    Glenn2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Tea greeted us upon our arrival and was even kind enough to help us bring in a couple bags. The space was even more cozy and stylish than the pictures. But that view in the pictures is spot on! Beach is right out front and provided beautiful swimming and paddling. If you enjoy being a beach bum, this is truly the spot to be! Kitchen has the bare essentials for what you need if you plan to dine in. Tea and her husband also provided a small BBQ grill for us to cook on one of the nights. Otherwise, the one place in the village that does takeaways has some super yummy fish and chips/burgers n stuff. Get groceries though in Whangerei before you head to Whananaki. Not much at local store. Only downside to the location is that it takes an hour to go anywhere else to see/do things apart from a handful of local trails and walks. We also loved the company of Tea's affectionate cat too! Loved feeling like we had our own little slice of heaven for a few days. Only other criticisms are that the room gets a bit stuffy when it's hot out and can get buggy from having the windows/slider open for fresh air, and the matress is a bit on the soft side. Tea's place was just what we were looking for, and we appreciated all her helpful tips on the area! Would definitely go back!

    Mel2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Everything you could ask for in an off the beaten track stay! Right on an empty beach with amazing views. Exactly what we were looking for.

    James2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had such an amazing stay, words cannot describe how magical this bnb was. We had gorgeous views of the water right from our little private deck. We were able to use the kayaks that Tea provides at our leisure and explored the bay. We hope to be back one day!

Our guest house is attached to our home but like a little motel unit for your privacy and enjoyment yet you are free to wander around the property and meet the farm animals and explore.
We are located 25 minutes drive North of Whangarei City 7 Minutes North of Hikurangi Township 30 Minutes South of Kawakawa and 55 Minutes South of Paihia and the beautiful Bay of Islands - If you love watersports we are 10 minutes from the new Adrenaline Adventre Park

  • Had a lovely stay at Alana's, peaceful rural setting with beautiful view across the rolling hills. Unit was self-contained and very clean and had all the amenities we needed including a nice comfortable bed. Enjoyed our chats with John and Alana and wandering around the paddocks with the horses.

    Peter2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great place to stay in gorgeous surroundings. It was clean and comfortable and our hosts went out of their way, even sectioning off a paddock to accommodate our horses. Highly recommended.

    Anne2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Very welcoming and fun hosts. The room is perfectly clean, with its own bathroom, a kitchen (with cereal, milk and coffee) and a terrace with stunning views. Also on the terrace is a barbecue. Your morning starts with crowing :) Highly recommend!

Most people remark on how quiet and peaceful our location is. We also have another cottage, with a queen bed and bunk beds. If you have an extended family wishing to holiday together, you are welcome to book both cottages, if they are both available. This site is ideal for boaties, with ample parking room and only 6 minutes away from launching options. We are happy to host young children, and I can provide a portacot. Oakura Bay has a general store with petrol and dive fills available, and a Takeaway store.
Visit the Gallery Cafe, just up the road, which is great for lunches and has amazing views and spectacular art for sale. Our area is quite remote and you will need to bring your food with you.
  • Sue and Alistair are amazing hosts, we had a lovely one night stay at the Love Shack. The place was clean and well equipped in a really peaceful and quiet environment. Highly recommended, would definitely stay here again!

    Andrew2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place in little garden paradise. Beautiful, clean, peaceful. Sue was a great host for us.

    Peter2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Sue offers two beautiful, spacious and clean cabins in addition to what it takes to prepare a breakfast for two days. His house is far from the road in a very pleasant country setting and if you are looking for a peaceful place between Russell and Matapouri, this is the ideal place.

    Serge2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Sadly, I only was able to stay one night (don't do that ... stay longer), but the property is beautiful … the location is safe and quiet … internet was fast … living/bedroom and bath room were spacious … meal prep was easy … everything needed was provided … host was lovely, as were the dog and cat.

    Diana2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • This shack had everything we needed and was just cute and comfy with the reclining chairs! We wanted to stay longer! It is quite isolated so make sure you have bought some food on your way but then enjoy the sound of the cricket and Sue’s lovely dog :)

    Lara2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A quiet spot off the beaten track, with lovely welcoming touches. Cabins are well appointed and tastefully renovated.

    Roger2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great hospitality from Sue! The place was relaxing and beautiful in a peaceful rural setting. We extended our stay for an extra 2 nights because we enjoyed it so much, and Sue made it very easy to do so. Great location to base ourselves near the Bay of Islands.

    Charo2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • The Love Shack was awesome. We stayed one night and wish we'd been able to stay longer. The bed was comfortable, loved the shower. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything you'd need. We had a barbecue one night. The acommodation is on a lifestyle block, complete with cute and well behaved chickens, cats and a gorgeous wee poodle. Loved the cooling dip we had in the river at the bottom of the section. Sue and Alistair were very welcoming and friendly - perfect host. Loads of gorgeous beaches and bays to explore nearby. Our favourite beach was Picnic Bay (next to Puriri Bay). Oakura Bay was gorgeous too - and we had lovely fish and chips there - the fish was fresh and absolutely divine. All in all, a fabulous place for an Auckland couple to decompress and relax!

Our quaint, loved Tiny House, overlooking young fruit trees and former grazing paddock, is now available for your enjoyment. We are in rural Poroti, on the road between Whangarei, Kaikohe, and Dargaville. We are an easy 15-20 minute drive into Whangarei to the East and our location is close to both Highway 15 and 14 for easy access to the North and West. Previously our home for three years, the Tiny House shares our one hectare section with our new family home across the drive
Equipped with full kitchen and bathroom. The ceiling height in the kitchen and bathroom is 1.9 metres. The bed is in the loft and the stairs are somewhat steep - it is not possible to stand in the loft. The bed is Queen size and there is shelving and hanging space for clothes upstairs.
The Mangakahia Sports Complex and grounds (walking distance), Poroti Tavern (1-2 min drive), Maungatapere cafe and fuel station (~5 min drive)
  • The Tinyhouse was jmmacutely clean, amazing amenities, super comfortable bed after nights of camping, welcoming hosts, Netflix and more, hearty continental breakfast. Recommend 10/10.

I am well-travelled and know the importance of pleasant and enjoyable accommodation. Come and enjoy my lovely period bungalow located in a quiet cul-de-sac just 2 minutes drive from the central business district or an easy 10 minute flat walk. You will have a warm, cosy single room with a very comfy king single bed and good quality linen. Off-street private parking is available for peace of mind.
You are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare simple meals. Continental breakfast is provided as well as endless tea and coffee and alfresco dining on either the front or rear deck weather dependent.
If you appreciate great coffee Whangarei has some fabulous cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance or short drive. My favourite cafe is just 7 minute walk from home! The hospital is an easy 12 minute walk or 3-5 minute drive depending on traffic. Barge Park is 5 minute drive. Other handy amenities at the top of the road bakery, BP petrol station, hairdresser, Fish n' Chip takeaway, Chinese takeaway, convenience store (Dairy), Lotto shop for that lucky win!!, Liquorland, Dentist, florist, Medical Centre and Thai Massage. The laundromat is 5 minute walk.
  • You truly were the best part of my travels here! I will always think of you and we will see each other again! Thank you for being you!

  • If you are just passing through and looking for a clean and nice place to stay, this is the place for you. Robyn has thought of everything: self check-in, towels, water, fruit and even a little chocolate are waiting for you in the room. Numerous great bush/coastal walks, cycle trails and horse treks Art Galleries and world class diving at Tutukaka Helena Bay Cafe Gallery 30 min Drive Surf Sandy Bay - only 4 min drive Matapouri and Whale Bay 10 min drive Dive Tutukaka - coastal drive 20 min
Home and living area is shared with your hosts John and Carolyn . We do have another guest room which is occasionally rented in this case the bathroom facilities may be shared other guests but this is rare and only through the ' silly' season. Double bedroom with queen size bed which is super comfortable . Wifi is available but can be limited in the bedroom. No TV in room. We currently have a little dog called Cleo ( Maltese) who is adorable. I prefer no evening meals are cooked by guests, ( small kitchen ) however if the stay is more than two nights I will accommodate. There is a BBQ for your use in the warmer months. There are delicious local eateries on coast which Im happy to recommend. There is ample parking for camper or boat. No wheelchair access. If you love cycling I would suggest bringing bikes with you as the cycle trails are brilliant.
We are situated one on of the most scenic drives in NZ, the Tutukaka Coast Loop Road. Our neighborhood is safe and beautiful, no streets lights no traffic noise, no close neighbours.... Attractions Cafe and restaurants 20 minutes coastal or country drive away Take a day trip to the breathtaking Helena Bay Gallery, great food, NZ Arts and souvenirs Visit Tutukaka Gallery, take a memorable dive at the Poor Knight Islands, or maybe a 'bucket list' surf lesson with Tutukaka Surf, or simply relax at one of our wonderful restaurants. ( pre-order a 'snack box to take with you) Walk/cycle/horse trek the Whananaki Trail or simply enjoy a stroll toTane Moana (giant Kauri) If your a gardener visiting the Quarry Gardens in Whangarei is a must..

  • My Wife and I have stayed here before and what wowed us brought us back and we weren’t disappointed. Feeding the goats and sheep, the amazing breakfast, with fresh bread and cute little dog, were just some of the touches. Carolyn and John are great hosts and provide the best hospitality and local advice. We will definately be back soon!

    Jayde2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had the most amazing stay at Carolyn's place. The place itself was so cosy and stylish, and it was a refreshing escape from the city life. What made our trip so special was the warm and inviting feeling that Carolyn and John gave us as soon as we arrived. It was so easy to talk to them like we had known them for ages. Loved the breakfasts and the farm animals were an added bonus. Carolyn is definitely the no. 1 place to stay in Matapouri. We will definitely come back again purely to visit Carolyn and John.

    Nancy2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend away at Carolyn and John's cozy cabin tucked away in the countryside. Carolyn is the perfect host in helping you find places to eat, activities to do, and local tips. The bedroom and bathroom was lovely and the outdoor areas offer a great place to enjoy the views. I loved getting to feed and meet all the animals in their paddock. In short, we felt genuinely welcomed into their home and cared for during our entire stay. We highly recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxed accommodation in wonderful company :) We would love to come back again!

This magical bay offers a beachfront bach in one of the most beautiful coastal areas of Northland. The bach is situated at the right hand corner of Taiwawe Bay with the main farm house at the other end. It is an ideal place to bring the whole family, launch your boat, go for walks on the farm or just relax by the water. A second bach next to this one is available as an "over-flow" but will not be rented out separately. The cost is $200 - $300, depending on season.
Great coastal walks in the area and on the farm with stunning views

  • We stayed a couple nights and had a lovely time. It took us about 5 minutes to walk to Pond Hut from where we parked the car. The walk to the hut makes it really special - beautiful journey through lots of native trees. We suggest bringing candles and mosquito repellent. As architectural designers we were very inspired with the place Bob has created - it truely is so sensitive to its surroundings & lots of clever DIY details. Looking forward to trying out Bobs other place Tui Cabin next time. Tui cabin is a bit closer to the car parking area and higher up on the hill. We recommend staying here - if you are ok with no electricity & composting toilet (part of its charm we think!)

Very suitable for self-isolation as we have just added cooking facilities. A small and warm modern cabin with an amazing view over the sea to the Poor Knights Islands. The cabin enjoys all day sun and is well insulated. It has a King bed and a small table and chairs. Handy for Sandy Bay surf beach and other beautiful beaches.
This cabin is >100m away from the owners house so is quiet private. There's an outside and inside hot shower. Outside and inside table and chairs. No kitchen but a 3 burner stove top on a table outside and a 1 burner inside, a kettle, microwave and toaster for your breakfast and a cool box. Inside cassette type toilet, that uses a manual water flush and an outside long-drop type toilet. Neither smell and are very easy to use. 10 minutes to the Matapouri store where they do takeaways and 15 minutes to Tutukaka cafes and shops.
The cabin is in a field overlooking the coast surrounded by trees.
  • Great little place! Very close to Sandy Bay if you're into your surfing and the views are incredible for such an affordable price. Julia and her husband were very nice people. Would recommend.

The Annex is an older building that was a sleepout. It has two bedrooms and a living/ dining area, with a wood fire, sink, fridge, hot plate and microwave. There is a small shower room and separate toilet. It is situated on a farmlet with harbour views, 7km south of the city centre , one hundred metres up an unsealed driveway off State Highway One. This is a busy main road, so there can be road noise. It is a working farmlet, our hens free range and our trees drop leaves and small branches.
There is NOT a full kitchen - only a fridge, hot plate, microwave, kettle and toaster. Tea, coffee, cup of soup , cereals, bread, butter and condiments are included. The living area has a TV and DVD player with some DVD's. There are plenty of books to read. I have made sure the beds are really comfortable. You are totally private, if that is your wish. The free WiFi code is in the Information booklet if you have a laptop. You may use our washing machine or dryer for no charge.
We are in a semi rural area with only a few houses around us. Whangarei CBD is 7 kms from us and has many good cafes and restaurants which you will find in our information folder. There are a number of good walks and cycle tracks and many parks. The sub tropical Quarry garden is worth a visit and there is an Arts Quarry as well. The lookout on Parihaka gives you views across the city. There is a picturesque drive along the harbour's edge out to Ocean Beach and there is a nice cafe towards the end of it. About 20 min south is the historical Scottish settlement of Waipu with its small museum. An hour SW is the unique Kauri museum and the Bay of Islands is only about 40min north of us. We have numerous beaches both harbour and ocean within half an hour's drive all around us and there is the famous deep sea fishing base at Tutukaka about 40 min drive NE of us.

    Sabine2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Staying in Eilean's annexe was a great experience and the little things, such as all the choice of breakfast things, including fresh eggs from their own chickens and the home made brownies made the stay quite unique. The location was wonderful, only 100m away from the road, but it felt like staying right in the countryside and was so peaceful. I would love to stay there again if I ever make it back that way.

The Cottage at Wai Rua, west of Whangarei, is approximately 18 minutes drive from Kamo via Pipiwai Road. It is a hidden gem with amazing rural views, including massive volcanic rocks, lakes and ponds, set in a beautiful tranquil garden. It can be a getaway retreat or stopover.
Don't be put off by the metal road, you won't regret what you find at our place. The cottage is far enough away from the main house to give plenty of privacy but close enough to join us for a meal or glass of wine. The kunekune pigs will "talk" to you from their paddock and the hens will provide you with fresh eggs for your breakfast (if you wish). The orchard provides fresh fruit depending on the season.
This is a rural area surrounded by farmland. The closest place (5 minutes down the road) to get food is the local fuel station which also has a very good takeaway kitchen and country style cafe for breakfast and lunches. Otherwise it is a 20 minute drive. There is a forest walk close by and Whangarei is a lovely town with great cafes and walkways.
  • Fantastic place to stay, great scenery, beautiful surroundings with brilliant hosts. Could not have been made more welcome.

  • If you are looking to stay anywhere near Whangarei, it doesn’t get better than here. A totally magical spot, private, views, stunning cottage, hot tub, such a friendly welcome from the host.. and the grounds. wetland areas, stunning volcanic rocks... if there is availability on the dates you are planning, don’t hesitate to book this amazing cottage. Will be a highlight of our NZ vacation. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

  • After a long couple of days on the road it was lovely to get to Elaine's place to relax a bit. The property is located about 20 min from town via an easy drive, it is peaceful, stunning scenery and the hot tub a must. I enjoyed a run on the 12km Parihaka trail course which was a great sampler of the falls area and then headed out to Mount Manaia a short steep hike to a view. Elaine's place was perfectly placed to do both very easily. The property was wonderful and private and as i sat in the hot tub i was quite amused by the three piggies and the ducks that wandered past. Elaine was super friendly and welcoming and was my NZ mum for two nights! Thank you for looking out for me Elaine! I would def recommend this stay if you are looking for a quiet beautiful stay that's still close to town!

    Karina2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Hosts are friendly and welcoming. Cottage is beautiful and lots of lovely touches like breakfast things. So enjoyed the stay. Would recommend to all.

    Emma2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • We would definitely recommend Elaine's please to everyone.

    Trevor2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Can’t recommend this off-the-beaten-track sanctuary enough. From a stunning, sparkling cottage, to one of the most comfortable beds we’ve stayed in, to Elaine’s warm greeting and personal farm tour she gave us (taking time from her busy day, particularly chasing after naughty kunekune piggies!!) explaining the conservation-based vision they have for the area (amazing Kauri trees on the property!), to the delicious breakfast provisions provided, my goodness, you’d be missing out to not stay here. We spent a lovely evening checking out the ponds, the piggies/chickens/ducks/cows, and envying the incredible orchard. The absolutely best plums we’ve ever had - like biting into a juicy piece of heaven!! Wish we’d had the time to stay longer to swim in the wonderfully warm solar-heated pool. Do yourself a favour and experience this wonderful farm, and Elaine and Allen’s hospitality. Thanks for the memories, we hope to be back.

    Michelle2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Paradise on earth. Lovely cottage, large rooms, everything provided, and if something is missing, just ask. Lovely hosts. Covered veranda and wide eves, so you can find shade ( or sun) at any time of day. Cottage is set in its own secluded section of garden. BBQ on terrace. Wonderful views over glorious garden and strange rock formations to the hills. Easy access to small swimming pool. You can walk round the huge garden and the lake at the bottom or go further and see the animals on the farm tracks. (Piglets broke out into the orchard while we were there).

Cosy room in Whangārei. Walking distance to the town center. Amazing views over the harbour from the house. Up a quiet right of way with no traffic... Very peaceful at night. Set into Mt Parihaka.. Plenty of bird song in the morning. Walking tracks up the mountain close to the house. Very chill house occupants. 1 cat and 1 puppy live here (he's super friendly and as big as a cat).
The nightly rate is for the room only. Because we run a commercial catering business from home we cannot allow use of the kitchen however we can prepare you one of our gourmet freezer meals for $10 per person - payable upon arrival. Close to the hospital, Northtec and the city this new modern studio apartment has everything to make your stay special. Perfect for short or longer stays for the single sophisticated visitor, quiet, secure with parking at the door and your own courtyard and BBQ. The king single is very comfortable and the WiFi is included
The studio is annexed to a beautiful villa from 1909. It has a comfortable king single bed, shower and toilet and a small kitchen/dining/living room
Close to Northtec, just a 5 minute walk. Just off the main highway to Bay of Islands and easy access to the city
  • The place is very convenient. Both Jan and Beryl are very welcoming and hospitable. Definately should consider.

  • Beryl and Jan are fantastic hosts! The place was very clean and the perfect size for me, and Beryl and Jan were so welcoming and helpful. The location is perfect for walking to the hospital. I wish I could have stayed longer. 5+ stars. Thank you Beryl and Jan!

    Laura2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very lovely and cordial hosts!

    Natascha2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Jan & Beryl are among the kindest hosts you can find. They greeted me upon arrival, helped me settle in, and then left me to my space, but left a door open in case I needed anything. The cottage is the sweetest little space, perfect for one person looking to explore Whangarei. The internet was a little spotty, so if you're looking to do work or school while there, just have a chat with Jan and he'll help get things sorted out. If you have a car or are looking to do plenty of walking, the location is not an issue - it's just a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive to the center of the action. They left milk, bread, cereal, coffee, tea, & eggs for breakfasts, which was a very nice touch and much appreciated.

    Elizabeth2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • This place was just right for me as a solo traveller. The location was brilliant for travelling in the around the north of the island.

  • Awesome, thoughtful touches, generous hospitality, perfect little nooks for reflection and meals. Loved it.

  • This was a great little place for a short stay in Whangarei. Jan and Beryl are onsite and helped with check-in and any assistance while we were there. The little studio was clean and comfortable, with all the essential amenities needed for our stay. It was close to town and a great value. We'd definitely recommend to other travelers. The neighbors had fireworks for a party on a weekend night, but it was cool to see and didn't bother us.

This lovely spacious apartment is only 3 kms drive from Paihia and a 15 minute walk to the Haruru Falls. It includes a living area, and separate bedroom which can sleep 3 people. It also has a separate bathroom and kitchen. 5 minutes away in Paihia are a variety of cruises, tours, golf course, kayaking etc so come and enjoy our outdoor playground. There is a lovely little courtyard outside the lounge door for you to relax with a wine The Bay of Islands is a beautiful area so come and enjoy
Relaxing atmosphere and gardens to enjoy if you wish. Enjoy the courtyard and have a bbq and wine on a lovely summers night. As well as being close to many tourist attractions there is now a new footpath that links Paihia with Haruru Falls so you can take the walk to Paihia or walk through the bush. There are many lovely walking tracks in Paihia and Opua also if you enjoy walking.
We are a small suburb 3 km out of Paihia, with a dairy and a takeaway shop for your convenience. You will hear the waterfalls in the background and especially at night when all is still. We also have quite a bit of bird life around our area. You may see wood pigeons, tui, fantails, ducks, herons....... the river to the waterfall is close. If you walk the bush track from Haruru Falls to Waitangi you will see many birds along the river. Ask us about these things and we are more than willing to help.
  • A lovely little spot just outside of Paihia. Everything you could ever need in a beautiful little spot. Dianne was very helpful and excellent host and would 100% recommend her place if you are planning a trip to the Bay of Islands!

  • Dianne's place is great, good spacious layout with great facilities. Also an awesome location, not far from the town and Countdown store if you happen to be self catering as we were. The only minor drawback is that Dianne doesn't have a WiFi which was a shame as we had to hammer our travel SIM for two days. If Internet is not an issue I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

    Roger2019-11-08T00:00:00Z

Want to spend a night or two on the top of the world? Look no further, you will not find better view than this. A 300 degrees ocean paradise! We call it Purring Views as it will make you purr even if you're a dog person ;) Our place is close to Beaches, surf, marina. You’ll love the outdoors space, the sunsets, the view. This Hut if for solo travellers or a child whose parents stay in another room. We have 4 options: the Tui Room, the Kiwi Room, the NutShell and the Hut.
In the Hut, you will experience a private camping experience in your own tiny cute space. Opportunity: book 1 night and stay an extra night for free against 3hrs of weed-eating. the morning after your 1st night. You will probably not find better views in the whole of Tutukaka. It is what's really really special about our place. Photos don't do it justice, so you'll have to see for yourself the amazing sunrises over the ocean and the Poor Knights and the mesmerizing sunsets over Wellington's Bay and Nhunguru Sand spit. At your disposal is a Hut (La Cabane) overlooking Wellington's bay and its stunning sunsets. You can also hire the Caravan that can sleep a couple and a child. Both have heating blankets in winter for toasty warm sleeps. By the Cabane, you will find a bush hot shower located within the trees. The toilets are at the bottom of the garden and are just for you. There is no cooking facilities, so you can either picnic or go to one of the restaurants at the Marina.
The property is located at the top of the beautiful Wellington's bay beach. It takes a minute by car or 10min by foot. Great swimming and kayak spot. At low/medium tide, you can walk all the way to Ngunguru through wonderful secluded bays. You can see the Poor Knights from the property and the departure for diving is at 5min drive at the Tutukaka Marina. Famous for consistent surf, Sandy Bay is located at 15min drive and beautiful Matapouri with its Mermaids pools at 10min drive. From Sandy Bay, you can walk or cycle a coastal track all the way to Whananaki. You can also walk to the light house from Tutukaka, 5min drive from here. In summer, you may want to attend one of our Roller Discos for 2 hours of fun and music on skates.

  • “”Ocean Purring Views”” Is just that, the most beautiful views from the sunrise to the sunset... I stayed in the Huia Hut and it was amazing... Your own personal shower outside and a bonus, it had hot water... There is a private toilet outside and yet again, with an amazing view from the loo... I would recommend this stay for someone after a great memory of this beautiful country...

    Michelle2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • The Hut is a gorgeous little space to call home, nestled rustically in the gardens on top of the headland. If are looking for an inexpensive place to connect to the outdoors, this is the perfect spot for you!

    Mike2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Best views in Tututkaka, hands down. Wake up to sunrise and check out the sunset later in the evening. The hut can be a bit noisy on a windy night, but it's all just pure nature. Would stay again!

Tui Cabin is a secluded bush cabin 2 km from one of New Zealand's most beautiful beaches . If you want to disconnect with technology and reconnect with nature the Tui Cabin is a great place to unwind .Gas cooker and gas shower . No electricity .Fire . This place is more like a traditional trampers hut than anything . Beds have a cover sheet and a pillow with pillow case . Bring your own sleeping bag or duvet and towel . Suitable for hardened outdoor people.
Secure parking available . The final 100meters to the cabin is accessed via a walking track .If you are staying at Tui Cabin for the first time please do not arrive after dark . The combination of minimal lighting , the dark woods and an unfamiliar environment can be daunting to some people .
Matapouri Bay is one of the loveliest beaches in NZ . Connected to Whale Bay by a network of bush tracks . About 5 km from Tutukaka and about the same to Sandy Bay (the best local surf beach )

I bring my bike as it is only a few minutes easy ride to the stunning Matapouri Bay! This has been my third visit and I'm planning another soon.

We have an inviting detached room on our property, which is separate from the house and where you will have your own entrance. We are a 15 minute drive from down town Whangarei (16km) and the location is ideal for a quiet stay away from the city, or as a stop over on your trip around Northland. The spacious room has a queen bed, drawers, TV, table and chairs, microwave, small fridge, toaster and kettle plus essential crockery and cutlery.
The toilet and bathroom is a shared space. It is located in the main house, approx 15 metres walk from your separate room. Tea, coffee and milk is provided (breakfast is not included). There are no kitchen facilities available, but you are welcome to use the appliances in your room (microwave, small fridge, toaster and kettle plus essential crockery and cutlery).
Maungatapere is a rural community, dominated by Maungatapere Mountain, an extinct volcano. The area has rich volcanic soil, which boasts many orchards. The stone walls (which you can view from the guesthouse) were built by former soldiers and are a key feature of the area. There is at least one paddock between our property and any neighbours, giving you privacy and space.

This is a child friendly house, and we have playground equipment setup in the backyard. We also have a massage chair in the lounge you are welcome to use.
We are 2 mins away from Four Squares, Pharmacy and the post shop. The Whangarei information Center is also just down the road with a playground.

Our place is close to bush walks, waterfalls, a river to swim in & great views. Beaches are near by. Art & culture, restaurants and shopping places are just 8-12 car min away. Yet many beaches & adventure activities are within relative short driving distance as well. You’ll love our place because of our gardens, native bush & wildlife. A comfy bed & spacious room with a nice ambiance invites you to relax and/or plan your adventures. We provide Guest Netflix via our Smart TV.
Our gardens and private bush walks invite you to relax and listen to birdsong and the near by Whangarei Falls. Tui, Parakeets, Quails, Pukekoh, Pheasants, Kingfishers and Wood pigeons (Kereru) are just some of our feathery friends that share our environment. You might even spot a Morepok (NZ owl) in the evening light. Close to our property is the beautiful 'Hatea' river, where you can take a swim on a hot summers day. You will find art and culture such as galleries, craft shops & the Hundertwasser sculpture, restaurants and dining as well as shopping places within 8-12 car minutes away from our property - yet many beaches and adventure activities are within a relatively short driving distance as well. Fishing, diving, snorkeling, boating, horse riding & kayaking are just a few things available to be explored at our nearby beaches. There is a great cycle track in the 'Town Basin', where you will also find a shop that hires bicycles. The 'Poor Knights' islands - a world famous marine sanctuary - is just 30 minutes 'down the road' - where you will find various boat companies that provide day trips. When you enter your abode you can enjoy a variety of art works, including a mini library for your entertainment during your stay. The place is right next to our house and we will try to answer any questions you might have - be it regarding your accommodation or regarding things to explore in Whangarei & Northland. We provide: crockery & utensils, electric jug, toaster, microwave, fridge, plunger, tea, instant coffee, sugar & milk - and some cookies :-) The comfy queen sized bed has pure cotton sheets & duvet covers. We will supply the WiFi password on your arrival. Our Smart TV and Guest Netflix provide a wide range of shows, current affairs and movies for your entertainment. The property is about 10 car minutes from the CBD yet still in close vicinity to many magnificent beaches. We will assist you in any way we can, but also respect your wish for privacy.
All our neighbours have either lifestyle blocks or little farms. As we live at the edge of a nature reserve, the environment is green, clean & lush. It has a quiet, serene and friendly atmosphere and the locals will help you in any way they can, if you approach them.

Small cabin overlooking Rocky Bay, Tutukaka and out to Sea. I double bed, coffee, tea and toast making appliances, small fridge. Separate bathroom with shower, toilet and hand basin. Towels and beach towels supplied. Walk down the driveway to private access beach. Five minute walk down bush track or short drive to Tutukaka Marina with restaurants, shops and a convenience store.
  • Very nice comfortable spotless cabin with a great view. Very quiet safe and within 4mins walk to Tutakaka harbour. Hostess was very nice, helpful and was there to greet us within a few minutes after calling her.

  • Lovely isolated cabin in very good condition. Listen to the owls at night and enjoy daytime walks. This was bliss!

  • The location of this cottage is superb. It is so peaceful and quiet and the views are spectacular. We felt so special having a private beach shared with just the handful of other houses down the private road and the occasional kayaker. It only takes a couple of minutes to walk there too (deceptively closer than it looks). The marina is also only a short walk away down the town’s tsunami evacuation track and I really do recommend walking there because the track is beautiful. Matapouri and the track to Whale Bay are a quick 10 minute drive away. So the cottage is ideally placed a short distance to some of the world’s most beautiful scenic spots. The breakfast provided was yummy (museli, yoghurt, bread, muffins) and the indoor/outdoor flow with the deck was fabulous - it’s so nice sitting out there eating breakfast.

  • Wonderful private cabin with the most amazing views, privacy and comfort. Situated at the top of a hill, the little cabin has all the amenities you need for a short stay. The cabin was perfectly cosy and homely with the most comfortable bed. Finally, the most wonderful part of the cabin was the fact that you can just step right out of the doorstep and gaze at the amazing starry nightsky while listening to the sounds of the beach in the background! Definitely recommend!
