Scratch Baking Co. opened up a satellite retail establishment just up the street, at an old gas station on the corner of Sawyer and Broadway. The Toast Bar is a quirky, bagel-breakfast-sandwich concept with bread and bagels served fresh out of their ovens next door. They also serve Coffee by Design. Toast Bar’s hours are 8 to 2 Thursday through Sunday. They are closed other days. To Walk:: 7 minutes.

The CIA Cafe (“Coffee-Ice Cream-Art”) is credited with practically single-handedly making nearby Knightville a cool place to come to. Not just coffee, ice cream and art, CIA serves up very tasty sandwiches and soup, and is a favorite place for people to work using their free wi-fi access. Their hours are 7 to 5. To Walk: about 30 minutes.

Across the Causeway there are several classic Portland breakfast places, most famous among them is Becky’s Diner, at 390 Commercial St in Portland. It’s solid American Diner food and the prices are reasonable, although it’s practically impossible to park within several blocks of the place during high season. Their hours are 4am to 9pm daily.
