To grab a metro card at the bottom of the escalators, it costs $2.00 to purchase plus any amount you'd like to load. Depending on how much you'll be traveling in a weekend, $10-20 should be fine. You can always reload as you go. The metro is safe, just be aware of your surroundings like any city. You can download the WMATA app to track when trains are coming.
