City/town information

Right on a river fed by glaciers, Talkeetna has zip lining, lots of awesome tourist shops, delicious dining and coffee shops. You can see Denali on clear days from the water. It's an adorable, small town with a true Alaskan vibe

Alyeska a/k/a Girdwood. Where the ski resort is, don't miss the blueberry festival in the fall and the Forest Fair in mid-Summer

Another very cute town about 50 min from Anchorage. Home of the Palmer State Fair mid August-Labor day each year. Have weekly Farmers Markets, great places to eat, cute shops to look in. Palmer also has a popular mountain to climb, "The Butte." for all skill levels. Another popular mountain is, "Pioneer Peak" for the more avid hiker.

City advice

What to pack

Alway bring a coat..

Even if the weather appears to be warm with blue sky bring warm clothing it can change very fast
Getting around

Anchorage everything is close

You can get from one end of Anchorage to the other in about 15-20 minutes. Everything is about 15-20 minutes away.
Don't miss

First Friday is always special.

Art galleries stay open late and they sometimes serve appetizers. The downtown area stays open later, even in winter. Don't miss visiting Girdwood (45 min away). It's a little boho/hippie/ski resort town with good places to eat, beautiful scenery and nice hikes. Be careful about bears. Every summer we HAVE to visit Talkeetna. It's the cutest little town and it would be fun to take the Alaska Railroad there if you can swing it. Flat Top is a great hike in Anchorage for all levels of experience and has great views. Don't miss the Coastal Trail downtown. You can run, walk or bike it.
Don't miss

Westchester Lagoon

On warmer days in the winter Westchester Lagoon has ice skating.
Ways to save

Save Money

Buy the Northern Lights coupon book before you arrive or when you get here. Used to be able to get them at Barnes and Noble. In the summer especially you can get all kinds of discounts like 2 for price of 1 on river trips, Alaska Railroad, dining etc
