It's nearly an hour drive to the east, but a big crowd pleaser. Seasonal, but you can feed and photograph the bears.

We used to take our children here every year before school starts. You can watch them feed the predators and have animal encounters. Weather can be vastly different than near here, but it's not a short drive. It's also on central time zone.

Sorry, but other than Manistique area, it's our closest movie theater! In this area, you will also find a Walmart, Target, Meijer, etc.

At least a 2 hour drive, but very cool for those who have never seen it. They are in the slow process of building a lock right now. You can watch the freighters pass right by you.

Tour inside a freighter that is no longer running. A good distance away, but there is a lot to see and to do in the Sault.

See this on your way to or from downstate to learn a bit about the Native American culture and how it was impacted by the traders and Catholic missionaries.

There are upper and lower falls here--more to see for water when it's raining. If it's dry, the falls here and in Newberry tend to slow down.

City/town information

Good place to go when it's cold in our area, sometimes it's very temperature or much warmer in this nearby town. About 30-40 minute drive south. Nice beaches, a beach walkway, lighthouse, and nearby casino.

City advice

Getting around

Watch out for rapidly changing weather

Dress in layers, bring items for sudden changes on Lake Superior (bug repellent, sunscreen, rain gear, sweatshirt). The weather can change 20-30 degrees with a wind switch up here. For a kayak adventure, Pictured Rocks tour (or similar), check with your agency for weather changes, partial tours, or refunds. If it's snowing, please watch road reports. A blizzard may mean driving when you cannot see. Keep water, a blanket, and extra clothing in your car (plus a shovel). If you snowmobile, please stay on marked trails! We plan to make a snowshoe trail this winter.
