City/town information

Named one of the coolest small towns in the US, this little town has very good restaurants for its size and has a college town vibe. The New River Gorge Bridge is just past town and north on Route 19.

Oak Hill is an old school blue collar town, it's remarkably different from Fayetteville just 5 miles north. We like The Frozen Barn and Tudor's which are both walking distance. It has the dollar stores - two Dollar Generals, a Family Dollar, and a Dollar Tree. It also has inexpensive food like Little Caesar's and Dominoes.

Food scene

If you want to try biscuits and gravy, this small WV chain is the place to get it. Rachel's grandparents were from West Virginia and Kentucky, and Tudor's holds up to theirs. Blackberries on a biscuit is our daughter's favorite. Everything is good. It has an old school feel. There's a location in Fayetteville as well.

This is one of the places that lead us to move here - a great place to get pizza in a small town. Don't get pepperoni here, get something gourmet! Fantastic salads and great beer selection too. There are long waits, so go early, and be warned it's not cheap.

Funky place in Beckley where mostly one guy makes very good tacos. Great for before or after the Exhibition Coal Mine.

Sightseeing

This is well worth a stop, there's a kids museum and a pioneer village right next to it. Take an authentic coal train through an old mine and get a feeling for what it was really like in a coal mine.

Less than 2 mile trail for one of the best payoffs around - a fantastic view of the New River Gorge Bridge from Long Point. It's not a particularly hard trail, so kids 5 and up should be alright if they have a little stamina.

Nice loop to see some rock walls of the gorge. We've been to a lot of national parks and this one lives up to the name. Check out the Burrito Bar afterwards.

If it's rainy or you want something a bit more chill physically but still mentally interesting, go do one of these great escape rooms and tell them Nate and Rachel sent you (we have mini escape rooms in most of our AirBnbs).

City advice

Book before you go

Whitewater rafting

It gets busy in summer, so try to book before you come. The Upper New River is the only one that's good for kids, the Lower New and the Gauley (in October) are very intense and very cool rafting adventures. The big companies are Ace and Adventures on the Gorge, but be sure to check out New and Gauley River Adventures too for an old school experience.
