Neighbourhoods

Hove is a seaside resort and one of the two main parts of the city of Brighton and Hove, along with Brighton in East Sussex, England. Originally a "small but ancient fishing village" surrounded by open farmland, it grew rapidly in the 19th century in response to the development of its eastern neighbour Brighton, and by the Victorian era it was a fully developed town with borough status. Tranquil, upmarket Hove has a swathe of pebble beach and a broad promenade lined with colourful beach huts. The seafront is backed by Western Lawns, a green strip with a skatepark and a small lagoon. Eateries including pizzerias, late-night kebab houses and creative bistros line Church Road, while family-friendly Hove Museum and Art Gallery displays vintage toys. Cricket fans watch county matches at Sussex CCC. A well-known reply by residents of Hove, usually humorous, when asked if they live in Brighton is "Hove, actually" thus maintaining a distinction with their less genteel neighbour. One source has identified the locally resident actor Laurence Olivier (who lived in Brighton) as the origin of the phrase. In the 1990s the Hove borough council used the slogan "Hove, actually" to promote the town.

Once you step outside Cliftonville Court you are on Goldstone Villas. Goldstone Villas is really well connected to get to Brighton and beyond. There are numerous buses going into Brighton including the number 7 bus which goes all the way to Brighton Marina where you can find restaurants and bars. This bus runs 24 x 7 and takes about 15 minutes to get into central Brighton. There’s also a taxi rank here. Immediately opposite the flat, you will see Hove Station - you can get direct trains into Brighton from here (it only takes 5 mins), to London Victoria and London Bridge and you can park your car in the car park there if need be. On Goldstone Villas itself, there is a pub The Station which serves good pizzas (they do 2-4-1 all day Tuesday) and you can eat in or take them away. They often show football and rugby in the pub as well and have a very popular quiz on a Wednesday night. Next to the pub there’s a cafe Billies which serves good breakfasts and lunches (try their hashes if you’re hungry!) and next to that there’s a really good independent wine shop/off license called Country Wines that has a huge range of wines and ales. If you fancy fish and chips, then you need look no further than Wolfies which is always really good and very popular. Next door to Wolfies you can find The Watchmakers Arms, a tiny and very cosy microbrewery and pub serving ales and ciders. They do a free cheeseboard on a Sunday. Slightly further down the road is Small batch Coffee which serves excellent coffee and a selection of snacks. And finally, there’s a wonderful little shop Goldstone Organic selling all manner of fresh fruit and veg and a huge range of vegan and and organic products. If you head round the other direction away from the train station to Denmark Villas you’ll find an Esso petrol station and a Tesco express supermarket which has a cash machine outside.

If you want a breakfast or brunch with a difference then this is the place for you! They serve delicious food (ever had French toast fried crumpets before?!) and cocktails. They do accommodate walk-ins but it is popular so best to book of you can! It’s about a 10 minute walk from the flat and close to the seafront so you can walk off the food afterwards 😊
