Sightseeing

A steady plod from the shack will take you across the river following a footpath and up a fairly long climb to this little Tor. Good footwear would be helpful, a flask of coffee (& even better with cake) makes the climb worth the effort while admiring the stunning view with from the top. This is part of Bodmin moor an area of open access land right on our doorstep where you may not see another soul, even on a summers day. If you don’t fancy a climb you can drive up and do the last bit without too much effort. Just ask for directions.

Pretty awesome castle ruin, the view from the ramparts is stunning… prob why they built it there I recon. There is a lovely 45 min walk through the valley forest to the incredibly beautiful Duchy Nursery. The food there is delicious too. What I would call a grand day out. Lostwithiel town is worth a walk round, it has some nice independent shops and pubs. Go to the English Heritage web page for info and map of the walk.

Highest Tor on Bodmin Moor, and really popular walk. Near to Rough Tor (pronounced ‘Router’ as in the woodworking tool) I’m told. 😄

It’s a big hole in the ground, well the name is the area on Bodmin moor, but there is a cool quarry in the middle. Lovely walk and amazing views across the valley.

Just a ten minute drive from the shack (or two hours walk across the Moor;). This line of three early Bronze Age stone circles is one of the best examples of ceremonial standing stones in the south-west and is associated with many Cornish legends. Parking is close by and there’s a tourist information point in one of the old tine mine engine houses nearby.. also good to hide in if you get caught in a downpour up there. It’s a short walk on to the ‘cheesewring’ from here and the views are stunning.

You can park up and walk around the forest, see the odd deer if your lucky. Great paths for easy walking and decent off road buggies. Not a busy place, you may see the odd walker but super peaceful and on the edge of the moor. Great in winter when you need a bit of protection from the elements … and still want to get some exercise. 🤪

‘Proper ansome’ …. If I was minted I’d move in. Super special hotel, fabulous team who are utterly passionate about home produce to plate. Now they have opened a delicious cafe to delight the senses too! The sourdough bread is lush 😋😋😋
