Outdoor/Exercise

Cool repurpose of a former bridge to nowhere! Walk to Indiana and have great views of the city. There are cute little coffee shops and bars on the other side, and live music at the amphitheater in the summer.

The ONLY fully underground aerial ropes challenge course in the world! Plus walking tours for the less-adventurous. Great for kids of all ages -- definitely schedule this one ahead if you can.

Neighborhoods

Hip, trendy, and yet approachable, the East Market District (affectionately called "Nulu" -- New Louisville) is the coolest neighborhood to eat, drink and play. Lots of restaurants (See Decca, La Bodegita and Mayan Cafe in the guidebook), bars, karaoke, galleries and even a glass blowing studio. Nearby Butchertown and Main Street have cool venues as well.

The Highlands, and Bardstown Road, the main drag that runs through it, is where the grownups hang out. From Jack Fry's (technically on Baxter) all the way to the Bambi Bar (the starting point of the legendary Bambi Walk), the Highlands has something for everyone -- restaurants, bars, galleries, Cherokee Park, Keith's Hardware (the old-fashioned hardware store that has everything you could possibly need in a store no bigger than a Starbucks) and 3 Heine Brothers' Coffee stores. You can find ample parking, but it's best to walk at least part of the stretch to soak up the crunchy/urban/funky/fun vibe.

You may have seen Chef Bruce Ucán's photo in the Louisville airport. This restaurant is a gem -- authentic cuisine, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, great ambiance but not stuffy. Don't miss the lima beans, even if you think you don't like them! Nulu neighborhood.

Casual Dining

Our fave! huge space, lots of outdoor and indoor seating, great craft beer are all well and good, but the MozzaPi pizza is the must-have here. These folks take their craft seriously and mill their own flour. Get there before they sell out of focaccia. If you ask nicely, they'll surprise you with a custom creation, or you could go with the always-amazing Pestolini. On Washington Street, in the Nulu area.

More than a pub, Molly's is an institution where you'll find the expat Irish watching football and hoisting a pint. Their food is surprisingly good -- especially the fish and chips -- and they have a large outdoor dining area where you can watch the Bardstown Rd. revelers from a safe distance!
