Sightseeing

This is a great walk that takes in some of Edinburgh’s most beautiful and historic sites, away from the bustling crowds of the Old Town. Start by taking in the stunning views of the old mills, set against the Water of Leith down in Dean Village.

Then walk along the Water of Leith to Stockbridge, a suburb of Edinburgh with a high street full of independent shops, cafes, bakeries and a great selection of pubs. There’s also a market every Sunday where you can pick up some lovely food and other Scottish produce. If you want to experience an authentic Scottish pub, drop into The Bailie Bar for some drinks and good food!

Just north of Stockbridge are Inverlieth Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Inverleith Park has a lovely big pond where you can see the ducks, swans, possibly some ducklings/signets, as well as a large expanse of greenery and spectacular views of the city, castle, Arthur’s Seat, etc

Just on the outskirts of Edinburgh you can visit the beach! An area that was popular during Queen Victoria’s reign, Portobello is seeing a resurgence in popularity with lots of new cafes, pubs, restaurants opening up, some of which taking in the views of the sea. We recommend brunch at The Beach House on the Esplanade (57 Bath Street, Edinburgh, EH15 1HE). There’s also a bagel place on the high street called Bross Bagels (186 Portobello High Street, Edinburgh, EH15 1EX)

The oldest part of the city (as suggested by the name!), explore the cobbled streets, secret alleys, the castle, try some whisky, eat some haggis, or just sit in one of the cafes and watch the world go by. You can’t leave Edinburgh without visiting these historic streets!

This award winning museum is free and a great way for the family to spend the day. Explore the diversity of the natural world, world cultures, art & design, science and technology and Scottish history. Not to mention admiring the beautiful building in which it’s housed. It’s also great for children of all ages and one of the best places to go on a rainy day (which we sometimes get in Scotland!).

The main peak of the group of hills in Edinburgh, rising to 250.5m (822ft). This beautiful natural landmark provides panoramic views of the city and beyond. It is relatively easy to climb with a distinct path. Climb on a clear day and you will get fantastic views of the city.
