Sightseeing

This is the only place you will see the Bay of Islands from land. It is a 1 min drive from Russell. If you drive up & over Flag Staff Hill you come to Tapeka Point. From there you can turn right into Du Fresne Place & then left up the hill to the end of the road. You will see a small Department of Conservation sign. This will lead you to the walking track & it is a 10-15 min walk to the top. From the top you can see from Nine Pin to Cape Brett. Spectacular! You may even see dolphins from up there.

Yes, kiwi hunting is a thing! Jim's walkway is a great place to start. Obviously, after dark & preferably with a red light so not to disturb the bush life. You will find this walk at Tapeka Point, over flagstaff hill.

Food scene

You can walk onto the car ferry across the harbour to eat at the Opua Cruising Club. It will cost you just $1 for the crossing & you don't need to drive anywhere. They do good bar meals for a reasonable price. They are open 7 days from Dec-Feb & 5-6 days the rest of the year. There closing days are Mon & Tues during winter.
