Just around the corner from the flat, Artisan Roast make decent coffee. One of the first onto the coffee roasting scene in Edinburgh, Artisan Roast is still a good shout for tasty in-house roasted coffee.

Nice little restaurant close-by. They do a really good value 2 course lunch menu for £12 every day. It's a really nice, local, good value place. Booking recommended, especially for lunch.

The Beat opened quite recently, selling coffee and baked goods from her tiny police box. She uses locally roasted Steampunk coffee and it's damn tasty.

Probably my favourite local restaurant. It's a Japanese restaurant with a very relaxed atmosphere. Delicious food, beautiful decor, nice music. Its good value in general and they have a very good set-lunch menu during the week. Book at weekends.

A good stop for ice-cream on a sunny day. They make everything in house and I can confirm that the chocolates, cakes and hot chocolate are all excellent as well.

One of my favourites in Edinburgh. Really delicious tacos and other Mexican "street food". A good range of tequilas and some frozen margaritas. Pretty small and they don't take bookings but it's always worth checking out. There is a good cocktail bar to wait in across the street. It's also a good location on Thistle St.

Dishoom opened quite recently in Edinburgh after opening a few in London. It has an upmarket "London" feel to it but is also very relaxed and easy going. Based on 1930's Bombay cafes, the decor is amazing and the food is really delicious. They do an amazing good value breakfast menu, which I really recommend. Book in advance.

Shopping

A local co-operatively owned and volunteer run green grocers with lots of lovely local and organic vegetables, fruits and a decent grocery section. This place opened in protest of a chain supermarket opening in place of the old delicatessen. Try and buy here if you can. :)

Drinks & Nightlife

A cool bar that has good music and sometimes a tiny dance floor/stage. It can be bit of a hip crowd sometimes and can get really busy. But it's pretty much guaranteed to be a good night when you end up at Palms.
