Food Scene

Bernard Stanley is a favourite of mine. The interior is decorated in a modern yet timeless way and the food is excellent. Pricing is decent, especially for what you get.

Sightseeing

Signal Hill is a national historic site. The first trans-Atlantic wireless signal was sent from here. Cabot Tower is a great place to send a text from! The views here are unparalleled. The hiking in the area is also second to none. On a late spring day, you can see both whales and icebergs.

Cape Spear is the most easterly point in North America. Wake up early and watch the first sunrise on the continent.

Parks & Nature

Pippy Park is not far from my home. The park is deceptively large and has many excellent trails. The Fluvarium is also in this park and is a great place to learn about fish.

Arts & Culture

Located not far from downtown and designed to look like the iconic saltbox houses of so many outports, The Rooms is a great place to spend a day. The view can't be beat! The cafe is also excellent.

The Arts and Culture Centre is an excellent venue for most kinds of music. I can't picture a rock band here but I've attended many Feast of Cohen performances.

Shopping

All along Water Street you'll find dozens of little shop with uniquely Newfoundland wares. The street is very safe and walkable at all hours. Be advised that hours of operation are not consistent from store to store! There are many restaurants too.

This is the largest mall in Newfoundland. The decor is trapped in the late 90s and your mobile phone might not work everywhere but there's a movie theatre and a lot of chain stores.

Essentials

Everything in Newfoundland is easily 25% or higher more expensive than it is back home. Fruit and vegetables have improved over the past three years but I wouldn't chance it in the winter/spring.

Getting Around

Metrobus, the public transportation system is garbage. It is slow and unreliable and the routes are nonsensical. I highly recommend walking or catching a cab if you need to get anywhere and haven't rented a car.
