La Palma is a neighborhood stronghold. Once a week a truck full of corn comes and shoots its contents through the side of this place so they can turn it into the best tortilla chips, tortilla, and huraches around. Stop in and pick up some chips and salsa and taco fixings, too.

Tartine is a local legend for their bread and baked goods. And now they've opened a new over-the-top location in the neighborhood that is a must-try. The lines will be insane - be forewarned. Best to try it during the week at some odd hour.

Crazy chocolate, and I don't even like chocolate that much. People pack in here for their hot chocolate in particular - though it really should go by some other name.

This place can get noisy, but it's worth checking out. These guys change their cocktail list on a regular basis - and serve up some tasty side dishes to boot.

Shopping

Heath started across the water in Sausalito, but opened this location not too long ago. There's a full-on tile factory on-site, as well as a beautiful store full of their ceramics and lots of other beautiful stuff for the home. A great (if somewhat spendy) place for gifts.

Rainbow is the best hippie food in San Francisco. A gigantic, sprawling co-op that is legendary for its aisles and aisles of everything organic and healthy. The cheese counter rules. Don't expect meat or fish - those don't happen here.
