Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

  • Really incredible place to stay. Make sure to try at least one night.

  • The tree house was awesome! What a magical experience in nature in Hawaii! The tree house was just like the pictures, and the frogs outside were great to fall asleep to. I was a bit apprehensive of bugs, but the screens kept the bugs out just fine. The only reason I took a star off of this review was because the bed sheets and pillows smelled strongly of mildew. I understand that Hawaii is a moist climate so this may be unavoidable. If you are someone who has mold or mildew allergies, consider that before booking. Otherwise we had a great stay!

  • No matter how breathtaking you think this listing is, just wait until you see it in person! Pictures can’t capture just how perfect this place is!

  • We had a wonderful time at Kristie's beautiful tree house. The house and the location are quite spectacular! Not only did we enjoy the beautiful house in the wilderness but we also truly enjoyed the little things like the apt books and games she had left for us. My wife really enjoyed showering with the view of the wilderness 🤭. Also, special mention for her hospitality and ease of check-in and out, everything was very smooth. Would definitely recommend this experience! Thanks Kriste! 😃

  • Charming cottage that is in a great location with just a short walk to Manini beach! My wife and I enjoyed our stay. Ron and Karen are very careful to respect your privacy, but are around if you have questions or want a brief chat. They have many very good recommendations for things to do on the island that helped to make our stay special. There are numerous details in this cottage that have history and meaning. Ask Ron about some of the components, they come with a good story!

    Lonzo2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is so cute and charming to stay in. Karen and her husband were amazing hosts. As we got in, Karen showed us around to the beach and gave us insights of the area. Snorkeling at the beach was amazing. Lots of bright-colored fish by the reef. We had a very relaxing stay and enjoyed the decor of the cottage.

    Samantha2020-03-04T00:00:00Z

Everything you need is available in the cottage: coolers, beach towels, boogie boards, and toiletries just in case you forget yours! • Stay here! It’s definitely more of a “glamping” vibe but so amazing! We loved waking up to the sounds of the ocean and wildlife. Very friendly hosts! The snorkel gear was awesome to have when we hiked to Captain Cook!

    Amanda2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • One of the most unique and memorable places I’ve ever stayed. Karen and Ron were very friendly hosts, who made sure we felt right at home.

    Bob2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • There are not enough words to say how wonderful the Bali Cottage and Karen are. The space is AMAZING, the only negative thing I can think of is now all other Airbnb’s or even hotels or even my own home will all fall short of the magic that is the Bali Cottage. Karen is super communicative and welcoming and even walked me down to the beach when I got there, which btw is also amazing and charming. Literally could write a book on how much I loved my stay. Thank you again Karen for sharing your space with the world!

    Leah2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • A magical place! It has so much atmosphere and quirky touches. Kitchen had everything we needed and we spent a lot of our time on the porch. Didn’t miss the lack of air conditioning for our visit in November. We really settled in and enjoyed our 3 days immensely. You’re not just staying at a place, you’re really being hosted.

Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!
  • Ekaterina's place is exactly as advertised...an Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest. It's a great way to learn about being totally off the grid and how to use resources (water, electricity etc). Our favorite part was the sounds from the rainforest! I mean, it was pure magic- hearing the sounds of birds and frogs. What a lovely place to spend a night in such a beautiful part of the Big Island!

    Erin2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing! So glad we stayed here. What a unique opportunity in today’s world to get away from technology and enjoy the beautiful sights/sounds of the jungle. This was a stay we’ll never forget. The space is even better than imagined as are the hosts. Also loved the opportunity to see what it’s like to live off grid. They’ve thought of everything; you’ll love this place!

    Brad2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really cool oasis in the rainforest near Volcanoes National Park. We only stayed for one night, but it was great. We loved being up above the tree line and looking out the giant window from bed into the forest. The shower is fantastic and the sound of the rain on the roof gave everything an extra cozy vibe. Really fun addition to our trip and all the AirBNBs that we stayed in.

    Brian W.2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful experience! The space is unique and the location is a great balance of secluded and near other human beings.

    Kat2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A fun experience. Everyone should do it Atleast one time in your life! Great host!

    Crystal2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • We have a fantastic time staying at the Mokuea Tree House. It is definitely one of the more unique AirBnB experiences that we have had. It’s off the grid and located in a beautiful area on the Big Island. It’s really close to Volcanoes National Park so it made our visit to the park very easy. The Thai food truck down the road (Tuk Tuk) is amazing and definitely a must visit with limited food options nearby. During our stay, I unfortunately left my wedding band behind after checkout. The hosts were FANTASTIC in working with us to get me my ring back, I have nothing but good things to say about the Mokuna Tree House and cant wait to visit again sometime.

    Mary&Jim2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great communication from host, beautiful setting!

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • Amazing secluded cabin tucked away in a beautiful rain forest. Perfect place for a romantic get away. We loved the zip-line! So much fun. While probably not absolutely necessary, having a 4WD helped getting there, as some of the puddles from all the recent rain could have given smaller cars trouble.

  • This is an absolute MUST STAY!!!! It is off the beaten path and secluded in the best way. You are in the middle of the forest with incredible 360 views. We went to sleep with the sounds of nature. If we come back to the big island we will absolutely stay longer.

  • This place is quite the experience! You feel very isolated and organic in this charming, jungle-like setting. The bed is very comfortable, kitchen handy for a small stovetop meal, and the couch is a perfect place to curl up with a book. I was even able to flow through some yoga on the deck! Occasional noice from the neighbors may drift through the window, but it was not an issue for our stay. Would recommend!

  • One of the best Airbnb’s I have stayed in and affordable! The whole experience was very easy!

  • What a treat! Fantastic, off-grid getaway near VNP. Would highly suggest 4-wheel drive, especially with rain around. Gravel roads with deep puddles are a little rough to get through, but very cool once you arrive!

The Phoenix House - an off-grid tiny-house gem - is situated on the Kalapana lava beds near the base of the Kilauea Volcano. Prepare to be blown-away! Besides being the sunniest, driest part of the island, you are surrounded by epic views of the volcano, and black lava fields as far as the eye can see. Yet it’s very close to festive farmers markets, black sandy beaches, and gorgeous coastal drives. Enjoy this elemental vortex unlike any other! ALOHA!
  • Duuuuuude!!! This place is so magical and rad! Loved being on the lava, plus it was raining and perfect for exploring the lava rock, listening to coqui frogs, and then hanging out on the couch. It was easy to find, the hosts were so detailed in their messages we didn’t have a single issue. We took their suggestion, and ate at Tinshack Bakery, and their breakfast was so good! Honestly, it was a magical experience. Grounding yourself in the rain on the lava field... and staying at a well thought out tiny house?! PERFECTIONNNN!! Huge Mahalo to our hosts.

  • If this tiny house calls to you, go! The stillness and strength provided by the lava fields is unique and powerful.

  • My mom and I had a wonderful stay at the Phoenix house. We witnessed the most beautiful rainbow on the lava field from the house! This house has a beautiful and unique character and I 100% recommend. One little thing was that the constructions around the house blocked the view to watch the sunrise but we still enjoyed our stay!

  • If you want to have an epic stay of beautiful views, amazing accommodations, and friendly people... look no farther. Stay here with Jade! Their recommendations were great. Communication was amazing. And it's such a fun idea to live "off the grid".

    Camilla2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • I really enjoyed this place. It’s well away from anything and there’s not really anything to see walking, but it’s the nicest spot I’ve stayed. If you go, I’d drive all the way to Isaac Hale park. The drive is great%,

    Kirsten2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • It was an incredible experience! The design of the house is unique, in both interior and exterior. You can enjoy the lava landscape right from the inside. Besides, it is a good place for star gazing if there is no clouds. We took good pictures at night. Jade was so thoughtful and helpful as we were afraid of the guard dog, she really made us feel at home! Definitely will recommend this house to anyone!

    Yingfei2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to get out to a really quiet area of the Big Island this is a great choice. Very comfortable place with everything you need. The only thing to note is the steep ladder up to the bedroom, which although strong and substantial with strong hand rails, may be a challenge for some older guests. There was some construction work going on but you wouldn’t have known, we barely noticed the two workers. They were very nice and didn’t make much noise at all.

    Joshua And Samantha2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Jade’s place for one night and we really wished we could’ve stayed longer! The entire place is very well decorated and you can tell every item is placed with care. We had everything we needed like drinking water, coffee, tea, hairdryer and many other things that made our stay comfortable. There are also candles and lighters provided. They also provided very thorough directions so we found the place with no problem even in the dark. The view from the home is amazing! We saw rainbows on top of lava and it was just breathtaking. We would definitely stay again and hopefully longer next time! :)

We are a real treehouse at the summit of Kilauea. We are less than five minutes from the main gates to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. During this time of needing to avoid contact with others, the treehouse allows island residents respite from the everyday. #weaccept TA-020-255-1296-01
This is a custom designed treehouse, built by the same crew you see in Treehouse Masters on TV. The Jurassic attitude of the rainforest is preserved on the grounds. We also have a wedding venue nearby you may view in the photos. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park borders the end of the street but can be accessed only through the main gate about two miles away. *** 2019 notes: There is no surface lava at this time. Our air quality is now some of the best anywhere. There are scant emissions from the volcano. Steam comes out of the ground, signs of the hot magma below. The steam is not VOG. There is currently no eruption. There are no signs an eruption is coming, or restarting. Volcanoes are unpredictable but they do give signs before going into action. Those signs typically are increased seismicity over a period of weeks and months, and sometimes years. No signs currently. The changes in the park due to the last eruption cannot be shown other than in imax format- they are that enormous. This is an excellent time to visit. Notes regarding cancellation and changes: please read the policy as published. Airbnb writes the policies and all of us must adhere to them. If you are feeling a need to cancel, you may wish to reconsider and change dates instead or discuss all options with us directly before deleting your reservation. Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series. The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes. The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist. There is no kitchen. There are plates and utensils so you can bring in take out and enjoy your meal either indoors or outdoors in solitude. There is a sink so your plates and utensils may be cleaned. You can make hot beverages. There is a French press and a tea pot. We encourage you to enjoy the nearby restaurants and recognize the treehouse experience is not a cooking experience. This is not by our choice but a change we are forced to make to comply with anti-vacation rental legislation on our island. We are unable to know precisely what restaurants are offering take out but at this writing Kilauea Lodge does so, and the Thai food truck seems still to be operational. We invite you to consult Experience Volcano for up to date notices about meal services. The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. If you are reserving in the near future, it is likely the park itself will be closed. There are however hiking trails outside the park, particularly on Mauna Loa. Please disregard the information in this notice as to places to go, for the duration of the restrictions on island. Please follow all laws as to keeping the effects of the virus to a minimum. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. We are asked from time to time if more than two people can stay in the treehouse. We can especially understand that families would like to bring their children to share this experience. The treehouse is a two person space. Everything is designed to be a honeymoon experience. While it is possible for more than two people to sit together and chat, only two can sleep over. There is no rollaway bed, nor is there room for one or for any other furniture beyond what is there already. Hall of Fame: The treehouse has been featured in Extreme Cribs, on episode 13. The Ellen Show: Kim Douglas's Tropical Vacation Ke Ola Magazine Volcano Tree House story in July - August 2011 edition Trip Advisor: One of the Ten Most Romantic Places to Stay (global selections) PureWow feature Treehouses of the World, Travel Channel European segment, by Treehouse Masters series Buzzfeed blogs and news articles published globally You will have access to the entire property, including the small structure below the treehouse near where you park your car. You may safely lock your luggage inside that room and use the day packs inside during your stay. If you use a CPAP machine, please contact us prior to making a reservation. There is only one treehouse on the property. We live nearby and come by regularly to maintain the treehouse. It is likely we will meet you on arrival. Otherwise, we are available by cell phone, text, email. When we are away, someone else who lives locally will be available to greet you and take care of your needs. The treehouse requires daily attention because it is off grid. This is generally done between 11 am and 4 pm, and most guests are away for that portion of the day. We do ask that if you are staying all day at the treehouse, that you communicate with us to let us know when one of us can come up and take care of the place. The neighborhood is mostly old growth rainforest with a few houses here and there. When you drive up, you will notice there are neighbors across the street and next door. You will forget about them once you walk through the moongate and enter the world of the treehouse. Sometimes of a late afternoon and evening you may hear a local hula halau practicing. We hope you find the sounds of laughter and Hawaiian language and music adds to the ambience. A rental car is a necessity. While there is public transportation, it is a long slow trip up the mountain. Uber and Lyft are available here, but the distances are such that renting a car tends to be more efficient. The park is a couple of miles down the road, and so large you will want to drive and not attempt to walk. Volcano Village is about a mile up the road. You might like to stroll up and back. If walking into the village for dinner, a flashlight for your return is an absolute must. We provide - please take it with you! If you are planning a first trip to our island, we suggest that you stay 2 or 3 nights at the treehouse. Please contact us for for discussion before you reserve if you wish. The island is truly big, and most people would rather spend the night on the west side of the island rather than return to Volcano after a day of play over there. Although we show rates for long term stays, we would like to discuss plans with you before completion of a stay of 5 days or longer. When you decide you want to stay at the treehouse, you are coming to a place unlike any other. There are other treehouses, but each is unique. This treehouse is off grid. This means it requires hands on service, every day. For most people, this is a seamless thing that happens while they are off adventuring. Every once in awhile, people come and do not want to leave, at all. We understand, but we do want to let you know that we must enter the treehouse on a daily basis to service the composting toilet. The hot tub also requires attention. The treehouse is in the forest. It is inside the trees, and this means easy critter access. To keep them outside, we carry your rubbish away and make sure your food is stored adequately. It is not a good idea to leave unwashed dishes for these same reasons. This is the tropics. There are insects. They are not as prolific here as at lower elevations, but they do exist, and will visit you especially at dusk with lights on. Spiders are residents of the forest. They are food for the birds. If you love the birds, please tolerate their food supply. We empty the house of spiders daily but we do not poison. The spiders come back at will. They are small, and stay in the corners. They leave evidence of their visit in the form of webs. We do our best to be inhospitable to them, but they persist. When there is weather, like hard rains and winds, from your perch in the trees you will experience the sound and feel in ways you may have not before. The house is tight - the weather does not enter if the doors and windows are closed. But the sounds can be formidable. You will feel close to nature.
The neighborhood is part undeveloped rainforest and part lots with houses. There are no tract homes - every house is individually designed and built. There are no street lights so at night it is very dark. The forest tends to obscure moonlight. There is a hula halau that practices nearby some afternoons, and you can hear their Hawaiian music and chants late in the day.
  • What can I say? An incredible stay!! A must visit Airbnb. I would fly to the Big Island again just to stay on this property. The communication was excellent. We had some pretty rainy weather during our stay so our check in time changed, but the hosts were quick to respond to us and adapt to our check in needs. They met us at the property and showed us around the treehouse. The Treehouse itself is AMAZING. The entrance is grand, the hot tub outside is incredible, shower outside is such a neat touch, the compostable toilet works great. Everything about the treehouse was impeccable. There is a fireplace to keep warm on cooler/rainy days/nights. There is also WIFI available, although the data in the area is pretty good so we did not utilize the WIFI. A 10/10 stay. Highly recommend. Cannot say enough good things! A dream come true for those looking for a unique stay!

  • Wow! I’ve been visiting this island for 20 years and this was such a unique experience even after I thought I had done it all! Super comfy bed, the hot tub was so fun and luxurious and the outdoor shower felt amazing in the cool air. Location is so ideal for visiting the Volcano National Park. We loved it!

  • If you’re staying in Volcano, there is no other place. A beautiful treehouse with attention to every detail.

  • Had a great stay here, wife loved it. Close to Volcano and the National Park. Exactly as in the pictures and a very unique place to stay. Plenty of power for everything we needed, good heater, off the grid no problem at all. Loved it and would return.

  • Such a cool experience, already planning the next stay in the treehouse.

    Ben2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • A highly romantic hideaway for a couple. This is a very special place hard to find elsewhere. It is exactly as described in the add. Important is to read these instructions to understand the limitations of a tree house and the fact that local taxes are charged separately. Smooth communication, and daily service. Very close the the Volcano National Park so a great place to enjoy the park.

    Felix2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Cool space if you want to get off the map for a couple days. Highly recommend using the soaking tub and outside shower. It’s awesome!

Our Retreat is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike the nearby beaches, forests, and volcanoes and to simply enjoy life. Our place is a peaceful spot completely off the grid in nature. It is 8 miles to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You’ll love our place because of the location, the ambiance, and the outdoor space. Our goal was to bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
This beautiful peaceful gem is located 8 miles to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The house is secluded off the road for privacy and to be as close to nature as possible. The house is elevated 15 feet but the bed elevates you 20 feet off the ground. It is quite a unique experience. Arrival You first arrive at a gravel driveway and a wood chipped winding path. You pass beside and under the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops and orchids as well as the tree canopy. The trail to our house is about 120 feet deep in seclusion. There are little pockets of ferns and flowers along the trail as well as a Ganesh and a Buddha keeping a peaceful eye on our little sanctuary. Downstairs Lanai You will find yourself on the lower deck/lanai. This lanai is surrounded by hanging plants and places to relax in your own private Zen. There is an 8-foot teak Balinese Bale' daybed to lounge in and it can be a place to relax that is also functional. During our travels to Bali, Indonesia one of our favorite memories is laying in a daybed surrounded by plants and nature, complete Zen and that is what we have re-created in Hawaii. This daybed is a beautiful space to be next to nature and relax, read a book, take a nap and enjoy life. Remember it is vacation time! Looking across from the daybed is a handmade teak bistro set to sip some coffee or tea, read a book or play a game. There are two half tables where you can make a cup of coffee or tea or pick up a bottled water. Downstairs bathroom The center walkway has two barn doors with separate bathroom and shower areas. The shower is a large space with a ten-foot ceiling and large shower "rainwater" nozzle that mimics the soft falling of rain. The shower is powered by solar and on-demand propane for heat. There is a bench to sit and relax and soak in the moment. With the forest in mind, the shower room has bamboo walls and hanging plants to create unique ambiance. The mist from the shower help feed the plants/orchids. There is cruelty-free and nature-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. Toiletries in case you forgot any are provided in the bathroom. Across from the shower is the bathroom with woven bamboo walls and a handmade Koa wood wash basin, flushing toilet, mirror, vanity and toiletries for the shower and bathroom are provided in the baskets. In the center walkway, there is another handmade Koa wood wash basin. Upstairs Lanai: You are now winding up the stairs and you arrive to the upstairs Lanai. Another place to breathe and relax. As you explore upstairs, the covered upper deck/lanai catches the rainwater to turn into reusable shower and toilet water. The covered lanai gives you the chance to sit out in the rain forest and watch the rainforest replenish itself. The animals and trees become animated at different times of the day. At night you can stargaze. The furniture is inviting you to “sit and take a load off." There you can breathe in the forest and enjoy the scenery and views of the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops. Towering above you, 40-60 feet in height, are Ohia, Koa, Guava and Eucalyptus trees which comprise the tree canopy. There are wicker chairs with overstuffed cushions and a cozy footrest for two. There are side tables for drinks and snacks and a small table you can play cards on. At night the Coqui Frogs will serenade you with their mating songs from the trees. Bedroom: As you pass through the keyless entry window door you will find another gem. There is an airy feel due to 12 foot ceilings and cathedral style windows in the trusses along with three 4x8 foot windows. Then you will see our little gem of a bed: we are very proud of our own designed “perch platform bed” that nestles you 4 feet in the air. You will feel like you are perched in a tree. The comfy mattress makes for a perfect and tranquil night sleep. The view from the bed is a panoramic view from the 8x4 foot front bay window and on clear nights you can gaze at the stars through the cathedral style windows in front and behind the bed. Now it is your choice to watch stars, birds or the clouds from the bed. There is a built in closet within and beneath the bed where you can put your suitcases or hang your clothes. This bed has it all and we made it to simplify and organize your luggage. No messes, all hidden and contained in the semi walk in closet. On the sides of the bed are two sets of stairs and each side has their own charging USB station for your phone or tablet. Birds, amphibians and animals: Animals you may see in the gardens or in the treehouse: Coqui Frogs, a variety of lizards, Geckos, Jackson’s Chameleons, Endangered Pueo owls have been spotted intermittently at our property. The endemic black-billed ‘apapane, salmon-billed i’iwi, the white and brown ‘elepaio, and the yellow-green colored ‘amakihi are some of the forest birds of Hawaii that can be found. Additionally, feral pigs occasionally scamper about the forest floor but do not like human interaction. Pests: Mosquitoes. This is the rainforest so mosquitoes are common. We provide DEET and non-DEET bug sprays or you can bring your own. We do ask that you do not spray yourself while on our furniture or linens. It stains and is almost impossible to get out of linens. Mosquitoes: we offer bug spray Here is a list of the amenities that are available to you: • Bale’ Daybed • Bistro set and Rattan seating • Platform bed and closet • Outdoor shower  • Flushing toilet with septic • Cruelty-Free Soap and Enviro-Friendly/Shampoo/Conditioner • Towels • Ceiling fan and light • Clean sheets • Bathroom and center sinks • Ice cooler for food and drinks • Mugs and cups for drinks • Maps and Hawaii destination books to use • Cards • Board Games • Books • Outlets (3-prong and USB styles) • Flashlights • Off-road parking • solar fairy lights • solar lights • local snack and water bottles • Bug spray and Citronella candles BEFORE YOU BOOK We wanted to be precise on any hindrances that you may experience we call it uniqueness but make sure you know what to expect before booking our space. We love our house and we are sure you will as well for a Zen –like peaceful experience. The house is off-grid and self sufficient but tradeoffs come with being unique and off-grid. 1. The Rainforest. The rain forest name says it all. How unique is it to be in the United States and in a Rain Forest close to a National Park? The green you will be surrounded by is powered and fed by the rain. It rains 30% of all days. The forest rejuvenates and replenishes with every rain. Our little house lives off the rain catchment therefore we enjoy the rain in all aspects: It gives life; it gives us water. You can experience anything from sun, to mist to torrential downpour. The volcano helps with this ecological system and therefore it is a unique experience to be had but rainforests are not for everyone. 2. The Treehouse, it is 15 feet off the ground. If afraid of heights this is a mild view but might not be right for you. There are only 2 levels of sturdy stairs to climb. No ladder like other places but if any problems walking back 200 feet to our structure or climbing 2 flights of stairs, you may want to reassess staying here. You will need to carry your luggage back and up the stairs. We have a wagon for use but you will still need to haul the luggage or items you are bringing to the house. 3. The Rain. The rainwater catchment system provides water for the water faucets, shower and toilet. It is filtered but not sanitized and in the jungle it is unwise and unsafe to drink the water. We provide water for you to enjoy during your stay. If you consume large amounts of water you might want to bring some with you as well. 4. The Noise. The rain catchment water pumps do make a small amount of noise but only when in use for showers, sinks, and flushing the toilet. The rain falling off the tree canopy does make noises when falling from 40-60 feet and hitting the structure and covered canopy. Additionally, there is a water trap for the structure on the back wall that does make a soft noise while gathering the water when the rain is falling moderately hard. At night, the Coqui’s chirping/singing can be loud. We love the serenade as it drifts us off to sleep but some are bothered by the frogs chirping. During the day and at dusk the native beautiful songbirds can be loud while gathering food and communicating with each other. There are also neighborhood dogs that can be heard barking intermittently in the distance. The last potential "noisy" concern may be the stillness of a forest or the absence of noise which can bother some people that are not use to “unplugging” from technology. 5. Solar Power. The solar panels are located on the roof and batteries are located downstairs. When the skies are clear and sunny the panels gather sunlight and convert into energy but when overcast or raining the solar panels gather small amounts of energy. We have ample amounts but still limited energy. You can run your devices but must be aware of energy conservation because there is only so much stored per day and it is all dependent on the weather conditions and what you are consuming. No hairdryers or irons are allowed for this reason: too much energy consumption. We have battery operated and solar lights throughout the structure as well. Phones and tablets can be charged at anytime with USB ports but laptops should be charged sparingly. 6. The Bugs. Mainly mosquitoes. They are not big but they are present in the rain forest. Hawaii does have mosquito borne illnesses, but mostly on the other side of the island in the Captain Cook area. Being in a rain forest you do need mosquito awareness. Wear mosquito repellant that we supply to you. If you are visiting Hawaii I would suggest buying your own bug spray and sunblock, you will need it throughout the island. With all these considerations…we absolutely love our house and find it to be tranquil while energizing us physically and mentally for the day. We love living in nature but being close to all things. 7. This treehouse has no cooking facilities. We encourage our guests to taste the different flavors that the island has to offer. • 8 miles (13 minutes) to Hawai’i Volcano National Park • 12.2 miles (18 minutes) to Keaau • 20.4 miles (33 minutes) to Hilo • 21.8 miles (35 minutes) to Rainbow Falls • 23.5 miles (35 minutes) to Pahoa • 34.8 miles (51 minutes) to the Lava Viewing area at Kalapana (no direct route) • 36 miles (58 minutes) to Akaka Falls • 45.3 miles (54 minutes) to Naalehu/South Point
The treehouse is on a quiet gravel road a little over a mile from the highway. The nearest neighbors are a few acres away in all directions. It is remote but close to all things. We have great neighbors but they love their privacy as we love ours. Orchid Isle Estates is surrounded by tree canopies and a myriad of orchids. There are some great restaurants in the town of Volcano as well as in Hilo, Kea'au and Pahoa. Please see our guide at the house for more details There is a little local store, Hirano's, close by for small items and a quick bite. There are two stores in Volcano, a big grocery store in Kea'au and more in Hilo. Farmers Markets are amazing here and no matter what the day you can probably find one open. I have a guide to farmers markets in my book in the treehouse. Our guide to the island sights is our personal opinion to find off the wall touristy and untouristy areas of interest. Beaches, farmers markets, waterfalls, hikes and lava tubes are all contained in the book at the treehouse. I also have printed out guides for you to take as well.
  • Amazing treehouse tucked in the rainforest and surrounded by nothing but nature itself. It’s situated in a pretty rainy area so be prepared for that but I very much so enjoyed the raindrops hitting the roof accompanied by the calls from coqui frogs to put me to bed. Really awesome place if you just want to have a quick retreat and have a little taste of what Hawai’i feels like with your loved ones. Just note that the shower is only cold water but it makes sense for the setting and the location and I didn’t mind it at all. Instructions to get to the spot are also very clear! Would definitely come back again!

  • I surprised my boyfriend for his 50th. We both fell in love with the treehouse. We felt like we were in an enchanted forest. The bed was super comfy and having coffee was a plus. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place :)

    Tammy2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • What an experience. Loved the little details about this place- the hot shower and variety of soaps was a treat. Tea at night and coffee in the morning made it very comfortable. I would recommend this to the adventurous types who are comfortable with the outdoors!

    Katie2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place was the highlight of my trip. Very cute and full of nature. I wish there was more light in the bottom or at least wifi coz we had no network at all.

    Kanika2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing tree house experience. Loved listening to the rain all night. Short drive to Volcanoes National Park. We brought drinking water but it was not needed as Britt and Michael had already provided bottled water, as well as many other amenities to enjoy this beautiful tree house in the jungle.

    Anna2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • This treehouse is the perfect getaway and such a cool place! Definitely the place to stay if you’re looking for a place that’s quiet, serene, and unique (being tucked away in the rainforest...very neat!). Brittany and Michael were great hosts that responded quickly and provided lots of helpful information prior to checking in. They have a book with recommendations and places to see or try that we found to be very helpful as we navigated the Big Island. We spent a lot of time out and about during the day and coming back here in the evening was so relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommend this place to anyone spending time on the island!

    Chelsea2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • This was such an incredible experience. Brit and Michael's place was honestly such an amazing experience! It's even more beautiful than the pictures. It truly exceeded our expectations. Wish we had booked more days here as we celebrated our honeymoon. It was so magical and so peaceful! As soon as we arrived, we noticed how clean it was and the bed was so comfortable! The road is really tight and had difficulty reversing. Other than that. Everything else was exceptional! HANDS DOWN THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN VOLCANO AREA!

    Oscar2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Was a way cooler experience than we anticipated. Relaxing and off the grid. Everything was so clean and welcoming. Bed was super comfortable and the rain at night was peaceful and calming. The seating areas both upstairs and downstairs were so wonderful to just sit and visit. Would love to come stay again when we are in the area!!

Wake up at the feet of Pele with an amazing sunrise and ocean view from your bed! Charming one bedroom off grid, eco-cabin in sunny Kalapana. Sweeping ocean views and lava viewing (when flowing) from front yard. Explore any of the 7 newly created black sand beaches. Feel the energy and witness creation first hand. This is once in a life time bucket list material! Come check it off yours!
Come visit and stay in the most unique, awe inspiring vacation rental you'll find! This is the #1 most visited rental in sunny Kalapana for a reason. You'll be able to access the newly created black sand beaches and hiking trails. Hike or drive from McKenzie park over the freshly hardened fissar 8 lava flow to Pohoiki. Pohoiki was transformed during this last flow and now boasts a beautiful crescent black sand beach, 2 healing ponds that are thermally heated and several fun tide pools. The cabin is inside of Kalapana gardens subdivision built on the hardened 1991 lava flow. Front row viewing of lava (when flowing) and closer, VIP access to lava hiking and exploring. Free parking on site at cabin so bypass all the tourist parking hassles! Closest rental cabin to lava and only one on the main county maintained road in Kalapana Gardens. All cars can park easily on my property. Ocean views on two sides of cabin and volcano view on the third! Seperate detached bedroom with lanai, queen size bed with ocean and lava glow views. Spectacular star gazing in the clear night skies. Solar powered cabin with full refrigerator and freezer, high speed wireless internet, propane dual burner cook top, french press for coffee, pots, pans and utensils. Cabin has hard wood floors and built in sky lights to allow lots of natural light in during the day. Compost toilet which we use to make soil to replant palm trees and native Hawaiian species on the scorched lava earth. Cabin also has an open air propane heated hot shower! Perfect for couples or small families. Enjoy the best sunrises and sunsets in the world all from the raised viewing lanai/yoga deck out back. The property is covered in papaya trees, banana trees & pineapples. It also has a cherry tree, mango, avacado, dragon fruit, lime, coconut and several variations of palms. There's also numerous Ti trees which in Hawaiian culture are used to line the borders of your property to ward off evil spirits. Cook pine trees, bamboo, autograph tree, beautiful and bright coleus bush's, orchids, plumeria and bougainvillea. There's also hundreds of different small succulents that line the paths in the back of the property. Look closely to find these exotic gems that thrive in the lava and abundance of sun that Kalapana is blessed with. Make sure to stay on the paths so you don't crush any of these lovely small plants. I love the blank canvas the land provides and I'm excited to watch my garden and beautiful plants grow! You'll be surrounded by the energy of an active volcano and the deep blues of the Pacific ocean this is truly a once in a life time opportunity! Seize it!
Kalapana gardens is a great mix of eccentric locals, homesteaders, transplants and vacation rentals. The pace is slow and the aloha is abundant. It's also one of the driest places on the east side of Hawaii. Other things to see and do around the area are New Kaimu black sand beach, Kahena black sand beach, the Puna coastal trail to Ha'ena (shipmans beach), hike or drive from McKenzie park to pohoiki surf spot with its newly formed crescent black sand beach and thermal heated healing ponds, Wednesday night market at Uncle Roberts, Sunday is the Makuu farmers market. You can get food and supplies in the hippie outlaw town of Pahoa! I also do tours of the hidden gems of Puna that only locals know and other big tour companies don't do!! Just ask. Staying here provides locals only access to the gardens and free on-site, front row parking to one of nature's coolest displays! Grab a beer, kick back and enjoy this amazing feat of nature.
  • We loved this tiny house! The view was amazing and location was pretty awesome. Sleeping at night was so peaceful and we would definitely come back to stay again!

    Logan2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful stay in this little home in the middle of the lava field. We had a peaceful vacation here, would recommend!

    Léa2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Super close to the black sand beach if your wanting to go there. Seans place is that little getaway your looking for, I was surprised to find that the sleeping area is in its only little space... the shower is also pretty cool. Its great for off grid living :)

    Amanda2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Sean and Zorro’s place for one night when we were visiting Big Island. We thought it was a cool place in a super interesting location, and we loved the stargazing, views of the lava fields, and all the interesting off grid features of the house. We are used to camping, backpacking, and other other off grid ways of living and were not bothered by the composting toilet, water jugs, etc. The place was tidy and had some cute features like a book of letters written to Pele re: Pele’s curse. It was a side of the island we wouldn’t have seen or stayed in otherwise, and on the way out we did an amazing drive down to Kalapana and up 137 along the coast which we would highly recommend. We would recommend Sean & Zorro’s place to anyone who likes stargazing, interesting places to stay, and/or off grid living. We would definitely stay here again!

    Katie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the great variety of plants around the house. The stars are amazing

    Shauna2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I had such a good time staying here! It’s really cute inside and outside. The shower, toilet, kitchen all worked well. We slept well too! Enjoy the stars, enjoy the proximity to the beach. Our advice is to check in before sunset since it is an off-the-grid spot so it’s easier to find in the light!

    Yanzi2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, loved being off grid and remote. For some reason, we thought Chain of Craters road would connect all the way through to the park but that was through our own fault! It did leave it a little further to access the park though. Both black sand beaches in the area are fantastic, highly recommended!

    Josh2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely an adventurous place to stay. The moonlight and stars were gorgeous and calming. The breeze put us right to sleep.

Aloha Nature Lovers! Located between Waipio Valley and Volcano National Park. Great hiking! Convenient and very private swimming holes to enjoy at your door. One can spend days chasing the many private waterfalls and exploring our property. Swimming the pristine waters that fill natural pool below our many private waterfalls. Enjoy each breath of pure sweet air. The little cabin has a great ocean view to watch the ships go sailing by & clouds parade down the coast. Nights are wonderful just sitting around the campfire, star gazing and telling stories. Tent camping for the kids is safe and easy. Located 20 miles north of Hilo. Just 1 mile from the highway. Very serene with only the sounds of the flowing waterfall, breezes through the trees, and tropical birds. My three horses (Nohea , Mahina and Shy Girl) will be eagerly awaiting to greet you. Aloha and Happy Trails! ***** I highly recommend ***** TURO CAR ,SUV and 4x4 rentals NOTE : Flooding may and does occur in North Hilo and on the Big Island. Please use extreme caution when near, swimming in or crossing any waterway. 4x4 or jeep is recommended for exploring back road areas on the island and to get to my place. 4x4 is required to access Waipio Valley, Green Sands Beach, and Mauna Kea. Book a cheap car then ask for a jeep up-grade when you arrive for good deals on jeeps from Budget. Aloha and be Safe! **** I highly recommend **** TURO Car , SUV and 4x4 rentals
Awesome ocean views. Papaaloa Country Store , Bar and Restaurant is just down the road . Great pizza and local style fresh food. Nightly live music almost 6 nights a week .
  • A peaceful, beautiful place! Amazing!

  • We had such a wonderful time here even though it was a short stay. Keith and his daughter Ashley we’re both great hosts nice to talk to and helpful with everything. The view is amazing, the sound of the waterfall was soothing and it just felt great to be surrounded by nature and the horses and peacocks. We also explored the river with all its waterfalls. It’s so beautiful and just a short walk from the tent. Everything is a bit rustic, so you need to be comfortable with the outdoors. The outdoor shower was our favorite of the 6 we experienced on this trip. Surrounded by tropical plants, hot water and a great view. We look forward to coming back and staying for longer next time.

  • This is a gorgeous location, the accommodations are simple & clean & we had everything we needed. It is the perfect place to enjoy fresh air and the countryside in HI. The horses, waterfalls, peacocks and chickens were beautiful. We loved it!

    Catherine2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Keith and his daughter, Ashley were very kind during our stay. The tour of their grounds/property was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay here amongst the jungle, horses and waterfalls + some chickens. You definately need 4x4 to get to the property. We had a Hyundai Elantra and there was no way we could have gotten in without causing damage to the car. Thankfully, Ashley picked us up at the local restaurant due to a flash flood at the streams surrounding their property. We truely appreciated the hospitality and kindness. Ashley was calm and relaxed which put us at ease when it came to the flash flood and getting into the property.

    Justyna2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Off-grid and off the beaten path. If these are things you like, you will love this place. Stars galore, frogs and the crash of a waterfall singing you to sleep every night, you really get to be a part of nature in Hawai'i . We had zero issues with bugs and the chickens were friendly neighbors!

    Alana2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Spotlessly clean we enjoyed our 2 night stay. Some of the touches are a little worn, but the overall feel is complete relaxation and fantastic value. We ate dinner in both evenings there enjoying the view from the recliners to the sea.

    David2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • This bungalow is off-the-grid so expect to unplug and unwind! However, the house is equipped with a generator which enables you to charge small electronics and use a small amount of wifi per day. Follow the very detailed directions on how to get there; definitely recommend 4wd vehicle as there are river crossings and the hills are steep. Located just north of Hilo, the house is a one-room bungalow that is sectioned off into living and sleeping space. It was perfect for the two of us; there is a ‘balcony’ area where one can relax and watch the sunrise over the farm; there is space with a dining table and kitchen space. The kitchen has a refrigerator and a gas stove plate. The sleeping area has a bed with mosquito net to keep bugs out. We could even see the waterfall from the ‘bedroom!’ The bathroom is around the outside of the bungalow (open to air as pictured) and provides a lovely view into the surrounding forest! Numerous animals on the farm included several friendly horses; some rambunctious and noisy chickens; a flock of peafowl; little coqui frogs; and the ubiquitous island geckos! There are many fruit trees on the property and the fruit was amazing! We followed Ashley’s advice and hiked down to the waterfalls on the property— it was really beautiful, and we would definitely stay here again when visiting the Big Island!

    Jessica Stephanie2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Keith & Ashley’s place is truly a nature lovers paradise. I had no trouble finding it, and the roads were totally fine with my Jeep rental (as the hosts say: 4WD is highly recommended!). I spent a lot of time around the property exploring, and getting into the pools/waterfalls nearby. The water was brisk, but that’s to be expected this time of year, and I prefer cold water swimming anyway. The horses are friendly, and the chickens were hungry for crumbs! It was very clean, and the bed was comfy. I was a woman traveling alone, and it was perfect from beginning to end. Aloha!

  • Such a wonderful guest experience at Jerry and Alice's Kona Magic Sands place...we did not want our stay to end! Everything you need for a wonderful vacation is included - from a comfortable bed, all kitchen utensils and appliances, very nice linens and towels and anything you would need for a day at the beach. It is hard to describe the views and sounds of the ocean...there were days we just opened the lanai and spent most of the day enjoying the scenery (and serenity). And after a day of touring, it was so nice to come back and just enjoy the ocean, pool and making dinner in their well-equipped kitchen. We would actually look forward to returning each afternoon/evening to enjoy their place and the atmosphere. Jerry and Alice are such sincere and caring hosts... they truly want guests to enjoy their experience. There were tropical fresh flowers waiting for us as well as bananas from their own tree! We were sad when our stay ended and hope to be guests again! A wonderful, fabulous experience! Mahalo Jerry and Alice for sharing your paradise with us!

    Shannon2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely amazing views and place. We saw whales, dolphins, fish, and turtles all from our condo! Jerry and Alice were some of the nicest people Ive ever met, very accomodating and definitely went above and beyond. We are definitely hoping to come back and stay here again.

  • It was very relaxing to hear the constant splashing of the waves, which sent us to sleep immediately! The Magic Sands restaurant was excellent, convenient and fun. Great to have an allocated parking space.

  • Jerry & Alice are the kind of hosts that you remember for years, their kindness and warm communication, they feel like friends rather than hosts. We will never forget the roar of the waves, the breath taking sunsets and the whales and dolphins daily transiting out front. 🐳🌊 🌅

    Darrell2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Jerry and Alice's condo. The views were magnificent - a perfect place to take in an ocean sunset. Was nice to be able to lie in bed and hear the sound of the waves. The location was great too, right next to a nice beach and an easy drive to any other Kona destination. Jerry and Alice were great hosts and provided all the info we needed for our trip along with plenty of suggestions for places to eat and things to do. We would love to stay at their place again.

Aloha and Mahalo for visiting my listing. "Pl.note that I don't have included the Transient /Ge tax ( 14.50%) in my price since it would reflect in the fee you pay to airbnb. I will collect it upon arrival." This place is nesteld on the slope of Hualalei mountain inmidst of coffee farms, from this cooler elevation (1200ft.) it is only 15 min./7 miles to Kailua -Kona, the nearest Beaches and Supermarket.
This downstair apartment is fully private with private entrance, bedroom has a queen bed, bathroom with bathtub/shower, walk-in closet. Lanai ( Porch) with view. Kitchenette has a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, electric skillet and electric pot, toaster, coffee maker, electric water kettle, rice cocker and a blender. Linen, towels and beach towels are provided. Free wireless internet, use of BBQ, car port. At 1200 elevation it is nice to come home from a day of activities at the beach to a cooler climate and quiet neighborhood to relax and watch the sunset from the lanai with view.
It is located in the midst of the famous Kona Coffee region, just 1 min. north from old charming Holualoa town with many Art Gallerys, a grocerie store, post office, coffee shop, and a wonderful outdoor restaurante (slow food). In just 12 min. ( or 7miles) you are in Kailua Kona town or at the nearest beaches.
  • The apartment is perfect! It is very well equipped, clean and offers a very nice view to watch sunsets. We enjoyed the stay very much and can just recommend it!

    Melina2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • A quiet space a little away from Holualoa Town, a large site with lots of fruit trees and trees. There is a two-story house in that space. The second floor is the host house and the first floor is the guest house. There are many similar homes around the property, in a quiet, relaxed and lovely area away from the hustle and bustle. Located at the foot of Mount Faralai and away from the sea, it is not too hot and cool. It's a bit cool in the morning and evening, so it's a good idea to have long sleeves. Rooms are clean and well cleaned. Cooking utensils are available, and there are rice cookers, microwave ovens, ovens, electric pots, hot plates, toasters, coffee makers, etc., so you can cook yourself without any problems. Since there is also a coffee mill, you can grind the purchased Kona coffee beans and drink it immediately. There is also a cartridge type water purifier, so there is no need to buy water. In addition, there are a lot of beach gear, and beach chairs, umbrellas, cooler boxes, snorkels, cool bottles, etc. were handy. The view from Lanai is a lot of trees underneath, the town of Kailua-Kona and the vast sea far away. Every day I spent watching beautiful sunsets. The lanai is large, so you can eat at the table or relax on the sofa. Rent-a-car is essential, but it is about 15 to 20 minutes drive to Kailua Kona, Keauhou shopping center and beach. Every day I went to KTA, Safeway, Target, Walmart and Kahaluu Beach. Check-in and check-out were easy, and the host lived on the second floor, so there was no need to receive or hand over the keys, just putting the keys on the table. The host woman is very kind and will answer me politely if I have anything, and I'm on the second floor so I can go to listen immediately. It keeps your private well, so you will rarely meet and help you only when you need it. I think it is the best location to spend your time on the Big Island slowly and comfortably, but I think it is a good distance for those who are actively moving to Hilo, Volcano, Mauna Kea, North Kona and many beaches, I went many times during my stay. Especially in the middle of the Kona coffee cultivation area, you can easily go around the coffee plantation everywhere. I stayed for about 3 weeks, but anyway, I found the location, environment, room and host to be satisfactory.

  • Karoline and her dog Hano are lovely hosts and her place was just perfect for our stay on the big island! Karoline has a beautiful house and guest apartment. Everything was sparkling clean and decorated in a cozy hawaiian style. We cooked a lot and were genuinely surprised by how good the kitchen devices (mixer, pans etc.) are! The whole apartment is very well thought through and Karoline goes above and beyond to ensure that her guests enjoy their stay. She even provided us with fresh fruits from her own garden! She also makes her own soapes and pays special attention to the environment and holding a sustainable houshold. Hano is the cutest, a very friendly, goofy and even a little shy doggo that one cannot help but love. We also loved the view from the apartment. One can see the ocean and watch the most amazing sunsets whilest sipping on a cold Big Wave or Longboard. So, if you get the chance stay here and enjoy this beautiful island from the very best airbnb.

  • Karoline’s place was warm and cozy as described. It has a neat view of the ocean, and the property itself is surrounded by lush trees. The house was stocked with amazing coffee beans, which my husband really enjoyed having. Karoline’s dog, Hano, was a cool hang out in the mornings. The place is conveniently located to Kona and other beaches (about 15-20mins drive). Highly recommend it.

  • Karolines house is very charming and well kept in every detail, and with a beautiful view over the garden and to the ocean. Peaceful area and close to a nice little village.

The Ohana House - an off-grid tiny-house gem - is situated on the Kalapana lava beds near the base of the Kilauea Volcano. ALOHA!
  • If you are staying on the East side of the Big Island, the lava flows of Kalapana should not be missed. And if adjectives “chill” and “tranquil” appeal to you, then a stay at the unique Ohana House should be at the top of your list!

  • Loved our time here. It was so quiet and somewhat remote. We saw only a handful of people the whole time we were there (3 nights). No noise after sunset in the neighbourhood. Everyone was quiet and Jade, Emily and their people were super friendly. The home had everything we could need and more. Easy to cook in and a huge fridge to keep perishables. Washroom sink was interesting as was kitchen sink because we weren’t used to no piping and the water just runs directly to the ground. I would recommend only using all natural cleansing products as a result. The hammock was a lovely and appreciated touch even though it rained / got wet and was super windy throughout our stay. Thank you Jade and Emily for a wonderful experience! We were so relaxed!!

  • We loved staying at the Ohana House. The space and the area was beautiful. It was nice being farther out as it was easy to enjoy the peace and quiet. We saw rainbows almost every morning and stars every night. Jade was easy to communicate with and provided sufficient instructions to arrive at the location. Highly recommend staying here!

  • My husband and I live on the north side of the Big Island and love to take mini get always down to Kalapana. The house was so cute and perfect, we loved the lanai and the view. We would definitely rent here again. We also loved the layout so much we are inspired to build an Ohana in a similar fashion! Mahalo nui loa!

  • The house is very spacious and comfortable. Very well equipped. The host is very gracious and extremely welcoming. We had everything we needed and more than expected.

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

    Caroline2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

    Timothy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • I had a wonderful time with my family! There were playground equipment for children aged 0 and 4 to be able to play with fun, and the response was quick and complete. I want to stay again!

    Noritaka2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

    Rosie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a hostel with attentive consideration from the host. The house is very clean and there is no shortage for me.

    Sooji2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a great week at Morris and Yuka’s place in Keaau. We were amazed by the amenities in the house - it was extremely well stocked with everything you could need and then some! I always wish for a lighted magnifying makeup mirror (which is usually only found in really fine hotels) - well guess what! We were also amazed by the gifts of food that were waiting for us - fruit, coffee, candy, wine, bottled water, eggs, rolls, jam, butter, and sausage. I thought that was very generous. The listing was very clear and accurate about the road noise - this did not bother us, but it might bother some. There were also frog and bird noises, which, again, did not bother us. We liked that we could recycle and send our fruit and veggie scraps to the compost pile, like we do at home. The location was safe and convenient to Hilo and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Morris was a great communicator, and we corresponded frequently through Airbnb whenever I had questions. It was a great stay and a good getaway from the cold upstate NY winter. Mahalo to Morris and Yuka!

THE POOLHOUSE!! Have your very own private resort just 6 miles from the beautiful Kohala Coast -- where all the islands's best beaches can be found (all just a short drive away). The Poolhouse comes with your very own salt water pool with waterfall & outdoor BBQ & King bed. Guests have access to complimentary & guest-minded Big Island Vacation Services. Owners live onsite on one of the 3 lots that comprise the Poolhouse grounds & can be of help when needed. Beach items are complimentary.
THE POOLHOUSE!!! Have your very own private resort. Just 6 miles from the beautiful beaches of the Kohala Coast. A-Bay, Waialea Bay, and Hapuna Beach are all just a short drive from your "resort." The Poolhouse comes with a salt water pool with waterfall. The house itself comes complete with everything you need for a private, romantic get away. A fully equipped kitchen with gas stove, frig, microwave and dishwasher. A commercial gas grill is right outside if you feel like cooking and dining next to the pool. Also the Poolhouse has a California king size bed (fold out sofa bed, too), a living area with 55" flat screen (with a "zillion" music choices via Spectrum cable), and high speed WiFi with new routers/WiFi enhancers installed in 2019. Start your day with a early swim in the refreshing salt water (better for your skin) followed by breakfast (provided by guest) next to the pool. Then when you return from a day of adventure or relaxing at the beach (or a round of golf at nearby Robert Trent Jones II designed Waikoloa golf course--just two miles away), have a rest in the outdoor hammock while grilling your dinner on the gas grill as the waterfall gently splashes nearby and completes your perfect day. The Poolhouse was completely renovated in 2013 with a brand new kitchen and bathroom. New flooring installed in June 2019. Our Poolhouse, pool area and grounds are completely smoke-free and drug free. Thank you in advance for your compliance! AIR CONDITIONING, starting May 2019, A/C is now available at an additional $25/day. Still, most folks who sightsee and head to the beach during daytime hours, feel the fans are adequate. But not all. So because we want to make the poolhouse affordable and comfortable, we now offer A/C ala carte. We understand that every guest travels differently, and many will not want or need A/C since, as forementioned, they plan to be out touring most of the day (why pay for something you're not using?!). The hottest time of day at the poolhouse is from 2-6pm. The mornings and evenings are usually quite pleasant, especially with our gentle trade winds. If your plan on using A/C or you think you'd lean that way, please reach out to Bob and Leesa prior to your arrival. However, if you decide during your stay, you would like the comfort of A/C, they will be happy to assist in making sure that happens. Please note that electricity is not cheap in Hawaii, and to keep Poolhouse costs affordable for future guests, we ask that when the A/C is being used, it is when guests are in the Poolhouse. Please don't run A/C while you are not there. GOLF: Nestled in the foothills of Mauna Kea overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Waikoloa Village Golf Course is truly one of Hawaii's most beautiful courses. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is only a five minute drive from the Poolhouse. Beach Equipment: At the Poolhouse we have a lot of beach equipment available to you at no additional cost. Beach towels, beach chairs, coolers, and boogie boards, etc.. Restaurants: Five minutes away you will find a few local restaurants. Pueo's Italian, Lava Java (a great coffee shop), Los Tres Mex takeout and a local Thai takeout. 15-25 minutes away is LAVA LAVA BEACH CLUB (our favorite), Sensei, Macaroni Grill, Under the Bodhi Tree, Blue Dragon, and Seafood Bar, Monstera, and Tommy Bahamas. About 30 minutes away is a local brewery BIG ISLAND BREWHAUS, PAU PIZZERIA, RED WATER CAFE. Beaches: Best and closest beaches to the POOLHOUSE (15-20 minute drive) Anaehoomalu Bay, Mauna Kea Beach, Hapuna Beach, Beach 69! Best beaches on the whole island! We have a fabulous book that we leave with suggestions on where to go, what to see, and where to eat and we are more than happy to give you more suggestions if you desire. Bob & Leesa (and Kelsey) live on the property, too, in a home on one of the three lots that make up the Poolhouse grounds and are available for emergencies or simply answering questions.
The neighborhood is a residential area 15 minutes away from some of the most spectacular beaches on the Big Island. We are about a 30 minute drive from the Kona International Airport.
  • private, quiet and lovely to hear the birds in the morning and walk the neighborhood with the beautiful flowers abounding everywhere

  • The place is very nice. The pool, the yard and the poolhouse itself look great and make you want to spend more time there. We didn't end up using the pool, because the ocean was so close, but enjoyed our stay a lot. The house had everything necessary for a short stay, the bed was comfortable, and the hosts were very friendly.

Nature Lovers! Wake up eye-level with the canopy in a lofted bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows and bohemian furnishings. Nestled among mango trees and rich with daylight, this tropical hideaway offers an unmatched open-air environment with eclectic adornment. Take a 30-foot stroll down a secluded path to your open-air bath house surrounded by plumerias and lush foliage. Enjoy an immersive experience with nature (birds, bees, insects, geckos and whatever nature has in mind). Glamping +++ in the Heart of Kealakekua Bay, featuring the best snorkeling on the Island and wild dolphins.
This eco-hale was built to express the simple beauty of outdoor-inspired living in Hawaii. The climate is comfortable year-round, as we are at 400 ft above sea level. Built in an open-air style with native Ohia posts, you will feel the expansiveness of being in nature, combined with the comforts of home. The open-air spaces have ceiling fans and the 2 bedrooms are totally screened in and give one a "tree house" feel. The hale is decorated in a Bohemian, Balinese influenced style... with natural materials. The hale has a bath house that is 30 feet away on a private footpath featuring an outside shower surrounded by a grove of plumerias, ginger, bananas, ti and other tropical foliage. The Master Bedroom is on the second floor and feels like you're living in the "Golden Glow" Mango trees. It has a King Bed, a Balinese writer's desk, dresser and plenty of room to stretch or do a yoga practiced. One "wall" is floor-to-ceiling screened in window which gives guests an expansive feeling, united with the beauty of Nature. The room is decorated in a modern, bohemian style ~ tasteful, relaxed and comfortable. All bedding is 100% cotton and crisp white. The entire master suite is screened in. The downstairs bedroom is completely screened in and has a queen bed and garden view. It feels more like a tucked away, nest. It is cozy and decorated in a modern, tropical~balinese style with 100% cotton, crisp white linens. The kitchen is well-equipped and has everything you need for basic meal preparation. The entire living area is an open-air concept with an open-floor plan. The kitchen has a 2-person bar area and there's a casual dining table for 4. The living area has a couch day-bed, a comfortable reading chair and an awesome hammock. There are award-winning Haiku ceiling fans in the open-air areas, which are more to help with mosquitos. The decor is a Bohemian, Balinese style in neutral colors. None of the living spaces are screened in. The bathroom is an out-house, located 30 feet away down a secluded foot path. It has no electricity. It has a standard toilet, sink and wonderful outdoor shower with hot water and strong water pressure. Check-out the pictures. It is private to your rental, however once in awhile (~1x/week) from 10am - 3pm, an onsite massage client will use the bathroom as the bath house is adjacent to my massage hale. The massage hale which is down the same path as the bath house is available for massages (from The Tao Within Massage) or you may use it in the mornings and evenings for yoga, trading massages, meditation or relaxation. It has an AMAZING audio engine sound system, and really magical lighting. It is available for your use before 9am and after 4pm. Depending on the day and time of year, the farm can have bugs, mosquitos, geckos, spiders, ants, etc. There are also wild chickens roaming the farm and sometimes they even come and lay an egg in the kitchen (the irony!!). Are you ok with that? We just want to ensure that you're happy ~ this is a tropical, mostly outdoor experience. If you want an indoor experience, this is not for you :-) We are 100% committed to ensuring that our rental is clean and that we have no infestations. We have a pest company that sprays the perimeter of the building on a routine maintenance schedule. But, we cannot control mama nature.
We are 1 mile from spectacular Kealakekua Bay, home to spinner dolphins, incredible turquoise waters and world-class snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking. Nature based living! Think possible mosquitoes, geckos, wild chickens/roosters, coqui frogs, birds, bees, insects, mongoose.. We are viligant about routine pest management, but to enjoy this experience, you need to be at one with nature. We are a HOSTED rental, which is leagally required for agriculurally zoned rentals like ours.
  • Amazing spot. Highly recommend the mango farm. We’ll be back!

  • This Airbnb is truly one of a kind and one that is 100% worth checking out. My friends and I only had time to stay for one night, but had so much fun and felt so free the whole time.

    William2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Honestly, this would be my dream house if I could choose! You feel completely connected to nature as the kitchen and living area is outside but protected from rain. The upstairs bedroom has a view to the stars at night and I could feel the breeze at times come through the screen. It was incredibly peaceful and Heather could not have been more accommodating. I hope to be back sooner than later.

    Lauren2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • The Mango Farm was a fantastic escape and opportunity to relax and enjoy living amongst nature. The space was comfortable and just what we were looking for in an adventure in Hawaii. We'll definitely come back again when we visit the big island.

    Paul2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely little slice of heaven! A wonderful place to stay to relax and commune with nature and Hawaii. Close to amazing snorkeling (Two-Step and Captain Cook) and other places to explore. The hosts Lucia and Jesse were sweet and gracious, and gave my husband and children an informative tour of the Mango Farm. We would love to stay with them upon our return. One thing to note: the entire structure is open to the elements, albeit screened in. The Coqui frogs are loud at night, and if you are not used to sleeping with the windows open, the sound can make sleep challenging at first. I used ear plugs and a lite white noise machine under my pillow and eventually fell asleep. My husband and children did not use ear plugs and were fine. But just know this and plan accordingly.

  • PLEASE READ. BOOK THIS PLACE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK IT IS HEAVEN. There were fresh fruit all around, the bed upstairs is a DREAM. softest linens most comfortable pillows, I wish we had stayed longer and ended the trip here instead of heading back to HNL. The hosts and everyone you interact with are passionate welcoming wonderful hosts. I feel so lucky to have found this slice of heaven. I can get scared but the salamanders toads and roaming hens had me laughing and in the best mood. BOOK IT. heads up you will need to go to choice Mart for some bug spray the mosquitoes loved us BUT the place is just so relaxing you don't even feel the need to scratch.

  • Magical. The host helped us find a place for take out for dinner which was fantastic. When we got back to the Mango Farm it was getting dark and pouring rain. We were trapped in a blissful covered outdoor space with comfy sofa and blankets listening to the rain and then frogs. Extra touches like fresh fruit on the table were nice and you could pick apple bananas from the living room area! Glamping to the max!

The Bali Hut is a beautiful hand carved building done in Indonesia, located on a half acre, surrounded by palm trees and tropical gardens. Sleeping in the hut is a unique and peaceful experience, you will fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and crashing of waves in the distance. The Bali hut is located within walking distance of the ocean and black sand beach.
Cabin/ antique Bali Hut in beautiful Hawaii on one half acre with ocean views on the Big island of Hawaii on the Puna coast, five minutes walking distance to the black sand beach where the dolphins swim and spin, whale watch in the winter months and play in the surf. My rental is just twenty minutes from Pahoa town where you will find many resturants and grocery and health food stores. This beautiful coastline is one of the most picturesque and oldest parts of Hawaii and the black sand beach is accessible for good walkers and good swimmers to enjoy. This coastline road is perfect for a bicycle ride to explore this beautiful paradise's hidden treasures. The lava has stopped now and its a beautiful and safe time to experience the wonders of this transformation including a new black sand beach and tide pools. The Volcano National Park is now open for viewing in many areas. This hut was hand carved in East Timor, Indonesia, sixty years ago and is free standing, open aired, screened with privacy mesh shades. The Bali house is quiet and peaceful, you will sleep to the sound of ocean surf and swaying palm trees and jungle noises. The bathroom and outdoor hot shower are separate from the house and very private, surrounded by trees and plants, their is a privacy fence on the border. Please note that because of the short walk to the shower and bathroom, the steps of the Bali hut and the walk could be a problem for guests that are elderly or have walking problems. The shower is not visible to my home or neighbors. NO COOKING FACILITIES are available, a coffee maker is provided if you wish to bring coffee and other things for your coffee. PLEASE NOTE, NO FOOD SHOULD BE STORED IN THE HUT OR IN YOUR SUIT CASES AND PACKS. A COOLER IS PROVIDED UNDER THE HUT FOR FOOD STORAGE AND FROZEN WATER BOTTLES ARE PROVIDED IS YOU WISH. PLEASE PUT ALL TRASH OUTSIDE OR ON MY PORCH FOR DISPOSAL, MAHALO. Please note this is a non-smoking home and grounds (no exceptions please) in a very quiet neighborhood. Wi Fi is available. Please note although I provide wi fi, it is not city fast but usually pretty consistent. Also their is no cell phone reception on the property but is available down the road. Many guests come to escape being plugged in. I will be happy to tell you of all the great things to do here on our special and beautiful island. A SPECIAL NOTE, I AM LOCATED AT LEAST TWO HOURS FROM THE KONA AIRPORT AND 45 MINUTES FROM THE HILO AIRPORT, I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR STAY. Aloha and mahalo.
My neighborhood is peaceful and very quiet, lots of beautiful plants to see on a neighborhood walk. My backyard is beautiful for plants and star gazing. My neighborhood is also very safe, I do have an office if you wish to lock up any valuables. Parking is available in my driveway, safe and secure.
  • If you want to experience a little oasis of Hawaiin charm...this is the place. Slept very well listening to the coqui frogs and fresh air. True to the pics and Louise is a great host

  • Loved it.

    Jeffrey2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this unique hut. We stayed 7 nights in mid February, rented a Jeep and toured the entire island. Pahoa is such a sweet funky town and the black sand beach down the road from Louisa’s was magnificent (nude but magnificent). The hut is definitely glamping which was exactly what we were looking for. We LOVED falling sleeping to the sounds of the coqui frogs and the breeze in the coconut trees. You can even hear the waves from the beach. We mis—judged the driving distance from one side of the island to the other thinking we would use Louisa’s sweet hut as home base each night. But after 2 days of long driving stretches we ended up camping out of the Jeep 2 nights which was so fun. We packed our days with four wheeling down to hidden beaches, hiking, petroglyph hunting and even the Hilo Zoo. Uncle Richards on a Wednesday night is a MUST. Arriving to Louisa’s to a peaceful rest and a HOT shower at night was magical. The shower is outside which added to our lovely outdoor experience. Louisa is a dear woman who works very hard to make sure your stay is comfortable. When we got low on propane for the shower I simply messaged her and it was changed. The hut is private and definitely an experience.

  • Lovely and unique place to be! I would recommend everyone to stay in Louisa’s Bali hut and enjoy the nature there!

  • This Place is Not only a lovely hat. It is also a Place to make good memories! Thanks to Louisa for her Shared happyness, Susann

    Susann2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • You can expect a rustic stay in a very private and comfortable hut. Louisa is really friendly and accommodating. I slept like a baby with the ocean breezes and sound of the surf late at night. Add numerous birds chirping it was like the ultimate sleeping tonic for me. There’s local food and entertainment a short ways down the road with local music most days but particularly Wednesday and weekends. A 15 min drive to Pahoa and you have a couple of nice restaurants for local cuisine at Kaleo or Paulo’s For excellent Italian. The Tin Shack Bakery has great coffees and baked goods with some vegan and vegetarian options. I was told by other tourists Ning’s Thai and Pahoa Fresh Fish, Linguin’s for Mexican were also excellent choices. If you do a quick drive to Hilo there is two places I enjoyed, The Pond for seafood and bar food or Cafe Pesto was really nice as well. I had fun in the rural setting and enjoyed the unique culture on this part of the island. The locals lead a simple and peaceful life. Thomas

    Thomas2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • The hut was as described and kept very clean. Check in was easy even though I got in late. Louisa was responsive to my communications and very friendly and helpful when I arrived. The area nearby is very beautiful and somewhat remote. From inside the hut I had a good view of the stars at night and it was very quiet with the exception of the coqui frogs.

A romantic studio retreat in the treetops of Volcano just five minutes to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Tree cottage includes a beautiful kitchen, spacious bathroom with indoor/outdoor shower, top-level lanai for viewing the unique local flora, and covered outdoor lounge area for enjoying morning coffee or evening wine with a loved one, rain or shine. Interior decor is mid-century tropical with floor-to-ceiling windows, pristine hardwood floors, and a hanging rattan chair for daydreaming.
As a recent guest said: "As soon as you pull up to the house you feel like you are entering a different world. We were even more blown away when we entered the tree house." Relax in the tranquility of the tree canopy of Volcano, Hawaii. Nestled in a park-like setting, surrounded by ohi'a and hapu'u trees native to this unique part of the world and other tropical plants, this treehouse provides all the creature comforts. At 300 sq. feet, this sweet retreat has been custom-designed and adorned by the host/owner providing a more personal experience for the guests. Amenities such as an easy to access entrance, beautiful decor, a well-appointed kitchen, consistent hot water, electricity, fluffy towels, ceiling fan, wifi, and comfy queen-sized bed make a luxurious take on the treehouse experience we all dream of experiencing. Enjoy the ground-floor covered outdoor lounge area in rain or shine while looking onto the garden area while relaxing on acacia wood furniture, with battery-operated lanterns and string lights for an relaxing setting. Coffee, tea, and oatmeal are also provided for light breakfast. Basics cooking necessities such as utensils, olive oil cooking spray, salt and pepper are supplied. For local climate info and tips for preparing see the bottom of this description. The living area has glass french doors that welcome you in to the cottage. Once inside you'll be inspired by the beautiful pitched pine ceiling, large windows and 8 feet tall sliding glass doors providing a perfect vantage into the trees. At this height you can see the colorful birds flitting from tree to tree and the clouds rolling in from the coast. The living area is separated from the kitchen and bathroom, so each room is its own. The kitchen has hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry and quartz counter tops. It comes complete with a four-burner gas stove, small fridge, full-sized sink, coffee maker, and toaster oven. The bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with pebble floor and a rain shower head for an incredible experience. The big windows, flower-shaped vessel sink, quartz counter tops, tiled floor, and fluffy bath linens provided give the bathroom the feeling of a beautiful, relaxing spa. The lush outdoor tropical garden evokes a feeling of privacy, peace, tranquility, and a change of pace from everyday life. House water is potable and chemical-free. Piped in from the outdoor rain catchment system, the water is purified with a UV system and filtered. The tree cottage was built by a local contractor, engaging local businesses for the materials. Shannon's hands-on management (even cleaning between guests!) and pride in ownership for the property results in a tree cottage guests can feel comfortable staying in. Climate info and tips for preparing: Even though you are in Hawaii, being on the side of the volcano at a higher elevation and in the rainforest means it gets cooler at night and the climate is changeable. It is advisable to wear layers and prepare for rain with water resistant outerwear for your outdoor adventures. Consider bringing warm comfortable clothes to lounge in or outside the tree cottage. Fleece is always a good cozy option here.
True to the Hawaiian translation of the street name, meaning 'beautiful forest', the property is surrounded by rainforest jungle on all sides with a driveway from the street. The tree cottage is set back about 100 feet off the street for extra privacy. Just two miles (four minute drive) from the infamous Volcanoes National Park and one mile away from the quaint and charming Volcano Village. This artistic enclave has an art center, gallery, gardens, shops, restaurants, lodges, gas station, and a nature reserve.

  • This place is a gem. Amazing location and super comfy + beautiful

    Lauren2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful space! It was just what we were looking for - private, clean, and close to any activity on the island. We had so much fun exploring the island each day then coming back to relax. Thank you so much!

    Barbara2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse itself is beautiful. We went to the Hilo farmers market before staying & had plenty to fresh fruit to cut into our provided oatmeal each morning - Shannon was kind enough to provide gluten free oatmeal & bars since my boyfriend has Celiac's - thank you so much!!! The space is beautiful. We were undisturbed. It's so close to Volcano National Park & this little artsy Cafe (it's in Shannon's guide) that had gluten free & vegan options that we loved. Definitely recommend.

    M2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • The tree house was absolutely beautiful and in a lovely peaceful spot about 10mins from the national park. Shannon was a brilliant host - very quick to answer our questions and there were lots of thoughtful touches around the treehouse. Local recommendations were all brilliant - we particularly liked the Ohelo cafe and lava rocks cafe.

    Alexandra2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon’s treehouse was absolutely perfect in all aspects. The space itself was immaculate, and decorated so nicely. All the appliances were brand new, and everything had that extra touch so you could tell so much love went into creating it. It is a scant 5 mins to Volcano National Park and less than that to one of our favorite Thai places ever! I cannot wait to stay at the romantic treehouse again.

    Pia2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • The dream woodland fairy aesthetic, complete with pheasant visitors :) It's very open, so make sure to bring layers - but the bed's plenty warm. Shannon gave us tons of tips on local spots, and communicated often to make sure we were having a good experience.

  • Jade’s place is the most relaxing and peaceful place. The environment is truly an amazing and life changing experience. Highly recommend the Lava Temple. ♥️♥️

    Julie2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was a super lava experience.... a beautiful, bohemian very open air space surrounded all around with lava. It was such a unique place to arrive at. Jades' assistant, Emily was so accurate in describing the drive in " Just keep going forward." It was worth it. We spent hours exploring the lava surrounding the home. Amazing to see life springing up from this black carpet, filled with gold and blue glistening "stuff".

  • The Magical Lava Temple is perfect for the adventurous person who is looking for a true connection to one of Hawaii’s greatest features- the volcano. This Airbnb really made our vacation special and is something that I will never forget.

Quite basic kitchen equipment but part of the off grid experience. Great advice by Jade of activities off the beaten track, including hidden lava tunnel!

  • We had an amazing stay at Maria and Steve’s throughout our time in Hilo! They have a great setup for couples with a lovely bedroom, clean bathroom and a perfect lanai for hanging out in the nice Hawaiian outdoors. Our hosts were helpful and shared great tips about the island and made us feel very welcome! 10/10 would stay again.

  • Wonderful spot. It is only 5 or 10 minutes from the Hilo airport but you can hear the ocean at night. The rooms are large, attractive and clean. There is a sweet lanai with kitchenette and counter for eating. Maria and Steve are great and can give you suggestions for places and activities to experience.

    Robin2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Maria and Steve's place; our own little home, with two lanai's. We ended up following the food suggestions from Maria, eating at Seaside Restaurant. Truly great food and service. The back lanai was our late night meeting space, with the rains, the cokais, the sound of the ocean a block away. I appreciated being outside of Hilo town and within walking distance of several beach parks. It was a great time to be had. Much kindness and aloha spirit graced our stay.

    Hillary2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon last month and we absolutely loved the place. There is tons of space to relax in, a big bathroom, and an outdoor lanai (patio) to chill on and listen to the rain/natural sounds. You can easily walk to some amazing beaches (Carlsmith) where you can walk in the water and see large green sea turtles. Maria and Steve provided free snorkeling gear, which we really appreciated. In addition, our amazing hosts provided us with delicious homegrown fruit and answered all of our questions about the locals spots to check out. You won’t be disappointed. You need a car to get around, but its a short drive to Hilo for night life/restaurants and about an hour from Volcanoes National Park (must see).

The kitchenette includes a sink, full refrigerator, microwave, electric cooktop with two burners, toaster-oven, Keurig coffee maker, French Press, Magic Bullet (shake maker) and all necessary kitchen utensils and condiments (e.g., coffee, tea, salt, pepper, olive oil, basic spices). Our home is centrally located in lower Puna. The rustic town of Pahoa is five miles to the north; the Pacific is five miles to the south. There are many intentional communities a few miles from the house: e.g., Hawaiian Sanctuary (yoga, permaculture, and Hawaiian culture). Our property is 40 minutes from the attractions of Hilo and about one hour from Volcano National Park. North of Hilo are the awesome Akaka Falls and the spectacular Hawaii Tropical Gardens. One could easily spend a week here and not see everything. Guests are encouraged to use us as a resource in planning their stay. We can recommend the best places to go swimming, dancing, yoga, massage, etc. There are a rich variety of places to eat in the area, which are included in a resource book (translated into Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Korean) that we have created for our guests. We love where we live and enjoy sharing our excitement. Sitting on the lanai or strolling on the property, one experiences a dance of tropical weather, an interplay of bright sunshine, billowy, drifting clouds, soft rain showers, and the sensual feel of trade winds. Make this place a home base for your exploration of lower Puna and the east side of Big Island. The price includes the following Hawaiian taxes: Transient Accommodations Tax: 10.4% General Excise Tax: 4.0% No security deposit is required.
In our opinion, Puna is the most fascinating and lush area of Big Island. From Kalapana to Kopoho, from the Red Road to Pahoa--you will be experiencing the richness of living in a tropical rainforest. This is the furthest eastern part of the Hawaiian Islands and has a special place in Hawaiian lore. It attracts those who are adventurous, seeking to expand their spirits, and desiring to live in congruence with nature. It is our belief that there are a very high percentage of mindful people who live here.
  • Robert and Konrad's place is a peaceful small sanctuary surrounded by lush vegetation and flowering trees. It is truly a special place to relax, far removed from the demands of the outside world. The beds are very comfy and the kitchenette has all one needs to make coffee/tea and cook a meal. Perhaps the best part of the home is the lanai which has a lovely sitting area and is lit up with warm bistro lights in the evening. Everything in this home is spotless and clean. So happy to have the opportunity to stay with them!

  • First off they are goals ok!!! They property it self is so amazing! Everything you would need they provides. From chargers, bathroom amenities, a tour book, even provided eggs, bread, and fruit from their garden. They even have a washer and dryer for your use! The patio is so nice to sit and relax at night and the bistro lights adds just the right touch. It’s so peaceful just listening to the bird sitting out there early in the mornings! The beds were so comfortable. Honestly Robert was so nice and inviting, and the place is amazing highly recommend.

  • Konrad and Roberts place was wonderful. Located in a quiet neighborhood with nature all around which helped for winding down after a busy day. We would recommend to anyone and definitely book again ourselves!

    Matt2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best stay here. Directions were super simple to get there. Konrad welcomed us and showed us around the property. They supplied us with all the essentials and more. The bed we slept in was very comfortable. Great local tips in the book for where to eat and things to do. They are very easy to communicate with and happy to answer questions. Hope to be staying here on the next trip! Highly recommend Konrad and Robert's place for your trip!

    Julia2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an incredible stay at Konrad and Robert's place - if you are looking for a place to decompress and experience the natural beauty and history of the Big Island, we highly recommend staying here! Konrad and Robert left us everything that we could have possibly needed to feel like we were at our own home, including fresh fruit from their garden and some items to make breakfast. We also appreciated their recommendations for food and things to do in the area (all organized in a binder with guidebooks for additional reference). Coming back at night from a day of exploring to the sounds of coqui frogs and occasional light rain was magical, and we sat on the lanai every morning with our coffee enjoying the sunrise and the view of their property. We would love to return some day and hope that other visitors enjoy their stay as much as we did. Konrad and Robert, thank you for being such thoughtful, wonderful hosts!

  • If you are wondering if you should stay here - the answer is yes. Don't hesitate, book it! The area is great in general, but staying here with Konrad and Robert made it truly divine! Upon our arrival they greeted us in person, and had prepared an extraordinary fruit bowl, and set us up with bread, eggs, creamer, etc! The home itself is stylish, comfortable, and cozy. Beds are great! Robes were provided and all the towels you could ever need. The porch is divine, and is where we spent all of our evenings and mornings. The hammock swings are very comfortable, and the full exterior dining table has room for everyone! The kitchen is perfect for preparing home cooked meals and there is a grill (imagine grilled pineapple at sunset 😍) I haven't even mentioned my very favorite part yet! The outdoor shower. This is a divine sunrise and sunset experience. There is also a beautiful indoor shower, but the outdoor one is spectacular! The binder in the house had great local recommendations for meals, experiences and we got some of our best tips from this! The home is situated on stunning grounds with manicured gardens! It is also located very near to the 2018 lava flow, which Robert reminded us to be respectful when visiting as there have been issues with tourists coming in to see it. He told us we could state that we were his guests if someone asked, and that made us feel very comfortable. Other highlights: came fully stocked in regards to shampoo/conditioner/etc. It had a washer and dryer with soap/etc. Rumba to clean the floors! Hands down one of the best experiences our group has ever had traveling. Amazing job guys!!

    Alyssa2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The place is a beautiful and quiet home with lovely hosts! Robert greeted us kindly and has nice suggestions on where to go. I would definitely recommend!

    Jessica2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Robert and Konrad are thoughtful hosts. Pāhoa is wicked cool we just loved the vibe and local recommendations our hosts provided. Hope to be back again soon. The place is clean and beautiful. Amazing landscaping and so incredible to see the results of the 2018 lava so nearby. We kept saying to each other every morning “another day in paradise.” ❤️❤️❤️

  • This airbnb is absolutely the best airbnb in the Big Island, The over view of the whole Kona and beach from this house will over your imagination. The host has given me many useful informations which helped me spend a better vacation on Big Island.

    Zheng2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the fantastic view and the "outdoor living" at Steve's place! So much that it made it hard to leave there to do our planned vacation activities. The unit was very clean, comfortable and had plenty of storage. Communication with Steve was quick and easy. Highly recommend this Airbnb!

    Betty2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • The location of this home is amazing! It is off the main road, and it is so quiet and peaceful up here. The hosts have some stuff available to use (snorkel, beach chairs, etc), which we were very thankful for. Unit is super clean, and I loved the giant shower. The view is the best- it was wonderful to wake up to it in the mornings. I loved it!

    Lisa2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Steve was a wonderful host and we enjoyed our stay very much. Very peaceful setting and gorgeous views.

  • Stayed for 5 nights and definitely stay here again!

    Julie2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot rave enough about this place. It’s amazing and the views are unbelievable. You’re gonna want to stop to the grocery store on your way up, because once you’re here you won’t want to leave. Sleeping with a fan and the screen door open was just unbelievable. Perfect temperature. And breathtaking views.

    Chelsea2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Positively beautiful. A really unique find. Watching the sunset by the pool felt like it added years to my life.

    Corey2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This was a fun place to stay. Typically Hawaiian with an outdoor kitchen and total access to the outside. The shower was huge and there were two sinks and plenty of room. There was a walk-in closet with ample shelves and hanger space. The panoramic view was spectacular up about 1500 ft elevation. You can see the old airport on the right to the Sheraton hotel on the left and the entire Pacific Ocean looking west. The infinity pool is a nice touch. Sunset and dinner on the Lanai were something to look forward to each day. The only criticism we would have was a lack of hot water in the kitchen area to wash dishes. Everything else was great.

    Vukan2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful, peaceful space to feel connected to the land and the local community. Great tips on local experiences, friendly hosts, and a truly Hawaiian experience. I cannot recommend staying here enough.

    Angela2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is pretty much perfect for 2 persons. There's a small kitchen to cook small meals in, a great hot water shower, a small sofa, bean bags for sitting around, even 2 lanais! It always feels welcoming, peaceful, and warm, which is exactly what you'd want to come back to after a day of exploring this awesome bit of land. It's close enough to Hilo for a convenient drive away, but just far enough to be surrounded by lush greens by day, and stars by dark night. Also keep an eye out for magnificent neon green lizards with hot pink stripes who hang at the lanai. Anzu and Bill are perfect hosts - welcoming, full of helpful information about things to do, and also gives a lot of space. It's one of the best places I've stayed in through Airbnb, so wld totally recommend this!

    Jac2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great! A cute little cabin with a little distance between the main house and the cabin to keep things private. Bill and Anzu are great hosts who made an effort to give recommendations for things to do on the island that I might have missed otherwise. The cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the two decks (one out front, and one behind the cabin) are great for taking in the beautiful greenery. They also provide snorkelling gear and beach towels. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful stay a little ways out of the city.

    Jordan2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is so relaxing. The surrounding plants and cool breeze with floral scents made our vacation week the best we ever had. No television was a real plus.

    Arlene2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Tucked away from the city, this is a wonderful place to feel like you're hanging out in a tree house. I was only there briefly, but enjoyed the stars and sounds of nature. Wonderful hospitality!

    Katie2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and peaceful. Location is perfect for accessing Hilo and the National Park.

    Danielle2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful and calm house in a big garden. My kids loved to stroll around. Also Anzu and Bill, which are living close, are very kind and helpful. It is a place where we would come back!

All new! Enjoy sweeping ocean views from the spacious lanai or relax after a hard day at the beach in one of the bathtubs with views. Spacious 2,140 sqft unit accommodates up to 10 guests: 3 regular double beds, 1 sleeper sofa and up to 2 airbeds. Ideal location between downtown Kona and most beautiful beaches on the island. Check our reviews!
*** First, a few quotes from previous guests: * "Marcus’s home is exactly as described, including in the photos - very clean and welcoming with a lots of light and a nice view..." (Kathryn, March 2018) * "If I were going back, I would not even look at other places, I would go directly to Marcus'" (Clark, March 2018) * "It's hard to know where to begin...staying at Marcus's lovely home exceeded our already high expectations!" (Anne, Feb 2018) * "Marcus's place is amazing! The views are to die for, and there is everything and anything you can think of..." (Stephanie, Feb 2018) * "This was probably the best Air B&B we’ve ever stayed in..." (Christine, Jan 2018) * "I don't often write reviews but Marcus and his property were amazing and I needed to tell everyone..." (Mark, June 2017) * "Staying with Marcus is like having a friend's house on the island! Marcus was professional, caring and provided EVERYTHING we needed to have an amazing stay..." (Hsiawen, May 2017) * "This was my first airbnb experience and it picked me up and blew me away!!! I originally thought when I booked my reservation with Marcus and saw the pictures that 'no way' was this house that incredible. Pictures do not do this house justice!!!" (Yvonne, Nov 2016) * "I travel a lot. Marcus' place has topped the list as a favorite..." (Lucie, June 2016) * "This is just one amazing home. I've stayed in 5 star hotels that have offered less...." (Joseph, May 2016) See many more reviews under the review section. *** The spacious 2,140 sqft (199 sqm) upper unit of the 2 story house can be yours. The downstairs unit is usually occupied by the owner. The living area opens up to the lanai (addtl. 700 sqft - 65 sqm), which most people on Hawaii use like a regular room - in this case with great views and well ventilated. It almost feels like two homes in one, because the two master bedroom suites with their own bathrooms are located on the opposite sides of the home. Two TV sets feature your top channels, or log in to your Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime or others as main "screen entertainment sources". Use the Nexus 7 tablet in the unit or bring your own, WLAN is pretty solid and fast (that's not a given on other parts of the island). Enjoy your daily smoothie and coffee using the high quality blender and coffee machine. I have a 9 year old daughter and I´m happy to let you use most of her stuff if you bring your kid(s): play kitchen, scooter, high chair, stools to reach the sinks, etc. Basically all the stuff you don´t really want to bring on a plane! Let´s talk before you get here, I can also leave the beach wagon for you (as you may know, taking the kids to the beach is like moving an army, so this wagon is worth it´s weight in gold!). * * * FAQ´s: Q: How far is the closest beach? A: Closest Beach is "Pine Trees", about 10-15min by car. It´s great for surfing and sunset dining on the beach, not so much for swimming though. For swimming, that would be "Kua Bay", 15-20min drive from the house. Pristine turquoise water makes it a favorite for locals and guests! Q: How far is it to town / grocery shopping / restaurants / airport? A: Drive to town is 15-20min. There´s Costco close by (10min) and you´ll find stores like Target, Safeway, Walmart and specialty stores right in town. There´s also a store called "Island Naturals", carrying mostly organic food. You´ll find plenty of restaurants in town for every taste. For some first recommendations check out the "Guidebook" on this site. Also I have a long list with recommendations on the tablet computer in the house and obviously I´m always there to point out something nice for you in person once you get here. My guests keep telling me how much they appreciated the location of the house (check their reviews, it is mentioned over and over again). It´s close to town as well as to the nicest beaches of the island a bit more up north. Drive to the airport is just 10min and you can see planes coming in and going out from the lanai - without any noise impact. Q: How many guests does this unit accommodate? A: Short answer: up to 10. Long answer: 10 is kind of pushing it. There are 3 bedrooms, each featuring a double bed (2 bedrooms have a queen and one has a king). One of the bedrooms with a queen bed also has a single bed. Then there´s a sleeper sofa in the living area. Finally, if you really wanted that, I can provide you with an additional airbed (maybe for the kids?). Please keep in mind though that the dining table on the lanai can accommodate 8 persons max. But if you´re happy with eating in shifts or only need a place to sleep anyway - fine with me. From experience with previous groups I´d say that up to 8 is easy and everyone still has some privacy. Q: What is there to do? What kind of attractions are there on the Big Island / in Kona? A: Honestly, there´s so much great stuff that this question is hard to answer. It all depends what your needs and desires are, and chances are high that you´ll find a matching activity here. From world-class snorkeling and scuba diving to surfing, lazy beach days or challenging hikes, whale watching trips or helicopter tours to the volcano, swimming with dolphins or driving up to the observatories, discovering yummy local take-out specialties to 5 star restaurants, there´s an abundance of great stuff to experience. Just do a quick research on the internet and you´ll see. Please feel free to ask any question you still may have. I might just answer it on this section, so that future guests can benefit from it as well. Thank you!
It´s a safe and quiet residential neighborhood. The house is located at the end of a dead end street, so traffic is minimal.
  • Our group of 6 had the perfect stay. Every amenity was available and the space was just right in every way. Beautiful views, so incredibly relaxing!!

    Caitlin2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Marcus's home had everything our family of 4 needed to enjoy a fantastic week on the Big Island. Spacious, well equipped, sweeping views, comfy beds and a wonderful lanai to take it all in. We especially enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and waking to the sounds of nature. Appreciated all the beach gear, wash & dry facilities and extras that we didn't have to go out and buy or lug with us on the airplane. Marcus is generous, hospitable and easy to communicate with. We're already missing our morning coffee looking out over the water. What a wonderful time we had! Never easy leaving paradise :) Thank you Marcus.

    Kelly2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Marcus's place was excellent. The view was even better than we had expected from the pictures. Our family loved having dinner on the lanai and enjoying the sunset every day. Marcus was very welcoming and had absolutely everything we would need during our stay. I would definitely stay at Marcus' given the opportunity.

  • This place is amazing!

    Jamie2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • It was our first night on the big island of Hawaii, a 15-minute drive from kona airport. The whole house is clean, neat and warm. All daily necessities are complete and the washing machine is convenient to use. The most amazing thing is the 180-degree sea view. Watching the sunrise and sunset every day, happiness arises spontaneously! Marcus is very outstanding, prepared champagne for us, and also booked dinner for us, careful and thoughtful! Respect guests' privacy. Three generations of my family spent three perfect days here!

    Momosky2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • Place was amazing! Very close to the Kona airport. Our favorite part was the amazing view where we spent all our sunrise and sunsets. We have a family of 5 and there was plenty enough space for everyone. Thanks for the amazing hospitality Marcus :)

He even gives us some valuable tips by email on what we can do in Athens, taking from his personal time. We really appreciate his tour and recommend it. Thank you, Clement!

Peter was an amazing and gracious host—thank you again for the delicious homegrown bananas, lemons, limes, and mango! We recommend this cottage without reservation and would definitely stay here again.

  • This Airbnb is a real gem. The view, location, and simple charm are the best things about this cottage. Just a short drive away you can be at some idyllic beaches and attractions. Or stay in and enjoy the breezes and seemingly endless view of the west side of the island. Peter is a great host and will share fresh fruits right from his orchard. You won’t be disappointed staying here.

Experience the magic of old Hawaii in a unique setting of great beauty, character and comfort.
PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT BOOKING ANY NEW STAYS FROM OFF ISLAND FOR THE MONTHS OF MARCH AND APRIL DUE TO COVID CRISIS. I AM LEAVING MY CALENDAR OPEN ONLY FOR GUESTS WHO ARE ALREADY HERE ON THE ISLAND, AND ARE IN DANGER OF BEING STRANDED WITHOUT A PLACE TO STAY. MAHALO FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING. We offer a stylish guest room with a pillow-top queen bed, bathroom with garden shower and lanai living area with an aquarium and steps to the inviting swimming pool. A refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are provided for your use. You have a table and chairs on your room's lanai overlooking the pool and gardens. There are pool and beach towels. We also have water shoes to let you explore the tide pools and beaches nearby. Unfortunately, the eruption destroyed our beautiful snorkeling spot nearby, but replaced it with a big black sand beach, at the end of a hike over the still warm lava. The Guest House is one of several buildings in an extraordinary architectural compound. The buildings surround a courtyard with a swimming pool, enclosed gardens and a lagoon with fountains. The complex sits in a spectacular landscape of exotic plants and blooming flowers. Numerous works of Asian art are on display in the gardens. Mangolay is a private, peaceful world in the center of a beautiful tropical rain forest. We are close to the ocean in a setting that is a part of Hawaii as it used to be. Solar-powered, environmentally conscious. There are 2 friendly dogs on property, thus we don't have thieves sneaking in, or wild boars using the pool. They will bark when you arrive, but will quickly will learn you belong here. Close by are tide pools, ocean coves, a clothing-optional black-sand beach and unique Hawaiian weekly markets. Pahoa Town, a 30 minute drive, offers a colorful atmosphere and several good restaurants. Hilo and Volcano National Park are easily accessible and offer a variety of attractions. Mangolay is truly a paradise in Puna, a unique opportunity to stay in a very special magical place.
First off, let me answer the usual silly question: Waikiki is on Oahu, a completely different island 300 miles away. We are not any where near to it. Kona is on the other side of the island, about one hundred miles away, and about a 2 hour drive over the gap between the volcanoes. Most guests like to break up their vacation, with a stay on the Kona side, to experience the Dry Side of the island. This is where the major tourist industry is centered. Shopping malls, resorts, bars, diving and night life, and the traffic jams that come with it. Hilo is about 28 miles away, fun little college town, some good restaurants, a few museums, and the friendliest locals you will ever meet. Pahoa Town is about 30 minutes away. Super market, Hardware store, 6 or so restaurants, no visible means of support, very rustic and laid back. Kaleo's is the best restaurant in town, and it's a good idea to stock up at Malama Supermarket on your way here, so you don't have to back track up after arriving here. There is Da Store in Hawaiian Shores, about 5 miles from here. Better to shop in Pahoa. Volcano Park is about 45 minutes away. What's here? Thick rain forested area, you will be driving in through the burial grounds, and ruins. There are hidden tide pools you can swim in, and a black sand beach you can hike to, over still warm lava. We are still discovering new beaches as the lava cools. We have one of the last wild bits of coast line left on the island. The entire area is off the grid, most properties are 3 and 6 acres here, so everyone has a private world of their own. It's the land that time forgot.
  • We are so in love with the house, the guests and of course the two doggies that it is hard for me to share it. We want to keep it a secret so we can go back all the time. Much gratitude to you Paul, Josh, Felicia and Tulu hound for being such gracious and generous souls Mahalo Bea 🇧🇷 Jim

  • Paradise within paradise. There is no other way to describe the absolutely gorgeous grounds and living space. Paul and josh were the most amazing hosts, shown up only by their super friendly pups ☺️ The drive out is amazing as well. I enjoyed the steam and lava views as well as the lush jungle views. Such a place of contrasts! would 100% stay here again.

    Tracy2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • We truely enjoyed our stay! Paul and Josh are wonderful hosts. Everything was perfectly clean and we would highly recommend this apartment in the middle of the djungle. We would love to come back!

    Sandra2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Paul’s property is just as depicted in the photos - so gorgeous! His gardens are immaculate and the pool so clean and refreshing. Paul gave us great tips of things to do in the area. Stay here if you want to get away from it all and relax!

    Ann2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a sanctuary in the jungle. It was extremely peaceful sleeping amongst the nature in your comfortable suite that was clean, spacious, and beautiful. We appreciated the thoughtful gestures from both the hosts, they left notes about their air bnb specifically, provided us fruit from their property and some local tips that topped our trip off into an amazing experience. Their property is absolutely beautiful, situated in the perfect location. We highly recommend this a place to stay on the Big Island!

    Lianne2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Mangolay was a perfect home base for our exploration of the Big Island. Paul and Josh were outstanding and welcoming hosts who made us feel at home in their home. Mangolay is a beautiful property that will meet every expectation for a tropical getaway. The studio itself is charming and comfortable (and has a magnificent outdoor shower!) and the gardens surrounding the property were a paradise. Our next return visit to the area will definitely include a stay at this special place!

  • A nice getaway. Great location and very friendly host

  • There are so many words I want to use to describe this place, but no words are quite enough. Purely wonderful. My only regret is that we had to leave! From the hospitality to the location to the pure homeyness. Could not get any better :)

Located in South Kona, this Kona Paradise home is a wonderful place to come relax, cook a nice meal and watch the sunset on our enclosed covered lanai. Enjoy our very peaceful 2 bd/2ba home. Pebble Beach is just a short drive down the hill ( 4 mns. with steep but secured central Kaohe Rd.)where one can swim and snorkel as well as hike the King's Trail along the coast. ( large parking at the End of Mapuna Rd- last lateral Rd. at the bottom) Hookena Beach is just 5 miles North and is often the location where the dolphins come to play. We are about a 20minutes drive through beautiful coffee farm lands, direction to the town of Kailua-Kona. Volcanoes National Park and Green Sand Beach is about an 1 hr to 1.5 hours South. TV: Smart Flat screen TV (,Flicks,Hulu,Vaduz,YouTube,Netflix..) Private Bathroom and King size bed in Master bedroom with views of the ocean from the lanai. Also King size bed in second bedroom. Kitchen is well equipped.
Kona Paradise is a very safe and clean neighborhood. Access to Pebble beach at bottom of hill is one of my favorite beaches. Parking : do take the last lateral Mapuna Rd.on your left. Sometimes ( only sometimes) it is a bit rough and the current is to strong to swim in , but one can always stay at the shore and let the waves roll you around on the pebbles. Very special and fun! Also some nice hiking along the coast line to the left and to a black sand beach,to the right. Some attractive wild goats around, inoffensive wild pigs and their little ones, cut and funny small green geckos.Best Sunsets and ( or) Stars from the beach. Magic Time ! Kaohe, the central rd. of Kona Paradise ,from Hwy. to the shore( Pebble Beach) is pretty steep ,but fully secured.
  • This place has a wonderful view and very peaceful atmosphere! Will book again:)

    Melodie2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Quiet, serene home located away from the hustle and bustle of Kailua-Kona. If you’re looking to escape the rush and be closer to nature, this place is for you.

    Timothy2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had an amazing stay here for our honeymoon. The property felt safe and the views were spectacular! We were able to easily do laundry downstairs and borrow some beach chairs and an umbrella for a day at the beach. Check-in and check-out were easy, no issues. Definitely recommend if you want to enjoy the Captain Cook area! Pebble beach is nearby and definitely better to get to by car - we made the mistake of walking and boy, it was a difficult climb back up!

    Caroline2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great atmosphere and location. House is cozy, kitchen is nice, everything is peaceful and relaxing. Had all the swimming/beach stuff we needed and our two year old felt at home. Beautiful flowers and grennery and the sunset views were amazing. Highly recommend this place, and Guy was very helpful with tips on where to go and what to do. We would go back for sure.

  • What's not to like? I would give this peaceful home-on-the-hill a 6-star rating. Is it for you? Expect nights that are inky black with a heavenly star show. Expect utter quiet except for bird calls, the rustle of breezes, and occasional raindrops hitting the roof. And expect about a dozen friendly geckos who are amazing acrobats. You will find plenty of hot and cold water, lots of towels, a top-notch washer and dryer (but I used the clothes line), and a well-equipped kitchen. Comfortable beds, too. Porches are screened and windows open on all sides to catch the breezes. Oh, one more thing: The Hill. Think San Francisco. Nestled at the end of one of the cross-streets, this home is perched about 2/3 of the way up a hill. Drive down to the bottom to find a black pebble beach and the King's trail. Great to hike in both directions but bring good boots. Up top is Highway 11, zero road noise, and the highway will take you to markets, parks, and other beaches (20-30 min drive). Guy, Delphine's dad, did a wonderful job hosting, start-to-finish. He's knowledgeable about the area. And in case you are bilingual, il parle francais. Merci beaucoup! A lovely 9-day stay and wish it had been longer. 6 Stars!

  • Tucked away in a neighborhood, windows and lanai with west-facing spectacular views of the ocean, casual, comfortable fully equipped home----this wonderful place is just as it is described: Peaceful House. We loved it here!

  • wonderful place to stay, very secluded and quiet, great for a restful escape from our busy lives, we would definitely come back for another stay

    Alex2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful start to our Hawaii vacation. The host, Guy (Dephine's dad), is a sweet man who sent wonderful warm friendly and helpful messages before we arrived. He provided excellent directions, and even told us where the local supermarket is, so we could get groceries on the way to the house. Later we benefitted from his generous tips on places to go, nearby beaches, bakeries, etc. There was also a number of books and brochures in the house with more information about things to see and do on the Big Island. The house was comfortable, well-furnished and very nicely and creatively decorated with beautiful views of the ocean from the lanai, the living room and the master bedroom. The kitchen was great with a wonderful stove and all-new appliances; great place to cook. There was a beautiful dining table near the kitchen, but we preferred to eat at the table on the lovely lanai that wraps around ¾ of the house with a big eating area & potential sleeping area where you enter. There were lots of creative little touches in the house, such as the toothbrush holder in the shape of a pretty palm tree. A stairway leads to an area below the house where the washer and dryer are. There is also a lot of snorkeling and other equipment the guests can use. We made good use of some beach chairs that we were able to borrow and take to the beach one day. We had a fabulous time at Peaceful House in Kona Paradise. My spouse took Guy's suggestion to put little bits of fruit on her fingers while out on the lanai, to have the little geckos come and literally eat out of her hand. (I was asleep in bed at that time; she told me about it later.) My only regret was that I forgot to do the same. It rained on our last day there, and in our rush to drive to our 2nd place on the other side of the island, I forgot to entice the geckos to eat from my hand. (The 2nd place had no geckos.) The place was wonderful and so was the host, Guy. He is very communicative and friendly if you want communication, but totally respecting of your privacy if you don't. I highly recommend the Peaceful House in Kona Paradise.

We are a nicely appointed condo in the heart of Old Kona Town. We are across from the Hulie'e Palace and only a couple of hundred feet from the ocean. There are restaurants, galleries, Kona coffee houses and exotic shopping right out our doors. Tax #: W70176163-01 Price includes state taxes.
This beautiful condo was just fully and expertly remodeled and furnished. It is new inside with sophisticated Polynesian accents. We are in the heart of downtown Kona on the island of Hawaii or "The Big Island". We overlook the oldest church in Hawaii, Mokuaikaua Church, and the Hulihee Royal Palace in downtown Kona. We are steps away from the pier, restaurants and special activities. This is the heart of the old village of Kona, literally in the back yard of the Hulihee Palace. We have one bedroom one bath with large lanai and a new kitchen, fully stocked with all the necessary dishes. Although we are in the core and center of the town, we are quiet because of the church as our closest neighbor. We are on the quiet side of our building orientated toward the church grounds. We have covered and secured parking in a garage and elevators from the parking area. Cable, high-speed internet and a new washer/dryer is included. This is truly a wonderful property unique because of its setting. Our building includes a wonderful pool and barbecue decks which overlook the busy Ali'i Drive and the Pacific Ocean. Step out of the parking garage and you are in the middle of our restaurant and shopping area. Prices include Hawaii tax of 13.42%! This is important when comparing prices because many people add it onto the posted price. WE ARE NON-SMOKING!
I just love living in downtown Kona. We are on the quiet end of the "strip" here along the oceanfront at Kailua Bay. It is quiet in our neighborhood soon after dark. Just a few blocks down along the waterfront are our nightclubs and late-night restaurants with daily live music. It really is a special place, very calm with many shopping, dining and night club options.
  • This unit has everything. Clean and well looked after. It’s in the heart of downtown Kona. Easy to walk the street for local shopping and restaurants. Ed went out of his way to get us special beach chairs that we asked for. We would come back to this unit.

    Caroline2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • The access was simple, Edward always responded to texts and questions fast, and the area is right by the beach and a bunch of shops! Such a cool area with lots to do, right on the ocean. Will definitely be coming back!

    Gabrielle2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • This unit is great...an ideal price in an ideal location. It was convenient to get to places, a wonderful unit layout, and an important aspect of our two weeks on the Big Island.

    Jill2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Edward was such a great host for us! We only stayed with him one night. Our flight got in late, but he was still responsive when we messaged him. He was even willing to work with us on our check out time so we could enjoy our day in Kona without having to lug our bags around with us. The place was stylishly decorated, comfortable, impeccably clean and easy to access. Thank you Edward for a wonderful stay!

    Diana2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • This clean unit is in a quiet location that it very close to the waterfront as well as many shops and stores. It was comfortably furnished inside as well as on the lanai. Edward has stocked his place with many thoughtful items and was quick to respond to our questions. The underground garage parking was very convenient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We are 15 minutes from downtown Kona and shops, 10 minutes from the airport, 7 minutes to Costco, and within 15 minutes to several beautiful beaches. This is the most ideal location when staying in the Kona area.
  • Great place to honeymoon. Jeff even brought us fresh fruit. Marley is also awesome.

    Adam2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • The location of Jeff’s place was perfect for my trip. I enjoyed the cool nights and lovely view. The bed is quite comfortable and being a tall person I really appreciated the high shower head height. The space is clean, parking in a covered garage was a plus, and being greeted by Marley, their dog, in the mornings for belly rubs was sweet. I did not have need to interact with Jeff much but he was always around so I knew if I needed anything I could easily reach him. As a solo traveler I felt safe at Jeff’s place.

    Nicole2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • This was a wonderful stay for the price. Every detail was taken care of, and it is clean as can be! Jeff was a perfect host who was very responsive and attentive during our stay! The property is lovely and we slept very well. It’s super nice to stay out of town for a couple reasons: 1. The crowds and extreme congestion don’t exist at Jeff’s place. 2. The cooler temperatures make for very comfortable sleeping. No complaints 👍🏼

    Laurie Medeiros2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Jeff is very kind and generous. The fruits available are seasonal. We were fortunate to have fresh picked papayas, avocados, guavas, dragonfruit, and bananas. As well as fresh eggs from the chickens. We loved his dog Marley and hugged him everyday. The location had an incredible view and wonderful feel. We will definitely return.

    Juancarlos2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great place. No improvements necessary.

    Sarah2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Jeff’s place was great and he was an awesome host. He shared some “praying hands” bananas and had ample beach supplies on hand. The place is just hit enough for 2 people for a few nights as we explored Kona and the surroundings. We’d definitely stay here again.

    Adam2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Jeff's place was amazing. The view from the house is beautiful and Jeff allowed us to walk basically all around the property. He had chickens and pigs on the property, as well as a cute lab named Marley! We had the best time playing with Marley when we were around. The studio itself was very clean and well kept. Perfect amount of space for two of us and in a great location. The main city/beach area was only 15 minutes or so away, which made it easy for us to come back during the day if we wanted to. Overall, great place to stay.

    Jocelyn2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely small farm in a good residential area above Kona, but still convenient to the town and beaches. Jeff is an attentive host and his enthusiasm to share his love for his farm is a great bonus. This is what makes the BnB stays so much more enjoyable than a homogenous hotel experience.

Make this hawaiian home, bordering serene Makuu Homestead, surrounded by an opulent natural tropical garden, your special retreat. Three miles from the ocean, and a mile from the main highway, Hawaiian Jungle Hangout offers easy access to eastside highlights--30 minutes from Pohoiki bay (newest black sand beach/part of the 870 acres added from new lava last winter), 35 minutes from Volcano National Park, 20 minutes from Hilo airport, 10 minutes from Keaau town, and 10 minutes from Pahoa Village. The hangout offers 1600 sq. feet of living space. A full kitchen, two bedrooms, plus a den which has a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen round, in a comfortable home on a lush acre of tropical fruits and native plant. Explore the garden within lava rock flows. A memorable place to make your home during your vacation or business stay. Also available on the property is asian fused tropical Hawaiian Jungle Hut. Next to the main house with a separate entrance, the hut is perfect for a couple or single guest, having it's own full bathroom, living room, inside washer and dryer, and kitchenette with a tiki bar. I am usually there, but the hut is also wireless and cable connected and available as a separate rental whenever I'm away.
  • Lovely place and very lovely host

  • The place is a gem. Lovely house and area just around the corner from Hilo. Liz was caring and had lots of advices and tips. Would love to return. Mahalo

    Manuel2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Liz's place is fantastic for a couple/family/group of friends who want to just relax in a large space. Very close to Hilo and some nice restaurants the other way (Pahoa?). Liz was extremely responsive via text message and was able to send the housekeeper when we needed help! Mahalo!

    Noreen2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Secluded comfortable roomy house includes washer/dryer very comfortable

    Duane2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • We are so happy we stayed at Liz's place! The house was on a beautiful private rainforest road (her other rental is attached but we never saw or heard the other renters during our stay). We got there super late but check in is via keypad so it worked out. The house had so much of what we needed. A coffee maker, plenty of coffee filters, cooking oil, spices, enough towels and plates/silverware for all of us, and aloe vera. It's about 15 minutes from Target and other stores, about 2 houes to the Kona side, 20 from airport, and 40 from Volcano national park, but the drive everywhere was incredibly beautiful so we did not mind driving everyday. We saw about 2 geckos every night, we did not mind it but they are unavoidable, so keep in mind if that bothers you. AC worked fine and I was able to sleep through the loud nightly rain but 2 of the people in my group were woken up often from it. So again just keep in mind that if you are a light sleeper you will need ear plugs. Would stay here again and highly recommend!

    Deyanira2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful place that is clean and quiet with 360 degree views of lush, green forest.

    Pete2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We got a lot of information before we arrived. Liz explained everything around the house and sent us a lot of information about the area. When we arrived at the house after a long day all of us were so happy because the house was huge and had more than we needed. We really enjoyed staying at the hangout!

    Kornelia2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great home great location. Loved listening to the sounds of the jungle at night! The communication was a bit much. Too many emails and details. Didnt need to know which cupboard cups were in ect as I can figure all that stuff out so had a hard time finding the time on my trip to sit and read through all the pages of emails. Also bbq wasnt usable as it was covered in mold but other then that the trip and house was fantastic. Loved the decor. Had a great feel and felt like home away from home. Thanks Liz!

  • An amazingly peaceful space in the midst of the current chaos across the world. Gorgeous interior - wondrous exterior. The sounds at night were soothing and meditative. A well-maintained home in a tranquil setting. You must stay here!

  • This place was magical! So many beautiful touches inside the house and garden surrounding it. It easily accommodated my group of 6. Wonderful location and just a short walk to the black sands beach.

  • We absolutely loved our stay at this Balinese retreat!! The house is absolutely gorgeous and is surrounded by a stunning forest of exotic trees and flowers. It was the perfect place to stay during a very quiet and relaxing visit to the Big Island.

  • Book it! The house is so beautiful, inside and out. Safe, clean, quiet neighborhood. Perfect for morning walks. Close to the beaches and amenities of Puna. The house is so lovely it is hard to leave. Roomy and clean. We are happy to be local and look forward to staying again.

  • This space is well thought out from the second we pulled in to our archway parking space to the lavish 360 landscaping that surrounded us with Aloha! The exterior and interior are much better than pictured; it's the perfect exotic space to help you feel far away from home on your Big Island vacation! We loved all of the Balinese detail, the various hues of light square windows, the double deck, the hammocks, the living spaces...all of it was better than we could have dreamed! Off the beaten path (about 20 minutes away from Pahao and nestled back in a posh residential pocket) we were surrounded by the well-thought out landscaping and felt all alone the entire stay (except for the few times we'd bump into or hear Carla below who is very pleasant and helpful for anything you might need to know for your visit). A true gem! We will definitely visit again!

  • Peaceful, and beautiful. This is our second time staying here, we come back for the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. The house has everything you need plus comfortable beds. You truly feel like you’ve gotten away when you stay here.

  • Stunning house and perfect for the retreat that we wanted. We loved all the colors and textures. Happened to be here on one of the rainiest times and it was just wonderful to sit out and watch the rain. Best if you want to have some time along the red road, and are not expecting to explore the island from here, as the road is blocked at both ends by lava flows.
