About this listing

Fabulous views over the sea to Laphroaig distillery. Skandi design with serious luxury for one couple to escape to Isle of Islay tranquility (the Queen of the Hebrides). Frequent visitors are Golden Eagles and Hen Harriers. Come and relax in style.

The space

Nestled in to the hillside this architect designed accommodation has expansive views across to Kilnaughton Bay, Port Ellen, mainland Argyll and Ireland. The views are a constant source of pleasure always changing as the light and weather change. Attention to comfort is paramount with cosy underfloor heating, goose down duvet and wood burning stove so that even in the worst of weather it’s possible to snuggle down! In glorious weather the doors can be left wide open with an outdoor table for barbecuing and eating Al Fresco. In the kitchen top of the range Miele oven, induction hob and Tapenyaki mean that all Islay’s wonderful larder can be cooked with delicacy and precision. We want your Islay experience to live long in the memory so we have tried to think of everything!

It is the best place we have enjoyed in a number of trips. The view, the silence and the location have no parallel. The house has details full of taste as the freshly baked bread, the homegrown marmalade and a fridge well provided. The shower invites you to stay for a long time. You can sit in front of the wild grass in the foreground and enjoy the seascape almost forgetting that you want to buy some whiskys. And finally, Richard -and certainly Gus- are a true reflection of all of the above. We couldn't be more grateful.

Richard was a great host, the property is beautiful. We were able to bring our young baby and Richard made us all feel very welcome. Couldn't recommend enough.

Congratulations! You've found an Easter Egg! In video games, you have to look in hidden places and solve riddles to unlock special places. You've found a real life Easter Egg. By looking at places to book on Islay and clicking on this link for Richard's turf roofed cottage, you have found a truly magical place, unique in the world, a precious unlockable that you can visit and enjoy in person. You should not hesitate, you should just book it, you will not be disappointed. In case you need more convincing, this place is incredible - it is everything in the description and more. It is a lovely property, all high-end amenities, superior comfort, nice big bed, kitchen fully appointed (dishwasher!), perfect for two for a romantic getaway. Most amazing is the location, overlooking the sea, the bay, the boats, the islands, the birds. You have to work to get there, a mile on a dirt road, but it is absolutely worth it. Richard was a great host, checking on us, making sure we had everything we needed and asking after us without being intrusive. He even went above and beyond to help out a friend of ours to find a place last minute during festival. Thanks so much to Richard and Sue for sharing this Easter Egg with us!

While we only stayed a short time at Richard's place, and on Islay in general, we thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. For starters, it's situated in an absolutely breath-taking location looking down over the bay. Inside the unit, Richard has thought of every detail. From a wonderfully stocked bathroom to quality cookware and fresh baked bread, you probably won't be left wanting for much- Except for maybe a bit of Islay whiskey to enjoy while you stare out the large beautiful windows.

Great place with amazing views of Port Ellen. Such a unique property we felt no need to go anywhere else in the evening - just to relax and enjoy the views. It was nice touch to have breakfast foods and other bits and pieces awaiting our arrival. Gus the dug provided entertainment and loved to collect sand stones thrown to him.

Our only regret is that we couldn't stay here longer. Photos do not do it justice! Beautiful, peaceful retreat. Richard is a fantastic host—on hand if you need him, but otherwise leaves you to enjoy your stay. His dog Gus was a highlight as well :) We passed by a few other places we had considered, and are so glad we chose to stay here. You won't be disappointed. Thanks again, Richard, for a fabulous stay!

Richard's place was absolutely perfect; the photos on here don't even do it justice. The views were spectacular, and the place was impeccably clean and cozy as can be. Richard even left us some peat for the wood stove, which felt so Islay! Richard is also a master of hospitality. He left us absolutely everything we could need, including coffee, peppermint tea, and fresh baked bread. He also gave us a ride into town when we left our car at a distillery! His place is remote, but it is completely worth it. We cannot wait to return!
