We are technically in Ashaway, Rhode Island. This is a rural town 7 miles from Westerly, Rhode Island, and about 12 miles from Mystic.
Please read the whole description of this property to make sure it is suitable for your family. There is a 26 acre lake here and some electric fencing, which may be unsuitable for young children.
I think the best way to make a decision about booking is to read the reviews enclosed here. I think my guests describe the accommodation even better than I do!
We have a lovely spot just two miles off of I-95, with a 26 acre lake and walking trails. The closest town is Westerly, RI. It is a pretty town, with restaurants and shops, a gorgeous library, and a wonderful park, called Wilcox Park. Westerly recently hosted a project whereby artists from all over the country painted murals depicting the history of Westerly in a retro advertising style. A new theater is about to open with plays and live shows. This is definitely a town that is coming back. Often there will be a festival or concert in the park.
In the apartment, we provide information sheets outlining the best of Westerly and some other areas. Near Mystic is Stonington Borough, CT. ( love Dog Watch Cafe in Stonington). Both towns have nice restaurants and boutiques, and are great for strolling by the water and marinas. In Rhode Island, Watch Hill beach is gorgeous. Narragansett Beach and Wickford and the surrounding towns are very nice. Newport, RI is about an hour away. Newport is known for the 3.5 mile Cliff Walk, which is the waterfront area behind the great mansions. There is also a mansion tour where you will see the interiors of these amazing homes. There is a great selection of restaurants in Newport, as well. Many information sheets in the apartment. Providence, RI is 35 minutes away (north) and has a more extensive offering of restaurants. See Yelp.
The casinos are less than a half hour away. Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium are 4 exits to the south.
Some of my guests have taken fishing excursions. Others have gone on ferry excursions to Block Island and to Long Island.
After touring, sit lakeside with a glass of wine. The photos shown here highlight the different vantage points of the lake, not the views from the apartment windows. Eight years ago, we completed our retirement home - it's a big red barn finished as a home, shown in one of the photos. The airbnb apartment is on the lowest walk-out level of our home. The Airbnb apartment has it's own private patio.
This one-bedroom apartment is beneath our barn/home, on the ground level, and it is an airy, bright walk-out, with it's own private entrance, just about 100 feet from the lake, but without a view of the lake. The apartment is wheelchair-accessible, but the apartment bathroom is not designed for wheelchairs. No grab bars or walk-in bath or shower.
This is not a private cabin in the woods. It might appear that way, because I show so many photos of our green space. The apartment is in our home. We live above the apartment. You will hear us, but we try to be very respectful and quiet. We get up early, but we move around very quietly. We have dogs, so you may hear them walking around. You will have all the privacy that you need. You will not hear party sounds or furniture moving, just the sounds of gentle living. We keep fans running to avoid any mustiness, as this is a walk-out basement, very bright. There are windows. You may keep the fans running or not. They are effective as a white noise machine. ( You hear us less).
This adorable apartment has one bedroom with a queen-size platform bed. We provide all bed linens and towels. The apartment is perfect for one couple, as there is only one queen bed. There are only two chairs for eating at the table. I will not rent to two couples.
The apartment has a great kitchen complete with pots and pans and coffee-maker. I stock a few items in the refrigerator, but I do not serve breakfast. I let my guests make their own breakfast with the items in the fridge. Please let me know if you are vegan, dairy-free, or gluten-free, and I will try to think of some alternatives to the items I usually provide. I put in the fridge: coffee, tea, English muffins, butter, jam, eggs, and granola. I provide enough breakfast items for my weekend guests. People who stay longer will want to go to a grocery store to buy some additional items.
On our property, there are trails into the forest and it's possible to walk back to see the beaver pond. They are creating a little havoc with our water flow, but we kind of love them, too! We recently saw a pair of bald eagles! It was quite a sight ! Other creatures that we see : otters, foxes, deer, turkeys, and occasionally, coyotes. Tick spray is needed if you walk into the woods.
Parking is plentiful. You can pull up pretty close to the red barn home, and that way you will be close to the Airbnb entrance for bringing in your suitcases (on left side of home, inside of a picket fence). We have 7 dairy goats and 2 Boston terriers. We have a small vineyard, a blueberry patch and a fruit tree orchard.
You'll have all the amenities of a private hotel room, but you can also enjoy nature, pet the goats, row in the canoe , walk on our trails, and get to the closest beach in 20 minutes. You will love it here!
Guests may use the lake. It is enclosed on our property. We will provide life vests. We only have adult-sized life vests. Please take them with you on your row. We have one rowboat and a two-person kayak. Please, no small children or babies out in the lake. We don't have life vests in every size. Please be very responsible and watch your children near the lake. Please, do not use the lake if you don't know how to swim. Please do not go out on the lake after dark. Do not go out if you have been drinking. Understandably, I am very concerned about safety. I do not have a lifeguard on duty, so boating is at your own risk. I have to ask my guests to use extremely good judgement about the use of the lake.
Fishing is allowed, but we insist on catch-and-release. We prefer to keep the fish in the pond. We do not provide fishing gear, but you may bring your own.
It is very important that you bring tick spray for your protection, if you take walks into the woods.
Any fences that you see with 3 wires parallel to the ground and pink and orange ribbons on it is electric! Use caution! Any small children should be made aware of these fences.
You will see chairs by the lake that are tipped over. They are for your use. They are tipped over, because the wind makes them tumble around, so I just tip them over.
We are usually home, but try to be fairly invisible. You may bump into us as we come and go, as this is a farm and we are out and about on the property all day. We get to use the area by the lake all year long, so we try to give our guests a lot of privacy by the lake. However, we ask that you do not entertain or have a party by the lake or in the apartment. This accommodation and our property is meant for our airbnb guests only. We ask that you not allow any friends to spend the night with you.
Let me know if you would like more access to the goats. I can let you walk around with them. Baby goats were born on April 1st. A spray water bottle is necessary for the large goats. I have them. They like to get up close and personal. My goats love cut up apples and cut up carrots! But, feed them through the fence. If you walk into the pasture with food, they will jump up on you, and they are large.
Other things to note
This is VERY important. We have a septic system. No baby wipes, facial wipes, cleaning wipes or sanitary products in the toilet, please. Those items would clog and damage our system. We just had to replace the pump that controls everything. Please, baby our toilet! Even too much toilet paper can be an issue. Thank you.
There is some electric fencing for our goats. Three wires parallel to the ground indicates electric fencing. I will show you where it is.
I do not provide my guests laundry privileges, because my washer and dryer are off my bedroom on our third floor, in our quarters.
There are plenty of towels provided in the apartment. There are no beach towels or beach chairs. I just don't have a large capacity washer/dryer, and cannot do that much laundry between guests.
Please, please keep the doors to the apartment closed. I know it's nice to get extra breezes, but please just use the windows and fans. We have a lot of flies. Maybe it's because the goat barn is nearby. I also see mice outside a lot. So, when you go in and out to set up the patio table, please close the doors behind you.
If you want to walk in the area where I often graze the goats or walk in the woods, you should bring an extra pair of shoes (or boots) that you don't mind getting a little dirty.
Storms come up rather suddenly. Please check the weather forecast and close the windows accordingly.
Bring tick spray.
If you smoke, please do so outside. If you have a question and need us, we'll provide you with all of our numbers.
We have 2 dogs that are gated in the rear and it's important that the gate remain securely shut at all times. The map shows our lake. We would like for you to think about safety at all times while near the lake or on the lake. Please do not go out in the canoe if you are not a good swimmer.
Please, no loud music or parties permitted. We live upstairs. We try to be very quiet for you, as well. There is a whole empty level between our bedroom and yours. Occasionally, you will hear the pitter-patter of little dog feet when I let the dogs out.
No extra guests permitted. No parties. No entertaining here. It is our home.
Please leave the apartment as tidy as possible, as I often have back to back bookings. Also, I would appreciate a note (through airbnb or email) when you have checked out. Then, I know when I can access the room and tidy it up for the next guests.
Please, no candles.
Please close both doors when you go out. The heavy red barn door tends to flap around on a windy day.
Please lock the door when you go out touring in the area. If you are just going to the lake, no need to lock up.
I must have a brief chat with you before booking. A property with a lake is not suitable to all families with young children. We also have some electric fencing that must be pointed out.
I love to meet my guests! I will also respect their privacy. Once we meet and I tell you a few important things, you are more or less on your own. I feel that many of my guests come here to enjoy privacy and I will not bother you, as long as I see that you have what you need.
However, while you are here, feel free to ask about the area, or if you have a question about the apartment. I'm always available by text.
I came to Rhode Island in 2007 after living in Washington DC for 35 years! I am married and my husband and I have spent the past 5 years building our dream house here by the lake and taming the land! It's endless...But, I'm living my dream. I have 5 goats and 2 dogs. I am an artist.
Building the B and B business is also part of a fantasy. Come and share paradise!
