UtupoaUpepo, our new beach tower, is designed as a song of praise for the local ngalawa sailing culture. You sleep on its top floor, cradled from and by a sea breeze, as close to Matemwe's dazzling beach high water mark as you could ever hope to be.

The space

UtupoaUpepo gives you three floors of a romantic tower situated as close to the sea as possible and all the space is yours alone.

Guest access

The tower's quirky bottom floor suggests an underwater experience. If you look up, you will see the hulls of two ngalawa boats floating above you. Here you can have a warm shower after an afternoon swim in the sea or sit quietly at midnight, make yourself a mango smoothie and listen to the reef roaring lowly though the portholes.

Climb the sand-coloured staircase as though you are going up for air and then, Matemwe's glorious beach panorama is before you on the tower's middle level, a resting place with its own bar and music system, and open to the breeze.

On the top floor, the lovers' nest. Up the staircase as you climb, feel mangrove polished hard by mud and salt, until you reach the warm, red cocoon which is your ensuite bedroom on the top floor. The bed itself is pure ngalawa, carved out of a mango tree and bearing still the swells and scars of its recent history. The boat's prow provides storage and the two outriggers make a frame for the window which is all upepo and a view which, as you lie in bed, will surely take your breath away.

We also welcome you to feel at home in our main house where we have a well-stocked library, piano and enjoy sharing meals with our guests.

Interaction with guests

As our guests at Utupoa, we invite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Joyce and I will be around to advise you about transport and tours and anything else you might need to know about the island.

This was my second visit to what has become a home away from home. Everything about this place is really special. The location is excellent (read white sandy beaches, turquoise’s blue waters and pure serenity); try the tower (called Utupoa Upepo) if your budget allows it - set right by the water so you can enjoy lovely views and sound of the ocean; homemade meals made by Tim and Joyce’s staff are highly recommended - dinner time is a great opportunity to relax and mingle with other guests in a homely atmosphere; But what really sets this place apart are the hosts - a lovely, kind and down to earth but very interesting couple who are a joy to be around (although they are never in your face!).Nothing is ever too much trouble for Tim and Joyce. Thank you both for a wonderful time. Very much looking forward to my next visit!

This is what Airbnb should be like - I have never felt more welcomed and can now see why the reviews are so incredibly positive. Tim and Joyce's tower looks out at the most incredible bit of beach - completely secluded from other tourists. The tower itself is incredible - and beautifully designed. It was such a treat waking up to the view of sea. The middle floor is perfect for chilling in the evening. Truly a very special place and would love to come back one day. In addition to the tower, the communal space is amazing - we spent many hours reading in the courtyard. Finally, the staff are amazing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available to order. We tried a number of different restaurants but none rivalled the food cooked at Tim and Joyce's. Thanks for an incredible 6 days!

Utupoa is a gem! Such a charming place with an amazing staff, quiet beach location, delicious meals enjoyed family-style with other guests (and our wonderful host Tim!) and just a lovely vibe all around. We loved our three nights here - especially our last night in the tower!

As so many of the other reviews indicate on this page, Tim and Joyce's place is remarkable and unforgettable. Their home is clearly the outcome of years of love, family gatherings, and dedication. Everything has personal homespun touches and each room is artfully decorated with unusual artifacts and antiques Tim and Joyce have collected through the years. These personal touches really do make this house feel like a home, and in such a unique way that is unlike anything else available on the island. The tower is definitely the best place to stay on the property-- the room affords the most light and has beautiful direct views of the beach from your backyard, as well as a lovely sitting area and second shower on the second and first floors. It comes with your own sound system and a small minibar too. Stay here and you won't regret it!!

Utupoa is a truly magical paradise! We stayed for 1 night in the incredible Tower and wished we had stayed 1 week. Tim and Joyce were extremely accommodating but also fascinating and inspiring hosts to meet, they have created a truly unique environment to stay in. We spent the night in the Tower which was an unforgettable experience, filled with quirky and beautiful features it was interesting to explore but also clean and comfortable. The surrounding beach area was stunning, quiet and super chilled. We took a snorkeling trip to a nearby island arranged by Tim and Joyce that we would highly recommend. We also joined the evening meal in Tim and Joyce's home which was delicious and a great way to find out more about how this special place was created. We would definitely recommend this place for couples and travelers and would suggest you stay more than 1 night as we wish we had. We will for sure be returning! Thank you Tim & Joyce for an amazing Zanzibar experience!

This stunning guesthouse is eclipsed only by the warmth of Tim and Joyce! We stayed four nights in the tower overlooking the sea for the end of our honeymoon, and there is no higher recommendation we could give for a tranquil and whimsical stay! A bit removed from Zanzibar's main attractions, this is worth any long commute. We loved the community conversations over tasty breakfast and scrumptious dinner with other guests and our hosts. We wish we had another year to spend exploring the many cozy lounging spots in the main house, sailing with locals on Tim's boat, and wading through the lagoon at sunrise. Area Info: Tim and Joyce were able to make arrangements for us with other locals for transport, airport pick up, Stone Town tours, guides, spice farm visit, transport to The Rock restaurant (get reservation weeks in advance online), and a local village tour with a few young men who are eager to introduce you to their families! There are a few restaurants walkable from the beach, the views are spectacular, and the atmosphere cannot be beat. We have traveled the world on Airbnb, and this is our favorite stay yet! We cannot wait to come back to Utupoa! Hugs to Joyce, Tim, Didi the dog, and the Staff! Mark and Moriah

Tim was a pilot in the Middle East when we first came to Zanzibar on a flight he was operating. It was 1992, before electricity, tarmac or cell phone networks. We fell in love with Matemwe and have made it our home. It is a home that we like sharing, and are very happy to welcome guests to experience the fantastic beach, food, hospitality and weather that Zanzibar has to offer.
