UtupoaUpepo, our new beach tower, is designed as a song of praise for the local ngalawa sailing culture. You sleep on its top floor, cradled from and by a sea breeze, as close to Matemwe's dazzling beach high water mark as you could ever hope to be.
UtupoaUpepo gives you three floors of a romantic tower situated as close to the sea as possible and all the space is yours alone.
The tower's quirky bottom floor suggests an underwater experience. If you look up, you will see the hulls of two ngalawa boats floating above you. Here you can have a warm shower after an afternoon swim in the sea or sit quietly at midnight, make yourself a mango smoothie and listen to the reef roaring lowly though the portholes.
Climb the sand-coloured staircase as though you are going up for air and then, Matemwe's glorious beach panorama is before you on the tower's middle level, a resting place with its own bar and music system, and open to the breeze.
On the top floor, the lovers' nest. Up the staircase as you climb, feel mangrove polished hard by mud and salt, until you reach the warm, red cocoon which is your ensuite bedroom on the top floor. The bed itself is pure ngalawa, carved out of a mango tree and bearing still the swells and scars of its recent history. The boat's prow provides storage and the two outriggers make a frame for the window which is all upepo and a view which, as you lie in bed, will surely take your breath away.
We also welcome you to feel at home in our main house where we have a well-stocked library, piano and enjoy sharing meals with our guests.
Interaction with guests
As our guests at Utupoa, we invite you also to use our home as your own and, in particular, to join us for breakfast and any other meals, especially dinner at the famous round table. Joyce and I will be around to advise you about transport and tours and anything else you might need to know about the island.
Tim was a pilot in the Middle East when we first came to Zanzibar on a flight he was operating. It was 1992, before electricity, tarmac or cell phone networks. We fell in love with Matemwe and have made it our home. It is a home that we like sharing, and are very happy to welcome guests to experience the fantastic beach, food, hospitality and weather that Zanzibar has to offer.
