Set in the South Downs National Park, in the idyllic Itchen valley, this two bedroom, newly renovated self contained cottage is a perfect rural retreat or an excellent base for exploring the south of England. Close to Winchester, one hour from London

The space

This is a special place to stay with underfloor heating, gorgeous antiques and finest quality bedding.

It is a newly converted cottage with a kitchen leading on to a terrace which overlooks the lawned courtyard and countryside beyond. Also downstairs there is a large sitting room with a wood burner and a bathroom which has a walk in shower. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one double and a single. In the winter months this is a cosy place to stay with the woodburner and underfloor heating. The cottage is in Hampshire countryside, 1/4 mile from some of the best fishing on the River Itchen and Avington golf course is also nearby. From the cottage you can walk to The Bush Inn which has a renowned restaurant.

You can cook in the cottage, walk to the pub for an excellent meal, drive 3 miles to the busy market town Alresford with good restaurants, cafe's and pubs or 20 minutes to the cathedral city of Winchester with the Christmas market and a wide variety of restaurants from the Michelin starred Black Rat to Rick Steins and River Cottage.
Breakfast is supplied in the cottage.

The beauty of this location is that you can shut off for a few days and enjoy the peace of the South Downs National Park or you can use it as a base to explore the south of England. It takes 15 minutes to get to major roads or a main line station which can take you to London, Oxford and Bath as well as the coastline of southern England.

Jane was very responsive and helpful in everything that we needed. Even if you do not have a car, a taxi isn't that far away. We had a few local foods that were awaiting us as well.

This is a lovely place to stay for anyone visiting the area. Don’t be fooled by the relative proximity to a motorway and Winchester - this is a really quiet corner of the world. It is particularly good for people with children and/or dogs - the large but secure front garden was a big hit with our dog! Jane is a great host, and there were some much-appreciated little touches, like fresh croissants, to welcome us when we got there. Overall a great place to stay and we will look forward to going back! Winchester is ten minutes away, Alresford even closer and very nice, and there’s lots to explore in the area.

Just what we needed. Working away this was near to our shoot for the week and was the perfect base. Jane is lovely and at hand if you need anything. Lovely log burner. Would be perfect for a secluded get a way too No phone signal which is normal for this area, wifi worked perfectly if you do feel the need to be in touch with the outside world!

We visited for a long weekend stay and upon arrival greeted and shown around by Max and Jane. We were made to feel very welcome and shown around. Lovely warm touches of provisions such as tea, coffee and essentials were provided. A pleasant surprise. The cottage is stylish, quaint and eclectic in furnishings. Bathroom was a fantastic size with a lovely shower, bedrooms were more than adequate for our needs, kitchen had ample facilities and appliances for a short stay. The lounge was our favourite part. Filled with beautiful furnishings, a vast array of reading material and a lovely warm cosy feel with the lamp lights. Outside we had access to a gated lawn area which was perfect for our large dog to play and run around in. Situated in Avington we were in an ideal location to visit family in Winchester and Ovington. Nearby walks and pubs all dog friendly which was perfect. The location of this Rural Retreat is set in spectacular countryside. So quiet and tranquil it made our stay an absolute delight and we would thoroughly recommend to all.

We were delighted to return to this lovely, peaceful and interestingly decorated cottage. We loved our second visit. A few elements are starting to look a bit tired which is a small shame and we left a private note with the details.

Response from Jane:
Thank you Lisa for pointing out the buckling on the bathroom floor. We have already booked in a builder to relay the floor in October. I hope to see you again soon.
