Solar powered home for couple or family of 4 (upstairs apt, hosts live downstairs). Easy access to Bay Shore Marina & Ferry to Fire Islands & Long Island's world famous beaches. Easy access to Manhattan & NYC by train. 1 hr by car to the wineries & Hamptons (without $$$)

The space

Our Net-Zero Energy home is an environmentalist's delight. Featured on several media outlets including NBC, we offer the privacy of the entire second floor with 3 rooms and 1 bathroom. Perfect for a couple or a family of 4.
Guests have the privacy of the entire upstairs floor with three rooms that we call the British Room, the Indian Room and the Child room (see photos), as fitting to their decor! The British room is ideal for couples / parents as it comes with a door that can be closed, the Indian room has a beaded curtain & has a sofa that can be used as a sitting area or pulled out to sleep, the child room has a twin bed & its decor is fit for a child, even though it will also sleep an adult who is young at heart! The bathroom comes with a large walk-in shower for two people, heated floor, heated towel rack and a European style bidet toilet.
Every single feature, furniture, accessory has been sourced sustainably, and made in USA or hand-crafted in India. The linens and towels are organic and every effort has been put to make the home environmentally friendly.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire upstairs floor with the three rooms and the bathroom. The hosts live on the first floor & appreciate their own privacy & space as much as their guests. The apartment upstairs has been sound proofed well, so the noises from the two floors do not carry into each other, giving both the hosts and the guests their own true space. The guests are welcome to make occasional use of the kitchen to make breakfast if they like & use the kitchen island/chairs for their breakfast. A selection of tea/ coffee/ drinks would be provided by the hosts. The guests are also welcome to spend time in the garden, grape-vine covered gazebo & the above-ground pool!

Interaction with guests

We are a couple; a Brit and an Indian, who love to meet new people, share new perspectives and make new friends.

Other things to note

We have a Net-Zero Energy home. This means that we generate all our energy needs ourselves. We have four solar systems, Geo thermal heating, quadruple glazed windows, heavy insulation in walls, cork floor, non VOC paints and you name it! Our house has been featured in various local print, radio and TV news outlets and also showcased by NBC during their green week. We participate in the national Solar Tour Day Event as well as various other sustainable events to help learn & educate people about how to live an eco-conscious & sustainable life.

We like guests who respect our home & treat it as they would treat theirs. If you use the kitchen, please clean the counter and load the dishes in the dishwasher (but do not run the dishwasher until full to save energy). In line with our desire to live an eco-conscious life, we separate all trash into paper, plastic, metal, trash and compost - there are separate bins for each. A laundry basket is provided to the guests in the bathroom, so they can drop the used towels in it at the end of their stay. If guests want to use the laundry, we can certainly help them with it, but beware our dryer is a solar powered washing line out in the garden, so you may not have your clothes dry & ready in a hurry!
If you park in our driveway, leave the keys on the key-rack next to the front door, so we can move your car if needed.
No smoking. Pets upon approval. Pool use not guaranteed. Also, any children in the pool must be supervised by an adult at all times.
At check-out, please leave used towels in the laundry hamper in the bathroom and leave the house key on key rack.

The house is easy to find right off Sunrise Hwy at the exit for Bay Shore. Swati met us at the front door entrance which is the one designated for guest use. She had a nice selection of tea available anytime on the dining room table and we had access to the living room and kitchen. The bedrooms were clean and well appointed. I was lucky to draw the "India room" which I found to be like a sanctuary behind the beaded curtain (great sleep!). The other guests in our party were pleased with their quarters as well. The bathroom was really well done. There's a large beautifully tiled shower with multiple shower heads and a unique bowl style sink. A humidity sensor turns on the exhaust fan automatically (no methane sensor as far as I could tell, but there was a manual overide for that :-). Swati put out a nice breakfast with cereal, muffins and access to the top shelf of the fridge in case we wanted to make eggs and toast. Mark shared a bit of Marmite as well (with proper warning for non-Brit newbies). A very nice stay, I would certainly return to this property if I were back in the area.

Swati and Mark were ideal hosts. We stayed with them for the weekend and used the ferry to make day trips to Fire Island. Swati and Mark were warm, flexible, considerate and the very definition of hospitable. Their space - the second floor of their home - is well-maintained, spacious and comfortable. There's also any number of amenities, from a pool and large gazebo in their garden, to a wonderful large shower in the bathroom. Swati and Mark went above and beyond as hosts. They spontaneously offered up a number of different treats - but the real treat was chatting with them and getting to know them. We often bumped into them in the kitchen, for example, and inevitably had a long, enjoyable conversation. You will need a car or Lyft to get around - Lyft worked well for us. Would recommend!

This is a great place to stay for a number of reasons. The location is excellent--at the end of a dead end street in a quiet neighborhood. It's also centrally situated: short drive to the LIRR Bay Shore train station, ferries to Fire Island and a revitalized Main St., with its nice selection of good restaurants. Bay Shore now has excellent Lyft service (all my rides were less than $10 and I never had to wait more than 10 min), and many locations are easily walkable. The house itself is quite comfortable, clean and nicely decorated (with a great bathroom featuring one of the best showers I've ever had--not kidding). But the best feature of all is the hospitality; Mark and Swati are delightful hosts--friendly, bright, relaxed and very attentive to their guests. Swati is a gem, and a delightful conversationalist. Also worth noting is that you get the entire top floor of the house for a reasonable price, so if you are traveling with your family it becomes a real bargain. Last but not least, Swati provides everything you need to make yourself a full breakfast, or just a quick snack if you prefer, another added value. You get the picture by now: if you need a place to stay in Bay Shore, don't hesitate--book it now!

Previous to this, all of my airbnb stays I have had the entire house so I was a bit apprehensive with what to expect sharing a home. Not to worry, Swati and Mark quickly adapt to their occupants and will offer privacy or spirited conversations, whichever you prefer. I was in the area teaching a class on energy efficiency and they volunteered their home for us to use as one of our field sites the last day of our class. Mark did extraordinary work making sure we had all of the pertinent information for their Net Zero Home. If you have the time and the interest Mark will take the time to explain and show you the highlights of their place. No need to re-mention all of the positive attributes in previous reviews, their are all truth. Hotels are ok, a stay at Swati's and Mark's is an experience, and a good one at that! Thanks for the good week.

Swati and Mark were such great hosts! They truly welcome you into their space, simultaneously making you feel at home and giving you your privacy. The home itself is lovely and comfortable and the backyard is so enjoyable! The location is ideal, only 15 mins walk to the train station and 30 mins walk to the Fire Island Ferries (or a really quick Uber!) Will definitely stay here again!
