Room in a townhouse

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Enjoy a stylish, comfortable and welcoming experience for up to two adults, within the historic centre of Barnard Castle.

Gordon House is a sympathetically restored Victorian townhouse dating back to 1830 with wonderful character features and all mod cons. We are only a stroll away from the beautiful Bowes Museum and the Castle itself and all that Barnard Castle has to offer including the antiques quarter, niche individual shops, coffee shops, great restaurants, cosy pubs and wonderful walks.

The space
The room is a charming, large double room with character, located on the ground floor to the front of the house for easy access. It is decorated to a high standard with a contemporary feel and luxury touches, making it a little retreat. It has stylish shutters, a modern double canopy bed with luxurious bedding, modern heating system with individual controls and a beautiful oak floor. It has a modern en-suite with a large shower, cosy underfloor heating and heated towel rail with luxury toiletries for you to use and fluffy towels.

Enjoy your welcome pack filled with treats including tea and coffee bags, sugar, milk, bottled water, cereal bars, fruit and biscuits. You can listen to your favourite music via the Bluetooth speaker, watch TV with a provided Amazon Firestick, where you can access your Netflix and Amazon Prime account and fast wi-fi. There are books and board games available with a table area for workspace or dining. Two comfortable chairs are available with a convenient mains floor socket for a laptop. It really is a lovely place to relax.

Guest access
We are located three doors along from The Bowes Museum.

The room is on the ground floor, the first room off the hallway. There are no stairs that you need to navigate. I like to welcome my guests in person, however I also offer a self check-in, should you prefer this. Full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.

There is free on street parking located just outside of the house.

During your stay
I am available at all times and may answer queries in person, by email or text.

If you have any questions or would like recommendations for a taxi, restaurants, pubs, walks or places to visit, please do not hesitate to ask me and I will happily advise.

On check out, please leave the key on the table and leave the bedroom door open. If you wish to say 'bye' please give me a shout up the stairs or text and I will happily pop down to see you. If you are leaving early or would prefer to discreetly leave, that is totally fine too :)

Other things to note
Not suitable for children.

Neighbourhood highlights

Gordon House is in Newgate, an historic part of Barnard Castle, just a stroll away from the beautiful grand architecture of the famous Bowes Museum, built in the style of a French Chateau. The Museum holds national and international collections including costumes, paintings, french furniture, sculptures, ceramics and of course the famous and rare ‘Silver Swan’ automaton. The Castle ruins are just a few minutes walk from the house.

There is so much to enjoy. You can enjoy browsing the antiques quarter, the niche independent shops, second-hand books, art, designer chocolates, vintage items, artisan bakeries, local crafts as well as enjoying a gelato ice-cream or a barista coffee. You can dine in some fine restaurants, see a show at The Witham theatre, browse the local Wednesday weekly market or the Farmers market on the first Saturday of every month. You can also enjoy a riverside walk along the River Tees, Deepdale Nature Reserve, Flatts Wood or hike along the many hiking trails such as Teesdale Way and Pennine Way. Leaflets are provided in your room.
