Our place is perfect for two adults (no children, sorry) to get away. We are pet friendly with certain limitations, however (read House Rules below. Our off-the-grid cabin is great for a private, romantic weekend, a contemplative retreat or base camp for adventures around Hood Canal and the Olympic Peninsula. There are good restaurants nearby with indoor and outdoor dining and take out service. We have a stunning view of Hood Canal and the Olympics right from your deck.

The space
A perfect get-a-way for two adults (no children or pets, sorry) in a small cottage with water and mountain views from the deck. This is a very small private space with everything you need to be comfortable, and is really only appropriate for two adults. Note that there is a concrete sidewalk and stepping pads on a slope that may be difficult for some guests (seniors and anyone with limited mobility). Fold out double bed, kitchenette, shower and flush toilet. However, be informed that because of the small space there is no sink in the bathroom; the sink in the kitchenette is adequate and has an extendable two sided mirror for shaving, make-up, etc. Great restaurants, hiking, kayaking and outdoor activities abound. BBQ, beach access and WiFi. There's a lot to do locally, but if rest and quiet relaxation are what you need, this is also the place.

There is room for a small (25 pounds or less), well behaved dog. We love having dogs and dogs love our place! Since our cabin is very small we ask that any dogs staying with you must be 25 pounds or less...no exceptions. Further, we do have some limitations and rules we expect to be followed:

1. Your dog must be house broken.
2. Your dog must be friendly toward other dogs, small children and adults.
3. Your pet is not allowed on the fold out bed when it is folded up.
4. Dogs are not allowed to sleep with you in the fold out bed.
5. You may not wash your pet in the shower.
6. Your dog must be crate or dog bed trained if you leave it alone.

Please read the House Rules for additional details.

As mentioned above, we have a stunning view of Hood Canal and the Olympic mountains right from your deck (and by the way, if you book our place for the Fourth of July you will have a bird's eye view of the annual Alderbrook fireworks show - it's spectacular). Look for pictures in our listing photos. Both the view and fireworks are unmatched!!

The cabin is separated from the main house, set in a corner of the property with views of the water and mountains. It is small and semi-private (we sometimes enjoy our patio outside that is about 50 feet away from the cabin deck). Enjoying the deck in front is very pleasant at any time of day. Enjoy your coffee in the morning or a libation in the afternoon.

Access is from the parking area at the top of the property through our yard, past a small log play house, our vegetable garden and the main house.

Hand built in the 1930's by my grandparents, the cottage reminds one of a "Hobbit" house (people six feet tall and up will have to watch not to bump their heads on entry and exit) and has been used by many guests, family and visitors over the years. It has been moved at least three times from its original location. There is history here!

It has been completely remodeled and is clean, comfortable and up-to-date in all respects. You will find all the conveniences of home in a cozy cottage.

We have one very friendly dog on the property, Luna (see photos), my sister's 7 year old Flat Coat Retriever, who will excitedly greet you warmly. She is very friendly, may bark, but will not bite. If she pesters you too much (she loves new company) feel free to shoo her away or tell her to go home. We don't let her in the cabin and ask that you not do so, either.

You have free Guest WiFi with a dedicated password.

Where you’ll be

Union, Washington, United States

Hood Canal is a rural, resort area with a wide variety of housing. Water sports, fishing, crabbing and shrimping dominate the summer months with hunting, fishing and mushrooming occupying fall through spring. A full service marina in Union has moorage and fuel.

There is one fine restaurant and a deli within walking distance, a family run Mexican restaurant two miles away, and a convenience store with groceries and gasoline about a mile away. The Union Country Store across the street from the Mexican restaurant in Union has wonderful pre-cooked food, a good selection of wines and grocery items and famous Olympic Mountain ice cream...unfortunately, it is only open during the summer months. The Union City Market is a high end gift and grocery shop next to the Mexican restaurant also with a great selection of wine and food; it also boasts a unique pop-up restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, fire pit and wonderful views of Hood Canal and the Olympic mountains. The Cameo is a boutique gift shop just down the street with wonderful resort wear, jewelry and wine store. Kerry's Collectibles is antique and collectible store in Union, and completes the venue. Check out our Guide Book for more details on each of these businesses.

Shelton and Belfair are only 25 minutes away and have all the necessary shopping (Fred Meyer, QFC, Rite-Aid, Safeway, Walmart, etc.).

We have a small oyster farm on our beach and would love to provide a tour if time and tides allow. Please check with us when you arrive if you are interested. Fishing is possible, but is catch and release only except for hatchery salmon. A recreational license is required for fishing and harvesting oysters (URL HIDDEN) Minimum oyster size is 2½" measured across longest distance of shell and they must be shucked on the beach.

It is one hour to Olympic National Park or the ferry to Seattle. Two hours to the Pacific Ocean. Sunset views. Great golf courses nearby.

Visit the websites for masoncountytourism, visitkitsap and experiencewa for information on our area. Use this property as a starting point to visit the Olympic Peninsula and Greater Pacific Northwest.

Ekaterini (Katerina) and I have been happily married for over twenty years, brought together as soul-mates in the second half of our lives. Katerina was born and raised in Athens, Greece and Daniel is a third generation American from immigrant grandparents (Norway and Sweden). Together we have four adult children and three grandchildren. Thankfully, all except our grandchildren are employed and starting families of their own.

We moved to Daniel's family summer home on Hood Canal in 2010 when he retired from Weyerhaeuser Company after 33 years. Katerina is a retired dental assistant of 30 years. Now we are both semi-retired and operate a small, family run oyster farm supplying fresh oysters to three local restaurants and a retail market.

We spend most of our time at home cooking, entertaining, playing games, gardening, walking & hiking, kayaking and visiting with our next door neighbor (Daniel's sister) and friends. We like streaming movies, reading, internet surfing and wine tasting.

We also love to travel, and have been to Greece and the Greek Islands many times to visit Kathy's family and friends. We've also traveled around Europe a bit, on a Viking River Cruise down the Danube, a Rick Steves tour through Italy and independent travel to Norway, the Balkans, Mexico and North America. We find travel to be a wonderful, life enriching experience where the connection to other people and cultures make us appreciate life more.

We are friendly, open, honest and kind people. As a guest, we are quiet, clean and respectful of the host's space and privacy. As a host, we are dedicated to providing guests with a great experience in a clean, comfortable, unique cabin.

Five things we can't live without:
1. Each other
2. Wine
3. Good friends
4. Good food
5. Good times
