Experience a breathtaking and charming Rhine panorama above the slate cladded roofs of an medieval town! The sun-dappeled former slate mine ist situated at the rocks underneath Castle Gutenfels, directly at the hiking trail "Rheinsteig". The property is part of the Unesco world heritage and a wildlife sanctuary. Enjoy the terrace, shaded with a vine bower, the mysterious cave entrance of the mine, the traditional herb garden, the secluded relaxing green and the bird´s eye view.

The space

The guest house offers three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms (with shower and two seperate toilets), a completely equiped kitchen, a dining and living room , a terrace with a vine pergola, a herb garden and a lawn with mediterranean trees as almond, figs and peaches. The lawn is an ideal place for sunbathing, as it is the only and the highest garden level in the neighbourhood and you can not be seen from underneath. But you will have a great view on the river! One large sleeping room is in the studio under the roof and can be used as a family or group room by up to four persons (2 double beds). The other sleeping rooms offer one double bed each. A crib and a babies high chair are available. The property has been a slate-mine until 1869. The garden lies on the 'plane' spoil heap of the mine. Because of this the property is called 'The Plon' by the Kaubians. (From the garden it is possible to visit the adit mouth but ist is not allowed by minimg authorities to climb deeper into the rock.) For 150 years the house was owned by the local driggist family. They planted the herb garden with serveral sorts of thyme, rosemary, sage and much more species. The herbs can be taken by the guests for cooking and teas.

Guest access

From the central 'Zollplatz' a foot path (between the youth hostel and 'Hotel zum Turm') leads to the 'Schlossweg', a very short way of only 25 meters. As you reach the ' Schlossweg' you turn left and after 15 meters you will reach the house. There is a gate between the garden walls and and a stair leads to the garden level and the entrance underneath the pergola.

Interaction with guests

Please ask you if have questions or if need some advices for your journy! You can call me or send a sms or mail any time. I have written a personal guide to the middle rhine valley and a small manual for the house. I can send it as a pdf in before and you will aslo find the printed version on the kitchen table.

Other things to note

A lot of rural regions in Europe Kaub experiences an enormous decline in population. Because of its beautiful scenery, the masses of historic monuments, wildlife sancturies and its fascinating history Kaub and the neighbourhood are very attractiv destinations. Since centuries Kaub lived from shipping, pilot's business and slate mining. Today tourism is the most important economic focus. Renting holiday houses and apartments is a very welcomed opportunity to bring some welfare directly to the region' s inhabitants. Kaub is looking forward to meet its guests - you will recognize this directly! Despite the town counts only 800 people it is very lively and communicating;-) A lot of neighbours are engaged in theater festival, carnival parade, Nikolaus market, the choire, the biking day 'Tal Total' or the current swimming school 'Cubalido'. There we celebrate the summer beach live on the river's island. The Kaubians are very cosmopolitan and tolarant. Gays, lesbian and people of all colors and religion are warmly welcomed.

We found Dirk's place to be something quite special. Beautiful views from virtually every room. We admired & enjoyed his sense of style & skill with design: the interior design & artefacts are really well thought through in a creative way. The house is well equipped, spacious, comfortable ... we had a great stay. Some pointers for other travellers: - the house is I guess the equivalent of an 8 or 10 storey climb up stairs & pathways from the place you park your car. It's worth it in my opinion to obtain the views & privacy, but you do have to be prepared to haul your luggage. - we didn't find English to be spoken in the restaurants or shops we went to. But locals were accommodating and we could get by without it.

Response from Dirk:
Thank you very much for this excellent recommendation. The way up to look over all the roofs of all the neighborhood houses (in general 3 floors) is about the 4 th floor - not so dramatic ;-)

What an AMAZING stay - Dirk's place was a piece of paradise along the Rhine. A bit of a hike from where you can park to the flat, but this affords you magnificent views and lovely breeze. The garden was a delightful place to have a drink and short walk to a local market, bakery and several restaurants. On our last night there, we were surprised by a fireworks display from directly in front of the flat - not sure who or what was celebrated but we throughly enjoyed it. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, maybe next time we would plan to have time for hiking.

The apartment is beautifully done, very stylish with a cute garden and great views onto the Rhine. We stayed with our toddler daughter and it was all fine for her. We arrived much later than planned due to traffic but that was managed very nicely by Dirk. Kaub is a very peaceful village, a great place to relax and explore more of the area from.

We absolutely loved staying at Dirk's house in Kaub! We stayed there with a large group including 2 children and it was perfect for us. The house is very spacious and the garden and patio are incredible. We enjoyed many bottles of wine while relaxing on the patio! It is a bit of a climb to get to the house, but well worth it for us. Kaub is situated in a beautiful area of the Rhine and is convenient to many attractions. We took advantage of the river cruise boats that dock in Kaub as well as the ferry in Kaub. Everything does close early in the small town and things were frequently closed during the week and in the middle of the day, so you need to plan accordingly. Dirk was a wonderful host. He provided lots of suggestions on things to do during our stay as well as an amazing guide book for the area. I would highly recommend staying here!

We were the first party to stay at Dirk's slate mine apartment. We were 6 adults with 2 small children (2&5 yrs old). There are 3 bedrooms with the large one on the second level just under the roof. As the parents of the young kids we stayed on the roof level where we had a great view of the Rhein through the many windows. There is also a beautiful garden with great views over the city and the warm afternoon sun (if you're lucky to be here on a sunny weekend in Spring). The apt is decorated in very good taste with period furniture, original art pieces, and interesting books. We had two large family dinners there and found everything we needed to cook, prepare, and have a nice meal. Dirk even provided some local specialties for us to enjoy. Dirk was super communicative and helpful from the very beginning, providing us with his own guide to the region in both german and english, as well as accommodating our arrival time and providing us with a kid bed and high chair. I must say that the place may not be suitable for those who find it difficult to negotiate some stairs as you do have to get your stuff a little ways up from the where you drop your bags from the car and then have to go up a set of stairs. You can always ask Dirk for more details if this would be a concern. All in all, we had a great stay at Dirk's place in Kaub. The town is small and friendly with numerous dining and snacking options. The ferry is right there and with Dirk's place you have your base away from home. Thanks!

Lieben Dank Dirk!
