The House of Returns; A sanctuary for you and all those who have come before
The Finca (Farm) is located on the outskirts of Esporles, an area characterised by the surrounding Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and a rich sense of Mallorquin village life, all within close proximity to some of the most beautiful beaches and areas on the island. We look forward to welcoming you through our gravel forest road to the house itself, located atop a high plateau in the heart of a valley, boasting panoramic views of both the farmland below and of the mountains which bear down on all sides of the finca.
Ca’n Torna as it stands today was built in the 14th century and has been a part of the family since the 16th century. Parts of the house feature antiquities in design from the Romans and Arabs, indicating that the finca has been inhabited and the land cultivated for over 2000 years. Built entirely out of stone with many of the traditional methods used through ages still visible in different parts of the house. One feels as though they might have been transported back in time upon first making their way through our open doors; with high ceilings and pronounced wooden beams throughout, to the winding staircases, wooden fixtures and stone finishing’s which characterise the rooms.
Notable historic features within the house itself include; The stone cellar, with giant olive oil vats separated by a Roman wall, accompanied by a hollowed out olive branch used for piping, the wooden meat hooks which are still used for curing traditional Mallorquin Sobrasada and other delicacies. The central courtyard with its 19th century sundial leading into the kitchen with its prominent wooden beams and a dining table made from a single piece of oak over 8 metres long.
The part of the house which we now offer to guests was once the workers accommodation on the finca, and as such is designed as much for function within the context of its use as a farm house as for its place as a home. While we have made some changes to the house, like the welcome addition of the swimming pool for example, we have made a great effort to maintain the many of the most traditional aspects to the property and have sought to keep as much of its rustic feel intact as possible while creating a comfortable and immersive living environment.
