It's a blue house... ♫

JohannesRating, 5 stars1 month ago
This was my second visit at Anne Marie's place (this time with my partner) and it was another unforgettable visit. Anne Marie is a lovely hostess who is extremely helpful in many ways. And het place is a lovely house, super clean. And it has a gorgeous garden to walk around in or just sit there read a book and or just listen to the silence. I recommend who happens to pass by here, grab the chance of an unforgettable stay. Added bonus, only about 4 km from the main motorway.

A big thank you to Olivier and Simon for their extremely pleasant communication and availability, as well as for the cold drinks that were waiting for us and the delicious cookies! The house is just beautiful in a cocoon of nature! We'll be happy to go back.

Country cottage, 65 m2

I spent two months this summer at Marie-Claudes accommodation. It is a reasonably spacious, converted building, large enough for two adults and two young children. I was looking for a quiet place where I could study for a few weeks. While it is quite basic, it has everything necessary for stays of several months and is good value for money. However if you are tall, be aware that there are some low hanging beams on the first floor. It took me a few days to get used to this. The internet connection can be unstable and while fine for general surfing, it is not adequate for Zoom or voip. In the summer months there is plenty of space to sit outside and you can help yourself to fresh figs from the fig trees. Towards mid-September it did start to feel slightly cold indoors so my preference for stays would be spring and high summer. The village of Prailles is an ideal base to explore the surrounding area, which has many sites of historic interest related to French Protestantism and appears not to be on the traditional tourist trail. There is also a Benedictine Monastery around half an hour walk away which I understand offers religious retreats. While the countryside cannot be described as beautiful (known as “bocage” in French), it can be very attractive in the evenings as the sun sets to the west. I found it excellent for photography. There is a lot of wildlife. I often saw many deer and it would be great for birding. I noticed there were opportunities for horse-riding with private stables within walking distance. The summer climate is pleasant. It is hot but not baking. It did not rain much though the land is not parched. The surrounding area is quite undulating so ideal for gentle walking or cycling. And the local farmers don’t seem to mind ramblers walking the many paths through the fields. About 45 minutes away by foot is Lac du Lambon which is very scenic and attracts many anglers. To get the most out of your stay, a car is necessary as Prailles is quite isolated. It however does have a shop to cover your basic grocery needs. Otherwise St Maixent is the main town for shopping. Marie-Claude is an excellent host. She and her husband are friendly and helpful, ready to deal with any requests. She is a retired English teacher - very good for those like me whose school French is rather rusty. I did not rent a car as I spent most of my time studying books and Marie Claude was happy to oblige by taking me to St Maixent occasionally to do a big shop.

The cottage is very nice, nicely decorated and well equipped. It is ideal for family moments, many games are available. Valérie and Dominique are very friendly, welcoming hosts. We were able to see their operation and had a pleasant discussion with them.
