Make a Celebration Ring
We will begin with a peek in the Gallery, featuring jewelry handcrafted by US artisans, and a tour of our Studio School. I will also share some history of our 1890 Victorian-era building. In the workshop, you will use steel letter stamps and a hammer to impress words of your choice onto sterling silver strips. Then, you will form the strip into a circle and solder it together (with help). Finally, oxidize (blacken) the ring, and polish to your desired finish. We limit the workshop to four students to guarantee lots of personal instruction, as well as the opportunity to get to know your classmates. Other things to note Unfortunately, our Victorian-era building is not fully accessible to the handicapped.

Discover the musical heritage of U Street --aka Black Broadway-- from jazz to hip hop to punk to go go. Walk the streets & back alleys and learn how murals, theatres, music venues, and memorials embrace the history of this amazing neighborhood. Along the way, we'll listen to a diverse playlist that will match up with the murals and venues. Other things to note: This tour ends at the intersection of 13th & U NW, 8 blocks from the starting point. White House with former Kennedy staffer
This is a walking and history tour that walks the complete outside circumference of the gated portion of the White House. Prior to 09/11, as a former White House staffer, I could simply show my ID and take visitors in for a tour. That perk evaporated on 09/12/2001, and inside tours must be requested through a member of Congress. An external, walking tour is the next best thing to a tour inside, with my sharing features of major rooms in the White House, the West Wing, and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where my office was when I worked at the White House. In addition to the history of the building and stories about some of its occupants, you get the perspective of a former White House staffer who worked for two US presidents and on the campaigns of two candidates who did not win the presidency. I have met every president who has served during my lifetime, from FDR through the current president. The meet place is outside the White House Visitor Center, on Pennsylvania Avenue, between 14th and 15th Streets, NW. The walk begins by passing through the recently dedicated National World War I Memorial, and proceeds past the Sherman Monument to the Ellipse on the side of the White House, with stories, photographs, and opportunities for questions. Continuing toward the official front of the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we pass the first headquarters of the America
Tour with a White House writer
We'll tour Lafayette Square, the historic and scenic park next to the White House, and the surrounding neighborhood. The Nov. 9 tour will focus on the military history of the White House area & the National Mall. With an ex-White House writer, and author of books on U.S. politics and history! The area is jammed with intriguing buildings, statues, and memories of famous persons and events. A good idea of our tours can be found here: https://www.meetup.com/Lafayette-Sq-Tours-of-Scandal-Assassination-Spies-Meetup/ Other things to note MEET at the John Paul Jones statues, at 17th St., S.W., DC, just southwest of the World War II Memorial.

Your guide to Washington

What do locals do in Washington DC?

Washington, DC is an extremely walkable city, and many locals skip the Metro and ride shares so they can enjoy the storied streets by foot. Hill East (part of Capitol Hill) is a family-friendly neighborhood that makes for a low-key stroll or bike ride to enjoy charming homes; meanwhile those looking for a more lively outing head to U Street (also known as Black Broadway for its impressive African American arts and culture scene) and H Street NE for the arts and some of the best food in the city. In-the-know residents of the capital city of the United States head to the museums after hours, when the crowds have dissipated.

What are the best ways to see Washington monuments?

Join Washington insiders at the National Mall

What better way to learn about the National Mall favorites such as the White House than with the people who had access to presidents and their staff? Tour the perimeter of the White House to hear entertaining stories in places like Lafayette Square from political insiders.

Go on food tours

Walk the beautiful Potomac River, see parts of the Georgetown University campus, pass by historic churches and homes — and top it off with coffee and donuts. Explore Washington’s African American food, art, and music on a neighborhood tour. Taste a sampling of locally owned restaurants in Old Town. For those who want hands-on history, master French macarons, Puerto Rican dishes, and Italian cookies, among other goods, with local chefs during cooking classes.

Kayak to the National Arboretum

One way to avoid the crowds of walking tours: take a kayak instead. On a kayak tour, a local expert shares stories about the Anacostia neighborhood and its surroundings, including the story of the Peace Tree, which survived the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, and was later gifted to the Arboretum.
