The Spare Room

Why locals recommend it

Spare Room has a clubby Art Deco vibe, with a two-lane bowling alley you can reserve in advance by the hour (look for the secret photo booth behind the rental shoes!). There’s also a headmistress of gaming. They have Connect Four, Monopoly, Jenga, Mancala—classy wood-trimmed versions, not that plastic stark blue and yellow stuff. I get a rum cocktail or punch bowl. Punch bowls are usually $250, $300. Here they’re like $100, which is a great deal when you share it with 8 buddies. The bartender Yael Vengroff does tiki right; she layers in bitter and citrus notes with rum and hand-made syrups so there’s depth. It’s not that overly sticky tiki.

Play a handcrafted board game while you wait for a turn on the vintage bowling lanes, or simply grab a drink at the elegant bar. Hidden within the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, The Spare Room combines games with drinks for a picture perfect evening.
