Parks & Nature

The former Royal Garden was commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 & used to accomodate a wide variety of plants & animals. It has a romantic and nostalgic atmosphere and even though it has seen more glorious days you can still lose yourself in the scenic paths & feel a bit of the neoclassic Athens of the 19th & 20th century. The lush and diverse vegetation, the fountains, the hidden pavilions and the scattered antiquities make the National Garden the perfect place for a stroll especially in summer during the hottest hours of the day. There is a beautiful small cafe inside the garden which you should definitely visit for a coffee, even though it is a bit expensive.

This park was created in 1908 in the Pagrati neighborhood, when locals planted a large section of land with pine trees. In 1936 the area was allocated to the Municipality of Athens, which continued planting the area with a wide variety of trees, bushes and other types of Mediterranean flora. The park was once home to a small zoo and a theatre with free performances. Today, the municipality is in charge of the park’s myriad recreational activities. Park entrances are located on Eftyxidou Street and at the junction of Eftyxidou and Spyrou Merkouri Streets.

The highest point of Athens with a panoramic 360 view. On top of the hill, there is a small chapel dedicated to Saint George and it was built just before the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire, also there is a nice restaurant! It can get very windy up there so be careful not to fall somewhere on the cliffs! There are two ways to get here - on foot. It is not too much walk. 2nd way is by something like a tram-lift. Around 5 euro for a short ride.

Variety of dishes, meals for every taste. Many salads to choose, many burgers to taste, including having the chance to make your own flavors. Fast serving, offers delivery and takeaway. Great decoration, very comfortable to eat there. Some of the staff aren't very friendly but it didn't bother me so much! Burgers, salads, spaghetti, sandwiches, nuggets, potatoes and desserts of choice.

Hidden gem. The "healthy side" of pizza, pasta & more! They use quality ingredients and good olive oil which makes a difference among others. One of the first non-fast-food burger joints in Athens. You can order, if you live close by, or go early and hope you'll get one of the few tables, outside the restaurant, on the sidewalk. The service is rather slow, and the prices could be a little lower, but it's the general vibe of the place that makes it a good choice for a summer evening.

A charming, older style restaurant situated in the wealthy area of Athens. The most prompt and delicious food served in the full 'silver service' style with mouth-watering appetizers and a varied range of delicious main courses. The entertainment was amazing with a pianist with a diverse choice of songs, accompanied by a singer for many well known international numbers. Later for the Greek audience, a reputable singer and her accompanist entertained the late crowd. A must visit the restaurant to add to your list when visiting Athens at any time of the year.

The architecture, content, presentation and staff engagement were all very good for our visit this afternoon. Definitely would recommend spending a couple of hours. The price right too at 5€ each. The content, lighting and signage explaining the exhibits was very good. It is a comfortable space to navigate and we were able get good views of the exhibits. We visited the Acroplis in the morning and did the Museum in the afternoon. For me that was great and I feel I learned a great deal at the Museum.

A big former brewery now Athens' gallery of contemporary art, mostly Greek artists. Worth a visit for the Janine Antoni piece alone which is amazing. A refreshing change from the usual tourist diet of yet more ancient artifacts poorly displayed. The Museum has free WiFi and a good free app with written and audio guides of many of the pieces on display. The "ten highlights" quick tour is enjoyable and thought-provoking - recommended. Note that reopening in March 2020 entry is free for the month, but not all the exhibits are open, and the cafe and restaurant are closed. There is a bag check for security. There is a nice view of the Acropolis and Philopappos Hill from the terrace. There are some very good cafes and sweet cake/confectionery shops on the street opposite.

This is a really fun, colorful and busy area. Lots of shopping options. It's actually a Flea Market with a lot of second-hand products (in stores), but there are also a lot of shops selling first-hand stuff as well as a good number of restaurants (mostly fast-food counters). It's fun to roam the area, checking out the clothes, accessories, gadgets, and more. But you either need a lot of time finding some good quality stuff or you just need to be lucky. Many many shops have the same kind of products, for similar prices. Ok, the cheap souvenirs are a bit cheaper here. But it's more of an area I'd stroll around and do window shopping rather than actually buy something. And the food is just your regular (greek) fast-food fare. Head elsewhere for good meals. Nonetheless, we'll come back next time when in Athens. Because it's fun just for what it is.

This is a really fun, colorful and busy area. Lots of shopping options. It's actually a Flea Market with a lot of second-hand products (in stores), but there are also a lot of shops selling first-hand stuff as well as a good number of restaurants (mostly fast-food counters).
