OttoRink Weinbar has been holding down the scene on Dresdener Straße a while longer than the others on this list. The wine selection here is stellar, the ambience sophisticated and the service friendly. One might forget that Kotti is a mere pop of the cork away. For white wines, Otto sticks exclusively to Germany — and indeed, why not? — whereas the reds receive flank support from French, Spanish and South American grapes.

This last one, besides describing one famously turbulent literary genius, is a specialty at Kreuzberg’s Limonadier — a daring bar with a profusion of original drinks worth checking out. That being said, we’d be damned if we told you to order anything other than the Dostojewski (Dostoyevsky), a daring mix of blood-red berries, spicy pepper and tequila. Not unlike Russian literature, this drink is bold, sweeping and deeply nuanced.

The Clover Club consists of gin, lemon juice, raspberry syrup and a bit of egg white. This deviant little drink has some exciting textures, but it’s easily botched if your bartender isn’t paying attention. For the very best Berlin version, look no further than Victoria Bar, a high-caliber cocktail locale that any gin aficionado is sure to appreciate. And remember: shaken, not stirred.

The creamy, just-a-little-sweet cocktail worthy of the finest SoCal slacker can be tricky. The pros know to let the drink reach you in layers of cream, Kahlúa and vodka with some clinking cubes. It's made with precision at An Einem Sonntag Im August, a bar where the drinks are as good as the disco ball is big. The Dude abides.

The Bloody Mary is beloved all over the globe, but that hasn’t stopped Berliners from adopting it as our very own. Ideally, you want it just spicy enough, with vodka that has been generously but not viciously poured (though we’ve all tasted exceptions). Few are better at reaching that blissful balance than the mixers at Studio8 in Wedding. In this underground enclave there are plenty of other libations worth trying once you've had your daily dose of veggies.

A good whiskey sour slides down your throat with a satisfying balance of brown liquor burn and citrusy tartness. For this Hemingway hallmark, one of your best bets is Queso y Jamon, a top spot in Prenzlauer Berg for tapas. The drinks list is filled with boozy gems, but none sparkle quite like the whiskey sour.

The Moscow Mule is proof that happiness comes in a copper mug. This simple drink of vodka, ginger beer, lime and ice has been enjoyed by Berliners of all stripes, from capitalists to communists. The retro style at Zu Mir Oder Zu Dir is a testament to this tradition. Here, expect a well-mixed version of the cocktail in an eclectic atmosphere.

In Berlin there may not be any cafes more beautiful than this one. A stunning yet faithful renovation of the former Apotheke makes it an absolute winner when you want to while away an afternoon with a book or a friend. Come nightfall, the staff is known to whip up some serious cocktails. And don't forget the house-made seasonal lunches and dinners, complete with bread baked fresh on-site.

As the name suggests, ceviche is this restaurant's one, its all, its everything. And it's done right. Buttery fresh fish, citrusy tangs and chili kicks all dance together at Cevicheria — probably the best place in the city to taste the Peruvian delicacy. Brace yourself for an onslaught of flavor.

This little Korean eatery knows how to keep things simple. Here you have a tough choice between bibimbap and more bibimbap. But whether it’s with sea asparagus, beef, chicken, tofu or pork belly, it's going to be tasty as hell. What’s more, the house- made teas and herbal Moscow mules are to die for.

Hat tips to Companion and Concierge for raising the coffee game in the district, but the newer third-wave arrival, Nano, may well make the meanest brew. A rotating array of German roasteries is featured in this cafe's mighty espresso-based drinks and V60 pour-overs. The interior, handcrafted by the owner himself, is as simple and focused as the coffee.

With a classy ambience and some colossal hookahs, Café Zera knows how to take the best of Turkish tradition and combine it with the right amount of modern style. If you want a hot cup of tea or some fresh espresso, you can’t go wrong here (as long as you show up after 1 p.m.). The same goes for if you just need a comfy spot to practice blowing smoke rings. Make reservations, especially if you have a group.

Unlike our at buddies Max und Moritz, Parker Bowles gladly breaks with tradition, but in the best way possible. Chef Sebastian Pfister heads a kitchen that cooks locally sourced delights for meat lovers, pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans alike. The beer selection is also an impressive one, with both Bavarian favorites and inspired IPAs.

As anyone to ever sink their teeth into an authentic chunk of smokehouse Texas barbecue can tell you, magic happens whenever Texans take over grill. That magic, once reserved for backyard cookouts in cowboy country, is now part of our local landscape. Texan Adam Ramirez is the mastermind behind The Pit, a brand-new beef BBQ joint that even pork-loving Germans can't get enough of. Armed with a custom-built Texas smoker and a drive to bring real brisket to Berlin, Ramirez hand-smokes his beef for 18 hours before bringing out house-made sauce, succulent ribs and tangy coleslaw. Pair that with beers from Stone Brewing and you're one step closer to earning your spurs.
