Wild cliffs and a Stevenson lighthouse; walks that epitomise Shetland. Stop and listen to the Atlantic swell booming in, even on the stillest of days.

The second best preserved broch in Shetland; a site of 4,000 years of continuous habitation, until the Clearances ended it in 1874; a very peaceful headland looking out onto the sea between Yell, Fetlar and unst; and a fair chance of seeing otters.

You are truly in the wilds of Yell when you reach Gossa Water. I may try to describe the beauty of it someday; if you go you could try also. You could carry on walking south, to the lochs of Lumbister, a very isolated (abandoned) croft; then the steep-sided Daal takes you to a gyo (a cliff-sided inlet) where you will meet many seals who will be most surprised to see you too.

What I am actually talking about here is the walk to Fetheland, the north tip of the Shetland mainland. What a walk - we´re still talking about it. See the cliffs, the Ramna Stacks, the west coast of Yell and the Atlantic horizon.

Another good beach, some standing stones, a sheltered inlet behind the impressive cliffs of the Blue Mull (the ones you can see from Lingarth). A churchyard that contains a ´Trowie Knowe´. (A pre-christan religious site, said to be the home of Trows, or the Shetland version of the little people.) The devil´s cloven footprint, and a grave on which the grass is said to never grow. Move on before twilight.
