The Serra da Estrela Natural Park is the largest protected area in Portugal, located in the central mountainous massif, in a high plateau that inclines towards the North-East, cut across by rivers and streams that have their source here such as the Mondego and Zêzere. The landscape is marked by rocky outcrops, boulders and crags, several of which resemble human forms that have given rise to popular names such as "head of the old woman " and the "Pitchers" (fat, thin and flat), that may be admired as visitors hike along the many existing pedestrian trails.

It’s a geological monument with an extreme beauty, being one of the ex-libris of Manteigas and Serra da Estrela.
Due to the higher schistose peaks, formed by corneal rocks (phenomenon that occurs when the plastic and hot magma rises through pre-existents rocks), predominate steeps landscapes, where water lines emerge like the Poço do Inferno (Inferno Well) cascade. This natural waterfall is about 10 meters high and sometimes turns into ice during the more stringent winter.

Sortelha is one of the oldest, most beautiful towns in Portugal. It has kept its physiognomy all this time and is considered one of the best preserved. A visit to its streets and alleys, enclosed in a defensive ring and watched over by a lofty 13th century castle takes outsiders back to past centuries among medieval tombs, by the Manueline pillory or in front of the renaissance church.
