Traditional sesame oil making and food pairings in Seoul

Peek behind the scenes of a 40-year-old sesame oil mill, where you’ll get the chance to roast seeds yourself before enjoying the fragrant oils with Korean style small food. • After touring the mill and sipping tea, we’ll dive into the manufacturing process of sesame or perilla oils. You’ll even get a chance to wash and roast sesame (or perilla) seeds on your own. • In your first tasting, you’ll sample types of seeds paired with Korean ingredients. • As we shift to demonstrating the milking process, you’ll also get a chance to practice this step yourself. • We’ll then taste both sesame and perilla oils, including pairing them with more delicious food. We’ll end with another hands-on demo: Learning how to transfer the oil into glass bottles without spilling a drop. You’ll even get to take home a souvenir.

Carve a stone seal with a craft woman in Insadong Seoul

Hello I'm Jeongju Kim. Welcome to my seal carving workshop, where you'll discover the art of creating your own personalized stone seal. This workshop offers more than just beautiful craftsmanship—it's an opportunity to experience the meditative joy of traditional Korean seal carving. As you work with your hands, you'll find yourself relaxing into the slow, mindful rhythm of this ancient art form. I'll guide you through the entire process of creating your own seal, beginning with two distinct carving techniques. You'll learn how to handle the engraving tools properly as we practice making straight lines, circles, and other essential patterns. Then, I'll help you design your name in a style that perfectly suits its syllables and meaning. Once you've completed your design, I'll teach you how to carefully carve it into your stone. After the carving is finished, you'll experience the satisfaction of applying traditional Korean ink and making your first stamp. At last your elegant seal case will help to protect and display your seal. This creative process often helps people rediscover the deeper meaning of their names—something we sometimes forget in our busy lives. As a special touch, I'll write a calligraphy message of your choice on a card for you to take home. Your handcrafted seal will serve as a lasting reminder of your time in Seoul, far more meaningful than any thing.
