“Walk the lovely park of the botanical gardens in the fresh air of the Highveld. Chat to the locals walking their dogs and grab a cold drink at the basic coffee shop. ”

“-Melville Koppies Guided Tour - +27 11 482 4797. Melville Koppies, Melville (Parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park Sports Club, Judith Rd, Emmarentia). Every Sunday (alternating between 08:30 and 15:00 departures every other week). Melville Koppies is a Nature Reserve and a Johannesburg City Heritage Site. Its geology goes back three billion years. Stone tools show that Early Stone Age man camped here as long as 500 000 years ago. There is a Late Stone Age living floor. Within the last 1 000 years Iron Age immigrants arrived, and remains of their kraal walls can be found on the northern slopes. In 1963 an iron-smelting furnace was excavated and can be seen today. ”

Indian Restaurant
$$
“Doppio Zero is a Mediterranean restaurant (not an Indian restaurant - not sure why the Airbnb location map has named it as an Indian place!!). Their food has been prepared to a high standard since day 1, everything is fresh and consistently good. It is literally 5 minutes drive from our Airbnb and is a place I’ve been frequenting since they started started out as a bakery and al fresco cafe in March 2002. Made popular by its freshly made artisan ciabatta, exclusive bakery and meeting place, the aroma of baking kept people coming and they knew they had something special. Over time this evolved into a full service restaurant with a wide range of Mediterranean specialties and traditional Italian fare. It has a menu for everyone, whether you are a vegan or a meat eater. Salads, seafood, pizza, pasta, and even mezze or tapas dishes. With the success of the Greenside restaurant, Doppio Zero began a quick expansion. Doppio Zero currently has restaurants in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Alexandria in Egypt. One of my “home from home” places.”

“This one is a must for the vegans, vegetarians, and health aficionados. A niche health store and cafe, with a variety of baked goods (low carb/gluten free etc) and a wholesome menu. Their coffee and breakfasts are particularly nice.”

“Craft Beer and Boutique Burgers of note!! In the growing list of Burger-Beer joints, this one is up there with the best and one of the few that have (thankfully) avoided being franchised. Their impressive selection of burgers come in all variants including vegetarian and vegan options. The Tofu or Quinoa-Lentil patties are so good, you'll wonder why burgers aren't always made this way...”
