“At the heart of Balimore's toniest urban neighborhood is America's first Washington Monument. Climb the 227 steps for great views of the city, and when you're done enjoy the cruciform park that stretches out from the monument's base. Each wing has its own fountain and cultivated grounds -- a great place to spend an afternoon reading outside.”

“The George Peabody Library, formerly known as the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, is the 19th-century focused research library of The Johns Hopkins University. It is located on the Peabody campus at West Mount Vernon Place in the Mount Vernon-Belvedere historic cultural neighborhood north of downtown Baltimore, Maryland, across from the landmark Washington Monument. The collections are available for use by the general public, in keeping with the famous Baltimorean merchant/banker/financier/philanthropist George Peabody's goal to create a library "for the free use of all persons who desire to consult it"”

“Its establishment began on January 21, 1882 when long-time local hardware merchant, banking and steamship company executive and philanthropist Enoch Pratt, (1808-1896), offered a gift of a central library, four branch libraries , and a financial endowment of US $1,058,333 in a significant piece of correspondence to Mayor William Pinkney Whyte and the City Council of Baltimore. His intention was to establish a public circulating library that (as he described it): "shall be for all, rich and poor without distinction of race or color, who, when properly accredited, can take out the books if they will handle them care”
