The space

Escape from the ordinary! Take the spectacular drive to the Petrolia Guest House on the remote 'Lost Coast' of Humboldt County, California. Formally known as ‘The Lost Inn, we are located in the hamlet of Petrolia, just a short walk to the general store and three blocks to the one and only restaurant/bar in our remote valley.

We offer a spacious three room suite in the front part of our home, with its own private entrance. It has its own garden with a lovely pastoral view. There is a large bedroom, sun room/bedroom and a glassed in kitchenette porch that overlooks the garden. The bedroom includes a large velvet couch as well as a miniature antique piano.

We are one mile from the pristine Mattole River that wends its way through our valley. It affords visitors lovely swimming holes through the summer and fall, and canoeing, river rafting and catch and release fishing through the winter months.
We are just 6 miles from the Lost Coast beach which offers tide pools and beach combing. Watching whales and sunsets are a popular pastime.

The Lost Coast Beach happens to be the northern end of the Kings Range National Conservation Area and the trailhead of the popular 25 mile Lost Coast hiking trail. This trail is one of the few coastal wilderness hiking experiences in the United States.

It is just a short walk to our Mattole Valley Community Center across the street from the elementary school. It offers several weekly classes in yoga and chi gong. Guests could also make an appointment with several very accomplished massage therapists, physical therapists and acupuncturists.
There is also a Sunday farmers market there.

We are pet-friendly, and will allow your pet to stay on the glassed-in porch next to the bedroom. However, we require a $10.00 fee per night for your pet to stay here. We also have two child-friendly cats and one small dog. We are also wheelchair accessible and have wi-fi available.

Some of our guests visit us touring on bikes or motorcycles since we are located on a scenic road loop, about 75 miles long (Rte. 211), between the Victorian village of Ferndale and Humboldt Redwoods State Park just off Hwy 101.

Please note that we now have an ATM machine in the Petrolia
general store.

There is an extra cleaning fee of $40.00 required for 5+ night stay.

This is a magical place to stay. We highly recommended it if you are interested in getting way away from the rat race. The accommodations are very unique. We stayed for for two nights and I was still being amazed by decorative items that Gail has around the unit that I hadn't noticed before. The shower is awesome. Nice and hot and lots of pressure. The kitchen is very well equipped. The running water has a little sulfur smell but we found it very tolerable plus there is wonderful spring water to drink and cook with. If you are doing the Mattole Road drive between Ferndale and Humbolt Redwoods State Park (which is what we did) this is a perfect place to break up a drive that should be taken slowly for maximum enjoyment. Once here you are only a short drive from the month of the Mattole River where you will find awesome beach hikes and sunsets and camping if you want. If you have a high clearance vehicle and ideally 4x4 a drive up Prospect Ridge Ridge Roads provides awesome views of the coast. In short there are lots of outdoor opportunities here.

I stayed here with my husband and children (age 10 and 7). We really enjoyed our stay in this house. It's a beatiful and quite place. The garden has a nice view of the mountains. Gail was always so welcoming and helpful. The kids loved to play with the little dog and cat living in the house. The house is situated close to a general store where we bought our food. We would love to come back here.

If you are looking for an out-of-the-way, quiet, peaceful place in delightful surroundings, this is the place for you. The accommodations are basic, but adequate and clean and all you need for a few days stay is provided. We loved the private garden which overlooked a field where we spotted wild turkeys.

Phil & Gail are lovely, warm, welcoming hosts. This was a return visit for us. Their accommodations are artistic & eclectic, fully aligned with the unique and wonderful character of Petrolia. Sitting in the sun in their yard by the garden full of fragrant roses, poppies, limes, and other varieties of flowers which I can't name, while watching cows wander by in an adjacent field and feeling cooled by ocean winds is paradise! Gail & Phil made sure we had what we needed and we couldn't have felt more relaxed and comfortable during our stay!

A lovely place! We had a fantastic time relaxing in the garden in the sunshine and listening to the frogs in the evening. The place was adorable and eccentrically decorated, we kept seeing new things every moment that were interesting! It was a great location for us, not too far away from the Humbolt Redwoods and the Lost Coast which was absolutely beautiful. We loved Petrolia's small-town vibe. Will definitely be visiting again.

We were originally from the east coast but migrated to the San Francisco bay area in our youth. When we were having our first child we migrated to Petrolia, Ca where we settled and raised our family of 3 children and 1 dog, 2 cats and 28 chickens.
Gail was a school teacher and Phil did everything from carpentry, plumbing, electrical and small engine repair. .
Now we 'imagine' ourselves to be semi-retired operating this one vacation rental and spending time with our only grandchild Vasilisa.
Gail enjoys taking walks, knitting, playing scrabble on line, and raising organic vegetables. Phil sometimes enjoys maintaining everything. He's a pack rat. Ask him to show you his workshop. He also enjoys a good conversation about our collapsing civilization!
