Description

The space

A modern mountain log house, in the beautiful lap of the high Himalayan snow peaks, in the daylong company of birdsong and rural pastoral life.
A quiet, rustic, restful retreat for repose, bonding, and an authentic rural Himalayan experience. Smartly done up with a modern eclectic touch, the cottage has 3 airy bedrooms, bright with natural light and adorned with handmade art, variety of books, very cosy, comfortable furnishings and furniture. One of the bedrooms is en-suite on the top floor, with its own little sit out and the other two rooms on the ground-floor share a common bathroom. The open plan kitchen is also on the ground floor.
There is a large lounge cum dining tent adjacent to the cottage.
The entire cottage can be hired for group or a family of 6 to 8 persons, or in units of each room. Extra persons can be accommodated in the lounge room if needed on extra charge.
We do not always stay on site, but visit on and off. There is a full time caretaker available on site for cooking, cleaning and other small errands. Local guides are also available on prior request for treks, camping and so on.
Located in a pristine, quaint, remote mountain region bang in the heart of the mighty Himalaya, in a village of 56 families. Surrounding forests are a mix of ancient oaks, rhododendrons, deodars, pine and various native Himalayan species. Wildlife sightings can include leopards, Himalayan dear, jungle cats, pine martens, and wide range of birds.
Our cottage is on a forest road high up at 7000 ft, a few steps downhill from the parking , en route from Pokhri - Nagnath to Mohankhal forest range in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Roughly 400kms distant from New Delhi, and 220kms from Haridwar, the driving is on the Haridwar-Joshimath National Highway 58, and besides the Ganga river through mountains all the way. We are on a ridge dividing the two river valleys of Mandakini and Alaknanda, the two sister streams of the Ganga as it goes rushing down from its source to the plains.
We are blessed with amazing snow views of eternal Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhambha from all the huge glass windows and sit outs. Wonderful forest and village walks, treks and bird watching opportunities abound. An excellent base for the Chopta-Tunganath - Deoarital trek in the Kedarnath Musk deer Sanctuary area, skiing at Auli and and pilgrimage to the Char Dham and Hemkunt Sahib. We are also close to the UNESCO World heritage site of Valley of Flowers, and the renowned Alpine meadows of Bedni and Ali Bugyal.
There are activities that can be planned in advance, for those who are keen- local cooking, farming practices participation, knitting sessions with village women, local craft centre visits and shopping, mountain biking and overnight camping among others.
A visit to Birdsong Cottage is an opportunity to live amongst villagers and observe and participate in their lifestyle, culture and festivals-a mix of modern professions and traditional organic terrace farming and forest produce based livelihoods. To savor local organic food for most meals. To live amidst pure clean air, to sip pure sweet spring water and to admire the glorious bounty and magic of mother earth.
Ideal for nature lovers, artists, photographers, mountain lovers and and birdwatchers. Great for family bonding and activities with kids.
Local town with bus station, taxi stand, basic health facilities, internet and market is 1.5 kms away.
What makes us stand apart is that we are the only quality guest accommodation with a repository of rich experiences and stories to share, in this pristine and utterly incredibly beautiful region for the leisure seeking visitor, who is travelling for a deep connect with nature and culture outside, and with their own inner essence as well.

Guest access

The cottage and the adjoining lounge tent is open to guests. There is system of boundary walls in the village so basically it is one merged neighborhood.

Interaction with guests

Sometimes we may be at the cottage and other times not. When we are there we interact a lot with our guests, sharing meal times and other activities and its up to the guests to decide how much interaction they like.

The neighborhood

We are located in a small, remote village that still lives off small scale organic farming and animal herding in great measure. And we are surrounded by old indigenous forests. the great himalayan peaks face the cottage and the views are stunning at all times, changing with seasons and time of day. There is a huge variety of birds all around and some exciting sightings of wildlife too.

Getting around

This is a place to walk , hike and trek ! So get those legs all the exercise they can take. Local transport is available but not the most comfortable. It is best to get a hired car along or drive in.

Other things to note

The pricing listed on airbnb is for one person per night, without meals. For food we ask guests to pay cash, as per bills for the ingredients to be bought fresh. Guests are recommended to take the advice of the caretaker and plan the meals sufficiently in advance.

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets
No parties or events
Check in time is flexible

Welcome to our holiday home! We hope you have a beautiful time here at Birdsong, and to further enhance our mutual happiness lets share some house rules. Please always wipe your shoes before entering the cottage. Keep all umbrellas/ raincoats outside the main door. Wipe dry all bathroom floors and surfaces after use. Tap water is scarce in these mountains so please be prudent in use of showers and taps. Keep the fly screen windows closed at all times and keep the doors shut to keep flies out. Do keep the main verandah lights switched on all through the night as this is a forest area and we can do without wild animals resting on the porch all night! Let the caretaker know your meal requirement the previous night so he can plan to get fresh raw materials and so on. Also let him know any local daily needs shopping and day's plans if going out for long. House cleaning and room cleaning happens daily so please co-ordinate the time as per your convenience. Have a wonderful stay !

My parents traveled there - A beautifully made abode with a very picturesque view. Comfortable stay. Equipped kitchen with caretaker to help. Evenings are cold and breezy so carry warm clothes as there is no heater as of now, but have requested Kiran to house one. Be clear in accounting with the caretaker in case you are giving advances for any grocery or other purchases which we missed. Its a wonder place to stay and rejuvenate. As for hiking routes and Karan the caretaker will show you around.

The Birdsong Cottage is an amazing place to stay and enjoy of the espectacular view in front of you. Pokhari is a lovely village at the top of the mountain, authentic India. You can easily get there by taking a shared taxi at Karanprayag, and then walk or take a taxi to the cottage, about one kilometre distance. The house is completely equipped. The beautiful French style window allows the light to come in, and there is a wonderful terrace to enjoy a nice book as the view. If you have any particular food needs, bring them all on with you, since the shops around provide basic items. Note that there was no wifi working at the place when we went, so you might need to put some extra megabytes to your equipments, to go prepared. Kiran was not at the place when we visited, but she was always there to help us with anything we needed, along with Karan, the care taker. Really recommend staying here.

The cottage looks very nice. But it's smaller than what it appears to be in the photos. There are two rooms, kitchen and bathroom downstairs. One room is on the second floor. There's a narrow and winding set of stairs within the cottage connecting the two floors. It is clean and looks pretty overall. The balconies are very nice. You can either watch the whole range of snow clad mountains or the local villagers doing their everyday chores. It's a very quiet and secluded place. Book only if you enjoy that kind of a stay. There's one caretaker and one help to attend to your requirements. Although when we reached there, the caretaker was not present and the help looked clueless when we asked how to get the luggage in. Mind it, it's a long way down from the main road. You have to climb up and down a set of stairs/slopes to access the cottage from main road. And we did not find any proper place to park the car safely. We visited the cottage, looked around for sometime but did not check in. My parents don't enjoy a place so secluded as this, my father is a cardiac patient and the stairs from the main road to the cottage were too steep for him, there was no place to park the car, with only one help available it seemed impossible to carry our bags to the cottage from the main road. So we left. Had I been there with a bunch of young and physically fit people I would have definitely loved to experience one night's stay at the cottage.

Response from Kiran:
Dear Rohon, i am sorry your expectations did not match the reality. Sometimes it is difficult to gauge the nature of the landscape and facilities even after plenty if community as we had exchanged. People have different ideas about physical difficulty of access as well. We do mention about the slope and steps and that the place is in a tiny village. We have neighbors literally sharing a wall so it is not seculded in the real sense, but then again all of this is so subjective. I still wish your parents had stayed, and they would bave realised the walk was not as strenuois as it looked. As for luggage, ine or two pueces at a time does get it in. The help and the caretaker speak with a little different attitude and approach than plains people and it can be sometimes misunderstood.

Kiran's place is a himalayan dream. Gorgeous views of the mountains, including snow peaks, quaint village life and serenity are the reasons one should make this an essential pit stop while exploring Uttarakhand. The house is tastefully appointed and one can sit sipping on some tea all day, looking through the beautiful French Windows at the mountains. Read, write, compose, create. This home is a must visit.
