Unique homestay in pristine, rural Garhwal Himalaya. 3 bedroom cottage overlooking grand views of the eternal snow peaks - Nanda Devi, Trishul & more.
430 kms from Delhi, 220 kms from Rishikesh, approached on NH58.
The price shown is for ONE double room per night per couple.
Meals are not included in the price. Simple home cooked vegetarian / non-vegetarian meals are offered on a set cost, paid on site to the caretaker.

The space

A mountain log house, in the lap of the Himalayan snow peaks, with the company of birdsong and rural pastoral life.
A quiet, restful retreat for repose and bonding. Done up with an eclectic touch, the cottage has 3 airy bright bedrooms adorned with handmade art, variety of books and very comfortable furnishings.
One of the bedrooms is en-suite on the top floor, with its own little sit out. Two other bedrooms on the ground-floor share a common bathroom. The open plan kitchen is also on the ground floor at present, though it will shift out soon.
The entire cottage can be hired for group or a family of 6 to 8 persons, or in units of each room.
We do not always stay on site, but visit on and off.
There is a caretaker (a village farmer, so please do not expect hotel style service, but be prepared for homely warmth and care) on site for cooking, cleaning and other small errands.
Surrounding forests are a mix of ancient oaks, rhododendrons, deodars, pine and various native Himalayan species. Wildlife sightings can include leopards, Himalayan dear, jungle cats, pine martens, monitor lizards and wide range of birds.
Our cottage is at the edge of a small village on a forest road high up at almost 7000 ft, a few steps downhill from the open roadside parking. You get here en route from Pokhri - Nagnath to Mohankhal forest range in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. We are on a ridge dividing the two river valleys of Mandakini and Alaknanda, the two sister streams of the Ganga.
An excellent base for the Chopta-Tunganath - Deoarital trek in the Kedarnath Musk deer Sanctuary area, skiing at Auli and and pilgrimage to the Char Dham and Hemkunt Sahib. We are also close to the UNESCO World heritage site of Valley of Flowers, and the renowned Alpine meadows of Bedni and Ali Bugyal.
You can savor local cooking, farming practices participation, local shopping, and overnight camping.
A visit to Birdsong Cottage is an opportunity to breathe pure clean air, to sip pure sweet spring water. An ideal sojourn for nature lovers, artists, photographers, mountain lovers and and birdwatchers. Great for family bonding and activities with kids.
Local town with bus station, taxi stand, basic health facilities, and market is 1.5 kms away.

Guest access

Sometimes we may be at the cottage and other times not. When we are there we interact a lot with our guests, sharing meal times and other activities and its up to the guests to decide how much interaction they like.

Other things to note

The pricing listed on Airbnb is for one room per couple per night, without meals. For food we ask guests to pay cash for the set meal prices. Guests are recommended to take the advice of the caretaker and plan the meals sufficiently in advance.

Kiranjeet's house is very beautiful, the pictures here are not doing any justice. The view from each room, balcony and the kitchen was truly amazing. I loved cooking with the view! All the necessities are taken care of. Care taker was very helpful. A must visit for all the nature lovers and ones who dream of having a cabin in the woods.

Akanksha this is the most touching and surprising review :) I wish you would share your pictures then, and I will be happy to upload them, to do justice to the beauty you felt we have not showcased. One also is a little wary of perhaps underplaying things, so as to not set up expectations too high. Your feedback has really made me think! Thanks so much for seeing Birdsong with so much love. That is our biggest reward of hosting.

It's a beautiful home away from home. There are so many things to read, thanks to Kiranjeet. The abode is done very tastefully. Though the bugs bug you sometimes.. but maybe thats because of the rainy season that we went in. The caretaker was nice.. took care of our meals pretty much. All in all it was a village experience never done before with beautifuls views to see as you wake up. Thanks again for letting us stay!

My family (My mother, our teenage daughter, my husband, and I) stayed at the Birdsong cottage for a month this May. We wanted a place where we could relax, spend time with nature, read, and have quality family time. This was the perfect place to do that. Kiran was prompt and helpful from the start- she shared useful phone numbers, gave tips about walks and treks, and kept in touch during our stay. The caretakers- Karan and Jagat- were very nice, ready to help with daily chores and small glitches. The best aspects of the Birdsong is the natural rural setting (it is not a touristy hill station), with a great mountain and valley view from the balcony, the friendly and caring neighbors, and proximity to places such as the Nagnath forest, Kartik Swami temple, Chopta and Tungnath etc- all offering good trekking opportunities. Our best times were spent watching the endless drama of the mountains and clouds from the balcony, listening to the sounds of birds and the daily rural life, and chatting with the young women and children who stopped by to say hello. Birdsong is not a place for you if you are looking for luxury hotel kind of accommodation and service (but the cozy wooden cottage is equipped with all the basic urban facilities and groceries are easily available), cannot gracefully handle small rural glitches and the odors of cattle, farm activities etc., are not able to climb up at least 3 to 4 stories, or want constant entertainment/ urban distractions to enjoy a vacation. All in all, it was a great vacation for our family. We thank Kiran, Karan, and Jagat for all the help.

I am so glad you and your family had a good vacation Prof. Manisha. It is always a pleasure to host visitors who appreciate and care for what Birdsong offers - a home away from home minus the responsibility :) yes, it is not a luxury resort/ hotel but rather a rural retreat - with the accompaniment of cattle bells as well as cattle odor, along with all kinds of bounty of nature, with most of the comforts of an urban home. So happy you enjoyed your stay. It was lovely to keep in touch and have updates about your local adventures throughout your visit.

Beautiful little cottage in the hills with a stunning view. Words alone don't do justice to the place.
