Our charming old fashioned cottage on TALKING HORSE FARM is private and quiet, overlooking meadows where our horses graze and bird life abounds! Full kitchen with dining table and day bed. Living room with surround windows, wifi, TV for DVD's. Flowers and herbs surround the private, sunny patio. Love Horses? Take some Horse Lessons with our mustangs. Great walks right from the door and a mile to the Deer Harbor dock & beach for kayaking, whale watching, sailing. SORRY NO PETS.

The space

Our guests say: "This is paradise!" when they stay at The Rose Cottage on TALKING HORSE FARM. Located in sunny Deer Harbor in a very private valley on a dead end road, you can watch our mustangs play in the meadows below, or the deer snacking on my flowers. This Island gem was built my husband and has an old fashioned feeling with wood floors, high bead board ceilings, lots of sunshine and walls of windows. We have high speed internet for those who are working or need to stay in touch.
This one bedroom cottage offers a queen sized bed with down comforters and cotton linens. There is also a single bed (sleigh bed) in the dining room. The fully equipped kitchen has a double sink, gas range, fridge, table for dining. Windows surround the living room offering views in three directions and let in lots of sunshine. Furnished with couch, chairs and TV with a DVD player. (Bring your own DVD's) The bathroom is compact with shower, sink and washer/dryer, and we have a brand new bathroom fan.
Adjacent to a Waterfowl Sanctuary for extraordinary bird watching, you may see owls, hawks, eagles, songbirds, migrating waterbirds, finches, swallows, herons right from the patio. The round brick patio surrounded by mature lavender and flowering herbs is a great place for a glass of wine, while watching the sunset.
If you love horses, you can take lessons with our mustangs. Some people visit for a week or more and study horsemanship, liberty work, riding at our farm. New to horses? We offer a two hour introductory session on how to understand and connect with horses at liberty, (no halter or rope). For the more advanced student we offer lessons in dressage and 'Work in Hand'.
Walk to the nearby Deer Harbor Marina to the beach, or to go whale watching or kayaking at the Deer Harbor dock. Quiet roads for walking right out the door, and great hiking on nearby Turtleback Preserve.
Eastsound offers a variety of eateries, some of our favorites are the Asian Kitchen for lunch, Ship Bay Oyster House for dinner - both offer excellent seafood. At the far end of Orcas you can find the Doe Bay Cafe- run by a 5 star chef from NYC, or grab some crabcakes and blackberry pie at the Olga Cafe. For more about Orcas visit my blog: LifeOnOrcasIsland.

A recent guest had this to say: ". I would HIGHLY suggest you take some horse lessons during your stay, it will feed your soul, and Kate is a master at her craft in her ability to connect with the horses." See more at: Natural Horsemanship On Orcas. I offer private lessons for horse handling skills and riding for those who have shown success working with the horses on the ground. Learn to play games with horses who are free ( at liberty) learning the language of the horse, games to capture attention and how to connect with love and friendship and not force. See: Natural Horsemanship on Orcas. ( Age 9 and up )

Guest access

The entire cottage with patio/garden/lawn area. Walking trails nearby, the chairs down by the bird preserve. We are happy to have you come and meet the horses and rabbits. Look for us when we are outside.. (which is a great deal of our day!)
For Horse Lessons at the farm with the Mustangs-
Learn how to be safe with a horse, creating good boundaries and clear communication. Learn to read and understand what the horse is telling you, and how to use your energy and body language to communicate effectively and gently. All the basics - having your horse catch you, haltering, grooming, leading, lunging, keys to relaxation and ways to establish gentle, yet effective leadership. You can read more about what I teach on my site. Natural Horsemanship on Orcas.
Take a 2 hour introductory session, or spend days expanding your learning with the mustangs. It's fun, engaging and like a moving meditation!
For more advanced riders, I offer the basic movements for classical dressage, this work is done on line, or in hand, like the Old Masters educated their horses. Learn how to develop better movement, relaxation, getting the horse to stretch and lower his neck, step under the middle of his body, and from there, learn Shoulder In, Haunches In, Piorette. Lunge line lessons also available.

Interaction with guests

We live on the same property. Guests can check in at 4 pm, if it's before 8 pm, we generally go up and say hello. If later, we will see you in the morning. We are here to help you have a good visit, but we also really respect your privacy! If you see us outside we are happy to visit. If you need something, come down and let us know, or send an email!

Other things to note

Washington State now has a Ferry reservation system. Be sure to book a ticket in advance! Please note: GPS does not work well on Orcas and cell phones are spotty.

Please stay out of fenced pastures when horses are in them - for safety sake, and because the fences are electric. My older horses are all shades of brown, and they are friendly and confident. They are happy to meet you over the fence. I have a new (dun) honey colored mare who is just out of the wild and she has a new foal.
No smoking in or around the house.
Garbage cans are in the fenced area by the parking.
Feel welcome to use the washer/dryer.

This was my third stay at Kate's in 15 months, which I think says a lot about how much I like her, her place, her horses, and Orcas Island. The Cottage is cosy and quiet, perfect for catching up on sleep. I like cooking in it with fresh produce from the farmers' market and farm stands. I can't wait to visit again.

Adorable place with horses. May be because the house is located on a farm, but did notice a mouse or two scurrying across the kitchen/dining area during our one night stay.

Kate's cabin is very charming! There are tons of windows and though it is small it was very comfortable for 3 adults. The property is lovely and we would love to come back. Orcas is such an amazing place!!

We thoroughly loved our time at the Rose Cottage. It’s filled with character and offers everything you could possibly want during your stay. The opportunity to enjoy our morning coffee / afternoon wine outside watching the antics of four charming horses was an added bonus. Thanks for everything!

The Rose Cottage was charming and cozy. We loved Kate's watercolors on the walls of the cottage. The beds were very comfy, the sitting area flooded with light, and the horses were amusing to watch. We picked enough blackberries to bake a pie which became our dinner one night, yum!! Kate and Ken were very hospitable and responsive when we needed the pilot light lit in the primary heat source. We were there as warm summer was beginning to change to cool fall. My mother, sister and I would recommend a stay in the Rose Cottage. It is a wonderful place to call home while exploring Orcas Island.

Rose Cottage is utterly charming and comfortable, and Kate is a great host. She was very responsive to questions and made the process really easy. The cottage is relaxing, the bed is comfy and the wifi is strong! Small but totally adequate kitchen. Kate's horses are what make this a unique place to stay -- whether you just want to watch them in the pasture, and hear their nickers, or take a lesson with Kate. Each horse has its have own sweet personality and they are a treat to be around.

Unique and lovely setting away from the bustle of the towns. Privacy is optimum and horses are beautiful to see in their graceful movements and soft nickering. Perfect cottage for 2.
