Casa Paladini is a gorgeous stone cottage set in an ancient chestnut grove in the mountains above Castiglione di Garfagnana. Set back in time and well away from the nearest road, you will feel secluded but not isolated in this haven of peace. The cottage sleeps 2 (max 3) and can be rented on its own or in conjunction with our new yurt tent just 50 metres away which sleeps up to four people - have a look at Wild Camping Paladini on airbnb for description of yurt.

The space

Original features such as chestnut beams and floorboards, chestnut furniture, windows and doors and stone-faced exterior and interior make Casa Paladini special. The stove, open fire and traditional pizza oven are an added attraction with fire-wood supplied free of charge.

Guest access

Casa Paladini is set in a clearing in the woods and you are free to wander around the ancient chestnut trees and fruit trees. Guests are welcome to use the vegetable garden with seasonal produce all throughout the year - if you are there The house is on the ancient road that connected Castiglione with the high mountain villages and pastures above, and there is a stunning walk to Castiglione along this trail, passing a medieval arched bridge and small waterfall before reaching the town.

Interaction with guests

Note that there is a 300 metre walk from the nearest parking space and Colm and/or his friends from the helps community of volunteers will be at hand to help you with your luggage on arrival. We often cook improvised meals around a camp fire in the woods and extend an invitation to anyone staying in the cottage. If you'r coming here for a quiet time that's fine too we won't take offense!!!

Other things to note

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Casa Paladini, with chestnut, wine and porcini mushroom festivals on every weekend in the surrounding villages. In January and Feruary the ski resorts are just a 30.minute drive away, and the springtime brings luscious growth and heat back to the Garfagnana.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the cottage for 3 nights but we wanted to stay a lot longer! The cottage is very cosy and bigger than we expected and the surroundings are magnificent. We did the two walks that Colm recommented and they were beautiful. Colm was very helpful and gave us advice about whatever we had questions about. So thank you Colm and good luck!

I absolutely loved this place. I was made to feel so at home and I can't wait to go back in the future. Colm made me feel completely at ease and there is such a great vibe about the area. A truly great host and the villa is so rustic and authentic. I made pizza every day I was there in the oven outside. Truly amazing

Colm was very helpful, we had bad weather and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it in Autumn, winter as very cold and damp. But I imagine glorious in the summer!

Casa Paladina is like owning your own bit of paradise for a couple of days. The Garfagnana valley is such an amazing area surrounded by both the Apuan Alps and the Appenines, the scenery is different around every bend. The house is tranquil if you want it to, when youre alone it is brilliant and very quiet, if Colm is around there is a gentle humming of people and harmonious activity around. Colm tends to his property with devotion, he cares for the grounds as he cares for your well being. When here make sure to see the Bagni di Lucca and the hilltop city of Lucchio with spectacular views, and canyon through the river(beds) of Orrido di Botri! The walk to Castiglione from the cottage is not for the faint hearted but well worth it! We will recommend this place to everyone who loves the outdoors and a nice getaway. Mark & Irene

This is a wonderful secret hideaway where you can completely relax. The roads are very windy to get there but it is all worth it when you arrive. It's very quiet and peaceful.

The house is just gorgeous - even more than the pictures - and the area is lovely. Our trip was 3.5 weeks, and the few days we stayed here were easily the best and most beautiful. We'll be coming back I hope. Some things: it took us a little time to adjust to altitude. And a big car can struggle a bit on the smaller roads. But really: so fab.

Colm's place was an absolute joy for a stay! His home and location is the real Toscanian experience. I felt so safe and wrapped up in the beauty and comfort of the home & locale. An absolutely wondrous experience for me!
