Vineyard view

Soak up the view during your stay.
Some info has been automatically translated.
Roquessels is a small place near Montpellier and Beziers. Located in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon, it is located on a hill on the highest point of which a castle once stood.
Below the castle chapel is the house, quietly located on the edge of the picturesque village. It offers the same unobstructed view over the plain. The house itself comprises two bedrooms, a living room with an open kitchen and a bathroom.

The space
The castle chapel already mentioned above was restored from 1990 to 1993 and can now be visited again. From there you have a nice view over a wide plain with vineyards and maquis and with a clear view you can see up to the coastal towns of Agde and Sete (the coast is about 40 km away).

The house

Within sight and 10 minutes' walk below the chapel is the house on the edge of the village. It offers the same unobstructed view over the plain. The house itself comprises two bedrooms, a living room with an open kitchen and a bathroom. It is decorated in the southern French style and equipped with everything you need for up to four people. When you come in to the front door, on the left hand side is the living room with dining table, a small desk and a cozy sofa corner. On the right is the kitchen. An electric stove with oven, fridge, sideboard and sink make it possible to try out the southern French cuisine. Via the staircase you reach the first floor. The upper rooms are beautifully bright and friendly. From one you have access to the terrace. From the ground floor, a second staircase leads to the basement to the bathroom with a bathtub and toilet. In an anteroom in front of the bathroom there is a washing machine and the gas water heater that supplies you with the flowing hot water.
In the house there is a combined air conditioning/heating system, which you need in spring and autumn, because then it can also be cool in the otherwise sunny south. If you are traveling at this time of year, think about appropriate clothing. Even in summer, you should have some warmer clothes with you, because in the coastal area of Languedoc, the Tramontana, an offshoot of the Provencal Mistral, can cause some strong winds.

Excursion destinations in the area

The area around Roquessels invites you to go on excursions. There are cultural and historical sites to visit, pretty villages to explore or simply beautiful landscapes to enjoy.

For all recommendations given here, the yellow Carte Michelin 1/200,000 (No. 83 Carcasson/Nimes). Even more accurate (and more expensive) are the blue IGN maps which indicate each climb and are more suitable for climbing.

The Faugeres Mill

20 minutes by car from Roquessels is a recently restored mill from which you have a beautiful view of the surroundings and from which you can even see the house.
A tennis court is also located here.
(Directions: Roquessels -> Faugeres -> in Faugeres signpost to "Moulin")

Gorges d'Heric

30 minutes by car from Roquessels is an impressive gorge that can be explored on foot by the untrained hiker as well as for slightly more demanding hikers with a climb up to about 1050 m.
( Directions: Roquessels -> Lamalou les Bains -> St. Pons -> Gorges d'Heric).

Gorges de la Colombière

Even before the Gorges d'Heric, you can swim here in a beautiful gorge in natural pools that stretch to the end of the gorge. But you have to climb quite a bit to the upper pools. Only the lower ones are easily accessible.
(Access: Roquessels -> Lamalou les Bains -> Gorges d'Heric)

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

One of my favorite destinations. Romantically located monastery (unfortunately also already crowded in summer) from which you can do beautiful hikes. On the way you pass the "Pont du Diable" from which you have a beautiful view of the gorge.

Grotte de Clamouse

A trip to St. Guilhem should definitely be combined with a visit to the Grotte de Clamouse. A ticket reservation via the Internet is recommended if you do not want to risk not getting a place for the tour.

Lac du Salagou

An artificial reservoir nearby, ideal in summer to cool off a bit (about 30 minutes by car)

Valras Plage

One of the nearest beaches from Roquessels (approx. 40 minutes by car) is Valras Plage, where there is a casino, a row of shops and various bars, restaurants.
(Access: Roquessels towards Beziers, follow the signs to Agde before the entrance to Beziers, from then there is a sign to Valras Plage)

When it's really crowded (in midsummer, for example)
there is a 13-kilometer-long sandy beach between Agde and Séte, which invites you to swim and where you can still get a free spot. If you prefer something more exciting, try Valras Plage.

Interesting places/cities nearby

(This is not to say that places not listed here, especially the many smaller places in the area, are not worth seeing, these can be explored on various excursions by car.)

Gabian

The nearest town, 7 km from Roquessels, is Gabian. There is a bakery, two grocery stores, a pharmacy, a post office, a magazine shop and a pub.

Roujan

In Roujan there is a large Hyper U with the cheapest gas station in the area. If you do not want to shop at one of the many markets in the area, you will find everything you need for everyday life here.

Bedarieux

The nearest town (approx. 20 minutes) with Intermarche, Bricomarche, Super U (all the supermarket chains) and gas station etc. Of course, there is also a shopping street where you can find "normal" shops. A nice local museum is also located here. Between Bedarieux and Lamalou is also the nearest golf course.

Pezenas

Called Ville de Molière, even if according to rumors he only stayed here one night. Every Saturday morning there is a market where you can find food as well as clothing and household goods.

Beziers

In summer, the "Feria de Beziers" takes place here. The French bullfight. The church and especially the church tower that you can climb offers a beautiful view over the surroundings, definitely worth seeing! Beziers is currently struggling with the highest crime rate in France. It is also called Chicago of France. This should not deter you during the day, but in the evening you should not undertake any major "exploration trips" here alone.

Montpellier

The capital of Languedoc-Roussillon. University, Opera, Musee Fabre, Peyrou Water Castle, Botanical Garden, etc. to name just a few highlights. To enumerate and describe all this in more detail would go beyond the scope (and admittedly my knowledge). The Dumont travel guide is much better suited for this.
Also recommended here are the halls where you can find the various typical foods of the region.
